That said, what drew you to stay at the Citadel? What does the Citadel do well that we should work to highlight?

For me it was the leveling system. It was measurable, tangible rewards for being active in the community which really liked. I draw satisfaction from my profile

    Well said!

Jenny told me to post an idea I mentioned my second day part of the citadel here and filled me in on some discussion she had with other peeps about it yesterday so here goes:

The idea is a spoiler text type of filter that we can apply to specific citadel members (by name or that user ID thingy you use to share credit for a sub) this way those of us that GM for other members here at the citadel can still post our ideas and stuff and the players won't accidentally read them and ruin the campaign for themselves. (They could still highlight the spoiler text and read it if they wanted, but they wouldn't be able to do so without a deliberate choice.)

It would work by us choosing the spoiler filter box and entering the name/ID number of the Strolen member/s along with a free text word (for a campaign label) when writing out submission, then when the user/s we named try to view the sub, it hides it all behind spoiler blackout with a pop up to the effect of "Warning! The author of this sub has flagged this work as a spoiler, do you wish to proceed yes?/no?

This way the filter won't stop non players from reading the sub and still allow the player to read the sub at a later date after the GM tells them it's cool, the campaign ends or whatever.

I was thinking a simpler mechanism that leverages existing freetexts:
    "
Each user has a Spoiler Freetext field that can contain any number of freetexts.  Any sub tagged with a freetext in the list would get the spoiler warning.  Generally the freetext would be the campaign name, but if the author has submissions they don't want to be set as spoilers - generic campaign info - they could use a different freetext like "Campaign GM Only"

This would flag the entire submission."

Per paragraph spoilers are good in theory, but take a lot more work (by the author) than flagging the entire submission.

Author names could also be put in the spoiler bucket if you really want to be cautious.

I like  your idea much better Valadaar, it seems easier to implement and more elegant in its functionality.

    Vote discussions are off topic.

    Things that annoy me:
Bounce rate. We get a ton of views and not that many new users. The landing page was an attempt to get some of those to at least register. in the last 30 days we have had over 6100 separately tracked visitors on the site with an average duration of over 8 minutes online. 5,795 first time visitors. We get the traffic, how do we get them to stay?

    How is that off topic?

What annoys you, pisses you off, aggravates you, grates on your nerves, is non-intuitive, annoying or any other negative expression you can think of. :mace:

Take off the gloves and give it to me straight. I need to know what you dislike or hate about the features or the site in general.

Do you want to go back and change that to, tell me how everything is great the way it is and we shouldn't change a thing? I'm saying the votes may very well be the reason for the bounce rates, if you can't even consider that as a possibillity for whatever reason, why ask for advice. Maybe we should talk about llamas instead? You like those.

I was thinking the same thing. You asked for a brutal no pulling of punches, and now you're crying "Not in the face! Not in the face!" :P

Perhaps it's a large enough issue it deserves to be split off into its own discussion (I know it's been done, but obviously some people aren't satisfied), but it's certainly not off topic if you ask what annoys people about how the site work and they tell you voting is one of those things.

Wow. Are you looking to be offended? Did I imply any of my thoughts about the voting idea? I acknowledged it and asked for more discussion on it to be moved to a thread that actually pertains to the issues with voting.

The discussion was derailing the thread and, from experience, if I didn't stop it...it would take over and killed it. You made your point. I hear you, "next idea" is all I am saying. This is not a thread to have another argument about voting. You don't like it. Noted. Let's move on to the next thing that annoys you...which is me in this case. ;) Fair enough.

Like the landing page. Everybody hates, that page. Copy that. Many put in points on it. Fantastic, perfect. Validates it. Pointed it out with some ideas and the thread moved on. If it did spin out into a bigger discussion, I would have stopped that topic too.

This is brainstorming. I don't want to solve anything in this thread, that isn't the point. Especially the ideas that will change the ENTIRE structure of the Citadel are going to require some serious thought and discussion....somewhere else. Links is another one that we have discussed over and over with valid ideas...and ended up leaving as is. But that is another issue that may require an ENTIRE rewrite. So I hear the idea, acknowledge it, next.

Upon further looking, many of those voting discussion threads are locked in the Admin cavern. There are a few still out there but not to the level of discussion you are wanting to take it. It comes up every few years and, after a heated debate, we end up leaving it alone because we can't come up with a better idea. But we are doing a rebuild, the point of this thread, so maybe we discuss it another time. But, again, please take your ideas and put your argument forward in another thread. There, I will engage the idea ad nauseam and you will hear all my thoughts on it. And don't take that as a sign of disrespect, I have much more patience for these kind of discussion than others, but the site has been here for going on 20 years and we have definitely talked about it seriously a dozen or more times.

I am sorry if you took it as shutting the idea down. Not the intent. The intent was to allow this thread to continue......and this response just may kill it anyway, but I hope not.

Oh okay, sorry sorry. Then we're all clear.  :) But wait, did you tell me to take it to a thread which I can't access then? :P Or am I misunderstanding again... Oh well, said my piece really.

(((There are threads, just not as juicy. But please start another thread and I will be happy to join it.)))

I noticed we have the ability to add submissions to a group of favorites for later reference, how about giving us a button to do the same for forum threads and posts? (Found some real gems in the forums for rping and it'd be real convenient to favorite them I like I can do with submissions.)

I know a lot of people have different experiences with this one, but the split between the Full Chat and the Everywhere Else chat really annoys me. I personally prefer to load up the Full Chat exclusively, and I probably should haunt there more frequently as activity there will lead to activity on the site in general.

I also really dislike the absence of the Muro Awards in recent years, even if my chances of winning one are nil due to lack of submission activity on my part.

The editor is a constant pain to wrangle with- has been for years. Sometimes I find myself writing in the HTML viewer so the WYSIWYG editor doesn't butcher my submission- Corran's Scribe being of particular note.

I think author pages should list the freetexts they use most commonly.

Oh man, is there a way we can edit ideas added to a sub? The formatting never seems to work on them and once they've been posted there is nothing you can do to change them.

Click the eyeball... The eye reveals many things. (which does seem to confuse a lot of people, so maybe that should be "looked" at as well)

The problem with the full chat is that it doesn't really work on a phone, while the cbox does. Also, there are plenty of times when I can be somewhat present in the cbox, or I want to watch what people say while reading a sub or post, but I can't commit to the full chat.

I do miss being able to see who is in the full chat from the forum home page.
