This is brilliant! I've seen goblins used in this fashion in several computer games. And I love it!

Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#122good decision to hang on to opinion. Man, these guys are getting tricksy precious. They now leave worthwhile comments along with their "pitch". They are starting to figure out what makes us tick. :p

Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#123Okay, but with this one from Low Sorcery I am really not sure if it is a meaningful comment or something else. Anyone has the complete literary background?

#125And another. Ok, I guess this is the new strategy. Leave a fawning message and attach stupid link.

#126Easier to turf them then perhaps
-
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#127You gotta love the broken HTML linking here... those poor spammers are trying to create valid links, which due to our favorite bug immediately lose the link part itself. The final result is a link leading nowhere, or more precisely, to the submission where it was created. :D
Still had to delete them, but you have to appreciate it when bugs increase the security of your website!

#128CP replied to another spammer, so I left the comment, deleted the link.
Am i the only one getting annoyed at BH's new "strategy"? At first, deleting links, leaving comments seemed to make sense to me, but now, i find the whole thing annoying. Do we even really want these comments?
Nice story! I wonder the feeling of your hair being torn apart.Oh my that really hurts!

Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#129If the comment adds value, perhaps, but I am leaning towards summary execution myself.
-
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#130There is a way that we can stop this sort of annoyance. If we require registration to comment, in effect, silencing the barbarian horde, no more comments like this.
I have a couple of accounts in other forums and it is pretty standard fare, no registration, no commenting. It's not like there is a charge, or credit card information exchanged. My wife is on a forum where it is $15 a year for that privelage, and that site has more members than we do. -

Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#146Some work to be done here:
http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=1103
Putting it here into the public eye, since some user comments need to be deleted as well, for which we have an extra layer of carefulness.
Special thanks to Chaosmark, who identified several of the compliment-backhanded-by-spam-link perpetrators. They are gone. -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#148Runescape goyy comment - needs to be deleted
As for the bizzare exchange in Arron and Cinthra, it too needs to be swept under the rug -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#149Honestly, the real question is, why waste time analyzing and trying to find something worth-while in inane BH comments? :P
As someone who has spent 3 years (next week) deleting stupid BH comments, consistently, i cannot stress enough what a waste of everyone's time this exercise truly is.
I think we are all on board at this point, for BH's banishment (see Strolens post on subject) in the next version of site.
Let them register, its effin' free!
99.9% of BH's comments are meaningless stupidity. The other .01% will join eventually. -

Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#151Deleted.
Me, I'm not so completely against the Horde, I'll miss the random outbursts and occasional gems. But if that is the will of the masses, I accept it. -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#152Had a little chat on it, and really, there's little defense for most of them suckers, especially if I'd just argue about the number of useful comments, which, however welcome, is very small.
What is more important to me, is the message that it sends out - that we are an open place, much more than others. People can get a hint of the community of their own. If they say something worthwhile, we tend to praise it, the bad stuff tends to vanish quickly (which is also a message in itself).
Got to think about that CAPTCHA... that could at least kill the occasional spambot. -

#154Huh? What happened? How?
(And yes, accounts can be disabled, not sure at the moment how, but it can be done. The first step is usually a warning PM though; few spammers come back anyway.) -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#155So what is new? I hear of some annoying spamming.
Also, found one here: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=4052#70079, but I feel inclined to keep it there after the replies. :) -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#156I think that in responding to the spammers and flamers in such a manner, gratifying as it may be, makes us look a little less mature. Imagine the new potential user (the one who's sensibilities might be put of by having to sign up to comment) sees this exchange. Rather than keeping the spam swept up and out of sight like so much dust and debris, the site members engage anyone who leaves some mincing little comment. That's not very mature.
Personally I think it looks messy, and it should be deleted. -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#157I think it's sensible to not cater to sensibilities of people too overly, but this one can be deleted.
One of my half-rules for comments, which straddle the line, is to leave them in the open for three days. Those who notice it have a chance to respond, then it will be gone. Just keep a record of it here. -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#158::HINT You know what is even more annoying than random internet-surfers leaving inane comments? Site members posting as BH whenever they are feeling mischievous. ::HINT
K-I-L-L. Kill BH. :P -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#159(Hint: we can always check the IP if there is a suspicion. ;) ) -
Re: Zumba, Lada, Bugi, and other SPAMMING
#160Okay, but this was spamming.
User salesup has posted two advertisements on Canon and Nikon cameras in our forums (anyone interested please head into Deleted Posts, here's one).
conercafeinc@gmail.com, IP 41.219.206.24
After a few seconds of hard considerations was the user deleted. Alas for the cameras, I hear they are quite good.
