I was about to get excited that for once I got a Freetext Friday submission done and then I realized that I was still on the first page. No wonder Execution seemed familiar. Dammit.

Saw the latest freetext and did a quick "name" brainstorm. I hope to get one of them done. Here is my list of ideas, feel free to use, mix, and pervert them all you want.

    Slug Lord's Jewel

    Focus Crystals

    Gem of the Sea

    Reaper's Heart Ruby

    The 66 Opals of Burden

    Stone of The Impossible

    Liquid Emerald

    Diamond of Devouring

    The Arcane Facet

    Immortal's Sapphire

    Grey Gem of the Beyonder

    Ever-Shifting Polyhedron

Going to be gone for a while tonight, hopefully I can pick one and start it up on Monday. Good freetext!

I semi-officialized this thread in the main Citadel. Dragonlordmax was knighted with 500XP for starting and maintaining this thread for as long as it has been going. Been watching the response to it and I love it!!

I don't intend to take anything away from this thread and so not positive how to implement it but I wanted to be able to reward those that take the challenge. So, currently, the freetext challenge is in effect and authors will get a magic 25xp extra for using the freetext in their submissions. Depending on how you want to work it, we can put the announcement on the frontpage or leave it a forum thing. Up to you. Also, right now I have to manually edit the database to get it in there, which isn't a big deal short term. Will eventually get it so only Dragonlordmax can update it from the Strolenati page but that will be low on my list. For now I will monitor this thread and update it as soon as I am able. Usually takes a day or two to get a post for it anyway so shouldn't hurt.

Thanks to Dragonlordmax for starting this thread and continuing it! Thank you!

    Three cheers for DLM!

And I got one done! I got one done!

And then I went and added freetexts to my older stuff, yay freetext!

Found some wiki links that might be useful for others considering the freetext:

Let me start by saying thank you for the congratulations. I'd like to thank the Academy....

No seriously, congratulations, Scras, on the Gems of the Underworld, and on my part let it never be said that I turned down some experience points (now if I could just come up with the two submissions I need to level up...). Also, Pieh, I love the name Liquid Emerald, though I have no idea what one would do with it.

Anyway, it's Friday again, and that means a new Freetext. This week, it's going to by glyph. So far, only Kassil has a post under that freetext (and it's from seven years ago - did we even have freetexts back then?), but I think it's a good one that could cover a lot of ground - tattoos, words of power, magic spells, hieroglyphs - all sorts of stuff.

Hmm, I appear to have missed Friday, so here's one a bit late: cup. So far there's only one, and it Needs Advice, but I think there's plenty of room for growth here. Think of the Holy Grail, the, uhh. Ok, that's the only famous cup I can think of, but really, I think that there's a lot you can do with cups. How about those cups with ice in the side? That totally could have been an entry.

September 19th is still a ways off, but we can always use more scurvy plunderers, so this week's Freetext is Pirate! Arrr!

Also, Muro, you can think of this as another chance to get on that parrot-sage. Parrot-sage-pirate? Do you dare? Or, you know, anything else having to do with pirates is cool, too.
  11. Re: Freetext Friday

Missed another Friday, it appears, but here's one just a little late:

Planet. You know, like Tatooine, Mote Prime, Barsoom. There's all kinds of ways to make crazy planets.
  12. Re: Freetext Friday

    #52
    Do we count planetoids?
  13. Re: Freetext Friday

    #53
Really, I think that pretty much anything in the "vaguely-habitable celestial bodies" category is probably good enough.

My general rule of thumb is, "If you were running a game, and you were looking for a planet (for whatever reason), the submission should be useful to you." We're not astronomers, here (well, I'm not, anyway).

They are probably the most evil people known to man. Completely and utterly without mercy, existing only to destroy the lives of those arbitrarily chosen to be subjected to their malice. Nazis? Pfeh. Clowns? Who cares? I'm talking about the cheerleader.

Sure, sure, some fiction has portrayed cheerleaders as being "not that bad," or even likeable, but we all know that this is a lie. Or not, really, it's up to you, because that's this week's freetext.

    Go Wildcats!

Updated in database for extra XP!
  18. Re: Freetext Friday

It's still Friday! And on that note, howzabout time for out next freetext. That's a pretty broad one: it can encapsulate chronomancy, time travel, and clocks all in one. And I'm sure that there are other things that can fit in there, too. So go for it!
  19. Re: Freetext Friday

    Updated!
  20. Re: Freetext Friday

I posted a Time Zombie.  It might be lame, I'm not sure, yet.  But it does fit the chronomancy theme.  Is there anything to do for Freetext Friday or did I totally misunderstand the prompt?

Also, time travel is silly.  At least, backwards.  Forwards is okay.

To the contrary, time travel backwards opens up all sorts of interesting thoughts and possibilities. To the future, much less so (unless you happen to be a predestination kinda guy).

    I dunno. . . paradoxes. . .

    Don't get me wrong.

Paradoxes are just as silly as Non-Euclidean architecture and all the spells that would easily make perpetual motion machines.  And of course, being silly doesn't stop any of those things from being awesome.

You may have overlooked something. We have a means of sorting submissions known as "freetext" (which there is a field for when creating a submission, it should be near the bottom with the categories). Freetext Friday is an encouragement to build up underused freetexts. It looks like you didn't put the "Time" freetext on your submission, but you can edit that at any time (and will need to for the bonus xp).

    Hope that helps.

As an aside, we used this one many moons ago as well. I remember it fondly and it is fitting that it should return.

I was always a fan of the stable time loop, myself. Extremely hard to pull off, especially at the gaming table. But if you can, expect it to be told in stories for years to come.

Posted a stub titled Keeper of the Hourglass. While it doesn't explicitly say in the rules, I thought this challenge is to create more subs based on "underused' freetexts rather than just to boost up some of the less popular free-texts. Anyway, just want to say I don't particularly care whether I get bonus XP for it or not. This is an idea that poped into my head due to the announcement of time as the theme freetext and I've taken it as far as I can go with it. I don't think I have energy to take it further even with comments so I didn't even bother to put it in Advice Requested.

@Pieh:  Ah, got it.  Thank you.

@Chaosmark: Yeah, stable time loops are a holy grail.  I want one!

Not entirely. My intention with Freetext Friday was mostly to try to provide some degree of inspiration. Personally, I think it's easier to come up with something interesting from even a single word than to do it from nothing. I try to go for a variety of freetexts.

Also, I know that I owe a handful of comments; I'll get to it, I promise!

Anyways, it's time for a new freetext. This is another one that I think deserves to be more used than it is, given its popularity, but which is rather sparse around these parts: amazon. Warrior women. Valkyries. Whatever you want to call them.

I've been meaning to participate in this since the beginning but never quite made it, so I decided that I will start doing a freetext soup from previous fridays.

In that vein, I present The Glyph of Tarnos Krae, using pirate, glyph, and time.

Let's do sword this week. Swords-in-stones, Joyeaux, Durandal, light sabers, etc.

Swords are pretty much the ultimate expression of typical fantasy. Go for it.

Sorry for the late update on this one, was out of country on the beaches of Cyprus. Yes, I had to location drop, it was great trip....even with Syria shooting down stuff.

You know what I'm feeling. Snakes. Sneaky, poisonous, slithery things. I think that snake would be a great freetext. It can do anything from snake dragons through Eden myths and staves that turn into the things.
  34. Re: Freetext Friday

    #74
    A snake. A snake. Aaaaahhhhhhhh it's a snake.
  35. Re: Freetext Friday

I know this is mostly to inspire new subs, but I'm going to use the opportunity to update one of my old subs with the snake freetext (call me lazy, if you will, but I prefer "sleep deprived").  Either way, the freetext is getting expanded.  :)  I therefore present The Staff of Seven Snakes, with no expectation that you need to comment on it, Dragonlord.

use double brackets to surround sub titles in the forum to make the autolink....one of those forum issues that I can't get around.

Next up, let's do Church. From glittering spires and domes to small local parishes, a church can be a big part of a setting. Claim sanctuary, get blessed or healed, cry out to an uncaring god... all sorts of good stuff happens in these places!

Due to the creation of Freetext Friday and the due diligence in keeping it going non-stop since it's inception (which takes some serious dedication!!) I have bestowed on Dragonlordmax the "Guardian of the Citadel" Award!

It is well earned. Thank you for what you have done for the Citadel!!

I haven't really got any idea what that means, but thank you nonetheless. It certainly sounds nice. And it is Friday now, isn't it, so here's a new Freetext for y'all:

Pulp. Yes, that's right, give me your Nazi-punchin', idol-swipin', two-fisted, wing-walkin' stuff. Bonus points for apes and/or monkeys.
