like the title says, I want to run something. 2-3 players.

Who wants to play and what would you like to play?

    Cosmic Era?
    Imbria?
    Genre Fantasy?
    Wargame?
    Horror?

A new toy...err GM to try out!  Heeheehee.  :D But in all seriousness, if you're doing something that involves piloting big mechas that would be fun. Or Shadowrun or World of Darkness maybe? Eager to try any of those if you would have me.  :)

There's one, and an updated list of games to play:

    Mecha level game (Military hardcore)
Shadowrun (would be set in Cosmic Era)
Old School World of Darkness (Would make a contest where only one player gets to be something weird and everyone else has to be something normal to the setting. Example: in a group of vampires, all the players but one have to be standard clans, but one player would get to be a strange or rare clan)

I'd be open to the first two, and leaning towards pounding away in battlemechs :P
3rd does not appeal to me right now.

Ho ho! I am a cruel mech gamer, I typically like to start my players off in second line machines

So, we are going to be running a military mecha campaign.

All characters are assigned the rank Sergeant in the Atlantic Federation Mecha Corps.

Congratulations you worthless bunch of maggots. Somehow you made it through basic, passed the exams to get into the mobile armor advanced academy, and then by the love of Sweet Baby Jesus you somehow survived the grueling Mechanized Academy, and have been assigned one of the greatest war machines to ever grace the face of this sweet blue green planet.

I don't care if you think it's an antiquated hunk of 50 year old junk, it's your mech. You are going to take care of it. It will take care of you. You are an unstoppable fighting force, an when the boys in suits get tired of shouting at each other over tables, we are the ones that are going to deal out some fully automatic 75mm diplomacy.

Please choose your mech from the list below:
    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Wolfhound
A light mech, all energy weapons, runs hot, hunts power armor and infantry

    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Sentinel
A very dated design, but a few remain in service, mostly in lower end garrisons.

    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Clint
Fast, armored scout, a common machine in the mecha reserves, the IFV to the MBT of the larger mecha

    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Centurion_(BattleMech)
The Centurion is no longer in production, but the remaining machines are incredibly tough, and remain in secondary and garrison units. It is not uncommon for the machines to pick up melee weapons, usually secondary issue mecha power axes.

    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Wolverine_(BattleMech)
The Wolverine is a mainstay of the Federation Mecha corps. This is functional a Model 1 Wolverine, decades older than the machines on the front line.

If you have any special vehicle requests, IE a specific mech, PM me and we can discuss it. I am open to some less common machines being fielded, but this is going to be a rat-tag starting mission, so no experimental, no prototypes, and no Heavy or Assault mecha. (Corollary: i would be willing to discuss something in the 60-65 ton range, but with either a serious justification, or some sort of associated drawback, IE mecha flaw)

Fun list, I'll give it a closer look later on tonight, do we pm you with our selections, char details and such or post them here?

Also is this free form or are we using a rulset? (or just a /d100 roll for things?)

PM me specific equipment questions and such.

Feel free to post character information here.

You can draw your character from any race or ethnicity within the Federation borders (Central and Eastern United States, Mexico, Caribbean, Western Europe (but not Mediterranean, or Eastern, or Scandinavia) and Equatorial Africa (Kinshasa, Lagos, etc)

There will be activity outside the cockpit, and yes Cosmic Era

So clones, cyborgs, low level genetic augments (Sorry, the army isn't going to give a battlemech over to a Dranei, if you have anything more obtrusive than cat ears you aren't going to be accepted into the mecha corps, there is A. an image to be upheld, and B. discrimination against extensive augmentation, same goes for cyborgs also, you can have it, but it's low key.

Okie so what rule system to we use to write up the chars? Or do we just go for a paragraph or two of detail and leave skills & such ambiguous?

Paragraph or two, I'm going to be freestyling it.

Things I would like to see: brief origin/bio, with emphasis on what made you want to join the military, and then push to get into one of the highest levels of service (mecha corps is only below special forces). On a personal side, a couple of color points, like a personal interest. I would LOVE to have some warrior-poets or similar as mecha pilots.

    A note on languages:

English is the 'Common' of the Atlantic Federation
French is the 'High' or 'Elite' language (rich people, political leaders, etc learn or chipslot French, this separates them from the common masses who generally do not speak french, thank you Elysium)
German is the technical language of the Federation.

Almost all citizens of the Federation are polyglots, or have the services of a robot translator, chipslot ability to load language software (though there are always 'tells' for when someone actually knows a foreign language, and when they are using a cheater chip)

I will ask questions of the characters later, as the story progresses, such as their religious affiliation and political persuasion.
  21. Re: I want to run a game, who wants to play?

I'm leaning towards a Wolverine. Solid slugs rather than energy weaponry. English and French for languages learned, American nationality with possibly some latin or european mixed in. I want to play a leader this time around rather than a follower so I don't have to take second seat in awaiting posts and what not. I feel like the picture I chose speaks volumes about her attitude in either case.

    More to come later.

    Maxine Sanchez

Comes from a rich family, new money, owing their success to the current ruling house, unquestioningly loyal.

Having grown up poor, Maxine is no stranger to dirty fighting. But she's been doing her best trying to fit into her new role, even going so far as learning French and touching up her manners. She remains a very straightforward person though.

Father, Mother, Two Siblings and a Boyfriend (Jose Bauer).

In her spare time she's started playing tennis and doing yoga, all in keeping up with her newfound status, she's not very committed though. When she finds a spare moment she sneaks off to visit her old bar and play some pool instead.

Marsha Stressor, a last name better suited to a drill sergeant, or grease monkey, the two career paths of her parents. Hailing from the British Isles area, she has a somewhat reserved and formal bent to her personality, and has annoyed more than a few of her battle brothers and sisters (both superior and subordinate) by occasionally citing specific regulations from various military conduct and mecha operation manuals when the situation warrants it to support an argument or avoid reprimand.

Born into a small family Marsha was raised on tales of glory and news feeds of mecha pilots striding across the battlefields like gladiators and knights of old, making them into the legendary heroes and heroines of her youth. Seduced by the numerous recruiting posters plastered across bus terminals and childhood dream she signed up for the mecha corps right after high school, a decision she's never regretted for an instant.

Her brother joined a space construction program, not long after she signed onto the mecha corp, and she regularly speaks with him over vid link, and often exchange stories of their careers, and how the other one clearly made "the wrong choice." This friendly banter is one of the bright points of her weeks, although she tries not to let on to her comrades how important her family is to her lest they thing she's still "soft."

Among her personal possessions are an old baseball cap given to her by one of the legendary mecha pilots when she was nine and happened to run into him at a mecha promotional event, and surprised the man by addressing him by his full title and even citing his note worthy accomplishments in order.

On the field she has shown an affinity for medium mecha, and a quiet leadership that makes her a natural second in command of a lance, offering quiet support and insight to the lance commander and outward displays of confidence that inspire others to trust the chain of command.

    Derek Cobain

Derek Cobain is a man of contrasts.  The son of prominent Archanotech engineers, he shunned that world for a life in the lights, a star in Class N(ormal) MMA circles.  He was only barely a Normal, as his parents had made certain his genetic code was as clean as possible, and put in as many non-obtrusive mods as they could manage.  The rest was hard work and minor drugs.

He may have ended that way, his neck broken in a cage somewhere by some more heavily ‘roided loser by the name of Bubba, when something, maybe a cheesy holo-vid movie, awoke a sense of patriotism and took him from the mat to the recruitment office.

His natural fighting aptitude served him well, and his augmentations, good genes, and the secret meddling of his parents, had him moved quickly up from grunt, to power armor, and finally to mech pilot.  His close-combat skills earned him the assignment of a Hatchetman.

    [img width=400 height=321]http://www.sarna.net/wiki/images/b/b0/3050U_Hatchetman.jpg

Internally, he suspects not all his accomplishments to this point were his own, and so is looking to again make his name through his own actions. He’s hungry.  He is concerned also that his parents are not done yet with their meddling.

Derek is intelligent and displays controlled aggression on the battlefield. He will not foolhardy risks but also knows the value of the bluff and showmanship, even in the fields of war.

Derek is a lover of physical sport in all its forms, and the ultimate prison for him would be a desk job. As such, he has virtually no past-times that involve sitting down. He is always moving - or sleeping.  Meetings, training sessions  and briefings are immense tests of his self control.

Through his MMA career, he has made a number of fans, and not a few enemies.

Derek has a girlfriend  (Amy Anderson - cybernetically enhanced) who he believes is true, though he is worried about what affects his deployments may have on that.  He consciously accepts his career choice makes her secondary in his life.

    So here is the layout:

You will comprise the 337th Irregular Mecha Platoon, assigned to Arco San Louis (St Louis, Missouri)

Command: Adjunct Nova (looks and talks like a military woman, but in all likelihood is a military AI housed somewhere inside the Mechadrome. Nova looks like a slightly older middle aged woman in crisp military attire, with a faint British accent

First Sergeant E8 Maxine Sanchez - Gossamer
    Wolverine Main Battlemech

Staff (Buck) Sergeant E7 Marsha Stressor
    Shadow Hawk Main Battlemech

    Sergeant E7 Derek Cobain
    Hachetman Assault Battlemech
(note: assault as designation of role, not weight class)

    Corporal E5 Redshirt
    Wolverine Main Battlemech

    Corporal E4 Stormtrooper
    Wolverine Main Battlemech

Bit of both, depending on the machines in question, your main battlemechs like the Wolverines, and the Shadow Hawk are more plodding, but they are fast plodders, running about 40-60 mph depending on terrain. The lighter mechs, like the Wasps, Stingers, Wolfhounds, and machines that look agile, like the Phoenix Hawk are more the agile sort.

Short answer: about like football players, the main battle mechs are linebackers and defensive ends, scout and recon mechs are tight ends and running backs. There aren't military machines that do acrobatics, but there would certainly be some weird stuff in the R&D and experimental and proof of concept machines

Nope.  One of the things about being a common mech is that there are plenty of them to go around.

Went back and reread the thread, found Maxine, and updated the mecha roster.

    Now for some real fun.

Each Battlemech has an internal LAI computer, and these computers have preset personalities, which over time grow, develop quirks, eccentricities and get wiped, reinstalled, patched, updated, and sometimes miss entire system upgrade cycles.

I would like everyone to submit a few characteristics for a generic mecha LAI, and these are going to be shuffled up and then handed out, so you can give one of your players a headache machine, or one that is a peach, but it will be a blind chance, you could end up getting whatever you give. As for Redshirt and Stormtrooper, I will provide their LAI inputs for the pile.

    Sample:
    LAI Persona 'Majel'
    Female
    Has a soothing matronly voice
Has zero personality and is nothing more than functionally a text to voice interface

Majel is the computer of the Enterprise aka Majel Barret Roddenberry

    LAI Persona 'HAL'
    Male/Asexual
    Has a very expressive voice
Obsessive personality, cannot stand secrets, has to know everything
Has no moral or ethical issues as long as following orders

HAL-9000 is the computer of the USS Discovery

Have fun with it, because the ground crews and computer techs have had plenty of time working with these machines to bring out some personality in the machine. PM your entries, and if you don't want to make one, just PM that and I will cover it.
  33. Re: I want to run a game, who wants to play?

    Battletech notes

Discard notions of range and damage as proposed in the original Battletech game. Each of your combat machines, even decades out of date and relegated to garrison duty, could trash almost any weapon in the modern arsenal. They are large, powerful, and ultimately deadly machines.

    Autocannons:
The Shadow Hawk has a shoulder mounted AC-5. This is neat because it means both hands are free to carry another weapon system, like a second AC-5 Wolverine Style. The Shadow Hawk's gun is a long barrel cannon, and as such it has longer range and greater accuracy. Stressor can hit targets accurately at 2-4 miles with this gun. The Wolverines carry snub barrel AC-5s, which are functionally going to be 75mm versions of Submachine guns. Accuracy isn't great, nor is range, but the gun makes up for it in rate of fire, the snub barrel guns can fire multiple times in a combat round. The Hatchetman has the biggest gun with a shoulder mounted AC-10. Rather than going bigger calibre, the AC-10 on the Hatchetman represents a multi-barrel rotary autocannon like on the A-10 Warthog. THe cannon produces a massive hailstorm of bullets that rip mechs, infantry and pretty much everything in front of it apart.

    Lasers:
If you can see it, you can hit it. There is no knock-down or knock back from a laser.

Missiles: better for hitting things other than mechs.

    Vehicle Specifics:
All of the mechs in this unit have two functional hand actuators, meaning that they can carry an additional 'rifle style' weapon system. These are compact and self contained, with the Wolverine's AC-5 basically showing what they look like. The Hatchetman can only equip light weapons and retain the use of it's hatchet (AC-2, Medium Laser 'pistol'). If the Hatchetman forgoes the hatchet, it can carry a standard medium sized weapon. The Shadow Hawk can equip medium and standard rifle type weapons, with one cannon over the shoulder, and a second in it's hands. It can carry either a second AC-5, a Large Laser 'Rifle', or a double barrel medium laser pistol. It can also choose to equip a hatchet like the hatchetman.

The Wolverine gets a special note as it can put down it's main weapon system completely. As such, the Wolverine can equip larger weapons than the Shadow Hawk or Hatchetman can (bonus for being a common mech) and this includes sniper style Light Gauss Cannons, heavier AC-10 rifle style cannons, plasma rifles, or over the shoulder mounts like artillery pieces, large bore mortars, and whatever else suitably anime comes to mind.

Drawback: These things have to be requisitioned from the arsenal and approved by the quartermaster and the unit commander.

Is there a mech sized Bazooka? Yes.
Can you have it? Probably not right now.

    Question from the audience (QFA)

    "Jump Jets"?

Jump Jets are available, and they're used for short duration movement.

They are high power high output ion drives and are used in limited bursts as they require a large amount of power, and quickly overheat even with dimensional heatsinks.

There are flight assist backpacks that can be connected to a mech which contain an A-pod, and thrust engines that facilitate an ungainly and not horribly fast mode of flight. These packs are typically used on mechs deployed in space or on one of the flying mech carriers. The mechadrome in Arco San Louis has several of these mech scale jetpacks.

    This is just the gun!

The vulcan cannon for the Hatchetman can and does have the ability to fire a large variety of munitions.

The current payload of the rotary cannon is a standard issue multi-purpose High Explosive Armor Piercing round. It is the most effecting against light to moderately armored targets like power armor troops, skeletrons, and other armored vehicles. It is also quite effective, if not efficient at shredding through light and medium mecha. Contrary to standard battletech rules, this cannon can fire more than one round/burst per turn.

You can make up to 3 declared attacks with the cannon, including strafing attacks, area suppression, or sustained fire. The firepower of this gun dwarfs the potential firepower of the automatic 75mm autorifles the Wolverines are carrying, or the long barrel 90mm cannon carried by the Shadow Hawk. This comes with the drawback that the rotary can deplete it's ammo supply much faster than the autorifles.
