Cloak of Irony

The bearer of this cloak believes it makes him invisible to the rest of the world, but the pure irony is that the cloak only makes him more noticable.

After searching for the worst item that still exists on this page I came up with an idea.

The cloak appears to be a normal, brown cloak. No fine cross stitching...a tag with 'Made in China' can be added if wished.

(sorry couldnt let that one pass up)

Magical Properties:

Its the opposite of a cloak of hiding.

There are some spells that are similar to invisibility spells, like ones that just make the eyes of those around you just slide off of you. The people notice you, but think nothing more of it.

When wearing the Cloak everyone within insert distance here of you start to get a ringing in there head as if someones saying 'someone's here, someone's here'. The further away from you they are, the softer the ringing in their head sounds. But the closer they get, the louder the ringing becomes. Making those around you semi-paranoid, sending them into mad hunts looking for whatever is sending off this 6th sense.

For example. Wearing this cloak inside a house while trying to hide would be impossible. Anybody would be able to discover your hiding spot no matter where you were hiding, within minutes.... or seconds. The cloak acts like a HOT or COLD meter...telling the seeker wether they are getting closer or further away from their target.
The cloak also attracts the eyes of others....as if the person with the cloak walked into a room in a NEON YELLOW JUMPSUIT with people wearing white bed sheets.

The funniest part of this is that the person wearing the cloak thinks its a cloak that makes them blend into their surrondings.

This deceptive cloak was created on accident, by a young wizard attempting to craft a cloak that gave him invisible powers. The wizard he said the spell correctly and clearly, but he stammered when saying 'Unvisibliona' for invisible properties. He said 'Un-Unvisibliona' canceling out the 'un' for the invisible part.

*Item only works if cloak is given as a gift, and the new owner is told the cloak has magical qualities that can make him invisible.

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

Hmmm... at first I thought it would be a well-known twist on the notorious cloak of invisibility (makes you think to be invisible), but a more careful reading proved otherwise:

    - it does make its wearer invisible

    - but he also becomes instantly suspicious to people around

    - it may work as intended if the distance is sufficient, though

Of course, the wearer will soon find out there is something wrong about this invisibility. One may blame too loud footsteps or moved items for a time... but not long.

But believe or not, the item can be useful. How about impersonating a ghost? Or becoming a decoy for something else. In worlds where invisibility is (relatively) common, the guards will pursue an invisible person.

I suppose after discovering the fault in the item the wearer could find a way to put it to good use.

Or pass it on to the next unsuspecting.

I'll have to work on polishing that....but everything has a flaw. We shall see how it'll work out.

Interesting. The kind of item a wizard or witch might give to someone that he/she dislikes.

A decent and interesting item. Nice to tease the players a bit, yet still useful. I agree with manfred on the alternative uses. Actually great to give a sleepless nigth to enemy guards!

    On the whole I concur

I like the idea that I as created by accident - OK not really original (most GMs use it sooner or later), but a good standby (neatly avoids the "wizard who just likes to be nasty" motive, which I never really bought in to anyway)

I also like that I only works if the wearer believes he has a cloak of invisibility (kind of like a combined delusion and limited mind control effect) - adds an interesting limitation

I wonder - once the owner learns the fault does it stop working? - after all, he no longer believes he has a cloak of invisibility - not sure about this, probably depends on how magic works in your world

Nice idea and well thought out - 4/5

    {to dragonlord}

If the cloak is given out as a practical joke...then yes, the whole cloak would stop working.Although if the person that recieved the cloak passes it on to another person, telling them that the cloak has invisiblity powers, then the cloak would work again.
