Sword of Belwar

The weapon to all appearences will appear to be a +5 sword until in battle when a qualified person swings the suddenly heavily unbalanced sword.

105 xp 7,890 views

The sword was created at great cost by a rich merchants son that wanted to be an adventurer. The weapon was quickly stolen during one of his first nights out on his own and quickly ended this endeavor.

The weapon to all appearences will appear to be a +5 sword until in battle when a qualified person swings the suddenly heavily unbalanced sword.

Magical Properties:

The sword gives a +5 bonus to the user as long as he is not trained/qualified to use that weapon. If he is able to use the weapon then they get a -5 bonus in combat.

Hall of Honour

for Sword of Belwar

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

All the math on this one should be done by the DM. Let the wielder suffer for a little as he rolls a 19, misses, and his thief friend rolls a 17 or something and hits. Isn't messing with players fun?

Imagine how much funnier it would be if they did find out how it worked. 'Sir Gawain, would you do me a favor and strike my head with this club?'

Well, this did not stand the test of time all too well. Back in the day it was cool and great, but times change and so do the ratings. This feels like watching a 70's movie ;)

I think the .5 on it is a little bit to friendly.

I do like the idea of it being easier to use for someone unskilled, but the way it was done and brought up lacks any desireable effect at all.

DId you notice when the book was published? Could it be that the author is Nimblefinder? Just curious

I had a long reply to this and the site crapped out on me. Needless to that I confused two names together.

The Sword of Bedwyr from the Crimson Shadow series and Belwar Dissengulp a companion to Drizzt in the Forgotten Realms novels by R.A. Salvatore.

Lack of history, while not necessary for it being incorporated in game, is the reason of my vote.

I found this amusing - the idea is reasonably complete though relies too much on gamespeak.

Nearly as old as it gets, it could make a good entry on a list of mildly cursed weapons.

AD*D Powergamers with such a sword would simply need not take the specific proficiency for this weapon, though that would be rather unlikely.

This stands the test of time. It's still funny! And fun to unleash on pcs!

For all it's simplicity, I actually think this is great, and could easily be added into a game to confound a player who is getting a little bit too big for his britches. Strolen's thought of having the GM do the rolls and keeping the stats a secret is a great idea!

A sword from 2001... a primitive weapon from a less sophisticated time.
