Thank you for that and I, in general, I appreciate that thought because I do want to know about everything that is actually removed.

Maybe I should have done it in hindsight, but if you split, then you can also merge. I probably should have merged that thread into the  prime rib and then everything would be shiny. Feel free to do stuff like that for sure, and I am not too worried about purgings in the inane natter either.

    Thanks Scras!

I have a kind of odd request.  Is it possible for people to post something anonymously in the forum?  I'm kind of thinking like a "suggestion box."  Mostly, I want it so I can maybe get more suggestions for quest ideas.
  3. Re: Admin Chatter

    #403
Only problem is that if I open a forum up to anon, then it allows spam to use that forum as well.

I will look to see if there are alternatives but not sure it is needed. Should people be worried about putting in an idea about a quest that they want to be anon?
  4. Re: Admin Chatter

    #404
Meh, it was just a random thought.
  5. Re: Admin Chatter

    #405
Ideas, Suggestions, Bug Reports is open to anonymous posts, isn't it?

If a single forum is open, we can handle it.
  6. Re: Admin Chatter

    #406
It was, but I made it member quite awhile only after the spam started finding it.
  7. Re: Admin Chatter

    #407
I would like it to remain open, even with the side effects.

*ponders* What about some creative writing, where several people write a story together? Like those stories we tried to put in the main site, but didn't seem to work much. They are very close to freeforming, and the forum may be a better place for them... in the main site things tend to fade after a short hype, then are occassionaly rediscovered (hard to break that, by the amount of new subs). We can try a few, then make a separate forum for them so they stay visible. Rules and guidelines would be adapted from the Freeform.

    ?

Just had a talk with Mourngrymn, that works on a storyline for his game, and finds no particular forum to write it to. Seems we could really use a story thread.

    Ideas?

    - That comes from telling you players about a page you frequently visit. "Whatcha lookin at, man?" "Strolen's, an RPG discussion forum." "Ey, dat's neat, I wanna too." Here you go. Now I can't post anything I intend to use :(

    - I have that problem too! I don't dare post anything here anymore after a player looked over my shoulder and discovered my nickname. d**n that Google!

I vote for a "privileged" section in the new Citadel, simply because old time users increasingly is threatened by player discovery!
    * (for GMs with a certain number of posts, and with a expiration date on which the submission is transfered to the open section)

-Actually, it is one of the reasons I tend to post things with multiple options. So they might know generally what is going on, but they never know exactly what was going on.

    Culled from here: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=157

    Any thoughts on those comments?
  11. Re: Admin Chatter

    1. I think that a privelaged section would create a sort of elitism in the citadel, creating a bit of an us versus them attitude, since I am pretty sure that most of the admins would fall into that older section that would be so privelaged.

    2. If players accessing the citadel might come across plot or other relevant game information I would suggest one of several options:

Follow MoonHunter's advice and have multiple options to your submission, that way it isnt a play by play of how an adventure should roll out. Those that are written out blow by blow also tend to be super linear and railroad players along a preset path.

Use generic terms for persons, places, or items. While this might be frowned on slightly, as there is a certain demand for good names, this prevents players from stumbling across stuff they ought not be knowing.

hold the work as a work in progress in the hidden section until it is safe to be released, or leave it in in work viewable since these do not appear on the main page except at random, and are not flagged for new comments.

You know, I am happy on one thing around here, that didn't change since the beginning: the open-ness, allowing even anonymous users to comment on submissions. With useful, and less-than useful comments, I am always and again surprised on the weirder comments some people leave - whether they want to buy or find our magical items, ask if this is real, or even tell a story of spirits they heard about.

And you may try to answer them, but all you end up with is a locked up brain going "Huh?" :what: and laughing about the craziness. I like those occassional challenges to the sanity.

So if you see one, please think twice before removing them. They belong to the place, I think.
  13. Re: Admin Chatter

    Openness and freedom

Yeah, yeah. I know it conflicts with my anger venting in the admin fury thread, but the openness is part of what initially appealed to me. No privileged sections, no elitism (even though I am a closet elitist).

Elitism and arrogance... That is "The Forge" and them other guys. We are not like that!

    ...Are we?
  14. Re: Admin Chatter

    #414
We get damn close sometimes and there are those that have come and gone that would argue....BUT I don't want to become newb kiddie area either so far as we get taken over with crap.

As far as I am concerned, we need to have some standards but at the same time need to remain open enough to help a good intentioned newb. The rest can screw. ;)

I think we are doing OK in that respect. No complaints. I would rather scare off the occasionaly extreme newbie vs. lowering the quality standards we all prefer.
  15. Re: Admin Chatter

    #415
Yes. I do believe you are right.
Let us just hope we can maintain that fragile balance between quality control and fascist elitism. ;)
  16. Re: Admin Chatter

    #416
    What do you think?

No HoH votes in the first 24(?) hours of a submission.

  17. Re: Admin Chatter

    #417
    The purpose bieng...?
  18. Re: Admin Chatter

    #418
The purpose being overly enthusiastic HoH's I'd wager.

The question would be: Are we going too far to eliminate such things? Is this really necessary?
I dunno. More rules means more can go wrong at any given time. (code-bugwise mostly)
  19. Re: Admin Chatter

    #419
    It was an impulse.

Seems lately that all the new posts are getting the HoHs which wasn't really the point of them. They were made so that old posts could get front page action again, not so that new subs with new comments could get more front page action then they already have.

The more I think about it though, the worse the idea sounds...which is why I threw it out there.
  20. Re: Admin Chatter

    #420
That goes back to people using the HoH's they've earned as they see fit, and there's really not much we can do about it.  I suppose we could ask some of our more... enthusiastic members to pay more attention to older subs, but I don't know how effective that would be.
  21. Re: Admin Chatter

    #421
Nah, let them abuse it as they see fit. It was a phase I was going through. I am over it now.
  22. Re: Admin Chatter

What is the purpose of HoH?

What does it per today cover that high votes do not already cover?

Do we need HoH in its present form?

Is the HoH reward too great?

Does HoH in its present form pose as SPAM?

Could we delete it and replace it with "Honorable Mention" which only applies to posts that are older than 3 months?

Yes, I know I ask some of the same questions that you did, but I do it since I think they had merit!

    See above.

Do we need HoH in its present form?

    Yes

Is the HoH reward too great?

    Maybe, but mostly no.

Does HoH in its present form pose as SPAM?

    No

Could we delete it and replace it with "Honorable Mention" which only applies to posts that are older than 3 months?

    Maybe, but lean towards perhaps.

What is the purpose of HoH?
-To clutter up the front page

What does it per today cover that high votes do not already cover?
    -nothing

Do we need HoH in its present form?
    -no

Is the HoH reward too great?
    -Ohmagawd, YES!

Does HoH in its present form pose as SPAM?
    -yes

Could we delete it and replace it with "Honorable Mention" which only applies to posts that are older than 3 months?
-yes, but I lean towards "why haven't we done so already"

Yes, I know I ask some of the same questions that you did, but I do it since I think they had merit!
    -wise, ol' AG!

    Your turn other admins! ;)

What is the purpose of HoH?
To highlight submissions of a higher caliber

What does it per today cover that high votes do not already cover?
A vote is independent of the HoH. There is nothing wrong with giving a moderate scored submission a HoH, while leaving a higher scored sub HoH-less. The HoH can often be a badge of recognition for an innovative idea or a neat form of presentation, or just an all-round cool idea.

Do we need HoH in its present form?
Unfair question, there was no HoH in the old citadel, so no we don't technically need it. The HoH can set subs apart from others, and when I consider the HoHs on my subs, I generally subtract one, and go from there. That means that the majority of my HoHed subs arent counted since most only have 1 HoH.

Is the HoH reward too great?
XP is just a number, and only matters in terms of votes per day, and how many members use all of their votes?

Does HoH in its present form pose as SPAM?
    No

Could we delete it and replace it with "Honorable Mention" which only applies to posts that are older than 3 months?
I don't think that it would be used

    My 2 Cents
This arguement pops up just about every time there is more than three subs in the HoH.

    Hehe. :D

I can only speak for myself, but in this instance I could not identify with this statement. I am being a busy bee making my new home all alright and I do not look too much on the front page.

My opinion is an opinion of the moment, brought into existence by Strolen's words which I found provocative and interesting.
  27. Re: Admin Chatter

I'll write this here since it could be an after-effect of some of our discussions... but who knows.

I have a quite strong feeling that I gave the Golden nomination to the Cohrron Family sub. I can't vote golden on it, so I guess it was so. But it is not displayed as a Golden Nomination. Golden vote, where art thou?
  28. Re: Admin Chatter

    #428
Actually, I remember seeing that in the Nominations when I was cruising through them a few months ago, because I was like, "Well, that's cool."

I will be on a little tonight, but I am going to fake war for the rest of the week. I get to play aggressor and dress up in man-dresses and attack 120+ people that are protecting their "base."  Today I got to do reconaissance training with security forces. Many thorny brambles and it was raining all day. The joy of mud!!!
  30. Re: Admin Chatter

It all sounds fun, except the man-dresses!  :P  Enjoy!

By the way, is anybody else seeing all caps in the comments. I know I tried to make the titles all caps but I think I missed a closing tag and Opera's more strict html standards are catching it. Didn't happen till I upgraded to the new Opera.
  35. Re: Admin Chatter

I had a go of opera a couple weeks back and noticed that the comments were all capitals. In explorer it's not, however.

I will have my first gaming session in half a year this weekend. Yay! Now I only have to force something onto the paper and hope that my lads and ladies like it!

    Yohooo!

    Gaming session!

    Yoooohooooo!

Random thought from the top of my head: This has become my substitute for Call of Captain-thulhu after those dreadful kids T-Bone and Chuckanator ravaged it. ;) Go admin chatter!

I have moved my main computer from the dark dankness of the back room (which my daughter has taken over by the way limiting me to the laptop after 1900 every night which has severly crippled my computer time) to the living room. Although it is not the prettiest living room piece, there is no where else for it to go to allow me time to use it. I have school on top of the extreme need to play at the Citadel so now, hopefully, I will have a bit more time to goof off on it...programming and other.

Problem is that now I have to keep the smaller desk I have clear of clutter in order to avoid the antidirt monster of the 11 hells.

Could you send or display a visual of what you are talking about in these lines to follow, "harnessed nexus requires a mosaic of a square, with a unique pattern..."

MoonHunter, this is more your field ;)

On another note, this one is for you Strolen:
"Awaiting activation" is is available for us admins under "admin"->"members". I notice that no new members have been activated since september 26th. Is this a sound practice?  I realize that it eliminates russian marriage agencies and viagra advertisement, but... does it not limit the growth of this site? Especially when it is not used.

  39. Re: Admin Chatter

    #439
Activation is via email. They activate themselves.

So all those waiting have been sent an email and never followed the activation link.

I go through them every once in awhile and purge them. Some I will simply delete, others (depending on the username and email) I will send a notice that their unactivated account has been removed and they will have register again. All automated by the forum of course. click click

Why do chilled's subs keep appearring in Awaiting Approval as opposed to In Work, just curious.
