The King's Issues with Ale...

The King has an issue about the ale that is extremely popular in his nation...

Background

Up until the announcement that the current King was abdicating the throne to live out his finals days in peace unbroken by bureaucracy, Bulgar Strongbrew was happy. Then the king revealed he planned to give the crown to his illegitimate son, Bulgar, and life for the brewmaster was forever changed.

The beginning seemed innocent enough. He met with his numerous advisors, suffered through the coronation as his father retired, tried to enjoy the lavish surroundings, and absolutely did his best to rule kindly and fairly. Things went well, those first few weeks as the kingdom entered a promised new golden age under Bulgar's kind and wise rule.

Then the ale stopped flowing. The last drops of Strongbrew's ale disappeared into the stomachs of the people, and they found (much like those who drink german beer) that what remained for booze in the kingdom was unacceptable.

The royal court turned their noses up at the idea of the king making Ale from within the castle, and he most certainly couldn't leave to his brewery. The populace wasn't placated, and soon riots erupted. The large crowd outside the castle gates screamed endlessly.

"WE WANT ALE. WE WANT ALE."

Player Involvement

This can evolve into multiple small quests:

1: Assuage the angry crowd trying to 'free the king' from the castle.

2: Stop a riot from happening

3: Convince the royal court to allow the king to resume his brewing.

4: The king may hire the adventurers to locate a specific pupil to assume his work.

5: The king may ask the adventurers to move his stills and other equipment.

6: The king may task players with creating his brew and teaching it to others.

A fun little quest here, not every quest has to be world-shattering.

I find the first paragraph a little confusing. I think it could benefit from more detail. If I understand correctly, the famed brewmaster was revealed to be the bastard son of the king. But, by who? His father, the king (and, if so, why did the king abdicate?) Or, his father, the one who raised him (and why would he be taken seriously?)

Aside from that, I like the piece overall. A fun, non-campaign-shattering quest. The kind that I would like to throw at the players just to see how creative they can be in finding a solution. I would probably throw in a rabble-rouser who was going around and telling the commoners that the king was still brewing but the nobles were keeping it all to themselves. 'Cause who wouldn't want to riot if all the good ale was being horded by the rich? :P

Would do well in a lighthearted game. I can imagine some clever solutions involving gnomes and the first mass market brewery. This could lead to other problems such as the supply of rare ingredients.

This is nice - almost feels like a kids made-for-tv type adventure. There certainly is a place for those :)
