It is like Global Warming. All smoke and mirrors with no scientific backing.

This year marks the coldest December on record for the greater Knoxville area
Last Winter saw two records set, longest span of temperatures below zero, and longest span of night time temperatures below zero, 12 days and 19 days respectively
This Winter I measured and photographed a 32 inch long icicle. I plan on stabbing Al Gore in his heart with it

I hope you are joking.  They have rain in Nunavit right now.  In January.

No joke, we have been setting record lows and periods below freezing this Winter and last year. I can attest to the accuracy of these claims as I was unfortunate enough to be working in an unheated building for all of last Winter. They are much more kind this year and have allowed me to stay inside the main building with glorious heat.

I just hope you were joking that because it is getting colder in some parts that refutes global warming. :)
Here in New Brunswick, we are getting warmer and warmer winters, which is really strange given the snow that the US has been getting.

I think they should change it from Global Warming to Global Climate Disruption.
  7. Re: Admin Chatter

    #967
It is simple. Because there is still winter, global warming is a farce. Pretty simple deduction. If it is cold....it isn't warm. DUH. I should travel the country with a slideshow and make millions!

Once it is Hawaii all year, I will perhaps concede there is a chance global warming *might* have some validity.

regarding the nightly update to allow HOH/votes to reset, could you post instructions on how someone, like myself or other administrators, might be able to do this?

  9. Re: Admin Chatter

    #969
Yeah, I was slow on that. Actually gave it to Silveressa last night. She has been very consistent keeping me honest in PMs and in the threads so made that a quick fix.

GOOD NEWS. I signed a lease today! Should be in the house with internet and electricity by 20 Jan!!! Game On!
  10. Re: Admin Chatter

I hugged my desktop computer for a few minutes today after they delivered it. It has been so long! Tomorrow I get the rest of the furniture and crap. Still in the dark cold until next week when I get all the utilities and internet going though so there is a lot of stuff to look at but I can't use it. :(

Hey Strolen, how do you like the region of Italy you are staying in? I've been south of Sicily (Malta), and in Venice and Trieste (Far northeast), but never where you are.

    Nice?
  12. Re: Admin Chatter

    Oh, and CONGRATS!
  13. Re: Admin Chatter

    #973
internet and electricity??!! They spoil you rotten over there!

kidding aside, congrats on getting settled! Game on!
  14. Re: Admin Chatter

    #974
The region is insane cool. Granted I wasn't up by Venice when I was able to travel all over. Did Venice for a weekend and actually went to Zagreb the stayed local to Aviano AFB most of the time. But there are a ton of awesome historical villages within an hour of us. Town where Pinnochio was written is sweet, Lucca is an entirely walled city, Florence and Pisa of course, mountains where Michelangelo got his marble and a crap load of other small historical towns. I think all of Europe is frick'n awesome so would love anything I am sure but this seems so much easier to go on a ton of day trips. Plus there are the miles of awesome beaches right nearby too. Loving it!!

Also right next to the airport. Tell me the closest one where you are....loving Ryan Air!
  15. Re: Admin Chatter

    #975
Closest RyanAir enabled airports are Torp (TRF) and Rygge (RYG). TRF is decidedly closest, but RyanAir is shifting its base of operations from TRF to RYG. Both airports see traffic though.

TRF is 15 minutes away, RYG is 3 hrs away.

"You've been scarcer than a virgin at a hooker convention"

HAHAHAHAHA, genius. Never heard that phrase before, but I must say, I DO LIKE IT!

Oh, and hi manfred, you lurker you.

The Moons are coming! Hide the cheese!

We have Moonlake, that wonderful purveyor of fantasy textiles and fabrics.
We have Moonbeard, who has adequately jumped into the fray with an adequate item.
We have MysticMoon, from the wilds of northern california, harbinger of savage messiahs and player of flutes.

We even have MoonHunter peeking in again.

Oh noes! I feel the lycanthropy kicking in!
  23. Re: Admin Chatter

Not sure who has the appropriate settings but I think most everybody in here.

The annoying vote/highlight refresh that is based on a cron job. For some reason the cron seems to mysteriously fail. It is set up from the server to run nightly and nothing has changed so I have no idea why or how it has issues suddenly. That is a complete mystery to me. There are a couple updates that need to be run but, realistically, it should break if I run the updates not the other way around.

Anyway, that extreme annoyance aside I have added a direct link to the reset php page in the Strolenati menu on the main page. On the right menu you should see it now.

Don't worry too much about double resets or any of that. Worse case is the highlight changes early and people get a little extra XP.

Just got back from another trip last night. Going on a day trip with the family today to Assisi today and next week I will be in Germany for 3 days. Sucks but fun being this busy but it sure as hell ain't helping the Muro Awards. :( Will do what I can tomorrow on that but have 2 weeks of homework to catch up to, will get some stuff done though!!!
  24. Re: Admin Chatter

I am also swamped with life at the moment..(i knew the good times of being on daily and nightly wouldn't last for long :))

  25. Re: Admin Chatter

    #985
What is going on with Mourn removing his stuff?
  26. Re: Admin Chatter

    #986
I shot him a polite text asking.

Hopefully he is getting published, anything else is unthinkable.
  27. Re: Admin Chatter

    #987
I missed the hub-bub but honestly, it sounds like Mourn is depressed.

But c'mon...leaving and hiding subs? Taking my ball and going home?

I agree %100 however that comments mentioning point-docking for spelling, punctuation, and grammar, are RIDICULOUS. The idea is what matters. Feel Mourn's pain there.

RGTraynor's "Future of Site" (Future of Site? really?) thread on the other hand, amounts to whiny whine. At least Mourn's is from the heart. RG's rant basically boils down to, "No, no, pesky peasants, I have been paid to write for Steven Jackson games! I am not mortal. When I "gift" the site with one of my subs, it is not open to critique. How dare you people!? All I ask is that you merely bask in my presence."

Silly. I read over all of Echo's comments on RG's subs, and I don't see anything inflammatory or overly critical or insulting. Call me crazy, but RG sounds like he's used to adulation only.

Emotions get the best of all of us sometimes. This too shall pass. I have consulted with Torn-Rope, the Multiplyer of Unwit and the Bunny Prophet, and they predict...

    1. Mourn's subs will be back, as will Mourn.
    2. RGTraynor and EchoMirage will become the best of buds.
    3. The 2012 movie starring John Cusack will suck!1!

Yep, I see you're familiar with GURPS. Echo. That, as well as some non-standard spells I've created that similarly manipulate time in various ways without creating major headaches for the GM.

You know what would be awesome?

    As a GMing resource:
Describing how a PC might perceive those mysterious spells. The usual spell description in sourcebooks is dry, and some GMs have trouble properly portraying them.

A proper portrayal of their mysterious powers goes a long way to add to the myth of a powerful wizardly order.

As an up-side, it may be less system-specific.

The Lohites, Lohim or how one might call them short, might be turning this up a notch, to convey a stronger sense of superiority and enigma.

    > Teleporting so that they take whomever they visit by surprise, yet appear as if they had always been there, just unnoticed...
    > Timeslipping for dramatic effect: you blow up their tower, but the Lohite walks out, just brushing off his robe with a slightly annoyed look, pretending to have endured the whole cataclysm, while he simply was not there...
    >While they may Time-Port after copious calculations in cases of dire need, they may consciously spread rumors how anyone going against them will vanish, as they ported back and prevented his conception for example...
    >With the Communication Spells, the rumor may go that they are constantly in telepathic contact, even though it's not feasible under unaltered GURPS rules...

    etc.

Methinks that Animation is sort of out of character for them - Summoning fits guys who regularly cross time and space better.

Mourn issue close to being solved. Light at end of tunnel.

(23:32:29) Murometz: Mourn, man-up and put your subs back out where they belong and deserve to be...the main page
(23:33:10) Mourngrymn: Im putting news ones up... shush
(23:33:21) Murometz: stop this silliness...theres always 1-2 whose comment one will find retarded/infuriating/etc....but we persevere...because we all know your stuff is good. Period.
    (23:33:23) Mourngrymn: starting fresh
(23:33:34) Pieh: better than my stuff
(23:33:55) Mourngrymn: nah Im starting to not really like a lot of my old stuff. Some of it I really enjoyed but a lot of it was just meh.
(23:34:20) Murometz: stop the whiny-whine..dont equate tough times in life with having fun with your "friends" online writing about an dposting the coolest stuff EVAR...
    (23:34:39) Murometz: fantasy rocks
(23:34:49) Mourngrymn: lol I have to stop playing WoW to do taht
    (23:34:51) Mourngrymn: er that

WoW rocks. Wish I had time for it.

I gave Mourn access to the admin forums so he could take a look at some old threads. :)

It is like the wheel of time here sometimes:

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.”

    http://www.geekology.co.za/blog/2010/01/first-wheel-of-time-movie-possibly-released-in-2011/  ??

I hope they don't churn them out for the quick buck. Fantasy movies are starting to get crappy again since LoTR...although that is a hard bar to reach...

If 3 is true, the rest will be too.

Oh, yes, 3 is most definitely true.  I have since punched 3 people in the face that said they liked the special effects of 2012 and would watch it again.
  33. Re: Admin Chatter

OK. So would you all get pissed if I totally got rid of the Advice requested and In Work public?

My finger is on the trigger but it requires some force to pull....

It would take a little effort. I would put some notices on the pages and such, all currents would be changed to in work private by automagic. Would sacrifice some ideas to the thread gods to get started and would need some participation for the next bit to get it started but I think it will work...

Also going to put up some wording on the votes to strongly imply the need for voting on the "idea" vs. the packaging. Have to be succinct with it though, not a lot of room to explain.
  34. Re: Admin Chatter

    #994
I'd prefer if you replaced it before removing, rather then remove and replace.

As for votes, I am not in agreement.  I Like a cool, nicely done, detailed sub that someone has taken the time to craft well.  I reserve my 5's for them.

Perhaps a flag like at Deviant Art where you can put Critique Requested on a submission, and so the gloves are off for voting.  Otherwise, you can read the sub, give it a thumbs up and carry on without feeling like a schmuck for a lame comment :)
  35. Re: Admin Chatter

In-works. I have sooooooo many of them. :)

I have always found them to be fun. Some advice requested get a love of love after all and I have often been inspired by someone's ideas and/or suggestions on some of my half-started or half-finished nonsense. Many other in-works have led to nifty collaborations over the years as well, once 2-3 people pounce on the idea. I likewise enjoy seeing other's in-works and commenting merrily on them, and seeing what eventually beomes of them.

The flip side of the coin of course is what you mention, Strolen. They languish for years, most are ignored (especially advice requested ones, which i find bizarre), and the majority of public in-works remain public in-works, 4EVAR.

So i guess I vote, do it! Lets do away with them and see what happens. As I understand it, the exisitng in-works will either become private or transferred to the forums as the same thing really...unfinished ideas, looking for love/comments/questions/advice. This will have the simultaneous effect of boosting the forums, and help usher in the  days of yore, when forums got heavy traffic with ideas.

I'm not seeing a downside and will volunteer my "participation" for the "participation phase" you mention.

I think we have a little rejuvenation going on. Great seeing all the comments...yes, even the ones on the original Citadel building submissions of which this entire site is built upon. (I have to give them some credit somewhere, they are crap :)

Any issues with inviting Silveressa in as an admin? Will make a main forum post about it, but remember how long ago it was that the cron job broke...well Silveressa has pretty much been reloading that bastard every night since it all started. I only got it fixed about a week or so ago! How is that for awesomeness and dependibility. Will make her a cool icon for the forum, a title I think I decided on as "Guardian of the Citadel" and she is happy to help with anything else. Figured it would be appropriate to invite her in after her single-handedly keeping the updates going.

valadaar, not ignoring you suggestions on the voting...just pretending I didn't see them.  ;)  Have no real comment on them. It it continues or the issue reappears then it will be worth a longer discussion. This current issue seems to have nicely petered out and I am impressed with all the comments that have been going on lately! Still waiting on time to work on all the other things I want to do.

    On my short list

    -HoH and Golden Pages
-Ajax comment/vote updates (I want that BAD!)
-Get the wiki post perfected so I can forget about it
-the cross link posts don't seem to be working. When you put links in your sub they should be automatically added to right column of the other posts to show that they are linked to.
-Comments to be moved to ideas by the submission author. I know I am too chicken to throw ideas on a submission but if we are able to put them in a comment and the author likes them, he can boost it up into his submission. Still thinking that one through but I sort of like the idea.
--Bigger ones. Give Regions some more love and get that sponsored submission thing another whack in the ass! (sub 1503 example)

Oh, also figured out how to track a few streaks.
Logged on X days in a row.
Commented X days in a row.
Voted x days in a row.

And whatever else we can come up with. Extra XP for milestones and all that.
