The Amulet of Looda Chriss

Hall of Honour

1 mark from 1 Strolenati

Bestowed by readers who would defend this scroll.

An extremely shiny piece of bling, so big and amazing that it inspires anyone who sees it to ask questions about its origins, the bearer, and most anything else they can think of.

Codex introduction

Originally the Amulet of Looda was created for a great bard who wanted a medallion so amazing that his audiences couldn’t help but be stunned. He was so successful as a bard, and inspired such awe and fawning adoration in his friends, fans and patrons that much of his power began to pass on to this amulet. It was passed on to a friend after his death, and this man found that everyone was exceedingly nice to him (even those who might have been his enemies), and wanted nothing more than to ask him all kinds of questions about how amazing he was.

In time, though, his friend began to realize the power of this amulet, and its curse: So amazing was this bard that people are drawn to his essence, instilled in the amulet, and compelled to pry almost endlessly.

Some example questions might include:
Now where’d you get that platinum chain with those diamonds in it?
Who are those girls you were with when you were riding through?
What in the world is in that BAG, what have you got in that BAG?

The basic jist: They are very mundane, irritating questions, the result of fame, notariety and a platinum chain that looks like a midget hanging from your neck.

Magical Properties:

The chain is both slightly magical and slighly cursed: It inspires love and softens harsh reactions to the wearer (even those of enemies such as orcs or beasts), but at the same time creates a troupe of drooling, fawning fans that follow the PC’s around asking them questions (even so far as to go into dungeons or out to sea). On the other hand, these lackies are just that—they are so absorbed with the PC’s fame and notariety that they wont respond to requests such as “Go walk ahead of me” or “Go play with that bugbear.”

The Medallion won’t come off—at least not by normal means. Only an extremely powerful bard with equally crucial rhymes as the great bard of yore can take the amulet from the PC’s. Otherwise, they must go about their labors with it around their necks.

Hall of Honour

for The Amulet of Looda Chriss

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

Not bad, but I'll wait for what others think before I vote.

Hehe... I like it. It's like an amulet of instant stardom. With a good side and a bloody annoying side. I could see a party that's not too concerned with its reputation using their gaggles of fanboys and girls as cannon fodder or trap bait... *wicked plottings*

But then you've got the trouble of never being able to conduct things in private. And of course the annoying small talk. 'OMG! That is teh best sword EVAR!!11!! Where did u get it?!? Tell me tell me tell me! Plz?'

Overall, a nice item. Blingin', yo. xD

PS. The 'Looda Chriss' pun is clever indeed. I had to look twice to see it... *sheepish grinnings*

I'm holding out for the armor of Phiddy Scent.

I thought the procedure was that when you voted you provided constructive criticism. Maybe I was wrong.

Well, first of all, let me say that I kind of enjoy putting references to pop culture into games, but this is a little blatant.

However, I like the sort of rap-star bling idea as a 'magic' item, so while it isn't particularly detailed (you could make the background more extensive and sort of 'attention-grabbing', though I dunno' if this item really warrants that much depth), Ima' give you a...

    3/5.

Remember, 3/5 is not bad, it's pretty average. And get working on that armor of Phiddy Sent! Hasn't he been shot, like, 9 times?

I like modern culture references as well. I mean there is a Starbuck's in Antioch (an Klah shop that serves odd Klah created by a 'stranger' from elsewhere).

This I don't like so much. It is too pop culture. Especially the way it is written up. Using the modern terms of Bling, the questions, and such pull away from the fantasy aspect, fantasy environment that the item would be found in. Now the item is fundementally solid, the write up is what takes away from it. 'The voice' is to modern. It is as jarring as hearing an Elder Elf say, 'Damm. That dude is psycho!'.

Now if you wrote the item up for an Urban Fantasy game (Wryd is Bond, Dreaming Cities, Stalking the Night, Urban Arcana) and shifted the write up some, this item would be 5/5 on target... because it is written in a 'modern' voice and needs a 'modern' context to be very cool.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about Phiddy Sent's background, special powers, or catch phrases to truly do justice to such armor. I was thinking it would involve some play on words (such as Phiddy's Sent or perhaps Phiddy's Scent). But I'll throw the next installment of RPGRapGear to the masses, hopefully they can come up with something.

Glee: I would provide constructive criticism if I thought that there were a reality in which it would make a difference.

It's funny and I think more useful for roleplaying than it first appeared.

Cultures with in a fantasy setting would probably have their own colloqialisms for ostentatious jewelery, making 'the slack-jawed yokels gaped at his bling' or some variant more flavorful than 'the villagers looked at his large platinum amulet set with diamonds.'

Is it true what the druids say, mo' gold pieces, mo' problems?

Another challenge it poses: what of the player-haters?

Maybe it can be removed by that tribe called geas/quest...yo.

Ok, how in the world with a 2.1 vote score did this ever make it to the HOH category?

Unfortunately my sensibilities about this are making me challenge this. And while I realize that the challenge feature is setup to challenge actual submissions, I am more or less challenging the HOH vote as there are dozens of other submisisons by EVERYONE that deserve a HOH and never recieved one.

HOH can be put by anyone who wants to and earned the right to do so. We might not agree, so we can vote down if we like. I don't think this is challenge worthy. Low votes, sure.

I think this sub may not be perfect, but it is good enough not to be buried by bad votes.

I wouldn't quite call this one a rap just yet. Needs more puns,
