Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#121Finally remembered this little annoyance, while browsing the merrily growing scrolls:
'New' scroll entries or scroll comments cannot be at all distinguished from older ones. So coming upon a _long_ scroll with a recent comment(s), you will have no idea which one is the one.
Edit: since we have dropped the dates from the scrolls long ago for a slicker interface, perhaps a different colour may be used for 'new' entries, like it is with regular comments?

Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#122Also with scrolls. If you comment on a particular scroll in a submission, you can't go down and comment/vote on the submission itself right away, you've gotta go back and click on the submission's name. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#123Well, after replying to a comment, the user stays in the reply mode.
Also, I had to curse those refreshing cache headers again... pushed the wrong button, and deleted a comment instead of editing it! Perhaps, at least until that matter is solved, we ought to move the buttons even more apart for those that don't look where they are clicking? -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#124The last one for today: I've noticed that the spellchecker acts kinda funny around our beloved 'special characters'. Not that I would be suprised, or demanded a fix, but it made me think of this:
Could we hack the spellchecker into fixing the special characters of ours? Adding a button that will correct the chars or their combinations that we know of - then you could save it or continue with ordinary spellchecking. -

Add a link to the forum profile from the main site profile, and vice-versa.
OK... now, that the forum profile is linked on the top of the page, I have a diffilcuty accessing my main site profile. :)
Clicking on your name in Users Online produces a list of my subs, and only through them I can get to my main site profile. From the forum's profile leads no way out either. -

#126If you click on your name "manfred", it will go to the main site profile.
If you click on "Forum Profile" it will go to, well, the forum profile.

#127D'oh! *Homer Simpson self-shock*
It is true. It works. Weeeeeee!
(Oh, and it would be still nice for the two profiles to be linked, but it is a minor as they work nicely.) -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#128Question: what happens to posts, that are updated, including an Update comment? Where are they shown, if at all?
My idea is that they should be visible somewhere, since a commented update should be a significant change that people may want to see, comment on, change votes, etc.
Done. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#129I believe the recent comment is updated so they can pop back on the front page for that. (Pretty sure) Then they are in the Since Last and Recent Comments list.
There is a link on the right to view the most recent 20.
Yeah, I think that is about it.
(all the other suggestions are duly noted as well. just looking for coding time) -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#130Wow, I am discovering whole new parts of the Citadel I haven't noticed before! Recent comments... Last 20 Updated... don't remember them in New Since Last Visit, but maybe they are in.
---
OH, and while we're at re-discovering: Pariah has discovered that we have here netbooks somewhere. :)
http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,424.msg48166.html#msg48166
I wonder where a link to them is... also, do we have any resources yet from the older Citadel that are buried somewhere? -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#131http://www.strolen.com/netbooks/
Nope, no link...that I know of. There might be other stuff. Up to hearty web adventurers to find it. ;) -

[quote author=manfred link=topic=2731.msg46870#msg46870 date=1157037662]Now, strange: can't add this submission http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2828 to the Books compendium. I keep being said "Take another look, this one has already been associated", but can't find it. Is it just my imperfect eyes, or is it really not there?
Now explain me this: I am unable to link 30 Curses to the Curses scroll, but I was able to do it the other way around! Getting the same message as last time, too.
Uh?
Going to have to find another example. Couldn't find anything obvious and then when I went to test it, it slapped right in without a problem...???
Maybe I have found it, or at least something similar:
If you use the link to a Suggested Submission, or a Link Back, you get something like this: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=59&from=40
- Node X from Y. When you are on a page with this address, you cannot link Y to X, getting the message of already being associated. Once you visit the X page with a normal link, however, you can link Y without problems.
As for the case from before, I don't know which link it was, maybe there was even something left in the cookie. At any rate, I suggest to explore the code that checks if a sub can be linked to another - guess it checks something that it shouldn't. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#133The "from" was an abondoned tracker to make soft links (links through browsing vs actually linking them on purpose) which probably has a function hiding, like you say, making that happen.
As why it affects the linking, it really shouldn't have anything to do with it. It is just a floating variable without a purpose and is never called. Not sure how that would screw it up but there might be something else in that code that messes with the actual node variable somewhere. I am certain you got me closer manfred!!!!! -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#134Broken link on Scholar's Canvas. The "Link to more tips for better posts" comes up as a 404. I checked and it's just because it links to rpgcitadel.com instead of strolen.com.
fixed

I tried the code for a new color. Tell me what happens with a new scroll entry. ;) -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#137It looks new! In other words, it has a different, yet Citadel-compatible colour that makes it stand out in a definitively desired way.
Yee-haa! Or something like that. :) -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#138- When someone adds to a scroll, their profile is not updated. This happened here: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2938 . Notice how demagogue has no submissions, yet he contributed to sparK!'s scroll... Shouldn't that be recorded somewhere?
Added Scroll count
Modified Comment count to only count true comments -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#139-I create adventure modules, not plots! I love aforementioned modules. However, they create a dangerous trend: When I release said module it is hard for other plots to compete. A plot is a brief sketch, while an adventure module is... the whole nine yards! So, in the name of all that is fair: Should we differentiate between plots and adventure modules on the main site?
A plot is still a story arc regardless of the size.
The secondary category should be taking care of this:
Campaign Far reaching, fully fleshed out, multiple levels of storylines, locations, npcs and encounters all wrapped up in an organized fashion. Non-Linear. Requirements will most likely drive a new game.
Encounter Small, but interesting interaction that doesn't take a lot of time and does not cause any deviation from current game events. QUick game entertainment.
Mini-Campaign Many game requirements using specific events and or locations to drive a large complex storyline. Linear and non-linear. A large long reaching set of events that can still be used in current game, but also might drive a new game.
Multi-Storyline A plot that is starting to get more complex with many things coming together and overlapping. Still doesn't have too many specific requirements so that it can still be used easily. Linear or non-linear. More complex set of game events but still useable in current game.
Side-Quest Another small, but interesting, diversion that may take the players some time, but will inevitably return them back to the current game events. Small game diversion.
Single-Storyline Fully contained, solid plot that has story driving content with a set beginning and end. Doesn't require to many specific things remaining easy to put in anywhere. Linear in nature. Solid, simple event for current game.
Your module would probably be a Campaign or mini-campaign...no? -

It works still well, but thanks to the unwanted global activation of the Fall template, I noticed that the new scrolls do not stand out anymore - a question of colour obviously. :) -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#141I just noticed this. On the forum, there's no longer the set of navigation links at the bottom of the page. You know, the ones that go Strolen's Citadel > Sub section > Board > Thread. It's up at the top of the forum content, but not at the bottom. Is this a result of going to the fall theme? I'm pretty sure it was there yesterday.

#142Question. What's with the missing image dealy in the stats section of our forum posts? Between our titles and our avatars.

Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#143Put this one among the admin tools, to be made eventually: convert comment to scroll (or vice versa).
Fresh example: 1167#21264
Edit: I've tried the above code in the searchbox, and it wasn't recognized as part of the Citadel. Searchbox to be expanded someday.
Go, polish, go!
Strolen:There is not a way to use search to go directly to the comment since the #1111 portion is for link identification for the browser to interpret and the search is all server driven and not passed through the url. Because of this it won't work like we would hope and expect. I did make it so that if you used a comment link like that it will simply take you to the main post but won't help you find the comment...unfortunately. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread

Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#147Discovered this one by dumb mistake:
It is possible to suggest a submission to itself. I guess it shouldn't be. :)

Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#148Quest error - Remember how our first quest grabbed EVERYTHING that was an item. Well this quest has gone the other way, at least for Moon's new sub. I'm pretty sure that it qualifies, but it didn't get that fancy little red 'quest' text.
There seems to keep on being small problems popping up with the quests, and the only thing that I can see that wouldn't be 100%, but also would allow us to do quests around ideas that cover more than 1 area, like the sky for instance, would be to have a check box in the scholar's canvas that you check if it is a quest sub. Like what we have for translating BBcode. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#149Noticed in the Bard submission, there is a problem with creating a http link (outside of the Citadel).
Somewhere along the path, quotes are added to the link in the anchor tag. So, if there are no quotes, it will produce a normal link with quotes. But if there _are_ quotes already, another ones will be added - breaking the resulting link.
So depending on how the link is posted, it may work, or may not. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#150Quest bug. It's not taking entries, for some reason. I know the category is right, but it's not marking them as quest entries.
*Edit*: Well, it's taken a few entries, but not Chaosmark's, I don't know why. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#151Hopefully the Quest submission bug that doesn't recognize quest submissions is fixed now.
Removed the ability to suggest the same submission as the submission that it was being suggested on.
Fixed an admin Quest inputting bug.
Main site "Who's online" link now goes to the profile instead of their list of posts. -

This one was definately a bug, but all the other "problems" are expected and since we know about them we can look for them. I see your point with the checkbox, but the few times we do have a quest that goes outside the realm it is not a big deal to try and catch the ones that don't fit as we did before. If this bug didn't pop up there has only been one quest so far that issues have arisen. There are procedures in place that all the admins can use that makes it very simple to remove a submission for those that don't fit the requirements of code. The fact that the admins are on so often allows the submission to be found relatively quickly and removed if it doesn't fit. If you had the checkbox then it would pretty much be there all the time, on every post, with or without a quest. I forsee that causing many more problems than the current system, don't you? Either people not checking the box (which admins can't fix, I have to at the moment) or others checking it at innappropriate times thinking that maye they can enter it into an old quest or something.
I do see that it would be nice to have a more reliable system, but for what it is I think it does an effective enough job. The occassional oddities can be quickly resolved and the system does most of the work so we don't have to heavily rely on everybody understanding even more about how to post on the site. Happy to hear of other (or more) thoughts on it though as I am always wanting to improve they system. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#153I didn't think about it like that, but then that's what we're (not) paying you for. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#154Would be nice to have it working for everything running smoothly. Guess you should do a little review of the whole code someday when you have enough time, and see what's causing the problems. Piling fixes upon fixes does not always make the best product (I know that from my job in case you're wondering :p ).
But until then, we can deal with it.
---
I have submitted a book again, and noticed that I've got 5 XP for it. Little care, but isn't it a bit too much for a short scroll comment? More than for most submissions if I remember correctly. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#155It is not that there is still an error in the code (though another always may might pop up) and it is not working right, it is doing all I ask it to do. All a software product is is bug fixes once you have what you would consider a stable version. Bugs are a huge constant in software and something we must always deal with because you will never get the code perfect, as you probably well know too. So I am not worried about fixes on top of fixes (many may call these tweaks or polish, except Microsoft, since I don't like them I still call those bugs :) ) because that is the nature of programming. Fixes on top of fixes, in my estimation, is getting you closer and closer to your bug free product...not sure how you mean fixing things is a bad thing, especially in software. If you are fixing a chair with duct tape then it will probably fall apart again, but when you fix a bug in software, you are fixing the actual material the chair was made out of so it will hold and, if it doesn't, it usually is another part that breaks. Once you find all the breaks, though, you have a solid software chair.
I am trying not to be defensive about the quest code as there is always a better way to do it, but I just don't see that the quest code ever being as creative or as configurable as our imagination. Keep in mind the original purpose of the quest too. It might not be the sole intention now, but the quest idea was spawned to target categories that needed some attention and the code does that just fine.
Right now the quest can be setup by either selecting one major category (NPCs, Items...etc) and anything that is submitted under those is tagged as a quest or you can select any subcategory and anything submitted under that subcategory will become part of the quest. The admins just need to click on a link to remove it if a submission is added and it shouldn't have been.
Is that perfect? Heck no. Does it get the job done? So far, although I do see a point where it might be useful allow multiple subcategories. Will that fix everything? Hell no, there will always be some kind of quest that will need a little finger magick by the admins.
Shards of the Storm for instance, how would I have code read each submission to ensure it is a shard submission?
-Use freetext you might say, ok, but now you have an extra level that the user has to take care of which our regulars may do, but others probably won't. If you forget to add it then should I allow you to edit the quest freetext in after the fact? Then I will have to check date submitted, then I will have to check if it has been in work to ensure old quests aren't added to a new quest but will still have to allow the in work submissions to be added to it, and, and.... Even if I do all that, it is far from fool proof. Either way, quest subs should be tagged by the quest code and freetext should be used to tag in in other ways so I don't like using freetext for this anyway.
-Use a checkbox. I don't like that because of previous argument.
-Have multiple quest submission categories: Yep, may eventually do this and it might get us a little closer to what you want but you still have to review every submission anyway because if you have this kind of quest then there is going to be another more creative quest requirement besides being a "sword" or a "knife" or whatever. Shards allowed any item as long as it used a shard, and I am not going to put together some complex search algorithm for that which will still not be able to perfectly pick each correct quest submission.
So far, the code that it currently used has been perfectly adequate for what we are doing. The only thing it can't do now is go across major categories. You can't have a NPC and an ITEM in the same quest. Not sure that is a bad thing really, but it does slightly constrict the quests. Would it be nice? maybe. Is it really necessary? no, I think there are plenty of quest ideas that can be creative and fit into the current constraints.
The quest code will never be perfect, just like any software, just don't want to go too far in coding obscure things that will only be used in a small percentage of quests. Much rather depend on myself or the admins removing a quest (or adding one) is infinitely easier and more reliable.
Not shutting the ideas down, but the code is doing what I ask it do right now. If you think it needs to do more than I will need you to explain to me better what you think it could do.
(I tried not to rant on this one so forgive the tone if it needs to be. Working on very little sleep at the moment and I have been running into much trouble with the links I have been working on)
--------------
Comments/Scrolls get progressive XP based on their size.
Scrolls get an automatic + 3 for being a scroll.
5 is good mojo for adding actual content to a submission when you won't get any more XP for it, unlike a submission where you get the XP for votes. So 5 is the maximum you will get for a scroll posting and the minimum is 4. You will lose 6 if it is deleted though. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#156On the quest thing, I feel the need to point out that I would still read through all of the entries anyway, no matter *what* the code does. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread
#157As reminded again in http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=429, the first comments and scroll comments do not contain the +/- XP thingy. -
Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread

#160Uh... why is there no entry field or post button for shout box on forum main page?
