Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#201Yeah, that was a rough comment. Got to see it in my email. Wow.
So did he really leave for good?
I was surprised by his reaction thinking it was a well thought out, positive post that could help. I learned more about how great he is and missed the part on how that would help your average newbie....
Seems to be we lose the professional authors more than our favorite GMs. Guess they think they can roll in and own the place and are surprised when we are not impressed. -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#202Silveressa: mine was just a generalised rant, no need to defend your actions :D
You keep doin' yo thang!
Also, I missed Aramax's Sub :( I never get to see the juicy drama! Damned time zones! -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#203He'll probably be back. He's done this once or four times in the past.
Here, Se, just for you...now learn from your mistakes!! :P
New Here? Learn from my mistakes!

My trek on becoming a true Strolonite
My trek began in 2008 when I made my first foray here. Look at my original welcome to me. It is titled 'Say hello and remember my name!' Positively DRIPPING with arrogance. You have no idea how that sentence makes me cringe now.I had been running my D&D game for 27 years and I was full of myself. Don't get me wrong, I deserve a little, I mean how many DMs can say the same thing? But "Remember my name? Please. So without reading any of the 'how to' stuff or even that many submissions,I wrote my first piece.
Ok so I think my first effort was the Tooky Bird. Now I know from play, I have used this idea many times and its a golden little side encounter. But how does that translate here. Poorly. I was given plenty of advice and suggestions, but once again that arrogance pops up its ugly head. Who are these people to tell me how and what is a great idea? Have they been running a game for 27 years? Do they have my experience in real life at the table? Probably not, but there is a way of doing things here that really and truly makes it very, very special.
I look back at those early posts and once again I cringe. Nobody is going to come away from my early sub's and correctly think "That's the way to do things!"
So with my ego firmly in hand, I walked away.
I cycled time and time again, submitting great ideas in poor fashion. Once again saying I would never again darken these halls because they could not perceive my magnificence. Really? Get a grip!
I am a great player, I've got 50 awards in my game space from conventions that say so, I'm a better DM, I've kept a game group together for 34 years now, with a few original players, BUT I AM A MEDIOCRE STROLLENATTI! From many years of play I know a lot of you think like I do, check your ego at the door. Give this place a chance, we need you as much as you need this fantastic font of ideas. I truely look forward to your ideas, but don't look to me for sub advice,I'm still an infant.

Yeah, that was a rough comment. Got to see it in my email. Wow.
In her defense she did ask Val, Muro and me if it was permissible first before she posted it...
I think she found his ongoing ego trip/self deprecation grating and had her fill of it, which I can't really fault her for.
So did he really leave for good? I was surprised by his reaction thinking it was a well thought out, positive post that could help. I learned more about how great he is and missed the part on how that would help your average newbie....
Not to sound like a bitch, but he's come and gone before this, (I remember a post of his joining back in 2k8 and somehow he forgot he even joined us when he rejoined a few months ago? ao he doesn't impress me as the swiftest arrow in the quiver so to speak. :pirate11:
Seems to be we lose the professional authors more than our favorite GMs. Guess they think they can roll in and own the place and are surprised when we are not impressed.
I more see it as we lose those with over sized egos that can't handle us not falling to our knees and acting like lubed up fan boi's/gyrls everytime they make a post and "grace us" with their talent/wisdom. Quality is in the content, not in them pointing at every post of theirs like a cave man who just invented fire screaming "OoooK! OooK! Look what Thag do!" Until they get the amount of recognition and head pats they think they deserve. :wizard: -

Where are MY lubed up fan gyrls?!?! -

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#209Um, yesterday I said something chat - that I had said be brave - comment and vote. I had not expected him to figuratively run naked around the front lawn with random stuff scrawled on his cheast.
And now we get a sub like this - http://strolen.com/viewing/MMWWW_Goddess_of_Milk#0
Um. Is this some attempt at site vandalism, another outburst from someone who may have dubious sanity, or just him having 'fun'.
At least there is no insults or profanity :)

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#210There is some bizarre spark of satire genius in that sub lol -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#211I think he's tryig to say that we are sheep (cows) worshipping a false idol lmao -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#212It's some kind of juvenile attempt at mocking Strolens I think (The Stolen world?) Or he's trying to bait Lady Wolf who called his last ego sub crap and hoping she'll do the same on that one so he can play victim? *shrugs*
I woudl swear he was drunk and or stoned when he wrote that regardless lol. -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#213I am ambivalent towards this. (By the way, I only care about this quote bwlow itself, not any precursors that ended in the quote)
axlerowes has a point, somewhere, but it is fare from a complete picture.
I LOVE the long "dense" posts. I love them. They are awesome.
But hey, I love the short ones too. The ephemeralstability shorts was what pulled me in, back in 2003-2004, and I still love them.
True, some of our members are wont to vote 2 and write "poop" on a short sub. At the very least, it never gets more than a 4.
Why is that?
Perhaps people feel that they have EARNED more than a 4 when they write a long, esoteric essay. I certainly feel that way, though in retrospect I identify that feeling as logically flawed.
We don't get paid, other than the virtual pats on the shoulder by our fellow Strolenites.
But we need, we desperately need to accept, to embrace the short formats too.
Divide submissions into 2: shorties and longies. If it is more than 300 words, it is a longie, and categorized as a longie, it gets the longie icon when the sub is listed or on the main page.
Likewise with the shorties.
Thus we tell our members: There are two classes of subs, and both are equal in the eyes of the Llama Llord.
Or the Llama could create strolenshort.com, where only subs of less than 301 words are accepted ;)
Are we really bullies? He's a bit of a pot calling the kettle black methinks.
[quote author=axlerowes link=topic=7180.msg86988#msg86988 date=1422287412]
This bring up several questions. What is the Citadel's purpose? I think it was designed as place for gamers that couldn't meet in person to share ideas and thoughts about gaming.
How did the Citadel become this repository for esoteric and self-indulgent writings guarded by bullies that seek to uphold this contrived and inaccessible form?
Part of this esoteric form may be found in the Citadel's content biases. Some of the arguments used for keeping out things like in-game stats may not hold water. It was said (by Moonhunter and others) that in game stats make things in accessible, and certainly Stats alone do, but why haven't we included the stats in addition to other ideas? Why did the masters of the Citadel, feel the need to separate ideas into different categories?
Is there a culture of content and presentation bias of on the Citadel? Certainly when Aramax says "have your own way of doing things" he has identified such a bias.
Should the Citadel be more accessible and supportive? Why did Splatterbox recently post and then leave?
Why do people like Aramax and Moonlake find the long form content on the Citadel inaccessible?
Here are my thoughts:
I wonder if this expectation of attention for things on the internet that differs from things read in hand or total in person. I speculate that when we click on something on the internet we are expecting an immediate presentation of information and thus are turned off or befuddled by long 'dense' text. In your case (Aramax) I wonder if you have the same aversion to prose when reading fiction in other formats?
I think there is a different motivation for the consumer of RPG fiction than traditional fiction. The consumers of RPG fiction look more to use the fiction as a platform for their own ideas rather than reading the fiction with an interest in its own internal narrative or personality. Look no farther then the voting guidelines that are defined by usefulness than evidence for this argument.
Finally, I have a question. Has the bar been continually raised on content of the citadel by the people that have been here for years? Has this on going back and forth with the chronic posters made the sight inaccessible to new comers?

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#214Same feeling here!
I sat here, with my popcorn, stuffing myself with the delicious salty popped pieces of corn, and... where the fuck is that thing?
I WANT DRAMA!
Silveressa: mine was just a generalised rant, no need to defend your actions :D
You keep doin' yo thang!
Also, I missed Aramax's Sub :( I never get to see the juicy drama! Damned time zones!

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#215Hahahaha
The Stolen world, where he calls you all cows and dimwitted farmers.
Psssh, he is just venting.
Actually, analyzing the sub is pretty straightforward. It is satire, kind of fun, but it shines through that he pictures himself of superior intelligence (in contrast to the Strolenites he is mocking).
Translation:
Waa waaah, you offended me, so I ridicule thee!
Bow before my superior intellect!
We need more like this. It was popcorn class fun.
On a serious note:
Aramax and axlerowes were two of the US Strolenites who logged out last yesterday. My wager is that their emotions have been ruffled, and they are monitoring the site for posts by their nemesis.
For these two, the conflict is very real.
Um, yesterday I said something chat - that I had said be brave - comment and vote. I had not expected him to figuratively run naked around the front lawn with random stuff scrawled on his cheast.
And now we get a sub like this - http://strolen.com/viewing/MMWWW_Goddess_of_Milk#0

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#216The only issue I have with subs under 500-1000 words is they often fail to present an idea well enough for me to readily use it in my games and I'm left with a "This was a nice start..." type of feeling and never really know if I should reflect that feeling of insufficient info in my comments so often wind up not commenting/voting at all on it.
Really people should be encouraged to write subs that are as long as they need to be, trying to cram a cool NPC or adventure concept into 300 words is going to sacrifice the content that makes it cool I think, and trying to pad out a simple idea (like bucky batteries) into something 1000 or so words would be equally pointless, but I don't see an easy way to get the point of presenting ideas matter more than caring about word count without coming across as some kind of elitist twit. -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#217I could easily conceive of excellent items with a 300 word count. Easily.
I could also easily conceive of an excellent plot or setting with 40.000 words. Easily.
The shift to long subs happened somewhere around 2005, and people reacted to it. Split in two camps.
I know most of you feel like the elite, the creme de la creme, but you are really only superbly talented people, in a world filled with other people.
Some of them are even as superbly talented as you.
That is why I love being here. Lots of folks with lots of talents, and some are much better at many things than I will ever be.
You all inspire me.
But... Short posts NEED to be embraced.
They need to come back. -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#218What does axle have to do with anything? Lol. He is not miffed at anyone and is probably the Epitome of a strolenite, aside from an occasional "wtf!?" kind of comment. More amazing content per month than 10 Strolenites put together, and is one the few commenters who gives a s**t. Leave axle alone. He has nothing to do with Aramax' idiocy. :)

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#219Heh, i just pumped out 3 short subs. Winning the lead balloon award so far. Maybe too specialized? -

#226Fuck this thread.
There shouldn't be anything worth responding to in here. Just stupid bullshit to be totally ignored...Now there is unbullshit to a point and THAT is bullshit. -

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#234I wasn't gonna bother posting this on here after sending it to Muro, but it was fun to share.
Pm to Muro:
@!#$ing Mundoda! What a champ!
You know what I am tired of on this site. It's not something worthy of an Admin rage thread discussion, but I'll vent it to you :p
I'm weary of people take s**t so seriously! From EVERY side of all the arguments. As an example: Lonfspeak and Lady Wolf were having a whinge about you being a douche at one of their friends in a sub comment.
Other examples I tire of:
"What's the correct way to vote?!"
"Should we allow stats?"
"What makes a good sub good?"
"Are the newbies being treated fairly?"
"We need to get fresh blood in the site!"
JESUS F-UCKING T-WAT-LICKING CHRIST! STOP J-ERKING YOUR OWN C-OCKS BY ACTING LIKE YOURE ALL SO GOD d**nED IMPORTANT!
Who decided that these people were so muthafukking central and vital to this site that they simply MUST share their opinions on how the @!#$ing thing is supposed to be run?! Do you see any of the older generation making these posts? The ones that actually MIGHT be deemed important? Nope.
The site is how it is. Sometimes it would be nice for it to change, but you know what is needed for that change to happen? All the old members have to go. All the great contributors and wiseman of the citadel will have to disappear because you know what? We are set in our ways because our way works. It may not be perfect. It may not make it the most popular site in the world. But to those quality individuals to whom we cater for, it matters SO MUCH more than being popular.
Here is what the Strolen Citadel number 1 rule should be:
1) GET. OVER. IT.
- if you have been insulted. If you have had a sub go poorly and get a low vote. If you are clashing with other members of the site. If you think the site could be run better, differently, more effectively. If you wish the site was more like x, y, z, please kindly prise your fingers from the massive, veinous phallus on your forehead and refer now to rule 1.
In fact, I personally believe this rule should be posted in the Stolenite only thread, so newbies can't see it, but those who have been here a while can. Actually, To become Promoted as a blue-named Strolenite, I think you have to have proven that you follow this rule.
Hm.
I do believe I have rambled. I might go ahead and get a drink then refer to rule 1. Peace out, Muro hope you enjoy this read when you wake hah!

Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#237It is the nature of game masters, Shadoweagle. They are mini kings of their mini kingdoms, and they are used to having their way.
But all you say is true.
Back in the day, Strolen introduced the law of the hammer. I don't remember what it was anymore, but I reimagine it as a forceful admin, that stamps your "fucking get over it" comment on every post that whines.
Fucking get over it already.
It only takes two or three comments of that kind, and people would get the picture. :) -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#238I vaguely remember that law. A shame that in today's PC wipe-my-arse-for-me society, the children would leave once you swung that hammer :p
-
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#239You think?
What about the children that leave because of the neverending site politics? -
Re: The backyard of admin fury!
#240True that. I vote for the hammer to be unlocked from the chest under Strolen's bed. :p
Now. Enough of this coherent banter. This is the wrong thread!
