A friendly discussion of new members
#1This is just that, a thread to discuss how nice and useful some of the new members are, in a way as to to massage our ego how understanding and supportive we are, and how they will enrich the Citadel. Amen.
---
Since I've been out for some time, I have noticed only the following two:
valadaar seems to be a very hopeful new recruit. He has the ideas, and he writes them well, not posting a lot but always making it interesting. Good catch icall this!
chilled has left quite a few positive comments in the last days. Okay, it wasn't much, but he BUMPed a few oldies, which never hurts.
The guy has a few subs in various unfinished stages, and has been warned by us quite a lot too. But, he seems to be anxious to please us and does minor edits on them when prompted, pity it is so little. Maybe, which would be sad, he has simply no talent. But there seems to be some drive on his part to make his things better, so there is still hope.
Perhaps we should aid him a little more. Hey, he likes MY submissions, he can't be that bad. :D -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#2Yep, valadaar seems to be a positive whirlwind of activity
chilled is a whirlwind of a different sort :P -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#3I feel bad for chilled. I feel our Citadel arrogance has hit him hard. He might be a poor writer, but he sure is trying. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#4LithTheBlade irritates me. He is in love with quite a few munchkin/anime-kiddie cliches, for instance, assassins, Forgotten Realms, katanas, magical abilities... -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#5Yo all. Chilled submissions go straight to the approval required pile on the front page. Only admins can see this and he has no control over it. A sadmins, we must move it to the correct place and the only way they will make a normal submission is if an admin does it. He is flagged because he submits his non finished crap straight to the citadel.
If he fixes this habit you can change this in his profile. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#6Well, this user isn't new, but the thread was fitting for my:
Cheka Man originally voted 2.5 for EchoMirage's "The Kessen Family Blade".
Oh man, he really has no clue at all, has he?
-
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#7Well, if has to be put that way, there was something missing about that item for me, too. Would I vote for it, I would also not vote higher than 3. Possibly also 2.5.
*manfred is in the right mood to vote lower again* -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#8I cannot comprehend that. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#9Wulfhere is good and has been hit hard by Cheka Man Hall of Honours.
-
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#10Chilled hasn't been seen for a while... not sure if he returns.
---
Abock is a new one, that strives to improve his posts, and takes criticism well. He has recieved some good advice from our users (Pariah seems doing a great job at it, btw., I've alredy plus-ed a worthy comment of him), and he follows it. He produces sometimes funny sentences, seems to be quite a writer-type, though.
So don't swamp him with more criticism now. ;) Let's see how he handles the current ones.
(Aside: this one ought to be an NPC. Strolen, could you? Or do we have the power to change the Category?) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#11Yeah Abock!!!
(I need to add that ability for admins. For now though, I have to go into the database to update it. It is updated.) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#12I don't know what to think of Abock. Some of his ideas seem pretty interesting and new, but he puts them out so poorly... At least he takes criticism. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#13And a senior in high school? The future is screwed. At least they take criticism well, might avert WWIII. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#14Hey, I think we were all high school seniors at some point or another... -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#15Wulfhere and valadaar can't be really called new members now. Go them!
In the mean time we have attracted several other 'newbies'. The last to recollect: the Wanderer has adapted pretty well. kamina needed some encouragement, but she seems to be doing pretty good, too. Also like her historical insights. (Speaking of these two, it's kinda nice when you get two posters with one arrival. :) ) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#16We have a new one: Jarons20. I am mentioning him because of a finely formulated advice from Wulfhere. Respect to him I say!
The new member has agreed to expand his first post further, so give him the time. No need to shower him with tons of tips (yet). :) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#17As for Jarons20, he seems to have improved with his latest post, short and interesting.
There is also dark_dragon that hasn't submitted anything yet, but his comments are quite insightful, and always add something to the submission. I like that.
Lastly, Pshaw has made quite an entry with his Bookbinder. Let's see if he produces something more. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#18A letter of welcome... We could have those! I could make a graphic, a diploma of sorts, with the inscription "Authentic Strolenite"... They could get it as they earned their first level! Perhaps a hint of this before that! :D
Do you like that idea? -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#19We could post the link/graphic in their profile. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#20This is a good one.. much better than any graphic or tag or whatever mechanism we can think of:
Jarons20 has become the co-author to the Magic Cigar Challenge, based on his contribution of both large volume and quality.
Can't see this happening very often... but really, isn't it cool? 8) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#21w00t?
You refute my wonderful tags and graphics? :p
*Slaps the wunderkind machina muse in the face with a newly created graphical tag*
No more pie for you!
But, well, Jarons20 seems enthusiastic and alright in his works. Yay for that!
Good going Scras with the co-authorship thingie! -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#22Naaaah. :D
If we have a nice graphical tag, it will be great, I just don't want to end up with people being spammed. A letter of welcome could be a good idea, however.
But the glorious title of 'Authentic Strolenite', whoever of you nuts invented it, really shouldn't be granted at first level already... or any level for that matter. It should be as with hackers - you are one if people consider you one.
So the "real" Authentic Strolenites are the people deserving it - and there is no amount of XP or writing stuff that will make up for it. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#23Agreed.
What about these custom titles bestowed upon leveling:
- Contributor
- Citadel Architect
- Certified Contributor
- One of us: A Citadellian
- Vassal of Strolen
- Imaginative Strolenite
- Ascendant Strolenite
- Journeyman of the Citadel
Hmmm...? -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#24But we already HAVE titles bestowed upon our users - see http://www.strolen.com/level.php#levels
This should be something special that people receive when they break the barriers of obscurity, and turn from some faceless user or visitor to someone that actually adds to the place. Looking at the table, it should be perhaps the third level (or even fourth, that comes with the HoH). With third level and above, you already most of know the people to a degree, their names do look familiar. Above fifth, you know everyone. (I'm consulting the list at the bottom of that page.)
So we need to find the moment when people turn from lurkers to posters, and endow them with something to let them know they are appreciated. I think third level, with four submissions minimum, might be the moment. (Or am I too stringent here?)
Oh, and: let us see that tag! -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#25Beware, dark_dragon is everywhere! :)
(Ummm, did we have any noteworthy newbies recently?) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#26MaidenLady has started a pretty detailed and interesting RP...does that count?
introduced herself, and then posted a looong intro to her game. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#27That counts.
(And if somebody joins the game, it would count even more. :) ) -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#28It looks fairly interesting, I think I'll join. (I have no life...) Maybe it'll last a reasonable amount of time. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#29And there is Corinth among the fresh starters. Posted a nice sci-fi sub and already comments in Advice Requested! Now if that isn't something... -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#30Eclipse, in case he wasn't noticed, is making quite a stir in the Scroll area (and not only there).
I say we should have a party every time a new active member arrives! -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#31DarklingCandle made his first submission, and it seems to okay. Let's see if he brings out more. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#32I've sent a PM to thechocobohunter about his (painfully bad) Chocobo Ring sub. I hope it goes in the right direction, as opposed to making him leave in a huff. I *think* I was gentle about it.
Also, is anyone besides me a bit concerned about the boy's obsession with giant chickens? -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#33Agony is back. You can take it literally or not, but this thread is about other things. :)
He is back. Still a newbie in a way. So what nice things are there to say?
...
He came in 2005, posted the Ravenman, and Arrkrash, which were promptly bashed apart, as they rightfully deserved. There was some nasty talk, but they were seriously bad, with few interesting bits.
Then he returned in 2006, posted Volomain, which actually wasn't horrible. He was asked plenty of questions, but wasn't heard from again.
And now he is here, with a substandard submission again. The good thing is, that he tries to set up some background for the Ravenman. The bad thing is, the questions were only moved to another submission. We shall see if he actually tries to answer them and update it.
So what can I make of this?
Unless this is a deliberate provocation-by-bad-post (which I don't think is likely, given the year-long breaks), this poor soul is actually trying to write something. With all our bashing we have offered him useful advice, and complimented a few of the more imaginative bits. And I guess that must be annoying, so much that he eventually comes back, and tries it again.
I'm not saying to be overly merciful to him, but if it's only one horrible post a year, then it doesn't hurt at all. Plus it makes for a fun challenge, in trying to overcome all the inconsistencies and cliches! :)
---
Note: he is a Flagged user, meaning all the submissions he posts or updates will go into the Awaiting Approval pile. For now is his new sub marked as a normal, please make sure it stays so (at least until we decide what to do with it...). Plus Volomain can stay out in the open. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#34I kinda' like him. I mean, his posts are pretty awful, but there are elements of them that are really unique, very much "wish I had thought of that" moments. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#35In a time when spamming seemed to be on the rise, Harvengure came to post en masse.
Guy started posting avidly, and there seems to be no serious fault in his writing, short as it is sometimes. Has some interesting ideas as well. A hopeful newcomer, let's hope he will stay around. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#36I don't know if this thread is cursed or something, but I start to be superstitious. Seriously, most of the people mentioned here show up on the radar, and then vanish, never to be seen again.
---
chilled made another sub: http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=3269
It is miserable, but I wonder now if it is not actually in the acceptable (though low) range. I feel bad for the guy, so I would like another opinion on this. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#37If we let it out, it will be chewed up. Remind me, is English his primary language? -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#38It won't (well may not) be chewed up if it receives some constructive critique (preferably not generic, but tailored to the submission ;) ). His primary language I do not know. :|
The real question here is the lowest denominator we can tolerate, and the treatment such subs receive. -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#39We have actually several newbies, which is good.
Railus got my attention due to several consecutive comments on Piehs submissions... now, they do have the same IP address, but based on the writing it seems they are in fact two different people.
Just wanted to let it out before their obvious connection starts to get too obvious.
---
An aside on mrcelophane... what is this "Hurt and Heal" game about? It looks like another Cavern of Inane Natter thing, but it may bring some mindless activity into the forum. Anyone has experience with it? -
Re: A friendly discussion of new members
#40Railus and Pieh are roommates, probably why they have the same IP. I think Railus is going to end up being one of Our Kind of People, judging by chat.
Mrcelephane, no clue. Given he posted a challenge for things that would fit in or are inspired by Halo, I suspect it's a computer/video game.
