What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#1I was trying to be polite in the subject line, but I won't be here. Sometimes I have asked the wrong question to truly get to the meat of the issue.
The questions I really want to ask is:
 What annoys you, pisses you off, aggravates you, grates on your nerves, is non-intuitive, annoying or any other negative expression you can think of. :mace:
Take off the gloves and give it to me straight. I need to know what you dislike or hate about the features or the site in general.
Remember, this is about the site and how it works and looks, not about me or your fellow Strolenites. Do that in your own thread, this is mine.
We are doing a from scratch build with some new technology but, in the meantime, I want to polish this up and see if I can get rid of some of the annoyances you have been dealing with forever. I will work this thread along with the bug report thread and see if we can get this is back into working order!!
Thanks in advance for any time you put into the responses. Knowing what you don't like will hopefully be a fun and enlightening experiment!
Bring it!! -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#2Oh, and no pansy ass kids gloves with the 3 things nice for every 1 thing bad BS.
Poke me right in the eye with no remorse. It won't bother me a bit, just want to fix what needs to be fixed so don't be a wuss when it comes to laying it out there for me. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#3I understand the need for the landing page with newbies, but it's kind of annoying to go through that extra click to get to the latest sub list. I don't know what I'd suggest to fix that, except maybe only show it to new members until they click some "never show me this again" box? -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#4Yes. My hatred for the landing page is severe. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#5Thirding landing page, an option in personal settings to disable it would be nice.
Another issue with the main site, on tablets the drop down menu for choosing categories to to view is almost unusable. The problem is that while the super catagories (items, npcs, ect) display fine, when you select one of them to view the subcategories the list will go off the bottom of the page, at which point you can't scroll down to view the other options because scrolling scrolls whatever page your on instead of the menu. As a bonus feature the background behind the menu also disappears when you scroll down, so you get to see the page behind the menu in addition to the menu options you want to scroll below. I'm pretty sure I've had this problem on android tablets in addition to my current ipad, so it's not just apple deciding they didn't want to comply with standards or whatever. The only option I can think of is instead of it opening a tabbed in list under the category you picked, open another menu to the side like what you get in start menus when you run into a folder/subfolder.
Likely file under extremely low priority, because I'm pretty sure it's just a function of me using screens that are under 8", and even then I still can see a total of 19 categories/subcategories at once, which is enough for most of them, the only menu options that suffer are Items, NPCs, Societies, Systems, Library & Quick. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#6Landing page looks nice, but has to go.
Recently commented on and most recent subs are way more useful. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#7when checking out or working on in-works in 'personal workplace', clicking back takes you back to main author page, at which time it is necessary to click on 'personal workplace' once more.
-
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#8Another vote on usability of the main site from mobile devices. When I'm on my phone, I can navigate the forum ok, but I gave up long ago on the main site. The problem, as Pariah points out, comes from trying to scroll the popup menu. One: there are too many links, and, two: submenus would be easier to deal with if they were the only options visible once you clicked on a top category to show them (plus an option to go back up a level).
And on the topic of too many links across the top: On non-mobile devices, I often get the search pushed down below the rest of the menu, along with a horizontal line, because I never maximize my browser. This is primarily true with the Chromebook, but sometimes also true on desktops. The trailing search box and line sit on top of sub text as I scroll. It's not the end of the world, and it certainly doesn't prevent me from reading, but it does qualify as annoying. -

Agreed. It would be nice if clicking on any of those links (Top Sub, Quests, Recent Activity, etc) would add a URL fragment to the current address so that they would register in the history. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#10Not a fan of the landing page. Could be better integrated with the main sub page. I feel like the main sub page also has a lot of dead space and is inefficient.
Edit: I would like to note that the landing page does have useful information on it that should go somewhere.
I do not like the drop down categories and agree they are virtually unusable. There are too many of them and they make it way too hard to find useful things. You need a MS-office style revamp to get away from menu trees and into a larger more visual bar. I also hate that my username and stats do not scroll with this bar. Ditch the cutesy-promotion ads, and merge the three next to the Strolen's Citadel logo into one useful thing.
I do not like that when I click on one of my in-works and then hit the back button I go back to my main profile and not my in-works.
Basically everyone hit on my most significant issues. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#11The site eating submissions and the forum eating comments.
Sometimes when typing up a post (or sub) an auto log out, the internet, or the site itself will crap out an error and my post vanishes to the electronic abyss.
Give the site some kind of auto save feature ala G mail and G docs that auto saves as you type.
Being able to export subs as .pdf files would also be a desired feature. (asked for it many times in the past I know but here's hoping it will come to be this time around.) -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#12As a new comer to the site I found three things really annoying:
#1: Having to go into the quick tab next to the forums tab on the main page just to write a submission? Cleverly hiding the input submission button so new users have to ask someone where to find it is pretty counter intuitive and an unnecessary barrier to new members making their first sub.
How about giving us a big red "Create Submission" Button right on the front page replacing the 210 Muro Awards icon? (Muro awards seem slick and all, but a front page icon to an award thread that happened 4 nearly years ago?)
#2 Free Text having a level requirement
When making a sub I want to make it the best and most useful possible sub my ability allows, locking features that make my submission better until I earn a higher level is admittedly frustrating, I would recommend just letting people have access to the tools of the site so we don't need to pester other members to add free text our our subs.
#3: The bug that lets you go into negative votes remaining.
Yes I know it's a bug and I figure it will be fixed in the next build, but it's annoying none the less.
#4: Personal space to upload images and mp3's for use in subs and forum posts.
More a feature request than a annoyance, but having space on the site to upload images and sound files to embed into our submissions or forum threads would be slick. As it stands users need to upload things to photo bucket or G drive , before linking them in a submission (most sites don't allow hot linking) hosting them here would be a nice fix. Maybe base the storage space off the users level 100-250mb a level or something? -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#13Impromptu mockup of my idea for a better main page layout.
News needs to be up top. Things like quests, freetext, promotions, highlights, etc.
Forum, Library and New Sub (yes, new subs not Quick) are all different icons from the archives, which are represented by their icons. (got lazy, only did three)
Next to new subs are also old subs you have not read. (I have no idea why that shows up in your personal workspace.
HOH should also go in here but I wasn't able to fit it in my mockup. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#14In regards to Lady Wolf
#2 I'm going to have to agree that using an established free text should probably be available from the beginning. It's kinda silly to prevent people from being able to categorize their posts properly until lvl 3.
#4 Since we first got images on the site the cost of storage space has dropped significantly, and I'm pretty sure cost was the driving factor back then for having to do off site storage, right? (I don't want to dig though the archives, which is shy I'm asking) Even though I'm unlikely to use images, I'm also all for people who want them being able to use them without ever needing to leave our warm and comfy Citadel. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#15Don't like the landing page, H-A-T-E the golden cow that is voting on subs. Feedback is great, the votes are not. It keeps me from writing on here and it keeps me from leaving feedback. The sub page can also be a right pain to deal with in terms of formatting. -

Don't like the landing page, H-A-T-E the golden cow that is voting on subs.
New here and not trying to derail the thread, but "Golden Cow?" I dunna get it? -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#17Sacred Cow. But this thread is meant to be blunt, so its not sacred here. Hamburger anyone?
The whole should we vote or not.
Maybe both? A simple 'Yes, I like this' OR a detailed vote, depending on your choice.
I am firmly in the Yes vote camp myself. For all their drama, votes serve a purpose. Democracy is messy.
-
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#18I personally like votes. They make me strive to ensure I put out the best pieces I possibly can and force me to evaluate what are and are not good ideas. So I can be proud of my average, even if my post count and level is low. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#19I see the comments being a better way of gauging a submissions quality than a 1-5 number, (or even a 1-100 number) but I guess that's just me? -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#20What annoys you, pisses you off, aggravates you, grates on your nerves, is non-intuitive, annoying or any other negative expression you can think of.
Take off the gloves and give it to me straight. I need to know what you dislike or hate about the features or the site in general.
I bet a lot of this has been said already, but...
The main/landing page. 1) Could be better looking. A lot. 2) Should have subs right on it! That is 100% what first drew me in. I followed a link here and BAM! I was all Woah, look, people are sharing all sorts of stuff! This is COOL! I posted my first sub that very day, I think.
The Citadel Menus: 1) Some items are hard for new people to find. In particualar, the Input Submission option. 2) If the window is sized too small, the menu becomes USELESS. It tries to put everything in a dropdown or something weird and it's completely un-navigable.
The Forum Menus aren't as difficult, but could be a bit better, too.
The submission categories: There could be some refinements to the categories. Perhaps a Genre Category, too? Not sure about that when freetext works fine.
The submission types: 1)There should be a way to easily look up all "advice requested" or "collaboration requested" subs. Like a menu option to see them all or something. Ditto public drafts. 2) I'd love a way to make a sub that appears on the first page but is non-votable. Like... I want to write up a sub that's pure exposition and I don't want people voting on it because it's just the background fro the REAL sub.
Formatting subs: Could be easier. :P
-
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#21Non-voting, background subs can be stubs, but they never see the front page.
-
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#22Re: the voting and commenting issue, there's a lot of points I agree and some I disagree with. Different people are looking for different things, and I don't think it's possible to program a system that accounts for all of those variables.
For example, I want a 5/5 on every singe one of my subs, OR I want to know how it can be improved. If it's not perfect, I want to know what could make it better. I want that feedback. I'd rather have that than a vote, or XP, or levels. Don't get me wrong, I WANT that 5/5. But I want to know I've earned it.
But no system should force people to apply the same criteria for voting, nor should we *require* detailed feedback with every vote.
So the current system seems about as good as it can be, really. The only way I could see it being better was if we implemented and people USED a system which let you vote separately on idea vs. execution. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#23Good stuff. Didn't want to derail the commentary so let it flow.
Couple comments
1) Landing page - got it. Did a quick fix so the links go to the favored page. The landing page is still there for now....Maybe turn it into a newbie page that rolls through features of the site for newbies to glance through and then forget.
2) Links - got it This is an old test that I was going that way in: http://readpostplay.com/main5
3) *Personal workspace - sorta easy fix
4) Mobile viewing - got it
5) *Freetext - Easy fix
6) Autosave - oh yes
7) pdfs - on my dream sheet as well. Technology might make it easier now. Not a perfect solution, but the links on the left side "Read Now" "Read Later" etc. If you click on the "Print" one, you can save as pdf. I had to jump through some hoops to format the page to work with it that way. Not the greatest, but you can save to pdf from that. I want my own version that allows me more control and doesn't depend on a third party though!
8) Request help and collaboration: The closest we have is a random here: Library->I am Helping http://strolen.com/helping but agree with what you said
9) Pictures - you can upload pictures to the site. Been available for awhile unless there is another bug. Choose the graphic box on the format bar, window will open. Find the file on your computer using the "Choose File", select it and it pretty much uploads it for you and inserts it into the post. You should be able to drag pictures from your drive onto that space too. Linux doesn't work so hot but windows probably is fine. Once it is uploaded, you can browse for it later if you need it again, otherwise it should be in the post already. Everyone saves their own images in their own directory. Only way to share is to get the link from them.
10) Negative votes: oops
11) Stubs: There are large threads on these. I basically don't like them and still don't truly understand their purpose. Not getting into that again. :)
12) voting: do a search for many opinions on that. Nobody will ever win that one.
* things can be fixed very soon
I think that covers the big ones. All good comments, keep the complaints coming!!

Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#24Not being able to easily see when someone has updated their sub so you can re-read and revote.
Maybe someone on the front page similar to the hoh where after you edit a sub and expand on it you can click on a "feature this sub in the edited and expanded section" check box and it will be flagged alongside a bunch of other subs in separate area people can go to and revote on older subs the author has done significant changes to. (maybe with an XP incentive?)
As it is there's not much incentive for people go back and edit a sub after getting feedback since getting the word out is difficult and there's not much incentive for people re re-vote on a sub they already visited. -

This. I agree with this about five million and one percent. -

12) voting: do a search for many opinions on that. Nobody will ever win that one.
From my point of view, that's BS, the yes side has already won, and everytime it's brought up to discussion we hear, oh well nothing to do about it shrug, no point in stirring the hornets nest blah. Hence why I called it a sacred cow in the first place. And it's not like this is a case of if-it-ain't-broke, clearly if the yes side was right, more people would be writing and voting. Instead we lose most of the new members that join, the most telling of which are the ones who actually write one or two subs only to move on.
I can only tell you what made me stop writing on here, if that's just going to be overlooked fine. But don't expect things to improve then. If we want solutions, real solutions and not just hot air, we can't just turn a blind eye to what's uncomfortable. We have a system that requires more members to be balanced and fair, yet we do not have those numbers and so the system is unfair and demotes growth. It's a catch 22 ffs and everyone who's benefiting from it is obviously going to be positive, and those members will still be here but it's not gonna help you gain new staying members. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#27I personally think that without the voting, the subs would lie flat with no motivation to interact actively at all. We would simply read them and move on, maybe drop in a comment or two, but provide no real feedback. This still is true mostly _with_ voting - the hit vs vote ratio is very high.
As for me personally benefiting from voting, in the last month, with 140+ submissions here, I have had 7 votes cast, most of these on my most recent submission. Pure comments without votes? 0.
There is gamifaction on Strolens with the level mechanic, and votes are key to that. Pulling those out really takes this mechanic out of discussion and we become basically a blog site. I like the level system, I like votes and I like the community.
Its certainly not perfect - a the many incidences of drama that have occurred over the years can attest. That this can drive away members is problem though, but not one I have a real answer for.
Why haven't I moved on? Why do I post? Because the good outweighs the bad, even though the bad exists.

I would say that the existence of the votes compels people to vote when they do offer feedback, but perhaps removing them would alleviate some of that pressure and get more people to offer their thoughts. We know there's more actual readers of subs than there are votes, surely not that few a number has an opinion to offer, something is keeping them from doing so.
Once they're off the frontpage, the average extra vote/comment received is probably less than 5 within 10yrs or more. It can however be a factor in revenge voting, where negative attention is accrued, again we don't have enough active members to counter the negative effects. Feedback is welcome, but I feel the votes take away some/if not all of that enthusiasm, it puts the focus on the wrong thing. Some say they've moved past that, maybe they have, I couldn't, probably many more couldn't either. Everyone votes according to their own agenda, but those separate entities' agendas have so much more impact since we're so few. Even a factor such as when you post a sub could make a huge difference on how many people even look at it, but that's only partly related.
The gamification as you call it, is reliant on subjective views. You could be the most passionate writer in the world, you still might not unlock these little medals and icons and what not, depending on how the community receives you. If it was down to pure grit, sure, that's a game I can get behind, but when your success depends on factors that you may not have control over, such as when you happened to have joined the community, how random fellow members are feeling on that particular day/week, then I don't really see much fun in that. Different ceilings exist for different people, we're not all treated equally and we don't all have the same circumstances and opportunities for success/failure.
The current community is great, but it is also a bunch of reclusive marsh people stuck in a stale bog with skeletons in every closet. :P We could do more to be more inclusive, to get a bit more influx, and then make them stay. Nothing is so good it can't be made better.
I would at least like to be given the opportunity to be proven wrong (or gods forbid, right), instead of always hearing nothing can be done about it. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#29I want more feedback on submissions, I like the voting, but that's just ego stroking. What if the vote was replaced with a generic Facebook style Like?
I dislike the landing page, because when I go to the site, it's landing page, then I go to most recent, I don't see the new submissions, and I don't always use the laptop to view the site, so lots of new stuff rolls through without me seeing it.
I would like to see an increased utility and usability for images, but I understand data usage and limits.
On the editing side, while I vote most emphatically AGAINST embedding MP3s in submissions (half of the bane of Myspace, the other half being glitter graphics). -

I can empathize with this a bit, seeing people with a nice stack of badges next to their forum name can be inspiring, until they run into the demoralizing problem of being unable to garner enough good votes in the right areas to earn them yourself.
A nice fix for this would be changing the criteria to have "x number NPC subs of 4+ rating or what" to include a second criteria of "OR x number of NPC subs total" for example. This would encourage people to still create subs and work towards the goal even fi they don't capture the requisite 4+ votes for whatever reason?
On the editing side, while I vote most emphatically AGAINST embedding MP3s in submissions (half of the bane of Myspace, the other half being glitter graphics).
On this I can totally agree, auto playing mp3's on sites is annoying as hell, however it being embedded and requiring the user to click on a play button or what not would be handy, in Echo's pbp rp he often links you tube videos of music that adds nicely to the scene, being able to discreetly link (optional) music for submissions would be cool in that way as well. (I seem to recall a sub about a bards song that had a MP# download attached?)

This. But maybe not EVERY time a sub updates. For ex, I go into my subs and make little fixes all the time. Typos, maybe change a word. I would NOT want the site telling people "Hey everyone, check out this updated sub!" But there have been a couple times when large fixes happened. Including a recent issue with a re-write so big I thought it would be better as a new sub entirely. If we had a way to mark "major" updates, which would tell users, "hey, this is significantly changed from its original post," maybe putting it back to the front page even, that'd be cool. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#32You can leave a note when you update a sub, though that does not push it on the main page again.
-
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?

You can leave a note when you update a sub, though that does not push it on the main page again.
Yeah, I've done that. And I usually just go into cbox and say "Hey, lookit the thing I fixed!" Still, a system would be nice. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#34I like the idea of a like, no pun intended. You either like something or you don't, what's a 3.5 to one is a 3.0 to another. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#35
[ If we had a way to mark "major" updates, which would tell users, "hey, this is significantly changed from its original post," maybe putting it back to the front page even, that'd be cool.
That was the idea, some kind of check box to mark it as "updated"
Also after a talk with 5 others in full chat the following idea came be:
Replace the current 1-5 vote system with three buttons:
A  (pretty obvious purpose)
A " :sherlock:" indicating the sub needs more work or could be improved significantly somehow (and you could explain why in the comments area)
and A :Thud: indicating zzzz or that you find the sub otherwise not exceptionally exciting/well done.
This way voting it still relevant but becomes more practical and useful to the writer and less of a turn off to new comers and those who thoroughly detest the current voting system. (it also evens the playing field and keeps people from becoming demoralized at not achieving the 4.5's and 5's others seem to easily acquire ;)

Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#36I'll disagree with the three stages. 1-5 with the .5 system offers a lot of granularity. I think three simultaneously offers too much and too little. If we go that route it would either be thumbs up, thumbs down, or you don't vote because you didn't feel strongly enough about it. A-la-YouTube. A meh vote to me is most insulting because it says "I recognize you worked hard on this, but I just don't care/don't like your idea/don't like your style" which would be something in the 4ish range numbers wise. -

But currently we get that already with votes, a 3 is supposed to be "excellent quality submission" but most people these days take it as "barely good enough it's not a 5" for some reason, more so when people don;t give coments on how to improve the sub/why it didn't rate higher for them. -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#38Vote discussions are off topic. Drag up an old voting discussion thread from the bowels of the site and provide your POV there after you read through all those discussions, but let this thread continue to be productive issues with the citadel please.
Things that annoy me:
Bounce rate. We get a ton of views and not that many new users. The landing page was an attempt to get some of those to at least register. in the last 30 days we have had over 6100 separately tracked visitors on the site with an average duration of over 8 minutes online. 5,795 first time visitors. We get the traffic, how do we get them to stay? Everything is free for viewing and I don't want to take that away. I don't like the idea of BH comments. That was shut down for a reason. How do we entice them to join? Tried a little bit annoying graphics for those not logged in, but need to rethink the entire strategy from phase 1. I am taking some UI classes now and some web psychology type things so will see what ideas those produce over time. That may dictate much of the redesign. To incorporate your ideas and better practices.
-Stubs
-Lack of printable view
-Task pages have always been a good idea but super poorly executed
-Author pages. Difficulty in usage and lack of specific data that can better highlight the author for others to enjoy
--as well as tools for the author to see how they have been doing
-Poor neglected ideas...what they hell can we do with them?
-My lack of better design skills that can appropriately use all the art I have available!!
-Difficulty for newbies to jump in. High learning curve.
Just a few to get us back on track. :)

Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#39PS. We have graphic uploads in the sub (use the picture button and upload all day) and there is NO issue with bandwidth or space for them. Seems to be a running misconception....
Need a User/Citadel graphics Gallery!!! -
Re: What annoys you about how the Citadel works?
#40How about asking newbies? I made a post in the Fantasy Grounds forum, though that forum is also very small and I don't expect much response. Someone could do the same in the ... crumbunnies can't remember the name. Anyways, other forums. Maybe try some forums that are geared more towards writers too. We're basically a focus group of ourselves, and we're not good candidates for saying what does not work for new people coming to the site. Ultimately I doubt there is much that can be done about the bounce rate other than a subscription wall which will lead to a lot of dead accounts. Such is the nature of D&D resources, people come, take what they need, and leave.
That said, what drew you to stay at the Citadel? What does the Citadel do well that we should work to highlight?
For me it was the leveling system. It was measurable, tangible rewards for being active in the community which really liked. I draw satisfaction from my profile.
On the note of author pages, is anyone here familiar with Neopets.com? Here is my user lookup. It's more or less the default with a small section up-top I added. Compare with this person, who currently has user lookup of the week. We're both required to use the same amount of characters, the same code is allowed and disallowed, the same features of the page are required to be visible, but it allows for a lot of personal expression. Is this what you are going for?
I don't think a lot more is needed in the way of statistics (then again I've only got 12 subs) but more than one way of sorting this page might be nice.
