Familiar Elementals

A very brief look at some minor Elemental familiars.

Elemental Familiars:

There is a very low class of Elementals which can serve as basic familiars for young wizards. They are often quirky and fun for a while but usually replaced eventually. Sometimes they can be fed and nurtured long enough to grow into actual elementals, but that is uncommon.

Stonepal – A fist-sized chunk of solid stone. It has a vague likeness of a face naturally formed in its crags. Other than that, a rather unremarkable stone.

The Stonepals are the lowest form of Earth Elementals and barely pass as a form of life. They communicate their desires through grating or cracking noises seemingly at random. Any given noise it makes might mean hunger or danger.

They are favored by Dwarven Wizards as pet rocks and are often misplaced or swapped with another on accident. Luckily they are easy to bond with and it may never be noticed that you have used 3 different Stonepal familiar's in the last week.

Their shared abilities include improved ability to hide amongst rocky areas and a minor ability to communicate with local stones.

Flameling – A flit of fire that can control its ability to burn, but must be kept near a flammable material to be happy.

Flamelings are the lowest form of Fire Elemental and are small, quick, and merry. They communicate through changes in heat and size, with occasional fiery crackling. Heat usually means danger, while increases in size are pleas for attention.

They are favored by fledgling Pyromancers simply for their thematic benefits.

Their shared abilities include improved ability to summon and control fire and slight heat resistance.

Breezer – A light gust of wind that puffs around you, messes up your hair, and occasionally puts out a candle.

Breezers are the lowest form of Air Elemental. They communicate their desires and warnings through focusing jets of air at certain locations with different frequency and force. A series of rapid puffs to the hand may indicate you should draw a weapon, and so on.

They are favored by Ship Mages who use them to learn of wind patterns in the area and for scouting.

Their shared abilities include minor weather predictions and slightly lessened falling damage.

Wet One – A splash of water, typically in a glass vial. Though it can be released into a bigger area of water, it may not come back.

Wet Ones are the lowest for of Water Elementals and must have a home container in order to travel anywhere dry. They communicate with swishing and splashing, though they are usually just trying to escape their container.

Wet Ones aren't really favored by anyone. They most often find use by aquatic mages who have very few options in familiars.

Their shared abilities include increased swimming ability and a slightly longer duration for holding your breath.

Hall of Honour

for Familiar Elementals

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

    A neat little bunch.

I can imagine the Mage of a low level party starting out with a stonepal, with the joker of the party occasionally making a switch here and there. That would have been what a previous set of players I had would do. You cannot have a game without a touch of humour!

I think that these are interesting from what I think is the intended perspective, traditional fantasy, but I think that they could also be really interesting in a more Harry Potter sort of setting. In the former, they offer some interesting ideas, but I think would mostly matter in their actions and bonuses.

In a game focusing more on wizards, though, I think that they could be pretty neat. Stonepal shenanigans, maybe tubs of water for people to put their Wet One's in when they're occupied. Getting an upgrade could be a big deal - you could even use the four elements as a sort of Hogwarts-style Sorting, actually.

From the perspective of somebody interested in familiars, I think that they're neat.

That is a very interesting take on it. I've read the Potter books, seen the movies, I enjoyed them but I never really took it to the roleplay level. Elemental sorting is a very fun idea, and these familiar do fit in quite well with that. Great idea! Have some xp.
