This mountain chain was once vast and impenetrable, but had the misfortune to named in the binding spell of a mighty demonic(godly?) being, namely that when the Great Mountains are forgotten, then shall it be free.

The cultists of said demon tried vainly to force all intelligent beings out. Because of the stone, gold and other riches it was found impossible and another route was taken...

Now, thousand years later, the Great Mountains are little more than few hills and vast pasture lands, the cult begins to intensify its illegal activities. Even mountains as they were, could not stand in the way of intensive mining, and covert disintegrating of stone (all magic-users of the cult are now masters of the spell). The cult, rich of all the mining, is slowly redirecting its attention to other things needed to make everybody forget this mountains:

- claiming all locations not yet mined
- finding all resources of information even incidentally mentioning the Great Mountains (already having gigantic archives on this) and slowly disposing of all of them - this means people, too
- promote a new name for this area and make everyone forget the old one

Plots?
- remove obstacle for mining company, like a monster or whatever (Yes, you may well begin your adventure-career working for the Enemy :-)
- get somehow a book/scroll/map/tapissery/ceramics/... for a 'wealthy collector'
- items (mentioning the Mountains) were stolen, get them back, including the worthless ones
- some magical thingy cannot be destroyed and/or moved (mysterious obelisks with map etc.), the heroes are tricked into believing its cursed/evil and must destroy it somehow
- unimportant poor people get harrased/robbed for no apparent reason
- a freak-show has the so-called Last Stone of the Great Mountains, protect them from attacks or steal it

Heroes can naturally be cultists themselves - maybe only a few of them, secretly (evil grin) - working for the Great Freeing ... for any party - good, evil, whatever . It is possible to begin in the cult, then discover the being/god you try to free is actually the wrong alignement.

Hall of Honour

for The Great Mountains

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

Reader talk, questions, and feedback — not scrolls.

I wonder how the cultists handle talk of the upcoming mass suicide? They should realize that all thier efforts to drive any mention of the mountains from thought is making those mountains the center of thier focus and hamstringing any hope of it being forgotten. The only way for them to actually erase it from memory would be to destroy all mention and then kill everyone who knew about it.

Perhaps more than just being mentioned in the binding of a deity, perhaps the mountains ARE the deity. Mining would be next to out of the question, unless the diety did or still can instruct them to aid themselves with the buried riches.

There are magics that make one forget something. Sure they need some kind of a saving throw, but those that are willing to undergo the spell would have an easier time to forget. The cult naturally cannot cast the spell on everyone, it is but a way in the last stages of THE plan.

It might eventually come to a situation, when they know they all have chosen to forget something to free their god. God not coming? Hmmm... the high priest should have some reminder somewhere, just in case.

If the mountains are a deity, we could turn the whole plot on its head. Would mean they want to destroy it. Or, turning on its head once again... They destroy their expected deity with that saving attempts! Head starts to hurt now.

This could easily be the centerpiece of a campaign - there are so many directions this could go.

I think it is interesting that this is more a plot than a location.
