Chainmail of Forgetfulness

Among the more annoying items that has been discovered among the ancient ruins. The 'Chainmail of Forgetfulness' has plagued the minds of heros galore for many years past.

Created during the dark ages as a way for entertainment among the wizards of the time. They had been trying to think of a way to hurt the opposing empire and also create a little bit of fun for themselves to.

One day, at one of the meetings of the wizards, Kuthu, one of the wizards of the 3rd came with an idea of comedic proportions. He proposed that they create a piece of armor that when adorned, would cause a temporary period of Amnesia. It would cause the wearer to forget periods of his/her past, and some new memories to come. If placed well enough it could possibly debilitate the enemies forces.

The idea was taken with great praise.

We love it. Said many of those in attendance. This will allow for great entertainment and a chance to debilitate some of the enemies forces and give us an edge over them.

So with great applause the wizard Kuthus idea was taken to heart and this ancient item was brought to life.

To this day the item is still around, plagueing the worlds heros and civilians alike. Who knows, maybe you will come into contact with this quite annoying piece of equipment. Hope for the best.

Magical Properties:

This item appears to be a normal piece of Chainmail and will appear so even if an attempt to detect magical properties is done.

When adorned by a willing creature the affect of the item will instantly take place. The affect takes place in 3 stages, that will occur over the course of approximately 3 days (pending on the time in which it is adorned).

1st Stage ~ The character will be under the idea that this piece of armor was always in their posession and they have always been wearing it. Any attempt to remove the armor from the character will result in aggression.

2nd Stage ~ The character will then lose the ability to remember most facts about his/her past experiences. (Important or strong memories will remain due to their significance to the character ie. parents, place of birth, home, age, etc.).

3rd Stage ~ The character will have no ability to remember new or incoming memories.

——————————————————————

After these effects have taken place the armor will then disappear from the characters body to an unknown area where it will then plague someone new.

This process will continue untill the armor is destroyed.

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

2/5, but with a better backstory it could be 4/5. Instead of magicly vanishing it could make the wearer forget how to eat and drink.

While true, the backstory could be a lot better, but making them forget how to eat and drink would be getting way too powerful. It is just supposed to bring entertainment that is why it is sent to a new area for someone new to find it. Thank you for the feedback.

Actually, if the backstory were handled a touch better, you could make it into the sort of darkly whimsical item which might show up in Jack Vance's Dying Earth series (where wizards are strange, decadent, and highly whimsical, almost to a fault).

However, I must say that you'll have to do better than that to pull off a Jack Vance.

    2/5.

P.S.- The wizards created it primarily as a joke, but you also say that it was 'to hurt the opposing empire'. What opposing empire? Also, if it was created to hurt this empire, why was only one made? Why not hundreds, which would be seeded through the armories of the enemy army?

Thank you for the feedback CaptainPenguin, I definetely take your comments to heart. I realize that I could have done a lot better, maybe I should actually sit down and think about these things before I write them up. Maybe I'll make some more and hopefully they'll get better.

Why not just fix it up? That's why there's an edit button.

the idea is novel, armor of forgetting, but alot might be lost in the presentation. this could be a good sort of cursed item, especially if the DM is an item tracker who keeps copies of back character sheets from previous games.

Of course Bob, you've always had that armor, look it was on your CS from last month...

How would it be entertaining except by happen-stance? Did the mages also add a scrying enchantment so they could watch the antics of their victims?

I could see this being somewhat useful, but does not seem to be a terribly efficient means to defeat a mass of enemies. Mess up an individual badly without killing him, sure.
