Re: Admin Chatter
#362
Indeed, up with Ra!
I don't give a rat's hairy ass about this whole voting battle. I think it's fine the way it is. You can't really fight human nature, people will vote how they want to, and besides, the more crazy rules and limits and mechanisms we place on voting, the less appealing putting out the actual vote is. I mean, I think you are all really taking this way to seriously.
I think this whole dog-and-pony-show is distracting from the real purpose of this site, which is creativity and ideas. The more we concentrate on mechanics and "fairness", the more distracted we are from actually creating innovative, creative, interesting posts.
And, frankly, this brouhaha is just sucking the fun right out of participating in Strolen's Citadel. It's like the A-bomb: everybody's good, everybody's having a fun time, then it comes along, and BOOM, everybody's dead.
To quote Archimedes Plutonium: "Calm down, man, this is the Internet, this is not Vietnam, go play some par golf or tennis set."
:D
Been waiting for ages to see you get into action like that, Cappo! And when you finally did, you did it with your own exotic style :D
I yield to the eloquent entity known as the CaptainPenguin. Still, I advocate these things because I sincerely believe they would be for the better. If it upsets anyone, I will quit coming with such suggestions.
;) -
Re: Admin Chatter
#363Oh, no, they'd probably make the place better, they just aren't making the place any FUNNER right now. Please, don't feel afraid to suggest things... You're smarter than all of us anyway. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#364Well, if I am so smart, I'll have to do the following:
*Ahem*
Okay. So I have been thinking a lot. A bit too much as normal, but still. Here goes (I'll be brief):
Dear Strolen:
Thank you for your wisdom and balance throughout the years. I have noticed some stress in you as the Citadel passed through dire waters, but regardless of fault or intensity of anger in your admins, you have always kept your tongue straight in your mouth (Hope that is a term in the states too). I think you can chill down now, though. This place is gonna be alright.
Dear MoonHunter:
We've made a few errors you and me, and I think we both know that. Bygones are bygones however and the citadel benefits from the both of us. So if you feel like I do, let us bury the past and focus on the future.
Dear Ria Hawk:
We've been howling and yelling a lot about the quests. I think that shows most of all that we are an enthusiastic bunch. I wish there could have been more like us (so there would be a higher rate of participation), but it seems there is not. Regardless: You do a fine job as a Quest Administrator. No doubt about that. When we challenge the rules, we challenge them and not you ;)
Dear Scrasamax:
Sorry for stepping on your toes. I weigh 260 pounds, so I know it must hurt.
Dear Shadoweagle:
I really, really like your ideas. Do come back now and then.
Dear manfred, Murometz, CaptainPenguin and lurkers (Yes, that means you ephe):
I got nothing to say to you really, but I didn't want to forget you in my Oscar speech. ;) Keep up the good work! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#365*somebody mumbling in the crowd* "Oh no, he's giving the Oscar speech again."
:) :p -
Re: Admin Chatter
#366Hooray for AG!
And honestly, I don't think i'll ever permanently leave this site - even if I lose interest for a while, or there is a particularly stressful time in work or any other excuse, I'll one day find myself sitting down at the computer and typing in this URL again.
And hey, while we're all doing the pats on the back,
Dear Ancient Gamer: You are very opinionated. And that is meant in the best way - your strict line of thinking and acting makes decisions happen when others would sit around waiting for someone else to make the first move. If that sometimes rubs people the wrong way, don't worry about it - you aren't in the wrong for voicing your opinion; THEY are in the wrong for refusing to accept that your thoughts may sometimes differ from theirs.
Keep up da good werk! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#367I am hosting the post-oscar party at my place. Jack Nicholson and AG have already RSVP'd. See you all there! :P -
Re: Admin Chatter
#368All hail Wulfhere! he's a keeper! yay! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#369Seems to be, anyhow -
Re: Admin Chatter
#370Going to check out the tee's Monday. If all is well with the design and material, Cap and Scras will be sent their jerkins next week! I'll take a picture of them too, and upload it via Art Gallery for everyone's perusal. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#371We want to see the picture! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#372so you shall...dude told me that even the Strolen's Dragon icon (upper back..small) came out swell! Cant wait to see them!

Re: Admin Chatter
#375Ah, woe is me too!
I am going to do one regardless. Just for the fun of it. As for you, master of lifeforms, get your act together and publish the talking pet. ;)

Re: Admin Chatter
#378Anybody notice the huge amount of hits on most all of the codices? Yikes. Not sure what is driving that besides bots and not sure if it would be worth fixing. That would mean doing yet another database check on every hit on every page just to stop a hit increment. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#379Yeah. Probably link following bots going in circles. Just proves that hit counters can't be trusted.
On the other hand: You could do a once per IP hit counter. There should be some code on the net for that. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#380Just a matter of adding more non-value adding code that adds up as the server gets busier. Easy to do, just not sure of the overall worth of it. Probably needs to be done though. People probably like to know how many hits they are getting on their stuff. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#381Had an odd one today. By the signs of it all, Shadow and Ria already had this too. Rei leads an odd life and I am somewhat glad to be a norwegian country bumpkin. This is kind of personal, but he has already told about it in several chats.
How should we react to stuff like this in the future?
7:57 pm: you see... I was kinda forced to be a girl's fiancee.... If I dont want to.... what should I do? (I have told this to ria and maggot)
7:57 pm: arranged marriage?
7:57 pm: forced ....
7:58 pm: dang
7:58 pm: The girl's father is persistent
7:58 pm: is she pregnant?
7:59 pm: time is up
[Ancient Gamer] 7:59 pm: Yeah? Is that the reason?
7:59 pm: Its not something like that scras
7:59 pm: The reason is quite uh..... unreasonable I think
8:00 pm: should i tell the story?
[The Citadel]: Scrasamax has left at 8:00 pm
[Ancient Gamer] 8:00 pm: Well, Rei. You see, we are westerners. Forced marriages and arranged marriages haven't been part of our culture for nearly a decade
[Ancient Gamer] 8:00 pm: Yes
[Ancient Gamer] 8:00 pm: I mean a century
[Ancient Gamer] 8:00 pm: 100 years
8:00 pm: nooo
8:01 pm: its not about culture or anything
8:01 pm: it has nothing to do with culture or tradition
[Ancient Gamer] 8:01 pm: So... What is up?
[Ancient Gamer] 8:02 pm: You got to tell me if I am to give you any advice
8:02 pm: The girl requested to her father.... now that I said no once to her she understood.... but her father keeps pushing me....
[Ancient Gamer] 8:02 pm: Do you love this girl?
8:02 pm: welll....
8:02 pm: I really cant say so
8:02 pm: or maybe so...
[Ancient Gamer] 8:02 pm: Go on
8:02 pm: yeah I do but....
8:03 pm: you see....
[Ancient Gamer] 8:03 pm: So, your family has money and hers has not?
8:04 pm: she's to young... and I think that she might still find a better man.... that is...
8:04 pm: uh...
8:04 pm: the other way around...
8:04 pm: she's one of the richest girl in our village....
8:05 pm: Shall I tell you the whole story?
8:05 pm: should I?
[Ancient Gamer] 8:05 pm: Rei, you are young. Life has much to offer and when the time to marry has come you will know.
[Ancient Gamer] 8:05 pm: Yes, okay
[Ancient Gamer] 8:08 pm:
8:09 pm: well.... She was my neighbor... at least a few blocks away.... While I was doing my errands I saw her roaming around.... I was suppose to say
hello but a snatcher took her bag and run..... since the snatcher is going to the entrance(wer I am) and since she was screaming for help..... I just pulled him by
the collar and kick his legs and hit his neck.... and got her bag back.... after that... I got an invitation to go to their house(mansion is more likely) and then
bam..... there it goes...
8:10 pm: ( actually I got hit at the forhead...
[Ancient Gamer] 8:10 pm: Ah. Okay
[Ancient Gamer] 8:10 pm: Well, Rei.
[Ancient Gamer] 8:11 pm: As I said: You are young and you have much left of your life. When you meet the right girl you will know.
8:11 pm: then her father told me to be her fiancee... I said no politely... she understand... she told me... but her father was persistent and keeps on
bugging me to be her fiancee and all.... now his still bugging me for 4 straight weeks...
8:11 pm: I mean....
8:12 pm: I do like the girl (she's my type anyway) but she's to young... she's still around 12 to 14
[Ancient Gamer] 8:12 pm: He likes you then. Allies and friends are important. Be very, very polite to him. Tell him you think his daughter is a lovely woman.
Also tell him you are young. Too young to marry.
8:12 pm: she still has the presence of time to find someone better....
8:13 pm: her father never cares.....
8:13 pm: and my mother and father never cares....
[Ancient Gamer] 8:13 pm: Well, be polite anyways. You cannot yield to pressure like that. What does YOUR parents (or maid) tell you?
[Ancient Gamer] 8:14 pm: So find a gold ring and tell them you got married.
[Ancient Gamer] 8:14 pm: Check their reactiong
[Ancient Gamer] 8:14 pm: reaction
8:14 pm: I wish I could have done that...
[Ancient Gamer] 8:14 pm: (without marrying of course)
8:14 pm: but they know me...
[Ancient Gamer] 8:14 pm: Nah, you want my advice: Continue saying no.
8:15 pm: my maid laughed at me and told me that im just to lucky....
[Ancient Gamer] 8:15 pm: Wait 5 more years at least before you do something like that. Besides, if she is 12 years old, she is a child in every possible way
8:15 pm: my parents said "arent you supposed to be happy?"
[Ancient Gamer] 8:15 pm: You are 15? 16? 17?
8:15 pm: Well...
8:16 pm: im 19....
[Ancient Gamer] 8:16 pm: Hehe
[Ancient Gamer] 8:16 pm: And she is 12?
8:16 pm: what?
8:16 pm: dunno
8:16 pm: she looks more like 14 and all...
[Ancient Gamer] 8:16 pm: Ouch
[Ancient Gamer] 8:16 pm: Very young
8:16 pm: yes...
8:17 pm: well... I do like the girl but I dont want the girl =_=
[Ancient Gamer] 8:17 pm: So be her boyfriend and not her husband
8:17 pm: and hell... why me???
8:18 pm: what did I do to make thi happen?
[Ancient Gamer] 8:18 pm: But do make sure she is old enough, so you don't end up with legal problems
[Ancient Gamer] 8:18 pm: You saved her, you big hero you
8:18 pm: ...
8:18 pm: anyone would have done the same...
8:18 pm: would they?
[Ancient Gamer] 8:18 pm: Odd, I find the time has come to quote Cheka Man: "Sometimes it is right to leave a woman in distress bound and gagged"

Re: Admin Chatter
#383So whaddya think? Overly active imagination or a strange case of 14 year old vixens entrapping juvenile 19 year olds? -
Re: Admin Chatter
#384I think it is a good idea for a plot and possibly an NPC or two. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#385:twisted: -
Re: Admin Chatter
#386As for the coding: yup, don't add clutter if it isn't worth. Especially if we have so many bugs.
---
As for the chat :what: -
Re: Admin Chatter
#387Well, I didnt save the chat, but Rei, Maggot, Ria and me had a bit of it too.
something like:
Rei: LOL?
Murometz: LOL...question mark??? Your asking me if your laughing? Your not sure?
Ria: ^^
Rei: no, seriously, help me guys!
Ria: merf
Maggot: lets hear the details
Murometz: must we?
Maggot: yes
Murometz: *sigh* ok
Ria: you need medication
Rei: me?
Murometz: me?
Ria: both of you
Rei: here's what happened...:blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...and she's beautiful, rich, and young too!
Murometz: marry her...get rich. I am just not seeing the issue here...
Rei: no, I care nothing for money
Murometz: right, I forgot, sorry.
Maggot: How old was she?
Rei: 15-16 I think.
Rei: or maybe 12-14, not sure.
Murometz: :what:
Ria: oy
Murometz: WHAT!!!???? your not sure? Which is it? 12 or 16?
Maggot: maybe 9-10? I forget :P

Re: Admin Chatter
#388My opinion? Overly active imagination.
It seems too fanciful to be anything but. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#389Yeah... after everyone left last night, I somehow got stuck playing Dear Abby. For two hours. Be glad you missed it. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#390There's no way any of that is true.
I'm sorry, that just doesn't happen, at least not in the Phillippines. I mean, I know it isn't, like, Florida, but it isn't Kazakhstan, either.
I'd say overactive imagination. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#391Well, what I found most peculiar was his alleged age. No way he is 19. :p -
Re: Admin Chatter
#392I will now make a comparison between Strolen's and a pub! Each and every pub lives and dies by its clientelle. As a son of woman rather fond of pubs, I spent a lot of my youth in those installations and I have witnessed the rise and fall of several pubs. Let me now tell you how things can go very wrong.
Take one successful pub, let us call it "Strolen's Citadel Pub". It has the right clientelle: Successful, skilled and artistic professionals that thrive in the company of each other. Everything is jolly and the bartender, Strolen, does a makeover and the pub is now all new and shiny. Then along comes trouble in the form of rather undesirable patrons. They yell and they scream and they tear the tapestry down from the walls. For a while the bouncers despair and even forget their usual petty infighting and bickering, and they focus on the troublemakers. Due to a rather strict set of laws in effect at this establishment, they can do naught but use stern language, urging these troublemakers to get a dayjob and treat the pub with respect. Alas, it seems as if the newcomers speak another language for the efforts of the bouncers prove in vain and one day the newcomers have done the unthinkable, they have desecrated the penguin lounge!
Now, the old patrons remain, but their eyes are filled with tears. No longer does newcomers arrive, only one or another lone wolf without sanctuary, and the newcomers slowly rise in numbers, other is-no-goods lured by their siren call (more like the rabid barking of a diseased dog, actually).
After a while Strolen's Citadel Pub goes bankrupt. The owner no longer has a positive influx of money, and the old clientelle has abandoned his pub. All that remains are unwashed youth whose destructive efforts brought the best pub in town to its knees! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#393Don't panic. :)
It's only one room set aside for the sickest of our tendencies, that is infested. As long as it is contained, we are safe. We do have all manner of means at our disposal to deal with it, it is just few of them fit this annoyance - which is only logical, since other threats or annoyances can be quickly suppressed. There's always a problem, or potential to it that stands out. I don't consider this one serious in any way. Sure we could just close it down, but as you know (as can be seen by your new thread for us admins ;) ), we need such places. Contain it, perhaps try to cultivate the discussion a little, and cull the posts which take up most useless space. We have much more important places than the Dung Heap.
Now, I would never think of Strolen's as a pub, but... you know, there is something to it. We are not a pub, but there is an interesting parallel to it - both in the role it seems to play in our lives, and in the way some of us have fun here. :D
But we are not a pub. We can have a lot of fun on our own, and we do have surprising newbies now and then (and hey! Did you notice the recent surge in posts?) - there's never many good newbies. As always, some members stay, some leave.
I think what may be behind that observation is what I noticed too: the forums are getting quiet. It's been a long crawl downwards since V2, with occassional breaks, but they are at last again a mere service forum for the main site. Leaving out the Freeform RP part, the only place with significant activity is the Cavern - and if it's quiet everywhere, you can hear the weird sounds better.
So what we need is more stuff for the forums. See: most of the activities there are of occassional nature. There's not much to do besides the Freeform (which is not for everyone), that wouldn't degrade into nonsense sooner or later. Nonsense is fine, but... you know the rest.
Ideas? -
Re: Admin Chatter
#394Just a toss out...the point was to get most of the discussion out of the forum and into the main site. The main site is the bread and butter and the forum was suppose to deteriorate as a catch all for those limited discussions that have no room in the main.
Not that I am against any ideas for the forum, just saying that the forum is pretty much exactly where we wanted it in our v2.0 plan.
I would, however, like to figure out a way to make the roleplaying part more prominant in the forum. THAT, in my opinion, is what the forum would be good for and what would make the biggest compliment to the main site now. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#395Plus, we can make it policy that any post with less then, say, ten words is free game for the admins. Leave some trash threads, though CP's Call thread may be reclaimed. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#396Another toss out...
The inane set of threads are staying. Yes, annoying but VERY necessary. We can't use them ourselves for such a long time and then suddenly deam them garbage and say they are destroying the citadel. They are confined and while there might be more threads than usual (I did dump and merge a couple yesterday...did you notice?) they are exactly where we allow them to be and they are staying confined so we should just let them be. But we are elitists and don't like the garbage so we keep them under tight reign. Looking at other places we are still doing a hell of a job keeping that kind of crap isolated. The biggest complaint was that they keep showing up in the "new posts" quickie list. Still in the right place though! And using them in any capacity, even to degrade them as I and AG do occassionally, is not helping either. We all sort of hate them, but if they weren't there to direct the noobs then we would be overcome in the real areas of the citadel.
I don't see AG's metaphor as even close to happening (although I would not argue the validity). Manfred said it, there is another small room off the main area where you can hear the inane conversation and it does bleed over a little bit no matter how confined it is. It will only disturb you if you allow it to. The main part of the pub is a quiet place of reflection, more like a library atmosphere with walls full of posted reading material. It is a huge room with many tables and only a few are full and sitting at them are people having quiet, directed conversation for a few moments till they grab something else off the shelf/wall and sit at another table to have another conversation about what they just read. Many others walk in, read the walls and leave without doing anything or talking to anybody. Off another side is the forum room which is somewhat quiet too but a little more rowdy and welcoming.
So do we want to somehow promote the forum area and grow the RP section? That is the only part that should grow in the forum. Everything else content-wise should find it's place in the main. -
Re: Admin Chatter
#397Annoying but necessary, just as I said.
*ponders* What about some creative writing, where several people write a story together? Like those stories we tried to put in the main site, but didn't seem to work much. They are very close to freeforming, and the forum may be a better place for them... in the main site things tend to fade after a short hype, then are occassionaly rediscovered (hard to break that, by the amount of new subs). We can try a few, then make a separate forum for them so they stay visible. Rules and guidelines would be adapted from the Freeform.

Re: Admin Chatter
#398I still think we need a live rpg thing, but that is for the other thread.
I seem to be the pessimist around here and my concerns aren't taken too seriously. Well, I do rouse a debate and thank you for that. We cannot deny that the increase in natter is getting at our nerves but then again: an increase in visitors means an increase in every kind of visitors. For long we just had to contend with Rei/Greccio, though Nosredna was kind of one of them too. Now that Chucky, T-roan and catalyst has joined the team, they are hitting us hard.
...But you are right. I'd rather have Rei in the natter area than in the main citadel.
But mark these words: We adults require natter from time to time too. Some of us might be less inclined to idle chatter, while other *cough* such as I *cough* need more. But I am not a drooling idiot. I find no quality or pleasure in the company of annoying children. I want "intelligent" natter... clever jokes and subtle duality. I want to read hilarous and clever comments. I do not care about age: Roack and Maggot are YOUNG, but they have their heads intact. Not so with Rei et al.
Get my meaning?
I want to contain the most tainted of youth to some areas, and have others for my own foolish ways.
I did dump and merge a couple yesterday...did you notice?
Yes!
You killed the "Slap me with an iron club" post. It was close to my heart, because I DO want them to be slapped with iron clubs! -
Re: Admin Chatter
#399I dumped the latest split from CP's thread too. Didn't want yet another forked thread of prime rib so opted to kill it in it's youth. Sorry Scras, if that was you that did the Cthulhu cleansing. Cleansing was perfect, but one prime rib is enough though. :) -
Re: Admin Chatter
#400I did perform the bifurcation, but I do not feel that my position as an Admin allows me the right to delete other people's pointless diatribes. I fell said right is reserved for the site Owner, Strolen. However, if granted said permission I will delete rather than split in the future.
Chthulu will be preserved
