The Sleeping Mines of Elathon
The war has returned. But now the enemies of the enemy are no longer dwarfs. Men must stand against the host, and to do so they need weapons. The mines of the dwarfs in the Elathon valley must be re-opened, and their fruits mined.
Aeons ago the dwarfs mined the Elathon Valley in search of seams. The plethora of rusting gear wheels, cranes, overhead pulley systems and tracks running into the coal-black gouges in the rockfaces are a testimony to the fact that they found some. But then with the advent of war, most miners of the Elathon left to serve Gearraindh Dearg* and his hordes. Of course we all know the rest of the story, how the dwarfs were utterly defeated at An Blár Bais, and how their fortresses, mountain-workings and temples to Gobha Mór were abandoned and fell into disrepair.
The war has returned. But now the enemies of the enemy are no longer dwarfs. Men must stand against the host, and to do so they need weapons. The mines of the dwarfs in the Elathon valley must be re-opened, and their fruits mined.
The PCs must get the old rusting, goblin-infested mines back into working order. This will obviously involve shifting rubble and exploring neglected tunnels full of the dangerous, hungry fauna of ages, as well as some 'Myst'esque mechanics puzzles about how to get some of the more complicated machinery working again.

Simple but fun.
A good basic idea that could easily be broadened into a great adventure!
A dungeon with a purpose!!! I think this type of sub would make a good quest, justify the existence of a dungeon.
Strolen, thanks for digging this one out. Long ago, when I was still a young man a I would visit this site to get ideas for my campaigns. I hadn't yet joined, I didn't leave or read comments, I would only grab ideas. This may have been the first thing I read on the site. Indeed my four 5s dungeon is a direct expansion of this idea; an old dwarven mine filled with complex puzzles. This vote is shaded by some personal affections and inflated by nostalgia. I have been looking for this for years, NOW if only I could find the order of twilight again...it is somewhere on the interenet.
