Not that I'm picking on CP.  It's not his fault that he can inexplisible defy half a dozen lines of code.

Hey, somebody should start taking care of all those holes, or we will sink! :)

    ---

Now, strange: can't add this submission http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2828 to the Books compendium. I keep being said "Take another look, this one has already been associated", but can't find it. Is it just my imperfect eyes, or is it really not there?
  3. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #83
Okay, Siren no Orakio just added a lifeform to the quest, but when I click the "One of a kind" label on the "quest announcement plaque", It says "Not one submission, oh man!". Bug!

    strolen says:
--Glad you popped that up here, would have been screwed up for the weekend.

The bug is during the inputting of the quest, it doesn't catch the quest author's id so the quest doesn't show up correctly in all the areas. Thanks!

    Quick Links...

    Firefox - Doesn't work
    Internet Explorer - Does work
AOL (DIE, DIE, DIE!!!) - Does work

And you're using Opera, right Strolen?

Searched a little: we have the Anchor set up this way: a name="#17020"
But the specification says it should be without that cross.

Funny way, it works fine if you try http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=2829##17020 :)

Got to get rid of that # !
  5. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

Another quest sub without quest status:
    http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=3054

He had tagged it as Flora, but added the tag "quest" as freetext. The tree was unique, so I changed its status to unique to reflect its quest status, but it did not change and voila, I found the bug.

The bug: When something is submitted as non-quest, but latter changed to quest status, it doesn't receive that status.
  6. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #86
I don't know how much of a bug this is but on my profile page, my submission The Celestial Hypothesis is listed as a Golden submission, but it only has a single Golden Nomination. Where as my other sub, Markus the Black IS a gold submission and is not listed.
  7. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #87
They are correctly listed in Golden Subs or Nominations, so it is a profile-only thing. Similarly to my profile, it features only one submission, while there are more Golden or Nominated for the user.

    Yep, it's a bug.
  8. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

The bug: When something is submitted as non-quest, but latter changed to quest status, it doesn't receive that status.

Yes, sort of a bug. It will only catch a quest if inputted as a quest at the time of submitting. I don't think I want to change this as somebody can then take an older submission, change it to a quest submission, and recycle an old submission. That is not a huge deal really, but the purpose of the quest is to get new stuff. So the few that are incorrectly categorized when the submit it during quest time are better off being hand corrected vs. automating that system and opening it up to possible abuse.

I will fix this one once I get home. Limited internet and time, still in New Mexico.

    Profile bug noted too!

Now explain me this: I am unable to link 30 Curses to the Curses scroll, but I was able to do it the other way around! Getting the same message as last time, too.

    Uh?

oh yeah, and the awesomeness of the puke smiley doesnt work in the main chat or flash chat. Instead we get :p uke
  11. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #91
That curses thing might have to do with it being a scroll. Will have to look at that.

The puke smiley isn't loaded in either of the other chats. Should be able to fix the main site chat pretty easy when I get to fixing some of these other things. Flash chat might not happen too soon though.

    Thanks for reporting them!!
  12. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

Also, pages on the main site keep re-loading when you revisit them (go back in the browser). This is set by HTTP headers of the server. It is very annoying in some cases.

    "Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0"

Hard one to decide what to do.

    Problem 1: Chat
    Problem 2: Random Submissions

If you are not logged in then the pages are cached for 900 seconds by default.
When you are logged in the cache is turned off by default.

One of the main problems is that the cache script I am using (jpcache) is serverside to limit dynamic creation for nonlogged in bots/visitors. This is the biggest hit obviously. For people logged in I have it turned off and it is probably sending the headers that force a redownload.

What do you want to happen with that? To force a refresh, it usually takes me two refreshes to actually get a refresh. If that is they way you want it, I can change it all pretty easy. I can set a 5/10/15/x second limit or whatever to feed cached pages before forcing a refresh.

    What do you think?

*scratches head* Ummm... can we just get it the way it was before?
  15. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #95
    Nope.

Bots will eventually tear up the site if every request is dynamically created. This way they get static pages that are cached on the server. I will continue to hunt for a workaround though! Probably is one but still have another week till I am *really* back.

    Attention! Attention!

A great wrong has been committed towards ephemeralstability. His sub "the masque of confusion" was once highly rated (and still is), but lately it fell in popularity. This is because a bug of sorts occurred as Cheka voted and his votes ended up on a double 5. Trying to redeem the error I deleted one of these 5's, but then the average dropped even more (it was 4.91, but was 4.82 after Cheka awarded double 5). Of course it all ended in disaster and poor Ephe was unrightfully ushered into 4.80 land.
  22. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

That was a big bug you found AG! The decimal data type I was storing in stalled at 99.9999 so I had to change it.

Not sure how many more got caught in that?!

edit: yes I do, only a few and they are fixed.
  23. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

I've noticed that in Firefox, any non-alphanumeric character entered in the chatbox or in a sub is preceded by a "/" mark.  It works fine in IE, but Firefox insists on adding the backslash.

Going to have to find another example. Couldn't find anything obvious and then when I went to test it, it slapped right in without a problem...???
  25. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #105
Strolen, the only thing I could think of was that it's because he's not the owner of that submission.  Because it was with my book that we had the problem last time and I had no problems putting the stuff in.
  26. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #106

I mean, for users that are logged in. Bots I care not much for.

Looking at my code, I don't mess with any headers unless you are NOT logged in, then the server-side cache kicks in. Otherwise it is the same as it has always been.

    http://www.sitepoint.com/article/php-anthology-2-5-caching
A typical Web server, such as Apache, uses the time of file modification to correctly inform a Web browser of a requested page's cache status. With dynamic Web pages, the actual PHP script may change only occasionally, while the content it displays, which is perhaps fetched from a database, will change frequently. The Web server has no way of knowing about updates to the database, however, so it doesn't send a last modified date. If the client (browser) has no indication of how long the data is valid, it will take a guess, which usually means it will request the same page again. The Web server will always respond with a fresh version of the page, regardless of whether the data has changed. To avoid this shortcoming, most Web developers use a meta tag or HTTP headers to tell the browser never to use a cached version of the page. However, this negates the Web browser's natural ability to cache Web pages, and involves some serious disadvantages. For example, the content delivered by a dynamic page may change once a day, so there's certainly a benefit to be gained by having the browser cache a page—even if only for twenty four hours.

So the problem goes back to the original thought. Most of the content can change pretty quickly with people online and commenting. Having the cache would cause delays in seeing this stuff, including your own comments and votes.

In the mood of experimentation, I set the logged in cache to 10 seconds. After that a new page will be created but during that 10 seconds you are sort of screwed. Every refresh will give you the same page, but if you are refreshing more than that anyway, you probably refresh too much. I can save you that much time anyway. I may have to look into removing that random submission of the right column since as soon as the 10 seconds is up, there will be a new random, therefore a new page.

If I was to put in the headers to allow caching, then it would be an arbitrary expire date there anyway since the content actually does change every pageload. If I made up an expire or last modified date we would be in the same boat pretty much forcing a time that you would see stale content.

Unless I am missing something, that is how I understand it.

Does anybody use the random links besides me? I use them enough to justify a fight to keep it. What say you?
  27. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #107
I use them when I'm bored, have read at least 3 newer subs, and am awake enough to keep judging.  I like the idea, but you could just cut it down to just one if you want.  After that if anyone wants to keep looking at random stuff they have that one link on the sidebar that says -
    Random

  28. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

Thanks for mentioning that as it caused me to look in another place. Unfortunately the error he is getting drives all the way through that sort of code and is actually an error that the suggestion got rejected from the database input itself. If it works for us, it really should work for him.

I am perplexed. I thought you had it for a little bit Pariah, thanks for taking the time to bring it up!
  29. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #109
Pariah, the random on the right sidebar would be the one that would be sacrificed. I actually don't use the randoms on the frontpage. Decisions....

Is that added in the actual text box or after a preview?
  31. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

Can't vote, along with Murometz on Moon's Wretched Places scrolldex.

Hint: there is one submission linked to that codex, and we have both voted on it.

    BUMP! :)
Still can't vote on a Codex, that has a linked submission where I have already voted.

    ---

Aside, while I'm on a Codex thing: now I know why I had a discomfort with hidden vs shown comments on a Codex. I've opened one, and the comments were hidden - which I take for expected behaviour. I have commented; later I re-visited the Codex to find the comments shown.

So depending on what you have done before, comments that were hidden (collapsed) can be suddenly shown - which can seem as unexpected behaviour. Mystery solved, though this note belongs more into the Polishing thread.

Another bump so it doesn't get too buried.
  32. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #112
Time to re-word my wishes, I guess. Let me compare Before and After to show what I mean:

Before, when I used the Back and Forward buttons of the browser, I came upon the page that was in the browser's cache. It was quick, but nice, I had to re-load the page, or visit new pages to see updates, but that was fine.

After, with each Back and Forward the page was reloaded. That is damn annoying, if you have a slower connection, and plays upon the nerves even with a fast one. Further, if you start writing anything, don't you dare to try anything like that, or you can start anew - a refresh means you will loose everything. (Now, I have had an upgrade of Firefox in-between, so if the situation I was used to Before was only an old browser feature... then  )

So it is mainly a comfort question of mine - a lot depends on how other members see it, I can adapt if this is desired. Some pages, however, should not be refreshed - Scholar's Canvas for instance.

    So?
  33. Re: Official V2.0 Bug Thread

    #113
It might be a server configuration then or something as I have *never* messed with the headers on any of the site pages from v1.0 to this one. The only change there was is the server side cache which (previous to yesterday) was *only* loaded for those that are NOT logged in. For logged in users I have never (until yesterday) did anything that would effect the headers.

So, that is mainly why I am struggling to figure out what changed and fix it somehow. I have to figure out what is sending those headers (which I need active logged in headers and not stuff I can grab off of other websites that sniff the headers. Those webpage services can't simulate logged on. I can compare the difference (if any) and see if it is a server configuration or some kind of default.)
  34. Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread

    #114
I consolidated EVERYTHING into this one thread. The very first post in this thread is my Bug/Polish checklist. I went through this entire thread and the polishing thread (which I locked) and put them all together for one stop shopping.

Please continue to post anything you find (bug or polish) and I will get to it as soon as I can. Chasing great suggestion over a couple threads got to be a bit of a job so putting them together will help me find and act on them in a more timely manner...I hope. If you have any actual ideas that add function the current setup and go beyond polish, please post those ideas in the want list.

    Thanks, you guys are awesome.

-Did a little formatting on the header info.
-Unbolded the dates in the submission.
    -Now allow blockquote in comments.
-Sig on main site should now have formatting working
-Top 20 XP list in right menu

Nickels and dimes will make a dollar....eventually.
  37. Re: V2.1+ Official Bug/Polish Thread

-You can use blockquote, definition list, ordered lists, unordered lists, and tt in comments.
-h2 and h3 have been added (use only in scrolls and submissions, not in comments)
-only font change available is typewriter text

See html help link in right column of main pages for how to use them.

Found a bug, or at least, I assume it to be one, although I don't know if it's on your side or not.  When you create a new poll, there's an option to hide the results until the poll has expired.  Yah, that doesn't work.  Just hides the results until you vote (I think).

EDIT: Okay, apparently I was wrong, and admins or equivalent can see the results, but not normal users.
