Have fun! Dont forget the kids anywhere! And dont forget the note pad in case vacation-related stimuli lead to any new ideas!
  2. Re: Admin Chatter

    #762
Yeah! Especially not the note pad. :)

    Have a nice holiday!

Tried to defend the Cheka instant HoH but it is true, he does it to everything and lots immediately as the first post. It is finally, after years of you all telling me, starting to annoy me.

Maybe just a 72hr hold for new submissions before they can be HoH. It will eliminate knee jerk HoHs, get some comments on there, and then, it can be HoH'd once it slips from the 'new' section and 'new comment' section to give it another life. The entire point of HoHs was to bring older stuff to the forefront. When new stuff gets it immediately then it defeats the purpose a little bit.

    I agree completely...

Perhaps HOH's should cost you XP to grant?

  5. Re: Admin Chatter

    #765
I agree with both of the above statements.
  6. Re: Admin Chatter

    Yep, makes sense

Will be away a while. Mostly due to business-related travel (and other things)

    Back by Halloween or so.

Cheka's kneejerk HoH is one of the reasons I have lobbied for a change of HoH to "Spotlighted" submissions.. submissions that A Strolenite thinks is "Something you should all look at".

This changes the emphasis of the vote and makes them more readily usable.

In the past, I have tried to talk to him about this and his voting habits (Note the change of wording on the votes? In response to him.). I have had more satisfying conversations with house cats or my old Pet Rock.

Golden are what HoH were supposed to be, but nobody votes or nominates those very often.

That's the good thing about them.

I couldn't change the HoH name to Spotlight, Moon. I just couldn't do it. My entire self fought me. I lost 18lbs trying to come to grips with leaving it spotlight but every time I saw it I cringed. Soon I was scared to use my browser and the database that has HoH hardcoded into it fed my fear like I have never experienced.

In order to save my soul I had to change it all back to HoH. Within minutes I gained 23lbs (damnit) and had such elation that I nearly floated over my chair.

    Sorry, please forgive me!
  11. Re: Admin Chatter

    Probably not.

We really need to find a different wording then. It implies all the wrong things.  And since Cheka (and others) just apply it to anything.. randomly.. usually new... not always good... does it serve its purpose.

In writing, there is a maxim: Be prepared to kill your darlings.

You can not be emotionally attached to these things. If they don't serve their purpose, we shouldn't be using them.

If we were still emotionally attached, you would be programming in Basic 12.0, rather than the cool languages you are using. (Though to be honest, basic was sooo darn easy to use, it just didn't do as much)

Put your darling aside, on a shelf somewhere. Dust it off occasionally. And do what needs to be done. Version 3.0, when it is fully implimented will kill or mutate a lot of little darlings. You are good for that, so why not your own little darlings?

As long as we get that 72 hours after submitting hack, it should be good.

Moonhunter: There is another mantra that some people use: "Deal with it."

I think it your implied definition of it that it is getting in the way. I personally like my definition which is more forgiving. I thought you had me swayed but I don't think it ever took. If anything, spotlight will create even more hits on things because it doesn't sound so holy. If all it is is a spotlight then it just means shove it into the spotlight (frontpage) for a day and the word holds no importance. Except for Cheka, the HoH is used rather well I think. If we turn it into spotlight or genericize it then it would even be more often abused.

I could put a message box pop up on each hoh vote so it asks, "Are you sure you want to nominate this?" type thing to give a person pause and enhance its importance? It needs a name with some weight to it. Golden will remain golden though, HoH will just dissappear or be used as the top 10 in each category or something. Whatever we replace it with has to be worth it.

    Spotlight - no
    Herald - no
    bless - no

    "Featured Submission?"

Perhaps once a sub acquires a number of votes in a defined interval, it gets put on the 'front page' like a magazine.  This could also be used for any sub that gets 2 HOH's - this will defuse a lot of Cheka' spurious HOH's.

    "Strolen's Choice" ?

  15. Re: Admin Chatter

    #775
Featured is better. I don't mind it going straight to the frontpage. That is good in my opinion.

I like a limit to create a HoH too. If it gets featured by 3-5 different people it earns the HoH?
  16. Re: Admin Chatter

    #776
If it will depend on votes of several people, then we may never get a HoH at all. :|

Plus this would break the dynamic of the whole thing... you want something to push into public view in yet another way, you just do it. Don't kill it for everyone because of some person. Let's see how the time limit performs first.
  17. Re: Admin Chatter

    #777
    Featured = current HoH

New HoH = 3+ or whatever Features. So if Cheka Features everything, it just gets put to the front page, but if 2 more people feature it then it gets a HoH status.

In theory anyway. I am sort of like the concept. There is more there, still stewing the idea.

72 hours a good enough stretch? We can experiment.
  18. Re: Admin Chatter

I dont have much to add, except to say I mostly agree with Strolen.

People, lets not extrapolate the "issues and problems" of the HoH, voting, etc...from Cheka to the world at large.

The problem is 99.99% Cheka. Lets face it (as Strolen has :)). Which is why I don't agree with Moon's ideas. Moon, you seem to take Cheka's picadillos and apply them to everyone else.

This issue comes to a head everytime Cheka goes on one of his HoH jigs. During this time, if someone else (someone normal) also happens to HoH 1-2 things, you get the chaos of 4-5 HoH'd subs a day for 3-4 days in a row.

We should not have to change the entire system because of one peculiar (but lovable) member.

In closing, I agree with the leaving Golden as is, and would like to add my "poo-poo" to the "spotlight" idea.

I LOVE the 3-4 featured hits idea in order to earn 1 HoH.

    LOVE it.

    What Muro said
  20. Re: Admin Chatter

    #780
I approve and support what Strolen said. Works for me.

    To address Muro:
One of the reasons the rest of us regulars don't HoH as often is because Cheka does. So either we need to ....

Censure Cheka and tell him to stop using the HoH votes he has every day. Try to educate him on what is going on with HoHs and the Scale of Voting (and that a large submission is not automatically a 5.0).  And make it stick for longer than a week.  Or just keep on him every week.
Oh and a 72 hour response just means he will wait.

    or

    implement some changes.

Which do YOU want to do?

And some of the changes I suggested are to help others, who are not reading this thread (which is a significant percentage of our "community") feel like they can give a HoH.  Part of people's resistance is the write up they have. Once you read that, many people feel underqualified to give them (then Cheka confuses them with it...).

A less intimidating structure might support others. We know what it is supposed to be used for. We know how to use the site. We have overcome the learning curve. Others, have not.

A change of said structure (which is basically a name change and some tiny changes in some other text.. which I will end up writing so you don't) will help others "bring things up" that they think are "cool", "interesting", or "worth looking at".

And besides, even if you "fix" Cheka, there is always "the next one". Thus fixing the user might not be as efficient as fixing the system.

Do we have the 72 hour moratorium already? I would like to see it in effect.
  22. Re: Admin Chatter

    #782
I would like to see Cheka's Golden votes taken away! :P
  23. Re: Admin Chatter

    #783
Golden? How about HOHs?  Scissor sword HOH'd???

The stuff that is on this site and that is what gets HOH'd?
  24. Re: Admin Chatter

    #784
Muro: Unless you want to strip Cheka (and anyone you think is like him) of his ranks - there is a use of admin power I don't want to think about - you need to address the system, not the people.

Cheka is not the only annoyance/ abuse in the system. Others are as well. Just nobody does it as often as Cheka does. Our other big annoyances seem to have gone away for now. It is just a matter of time before they come back OR new ones show up for a time.

Val, you now see why I want to change the text and the emphasis of HoH to Featured. Then you don't feel as bad.
  25. Re: Admin Chatter

    #785
Actually Moon, I suggested 'Featured' below :) - Yours was spotlight.  Semantics of course.

...and after much whining and bickering some people received, what they they wanted, even as the discussion raged on and seemed to engulf all eternity...
~ From the Book Of Eternal Tech Support ~

Me, I don't like those Features and Spotlights that much, I would really like to see the 72 hours limit on the HoHs. Therefore, it was done.

Please retest. We happen to have a lot of recent submissions, so you should have an easy time verifying that it is impossible to give a HoH to anything that was submitted less than three days ago.

Let's see how this experiment works.
  27. Re: Admin Chatter

    #787
    Hmm. How about this.

We have a spot open on the main page for the 'flavour of the week'.  I.e. The highest ranking (by votes) submission submitted in the last 7 days.  This would be recalculated daily to prevent it from disappearing too quickly.  This designation would NOT earn additional XP, only increase the chance of it being voted upon.

i.e. If in a swarm of new subs, one really stands out, it should have some means of being heralded as being worth a look.

The current new system has the unfortunate effect that exceptional recent posts can be pushed out of view by a swarm of less good posts.  I keep about 20+ viewable, so I'm less likely to miss it, but still...

  28. Re: Admin Chatter

    #788
    I like that idea.
  29. Re: Admin Chatter

    #789
And as predicted, Cheka waited 72 hours, then hit the "new submission" with HoH.

So unless he gets bored or confused, we have just pushed off the HoH issue for 72 hours.
  30. Re: Admin Chatter

    #790
Maybe the 72 hours should check the last comment. If the sub has been active through comments or updates then no HoH is authorized.
  31. Re: Admin Chatter

    #791
I think we need to understand why Cheka is doing this, what the purpose of an HOH is, and what behaviour we wish to encourage.

Cheka likes to vote with an exclamation point, and has a low threshold for "Wow!".  Our Paula Abdul so to speak.  I think this is not a bad thing to have, so long as other 'judges' balance his impact. Be happy that someone is voting and voting often, even if he is somewhat cheapening the process.

To that end, I still think that it should take more then one HOH type vote to acutally get a sub into the spotlight.

Perhaps when one person HOH's it, the icon beside the sub turns into a thumbs up, etc, showing that at least someone thinks its good, but does not put it in a special area or otherwise impact the listing.  When 3 people HOH it, then it gets moved up top to the 'spotlighted' slot.

    My thoughts...

  32. Re: Admin Chatter

Excellent thoughts and this will be implemented on the new site for an experiment to see how we like it.

"When can I stick a HoH on this?" - Echomirage
"I am impressed cheka, this has healthy doses of awesome and win. Expect an HoH when it is
    eligible" - Scrasamax

People DO want the ability to highlight even new posts.  I think we should excellerate the experiment if we can.

Am back. Been in England. Had a great time. Have little time now. Will catch up though.

    See you around!
  37. Re: Admin Chatter

    #797
It is going to be a cultural change for us. We are used to slapping them on there when ever we want. Now we can't.  Some people are not yet used to it.  We need to make the change on these.

This is the trade off you are going to have when we now emphasize older subs, instead of the new exciting thing.

If the 72 hour experiment is not working, I might suggest we change the emphasis and the naming convention and go that route.

I am not saying it isn't working out (thought there is some good and bad to it in most peoples opinions), I just think we might need to give it some more time to make sure.  If you all think it isn't, lets try somethign new.

Note: We can't make it a level thing to do instant HoH's either. Though ideally you would think people would learn, they won't. And unless you want to strip Cheka of his rank, his level is high enough to be comperable to several admins.

Val: in regards to your post a few back. You can try to reign in Cheka. A couple of us have done it. It lasts for a week or so, then he is back to doing it anyways. So unless you want to shepherd him... alot... we need to address the system, not the individual.

Remember, others do it to, Cheka is poster boy for the problem, the most constant one who does it.
  38. Re: Admin Chatter

    #798
I did not advocate reigning in Cheka, but the requirement that at least two people agree should be enough to eliminate 90% of the occurances.  How many subs with 1 HOH are HOH'd by cheka might be an interesting metric.

You are right, I haven't been at home long enough to get into it. I look at it about once a day thinking that though if it is any consolation....
