Mind Bite

(Author: I made myself sit down and write this :P I missed posting items :( ) A dagger which never kills directly certainly seems useless. But there are more ways to kill a person than to stab them.

Every person has a past. And not every persons past is filled with joy. Abandoned at birth, Varinus took to a life on the streets. Up to his late teenage years, he had been met with nothing but scorn and hate, and scraped a living by thieving. It was only by pure luck, that he entered an alley just in time to see a woman in black pressed against a wall by a rich-looking nobleman, a knife against her throat. As it turned out, he had stumbled on an assassination gone wrong. With barely realising what he was doing, he charged the nobleman, weaponless, and knocked him away from the woman. Quick on instincts, the woman leapt over to the nobleman and whipped out a dagger of her own, slashing his throat.

After the scenario, the woman handed Varinus a plain, unadorned dagger in thanks, smiled at him just so, and left.
And Varinus had never felt so loved before. It was the first sign of acceptance he had ever gotten in his seventeen years of life. He kept that dagger slung in his belt through day and night, and never left it anywhere - it was a symbol of love to him. Though he searched every alleyway for the next 2 years for that woman, he did not see her again.

At the age of 19, Varinus was abducted by a wandering necromancer, who saw potential in the child, and all but forced the unwilling teenager to learn the ways of necromancy. No love was shared between master and apprentice, but Varinus's power DID grow. It grew to the stage that his power overweighed his want for love, and he thusly burned every emotion from himself so as not to be distracted by them. The name of Varinus spread throughout the lands as a most cruel and notorious character. His cruelty perhaps part inspired by the world which was so cruel to him. But unbeknownst to the world, the cruel necromancer kept a momento underneath his robes at all times - a plain, unadorned dagger. A trinket of what was to him, love.

As it happened, however, Some twenty years after his start of necromatic study, whilst he was seated in his chamber reading over a scroll, he was visited by someone he knew. The dark-clad woman entered the study, perhaps arrogantly through the door. Though she, too had aged, Varinus remembered her as that same woman in the alleyway. The woman offered that same smile to the necromancer as she walked calmly to him, and leant close. Varinus was at a complete loss of words, and barely felt the feel of cold steel slide casually between his ribs to pierce his cold heart. The woman leant close to his ear and whispered softly, 'Easiest kill, yet.'

As it turns out, the townsfolk had pooled their money to hire an assassin to rid the world of the Rising evil of Varinus.

As the corpse of the necromancer was looted by various grave-robbers, the dagger - once so cherished - was passed around the world, falling into each others hands, becoming lost and found again and again. Those who ever used that dagger on another, however, found that it was far more valuable than what it appeared to be.

Magical Properties:

Throughout contact of, and upon the death of Varinus the Necromancer, the Mind Bite dagger absorbed the essence of what the weapon meant to the necromancer throughout his life. It instilled false emotion to him, manipulating him and ultimately lowering his guard and killing him.

- This dagger CANNOT directly kill someone. Any fatal stab made by this dagger will appear to veer off course, strike bone or only gash. Wounds made by this dagger will heal cleanly and quickly and one can never so much as be crippled by this weapon.

- When this weapon is stabbed by one person into another, a one-way link is established between the two people. Approximately ten minutes after stabbing someone, the attacker is able to feed raw emotion into the mind of that person. Subtle hints in the form of love, hate, jealously, compassion and so forth are able to be passed into the victim. The victim thinks of these thoughts as his own, of course, and rarely suspects anything.

- The longer after the person has been stabbed by this dagger, the more influence the attacker is able to feed into their mind. After approximately one week, one is able to feed actual thought suggestions into another person, instead of simple emotion, and thus more complex problems can be manipulated.

- The effect of this dagger NEVER grows so great that it is able to completely control someone. If a person realises that his feeling of friendship for a person who he hated so much earlier might be an artificial emotion, he might be able to attack that person anyway.

- Any priest or clerical powers are sufficient to cleanse the person of this influence; Provided that person is aware of this infliction enough to ask for aid. The influence cannot be detected externally by 'scanning for magic' or anything of the sort.

- This weapon can be chipped, broken, bent and so forth - it isnt indestructable. Though a broken shard of the blade would perform the same effect as the full blade would.

''
GM: You have been stabbed by the dagger. The wound is small, and is laughable for a warrior of your magnitude - you have gotten worse shaving cuts.

Player: I laugh at the pitiful attack, and swing my mighty sword towards the attacker with the intent to lop his head off his shoulders

GM: The attacker skips back a step, yelping as the tip of the sword clips his nose, causing a small gash. You feel an overwhelming sense of pity course through you. Are you really so cruel as to slay this person? You have now wounded each other equally...
''

This weapon is not magical, because its power isnt derived from an enchantment - it is simply adapting itself to perform the purpose it undertook while in the hands of Varinus.

This weapon is not Cursed, as it does what it is supposed to do without ill-effect to the user.

I think this is a very well-thought out item. It has uses beyond the typical cursed, or 'magical' item as well. I can imagine a plethora of uses in my own games which could use this as a very interesting roleplay hook. Good job, Shadow!

If you have a party who value role-play more than scything down legions of enemies, then this is an excellent tool to establish some more tension, say, a character growing fond of an enemy first through the dagger, but then realizing on his own that the 'villain' is not too bad anyway.. :D

El mucho wow. I find this submission quite interesting, not the least of which is the turn-around assassin. I, for one, never thought the woman was the assassin until she murdered the necromancer. The weapon itself is quite interesting and unique, however, I'm not entirely sure why it gained the properties that it did. I understand how, but not the why. Was the assassin using it to manipulate the necromancer?

Good sub, but it left a few questions in my mind.
