Blaze & Frost Stones

Hall of Honour

1 mark from 1 Strolenati

Bestowed by readers who would defend this scroll.

Stones that have been attuned to the extreme temperatures of deserts or icy wastes. Such stones are quite valuable to adventurers as they can use them in order to preserve or prepare meals, make extreme environments bearable, and use them in clever devices.

Description

Rather expensive, Blaze and Frost Stones are quite rare, being made through a special process that involves months of preparation.

Blazestones and Frost Stones are made from the same milky quartz stone, the only difference being the carefully carved runes on their surfaces. Most buyers are recommended to assign a command word to their stones. Gloves enchanted for handling them are also sold, for extra.

These stones are mostly sold in their home environments, Frost Stones in the cold northern wastes, and Blaze Stones in the blistering southern deserts, but this is up to one's discretion.

Properties

Blaze and Frost Stones radiate extreme heat or cold, in some cases dangerously so. These magical stones can be activated by speaking a command word while being held in one's hand. The stones may be deactivated similarly, using the command word within several feet.

Upon activation the stone is either reasonably cool or warm, but quickly gets very cold or hot.

Uses & Scenarios .

Alchemy - Boiling or cooling alchemical reagents.

Artificial Environments - For people, creatures or objects that have specific environmental preferences

Cooking & Preserving foods - Boiling water, set in a campfire etc..,

Survival in Extreme Environments - Settled on a belt or in a backpack for traveling, settled in a tent or shelter, etc..,

Discounted - Being sold at a discount because of a flaw in the runes or a crack in the stone or some other issue. Doesn't deactivate, set things against it on fire/freezes them, explodes in frost/fire, luke-warm, cool, etc..,

Thanks I'm trying to make objects and tools for something akin to an adventurer's guide to objects and tools you should have on hand.

How do you turn them off? :)

But, yes, a very handy adventurers item.

*Fixed, they can be deactivated now. Must've forgotten that aspect when publishing. But there's a great malfunction possibility to use for a 'Discounted' stone right?

These are fun items and full of peril. Do you imagine them having a radius effect? I know this is magic, but are you thinking the cold stone absorbs heat? How much heat can it absorb? If you drop it into the ocean would you imagine that it just encases itself in ice and floats to the surface or will it continue to absorb heat until the whole ocean, nay the world is frozen?

Anyway, an item that brings up these questions is an interesting item.

The Frost & Blaze stones can have only a limited amount of heat or cold stored away within their mass, a significantly sized stone could have a greater effect on an area, but most (pretty much all of them, really.) Would be roughly fist sized or smaller. The smallest stones would be the size of a pearl and could be used in environmental resistance armors/apparel or weapons/tools for greater effect.

Also, sorry for responding to all of the questions, the frost stones admit only cold into their 'mass' and remain neutral in temperature because of their nature. They do not absorb heats, they simply 'collect' cold in order to later radiate it if activated. The level of cold radiated would not likely freeze ocean water but might do so to small amounts of fresh water. (saltwater freezing at lower temperatures)
