#486Islands of the Great Ocean
A Study of the Many Bodies of Land upon the Separating Seas
By Ptolem the Scholar
Introduction
Many forces have had an impact upon Khoril, but none so much as the water. Though many would dispute it, Khoril is a mainly aqueous world with what little land there is being a true godly gift. The most well known of the many seas and oceans of Khoril is the Great Ocean, a gulf of water which separates the Great Continents of the East from the Crescent Continent of the West. Millennia ago, long before the Divine War and the World Storm, the first people to cross the Great Ocean were the minotaurs. As ridiculous as this may seem, it is indeed true. From the vast plains of the Crescent Continent, the leather and wood boats of the minotaurs sailed to the east. In fact, any sailor worth his or her salt knows that minotaurs make some of the best sailors a captain could wish for. But I digress. From the minotaurs, the men of the East learned of the Crescent Continent, learned that the Great Ocean did not go on forever. However, it was not until the famous adventurer Jeffrey actually crossed it that we knew anything about the Crescent. Later on, the discovery of Shaubrat’s Chain increased our capability to go to the Crescent, but it is still very unexplored. But I digress once again. The fact is, few beings since that first minotaur migration have crossed the Great Ocean and the few that have crossed it have discovered that it is a difficult journey, but not one without respite. Many tiny islands dot the Ocean and our purpose in this book of knowledge is to note and tell about some of the more noteworthy islands. Now, without further interruption, enjoy.
Ptolem the Scholar
Albora
Jungle coated and wild, Albora has few inhabitants. From it’s lush rainforests soar two great peaks of red stone that are often hidden in mist and cloud. Albora is home to a tribe of purple-eyed, yellow-skinned goblins who speak a language unlike any form of Goblin. Alboran goblins exist in small tribes around the island and explorers who have learned their tongue say that they worship a god called “Zuufu who they say resides in the clouds between the twin red peaks of the island.
Aglatho
This icy island is far to north, near the coasts of the Great Glacier Wastes of Halcaraxe. Though it once hosted a sizable population in it’s short period as a base for Norskr sailors, it has since been abandoned to nature. Extensive caverns that whistle musically when the wind blows riddle Aglatho and the lower caverns are home to spectacular formations of ice and crystal.
Akrudy-Ulti
Sailors tell a tale about the island of Akrudy-Ulti. The tale tells of a young Voolazian seaman named Naturu Beosai, who discovered Akrudy-Ulti. They say that when Naturu first saw the glittering obsidian cliffs of the isle, he thought that it was the head of the dragon Typhon. However, his ship could not turn back and he was propelled towards it. He found that it was actually a circular island, ringed by cliffs of obsidian. Within this wall was a thick jungle island with a magnificent black ziggurat at the center. Naturu immediately had his crew begin hacking through the jungle to find the ziggurat, but after days and days of searching it seemed that they were no closer. Finally, when all of Naturu’s men except for his faithful first mate, Oda, had died of heat, disease, or jungle creatures, he found the great ziggurat. Oda, being a superstitious man, refused to enter. So Naturu went alone, and as Oda began to set up camp, he found Naturu’s mangled body at the base of the ziggurat’s steps. Sailors shun Akrudy-Ulti, and anyone who camps any farther into the island’s interior than the beach may find themselves without a crew.
Visitors to the island tell that the ziggurat can still be seen but attempts to reach it are for naught, because there seems to be a sort of bewildering enchantment on the jungles.
Azantryl
Called also the Island of Beasts and the Island of Heat, Azantryl is actually a number of small and large islands that form an archipelago. When the volcanic god Malg spat up Azantryl, he apparently did not think of the islands’ inhabitants for the geography is terrible, with great hills of black basalt and fields of tortured lava frozen in their flows. The heat is unbearable during the day and fresh water is scarce. However, as inhospitable as Azantryl is, there is life. The less jagged territory is covered in yellow and green grass, studded with clumps of tall weeds. Some regions of Azantryl have large stands of trees that are home to clusters of tiny birds. Sea lions and seals cavort in the waters. Birds are everywhere, as are insects. Sometimes, the rocky shore is coated in armies of black marine iguanas, and lizards charge across the stony landscape. There is one bastion of humanoids on Azantryl: A group of merfolk have set up a small trading post and village with above water inns. It is a good, if hot, resting place for those who sail the Great Ocean.
Bataanatab
Bataanatab is a large island in close proximity to the Somerset Isle. It is very mountainous, with quiet forests of blueleaf, oak, and more tropical trees. Bataanatab also houses a very rare thing: An enclave of Thallasians. These remnants the crab-folk have escaped the fall of their great undersea realm and are among some the last of their kind upon Khoril, a sad fact indeed. Despite their immortality, the Thallasians dwindle and become fewer and fewer each year and soon the Bataanatab Enclave will be nothing more than a memory, unless someone can help these forgotten creatures.
Bey-Sulama
The Island of Bey-Sulama is a far southern isle close to Sodan, too close for some. It is a rocky desert isle, with yellow-white sand fields on it’s interior and a total absence of vegetation. However, at the exact center of the island, there is an oddity that draws the occasional adventurer: A great thing of red metal, sticking from the sands, surrounded by the skeletons of ephemeral Atosian sky-ships. Scholars believe that the Atosians were studying the red metal thing, for magical dating, though vague, has made it out to be a great deal older than the shells of the sky-ships. Whatever the thing is, it is quite impregnable to attack, but it still brings in a few brave or insane explorers each year.
Botuka
Botuka is mountainous, rainforest-coated island that is quite close to Albora. It houses a port founded by Rodezian sailors called Puerto del Canatoya. Though the place is little more than a few ramshackle wooden huts around a dock, the island sees swarms of people each year, including pirates, adventurers, and wizards seeking to use Botuka’s mountains to isolate themselves.
Busal-Bilat
A small island of bare rock constantly buffeted by hurricane storms sweeping across the Blood Sea from the Iapetus Ocean, Busal-Bilat is notable only because it houses a temple to the Storm God aspect of the Trickster, Loku. This temple, the Chamber of the Lightning Forking, is little more than a ring of columns on top of the rock that comprises the island, open fully to the hideous weather. It is difficult to get to Busal-Bilat because of the storms; however, the worshippers of Loku are known for their truly fanatical faith.
Bear Standing
An island off the wooded northern coast of the Crescent, Bear Standing is a sacred site to the Opowa, a tribe of humans living in the local woods. It is a wooded isle connected to the coast by a tiny string of rocks and a sandbar, thick with game and other animals and home to the legendary Red Mask. Red Mask is a huge, red-furred bear, much like a dire or cave bear, who has lived since the dawning of human beings. Wise beyond his animal appearance, he is an oracle of the spirits and gods for the Opowa. In fact, Red Mask is a spirit, and the shamans and warriors of the Opowa pray to Red Mask when they are in need of guidance. Red Mask lives at the entrance to a system of caverns that drop deep beneath the water level. In the lower portions, the caverns are flooded with icy water. Unbeknownst to the surface world, except for Red Mask, these underwater passages lead to a great sea in the Cavern World. The only thing keeping back the strange things living in the underground sea is Red Mask.
Druuv
Druuv is a large, mountainous island near to the Sand Continent. It is a barren wasteland, though not so barren as Bey-Sulama. Druuv is home to enigmatic ruins that bear a slight resemblance to the steam towers of some Gnomish cities but far more complicated and advanced. The ruins are constructed of gray-black steel and greenish-gray stone and are marked with strange symbols. So far, no entrances have been found to the structures, which are built in such a way that their bases are sunken into the stone. Only magic could have accomplished this, and indeed, they do radiate an aura of slight magic, but far less than would seem possible. Druuv has little vegetation, and the little that it does have is comprised of sabergrass and deathblade flowers. It has no fauna but for insects and birds.
Dragon’s Seat
Not far from the Breton Islands, the mist-shrouded isle known as Dragon’s Seat thrusts from the sea like a great stone talon. The isle is almost always coated in thick fog and a soft rain, rendering its trails slippery and dangerous. The island is forested thickly and the wilderness is almost undisturbed because of the superstition which surrounds the site. Though people in Breton claim it is named for their dynasty of kings, the pen Dragons, it is in fact an older name than the line and so that claim is mere fancy. The reason for the mystery is that at the tip of the highest cliff of the island, there is a huge stone throne, weathered by the wind and rain, that overlooks the ocean. Many a sign against evil has been made by sailors when talk is made of Dragon’s Seat. The name seems to imply that it was once the home of a dragon, but no records were ever made of such a creature, even in the pre-pen Dragon dynasties.
Eiszort
South of Aglatho, there is a large island that sailors call Eiszort, an island blighted by great glaciers and fields of ice and unnatural cold, even for such a northern island. Eiszort is empty of all life but for one thing, a thing long hidden and chained beneath the island’s mountains: A xixecal. This titan of ice has been locked away for centuries and is responsible for the unnatural winter of the island.
Eregolphur
This island is a scorched, mountainous wasteland, considered a cursed land by sailors. Eregolphur is home to a red dragon, Kraagalansur and his dread dwarf slaves. Kraagalansur is also rumored to have several of the supposedly extinct spider giants in his employ, but if this is so, nobody has ever lived to confirm the tale.
Haatara
Once an island of verdant green forests and farmland, Haatara was ravaged by the wizard Zataront and his undead horde, who plagued the southern lands for years. The island is now forever barren, but a small community of monks dedicated to Aniat have made their home here and dedicated themselves to destroying the remnants of Zataront’s undead armies. -

The Call of Captain-thulhu
#490careful in reahing for your sword. Ill tell you a little story.
There was a man who was tired of people who would show up at his bar, buy one drink, and leave, never to be seen again. This was a pub, meant to be a hovel of conversation and joy. One day, as someone was doing this, he decided to kill the man. He drew his sword and turned around, but the man was already gone. He rushed out of the pub to catch the man up, but tripped over a stool. he landed on his own sword and ran himself through.
The moral: let the people who decide to leave us go. We would probably not like them anyways, and at least they paid for one drink! -
The Call of Captain-thulhu

It is about indianapolis. And Eminem put into a music video some stuff that happened in our town. So we do get some publicity but not all of it is good. -
