    Multiple genres.

If I do the SF thing ...... So, when it comes down to it, if I am ready to do code and Settings isn't ironed out, I will simply do the genre thing.

No, please don't do a genre division (site for each genre). It opens a can of worms that is too hard to keep under control.  Arguments about what is the appropriate genre, things that are useful in every genre or cross genre, how we move wrong posts to other sites, and a host of other issues, are just the begining of the problems.

Choosing Genre divisions, we can hash out on that for ever!  Fantasy, Science Fantasy, Science Fiction is a pointless division.  Alternate History, Historical, Modern, Near Future, Future?  Western is not an actual genre, just a division book stores use. (Because you can have romances set in the west, action set in the west, mysteries set in there)  What about Action, Horror (which is fairly anti-gaming, as you are helpless against the monster), Romance, Mystery, Pulp, Fantasy, Science Fiction, arrrrgggghhhhh. My brain bleeds.

    I have one word, AMBER!

Okay, you know I have more examples (when could I ever say one word?). And what is ShadowRun (fantasy, science fiction?)?  Deadlands (Horror, Western, Fantasy)?  GamaWorld (fantasy or science fiction... I mean really now)? Supers games that are really Spy stories with a game mechanic? Spookshow!  Is Godlike is WWII game or a Supers game (WWII with minor super powers makes it...)?  Masters of the Universe kinds of heroes (Fantasy or SuperHero... don't laugh... besides the MoU game there are three other fantasy games that do this and one of them is IN PRINT.)  The divisions are artificial. People will argue them.  And useful information will be seperated... (Golden Age Champions (supers) info will be kept from Godlike info (WWII) ).  Kerren, Fantasy or Science Fiction?  Eternal Ring, Science fiction or fantasy?  CP's magic SteamPunk world?  AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!  Thud.

What about information that is applicable across genres?  Where do we put that?  Some of my supers NPCs are useful in Modern non supers games (Romantic Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, straight urban action, or 30s Pulp, or in a couple of cases, full fantasy).

My point, There is no acceptable genre division that is going to work. Believe me, I have been thinking about this a lot recently as I have been organizing my 700 some odd rules books.  Chronologic, Alphabetical, and Order in which I like them (which looks to be the winner), has become the leading ways to organize them on the shelves.

Do settings.  We can work on settings. This genre thing will create utter chaos, if not now... eventually.  Unless you really want to become Genre Police/ Snobs/ Nazis, DO SETTINGS!

    Thank you for your time.

    :)

You better help me get cracking on defining how we are going to be doing settings then.

    ;)

The genre division is actually quite simple, you have already said the anwser yourself Moon.

Rather than get into a deep and involved debate over the defining characteristics of Western and Sci-Fi as false genres, why dont we just use the basic divisions used by the book stores?

It works for the book stores.

Besides, as has been mentioned elsewhere, the submissions can be cross referenced between the genres.

...and we should keep in mind that about 99.99% of what goes on here is fiction, IE fantasy, so I think the word is really being overused.

I have recieved a PM from Siren no Orakio, that he accidentally Challenged my Mathom post in the process of voting for it. I take it that someone of you has taken care of it already, or has it vanished on his own?
  6. Re: Admin Chatter

    #166
PM'd me as well. Fixed it. :)

Just edited it and put it to "normal."
  7. Re: Admin Chatter

    Mathom took care of it
  8. Re: Admin Chatter

Is there anything useful I can do for the site? anything at all. Any long-shelved project some administrator or other didnt get around to? As long as it doesnt require anything techie. Give me a project! (Moon?)

I had an idea. What if we hold our own Oscars once a year? the Annual Strolen Awards Show, or the ASAS, can be "judged" by the admins. The 4-5 contenders  per category can be picked the same way we voted on Shards of The Storm Quest. The categories are self-explanatory...Best Location, Best NPC, Best Dungeon, Quest Winners Accolades, Best Ankle-Warmer, The-Sub-That-Brought-Me-To-Tears, Newcomer, The Lifetime Achievement Award, (The first two years statuettes are reserved for Strolen and MoonHunter) you get the idea.

    I'll order the trophies!

Also thinking of Strolen's Citadel T-Shirts on a seperate note

chilled is out doing his thing again. He is using his alter ego "gm1" this time and has once more voted highly for his own.

Yes, I know I could have deleted those, but I think you already warned him about doing that, so...  :bat:?

  12. Re: Admin Chatter

    #172
The winners of the next Quest Challenge, whenever that will commence, will receive Strolen's Citadel t-shirts. I will have them made!
  13. Re: Admin Chatter

    #173
I deleted chilled posts and made a quite obvious post that might get his attention.

    t-shirts.... :)

Let me know if you really do that, last time I talked to Kate she was buying all that crap to start her own t-shirt store and we can probably figure something out with that.
  14. Re: Admin Chatter

    #174
Actually, I really like the idea of t-shirts.  I would love to have one (preferably before mid-June, but that is a totally unrelated issue; Muro knows why!).  I totally think we should do it.  And I think there might be enough interest to make it feasible.
  15. Re: Admin Chatter

    #175
HAHA! Yes I know why Ria  :woot:

Awesome! I'll start the process. Now how about some design ideas? "Strolen's Citadel" on chest? A little logo? Colors? front/back, what?

    I guess the Oscars are a no-go.
  16. Re: Admin Chatter

    #176
I'd definitely say have it say Strolen's Citadel, and if it wouldn't be prohibitive, I'd say have our names on it.  And I am very tempted to say we should put random snippets of posts.  (Another part of me is tempted to say we should work the entirity of The Call of Captain-thulhu onto it, but we won't go there.)
  17. Re: Admin Chatter

    #177
We shall have to scour the Citadel for wit incarnate!

I like our little subtitles too.

    "Big Damn Hero"
"Last of The Bogatyrs"  -- Just looked this up and saw the legend....Good Name!!
  18. Re: Admin Chatter

    #178
Yeah, witty things aren't hard to find here.
  19. Re: Admin Chatter

    #179
    It is, truly
  20. Re: Admin Chatter

    #180
I think less is more and the shirt should match the kinda tan/sepia color of the web page, with Lord Strolen's emblem emblazoned across the chest/pocket area of the shirt with the website addy underneath it.

As for the awards...I have been thinking about that, but I would require official posting as M.C. (master of ceremonies) from his lordship Strolen.
  21. Re: Admin Chatter

    #181
    T-shirt? I want that t-shirt!

(Now if you want to put there lots of words, you may as well try a word cloud - like the one of snapshirts.com)

Recent spam attacks have reminded me of something else... maybe we are only getting popular.  :x

Hey Strolen, have you got some visitor statistics for us? I can't remember how the last ones were. It could be interesting to compare how the 2.0 is faring versus the old Citadel. A thorough Powerpoint presentation is not required, but welcome. A few Excel sheets won't hurt either.
  22. Re: Admin Chatter

    #182
I will see what I can do. Most of the stats from the last sites are gone with the move. You can see some kind of progression in the index of the forum at the bottom. The pie chart thing is a link to some stats. http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php?action=stats and you can see a little progression. Have no idea what it was on the old site though.

alexa says we are up 143% if that means anything? :dunno:

    Awards:

What do we need? I saw Scras mentioned the MC but I hesitate to do that with Ria manning the helm for the organization of the last quests votes and such and Muro putting up the t-shirts...

Whatever you want to do and whoever decides to do it, just continue the conversation and let me know what you need. I will definately be around for whatever.
  24. Re: Admin Chatter

    #184
-All I need is an exact description of how you want the t-shirts to look. We can start with the winners of the next Quest, and if that works out, t-shirts for everyone by Thanksgiving!!

-I have no issues with Scras mc'ing. I just want to be involved in the category & submission selection commitee and voting!  :woot:

    -DL is a putz

  25. Re: Admin Chatter

    #185
Scras can MC if he likes, I just figured someone should start the machinery on the Quest, and I could either pester you, or do it myself.   Anyway... shirts.  I definitely think the Citadel Logo should be on it.  I kind of like the wordcloud idea.  Definitely think it should have "Read, Post, Play" on it somewhere.  If it wasn't already a copyrighted work, I would say a larger version of Strolen's dragon avatar, but I don't guess we'll get the rights for that.
  26. Re: Admin Chatter

    #186
That avatar is a little garbled too. I got it off a tattoo site somewhere and have failed to find it in further looking. All I can find are actual tattoos.

There is the dragon that we used for the webpage award that can manipulated as well.
  27. Re: Admin Chatter

    #187
I can fix the avatar should you so desire
  28. Re: Admin Chatter

    Wouldn't complain ;) thanks.

Sheit. That is AWESOME... Too bad if all those extra visitors are spambots... :p

Scras: I withdraw my words about not attracting enough new visitors...
  32. Re: Admin Chatter

I have aligned them a little and they do look good!

*sigh* Tried to find older stats from the past, but was unable to. I faintly remember that you have shown some long ago. But anyway, the results are great!
  33. Re: Admin Chatter

What is up with the citadel nowadays? That bug Mourngrymn mentioned (erroneous DB queries galore) showed up again this morning... Has some script kiddie gained admin access and is wreaking havoc at will? Is there some fundamental weakness in SMF that is being abused?

    Inquiring minds wanna know!

I added a repair call to the nightly cron job.

I haven't seen the errors for a couple days though.

They said there was a kernel error previously, might be something hickuping?

Positive: the host is fast about looking at stuff when I ask.
Negative: I seem to be asking a lot lately.

I don't have a good answer for you. I am as frustrated, if not more so, than you. I find I have to restart the ftp services more often than I should too.

    SILLY PICTURES!
    http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2764

What do we do if more like these begin floating around?
In a sense it is spam... The pic has nothing whatsoever to do with the sub. Well, nothing special anyways.

Can we delete such pictures should they start popping up like some kind of Gremlins from Hell?
  38. Re: Admin Chatter

    #198

Personally, I don't like it, really don't like it, but I am not going to directly tell CP to remove it (hint hint nudge nudge) or, at the very least, make it a thumb size.
  39. Re: Admin Chatter

    #199
Oh, this just fucking pisses me off.  :?

I see no issue with it. Am I not allowed to have a picture of the closest aproximation to the shoes described in the post? Because said post *was*, in fact, inspired by such hi-top skate shoes, thus I see no problem in having an image which approximates the description of the shoes.

CP, let me be adult about it and put it this way.

    It is stupid.
