The two assassins followed, their swords trailing bright red silk streamers. The blades cut through the air leaving trails of smoke and light in their wake. The hero avoided the blows, bending as the reed in the storm, spinning like a top on a table. No sword in hand he was unprepared, but he found a pole, and a blue banner fluttered from it. THe fabric made a rich crackling noise as he swung the pole under his arm, hand extended.

"To be ready to face death is less honorable than being ready to face life." The Hero said, lunging with the blue draped pole, knocking away several sowrd strikes and gashing the blue silk banner. The assassins fell back, for the Hero was the man who had won duels without a swords before and now he was again armed. The first feinted, but caught the base of the pole in his gut while his comrade sought a flanking strike but had his sword instead struck from his hand.

The two assassins retreated and bowed to the hero, for his skill was the greater.

    from a dream last night...

The woman sat at her table amongst her travelling companions, She looked at the man over her tankard as she drank. The tavern was growing louder but the sounds of the bard could not be drown out. He sat upon the makeshift stage, his fingers plucking the strings of a battered guitar. The rythem slow but the notes quick. his fingers barely moved and yet the notes flowed from the instrument. The patrons suddenly grew quiet as if entranced by the music and perhaps they were... She awoke as if from a dream or a daze. Looking down at her feet she realized that she had just thrown half of her gold into the bard's guitar case. Startled she looked around confused and others looked the same. By the time she had regain her wits the man had layed a kiss upon her cheek and was out the door, guitar accross his back, lugging a heavy case with him.
She drew her sword and others drew their own weapons and chased the bard into the night. He laughed as he climbed upon his waiting horse as he had done many times before. He had escaped with his life but had found himself a worthy rival and she snarled at his diminishing shadow for some day they will meet again...
