The Double Purse

A boon to theives, this can be used to replace items with duplicates, which means that the shoplifter or the sneak-thief can go about his or her work in safety with little chance of discovery, provided he or she takes care when stealing.

Sir Edmund Verney on the face of it a trusted pillar of the realm, was well known to selected members of the criminal underworld as somebody who would make them all sorts of illegal magical items, for the right price. One of these items was the Double Purse, the size and shape of a large bag. If an item was placed in the purse, it would be duplicated, and the thief could then replace the duplicate before anyone noticed and walk away leaving the duplicate in the stolen item’s place. Another criminal trick was for the thief to put a bag of his or her own money in the purse and then spend the duplicated money instead of the real money.

This duplicated money will last for 24 hours before fading away to nothing, sometimes leading to a totally innocent person being suspected of theft. Larger items will last for several hours before fading away and will be solid until then, giving the thief enough time to escape. The replacement for a magical item stolen in this way will still keep a magical aura and in fact will still have enough magic in it for one use, which then makes it vanish on the spot after being used. Food and drink swapped in this way, if eaten or drunk before vanishing, will fill the stomach or quench the thirst for a short time, before vanishing and leaving the person hungrier or thirstier then before. Clothes, armour or weapons will last until they vanish, which can be dangerous in a battle or highly embarrassing at other times.

One thing that cannot be duplicated is anything living or undead, as the bag cannot give anything life or unlife.

The bag was uncovered when someone tried to use it to steal the Ruby Sceptre and was stolen by an expert thief from the police strong room as it was so useful in the service of crime.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

I think the ability to duplicate magic items even for a short duration is a dangerous and game unbalancing power. I can easily see a group of PCs duplicating magic wands and other items for one-shot combats. Otherwise I like the idea. This could be a common sort of pinch in a higher magical setting

With that add-on about magic items, it is certainly a potent, but very usable piece. Good work.

Very nice; as Scrasamax pointed out, can be a bit dangerous in the hands of PCs. Perhaps limit it to nonmagical items?

Not bad - perhaps when duplicating magic items, the original becomes degraded in some manner, and in the case of items which cannot be degraded, the copy becomes unstable and dangerous. When it expires, it might do so with a boom or other random magical effect.

Hmm, a little short. But given its age. I don't think that matters anymore.

    Well done Cheka.
