That ability might be worth adding an "if admin" on the edit page to allow admins to add it to a quest at any time. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#684Anybody know who ArathenaSK@gmail.com is?
Christopher Dunn?
They donated $15 and want thank them and let them know I got it. Just found it buried in my account. I switched email clients and finally got the filters working better. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#685No idea really... guess you can send an e-mail on the address thanking the person.
(You could also do the sneaky orwellian thing and peek into the database to find out. We have their data, afterall. :twisted: ) -
Re: Admin Chatter
#686I sent 50 for dice, does that count? :P -
Re: Admin Chatter
#687Two things about links.
As seen here, the parsing is not quite perfect yet... a bracket became part of the link.
And here is shown that there are also too long links. One of those smart link shorteners would be nice.
---
Regular links still don't work as they should, and seeing this I have to wonder - don't we have somewhere installed a package for parsing and filtering html code? We could delegate the work to it, and be done with all the mess. Would leave more time for other things as well. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#688I use htmlpurifier for, well take a look at the site. It is my cleaner.
The parsing is this:
function link_title($title, $node)
{
$link = explode("|", stripslashes($title), 2);
if (count($link) > 1)
{
$link_2 = explode("#", $link, 2);
if (count($link) > 1)
{
$final_url = 'content.php?node=' . urlencode($link_2);
}
else
{
$final_url = 'content.php?node=' . urlencode($link);
}
return '' .$link. '';
}
else
{
$final_url = 'content.php?node=' . urlencode($link);
return '' . $link . '';
}
}
function parse_links($text, $node = 0)
{
// $text = str_replace("[[", "~", $text);
// $text = preg_replace( '/(http|ftp)+(s)?:(\/\/)((\w|\.)+)(\/)?(\S+)?/i', '\4', $text );
$ret = ' ' . $text;
$ret = preg_replace("#(^|[\n ])([\w]+?://[\w]+[^ \"\n\r\t -
Re: Admin Chatter
#689Oh, come on, people. Can't we drift away for a meager few weeks without the whole place starting to fall apart? -
Re: Admin Chatter
#690Well the site has had some code related issues. But that is not all of it.
I have been trying to drive new traffic to the site. I have been posting on www.rpg.net and a couple of other places. Yes, the link to here is in my .sig . However, I have been posting parts of articles (most of which I wrote) and subs (so far, all of which I wrote) with links back. I gave everyone I played with at the convention strolen's url and my handle here.
You know that "big sites" have "membership drives". RPG.Net is pushing for 380 new members. I think they made it. Now our numbers would never be that big. However, the site lives or dies (okay becomes zombie like, not really dying) by new members and submitters. We just need more peoples.
And one of the ways to make this "a place to stop" is more new content, with that content being easier to use and apply to their games. But you have all heard me about that. (#2, #2, #2, now go post). So lets get the site moving in other ways.
So I know you all go, "good for MoonHunter". Maybe some of you should buy into trying to move people to the site, to recruit/ draft people. You know gamers, invite them to the site. You post on other game sites, sig line back to here or post things that can have links back to a sub here on this world. If you don't post on other game sites, either go find a site or start posting. Post up a flyer at your friendly local game store about the site (if you have one).
Okay. I throw down the glove. Now let see if we can meet that challange. -

#691In response to Moon's thrown gauntlet I got out my book
http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,4437.0.html
It may not be exactly what you meant Moon, but I think it is just as necessary. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#692Thanks for moving that sub off the main site Muro. Good call! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#693My pleasure. Kinda rude actually, what he did. He was obviously bright enough to quickly figure out how to post a sub. He could have just as quickly figured out that what he was posting didnt belong there.
Btw, the e-zine is kinda cool. But still. -

We are approaching the same issue from different angles. But I have this angle covered.
I have only three and a half words to say on your side of the subject
TASK PAGES and REGIONS
You know what I am talking about. You have seen the post up on that.
http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,4104.0.html
WE need to rework the front page, making it cleaner (as much as I like Kate's graphics, they time to load (and are a pain on my PDA/Phone).
It will have the mission statement and directions to choose a "direction" on the page (i.e. to pick a task page).
We could begin to impliment the pages now, by simply shifting the link in the upper right hand side and starting the task pages. When you are happy with a new front page design, then we would be ready for it.

I am trying to be brief in my posts, as I tend to be wordy.
Dilettantes
We dabble. Nobody has the commitment to finish a large project or post regularly. So we have some great stuff, but there is no way we can commit to a regular schedule with the admin/ members we have now and honestly stick to it.
And some of us can produce the volume, but tend to bounce between projects and other commitments. Yes, I know my issues.
Find a way to motivate us to do this for more than three months Muro, and you will create a great e-zine, PDF publishing powerhouse.

Re: Admin Chatter
#697Yepper, I haven't forgotten!
Once I have a frontpage design then the rest will quickly follow. I am working diligently on trying to come up with something clean, simple, and meaningful. The task pages and our Read Post Play are keys to that design. I will be dumping that top navigation that is simply too much with too many options. It will be available elsewhere if wanted.
My plan is to come up with a couple styles/layouts and see what tickles me. I have collected a lot of stuff and have some ideas but without trying them...well, they are always awesome in the mind.
Once we get something together for 3.0 then I can probably port the layout with the current graphics to slowly move us into that direction.

Re: Admin Chatter
#698Ezine:
It didn't take that much work to reformat the roleplayingtips pdf. I think the major roadblock is choosing the content and editing it if needed. The tips pdf had a structured format that was recognizeable and understandable. Most of the city books and such have a structure to it that each one conforms too. I think one of the major hurdles is getting a type of cohesion and useability to a quantity of posts enough to base a single pdf on.
The quests may work, but you can't just throw them together and call it good, has to be something to tie them together. At least those were my roadblocks whenever I looked at trying one. -

LOOK AT THAT FRICK'N AWESOME PROFILER of the page at the bottom. Memory usage, variables, queries. THAT ROCKS!

#701I like the design, oh wait, I did that one.
I do like the colors. I love that expanding boxes.
The Shadows of the box? is it supposed to be there?

Re: Admin Chatter
#704So what about that valadaar guy? When do we promote him?
There have been plans to do it last year or so... but there seemed to be no real necessity pushing us. A new version will bring new pressures, as the new server already does. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#705I second manfred's semi-nomination! val deserves it. -

Re: Admin Chatter
#707Sounds all good.
Moon?
Strolen?
...
Lurkers? :)

Another topic: the quest is over for one. While the voting goes on, another drive would be nice. So what do we do?
Pieh poked into the Freetext Fiesta, which may be just the right thing. More of good freetext entries are always welcome, and the runs before produced quite a bit of content.
We could also go seasonal... do a "Easter Creature Challenge", or whatever, to celebrate that holiday.
Ideas? -
Re: Admin Chatter
#708I love valadaar.
I have small worries about Cheka getting passed over all the time though. He keeps the site moving as much as anybody in his own way and still isn't a "made" Strolenite. Are there others that we have passed over? Not without just cause, but it might be disheartening to be in the trenches day in and day out and get no real recognition for it.
We originally brought this up awhile ago and I stalled. I hesitated to make more people full admins. 3.0 will have a much better level system where authority and rank (for loss of better words at the moment) will be more tied to what they pull in (site participation) than to personal preferences. In that way most those will have solid rank in the site anyway. I will still be able to assign perks, but the calculated default system is less arbitrary and rewards consistant loyalty over favorites. (I just watched the Sopranos, forgive the goombah metaphors)
Not to say we don't have to. But this is a social site and we have seen disgruntleness between the families. We want to keep this off the matress and keep earning. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#709Yay for Val. As for Cheka... I dunno what to say about that. He means well, but he usually makes me go "wut?" Here's the question: I know we're upgrading to version 3.0, which will have nifty new bits. Do the new bits mean that we need more admins? Or do those of us who lurk (okay, maybe just me...) need to do more?
Also, Freetext Fiesta = :up:
Note to self, it's time to clean the rp forums out again. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#710Nobody needs to do anything. There are no requirements.
But the thought is that the site can be more community moderated. Like anybody will be able to identify spam. Say if 3 people in level one or two tag a comment as spam, it will get deleted, or it would only take 1 person at level 6 or something. Somebody will be able to recategorize a sub at level X and stuff like that. There really is not much to admin when it comes down to it. But what there is I want to make it easier for it to happen, just simple low threat stuff like that.
The new system will probably only have one entire site admin, and that will be me. But the permission system will be more so that the all or nothing approach to taking care of the site won't be necessary anymore. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#711I had this idea once of having a submission for deleted comments only, where all the deleted comments would travel (but not if someone deletes their own comment). That way we can be much more lenient in allowing people to delete comments, but we can keep the IPs and content, in case of a large scale spam attack or doubts. Other tools could be assisted by this (blocking IPs that spam too much, etc). -
Re: Admin Chatter
#712...and when I say there is not much to admin, I mean functionally, not in practice. The admin process is huge and there are many things that happen daily that I will never know (but appreciate immensely), but when it comes to coding them, there are not a lot of functions that have to be provided to make admining the board easier/better. That is what I meant by the statement if it wasn't very clear...
(trying to preempt you Muro since I reread my post)
Admin stuff I intend to put in - off the top of my head
Ability to change categories (for much higher moderators - probably assigned to those I can trust...current admins pretty much)
Ability to edit freetext (an easier way than going all the way into the full submission, a quick edit that doesn't update the "updated" date)
Edit/Delete comments (of course. Could be a community vote for low lvls as mentioned or a trusted can just axe it instantly if it is that bad or they can join the vote)
Hide submission or change their status (don't want them deleted necessarily, but put into private and require an edit and approval should be pretty easy when necessary)
Then there will be the "requires approval" type submissions that need high mod approval to be posted. Chills stuff has that now. Lower levels again can vote perhaps while higher can just do it or help with the vote.
I can't really think of more. Let me know if you can think of any.

Re: Admin Chatter
#713Okay... how about that Quest?
Oh, and Strolen, how about just dumping this winter template (or is it only me), and fix us something warmer, and more welcoming? Things are also still funny around... we need to make sure the place is stable after the last upheaval. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#714We did hit spring at some point didn't we?
When I have time to redo the template for the forum I will do the update. -

Just visiting other sites and finding topics that related to things on Strolens. I think this one will bring people here. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#716While you are there, throw them some of this link: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=4382
As an aside, methinks during the weekend I should actually attempt to fix some of the horrible bugs we have. That was a warning. :) -
Re: Admin Chatter
#717Those aren't bugs, they are FEATURES!! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#718Fixed that email one. Another one with the database change.
If I didn't fix them all, when there are errors like emailAddress and memberName errors the new database changed them all to a new format email_address and member_name. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#719A few more features, just so we don't forget them. :D
When Anonymous/BH, the 'Recent Posts' are strangely shortened to 5 or so posts. Also, it is the bare Simple Machines Forum.
Still no shoutbox in the forums.
All submissions have all their comments marked as new, even the really old ones. Note: fix also the replies-to comments, and scrolls!
In the main site, 'Users Online' links lead nowhere (funnily enough usernames in the chatroom are linked to their profiles).
The textbox for forum posts is surprisingly small. Gotta play with the styles.
Log out, or New Since Last Visit still not working properly, still shows older comments - the really new ones are displayed correctly however.
Noticed that some of the listings are incorrectly counted... say 'Uncommented', if you go to the last page, it is empty, as evidence something is missing. (I think this one was there before the update.)
Users Visited Today is missing from the forum. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#720I tried to fiddle with the forums, but I can't seem to access the template settings, so I leave those to you Strolen. :)
Also to do: the showing of new stuff still isn't quite perfect... the New Since Last Visit and the marked 'new comments' both show partially wrong results. Is it the logout process?
