  1. Cosmic Era Game

    #1
There was some interest posted in the Call of Captain-thulu thread.

So I have two questions, is there any interest in playing a Cosmic Era game, and if you are interested, what sort of thing do want to see? A CogNet cyberrun game, a mecha fighting game, espionage or shadowrun style?

If I can pick up 3 interested players (rules light game) and we can quickly pick one style of play, I will run a Cosmic Era Game.

I am be interested.  At the very least, I will follow along.
  3. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #3
    I'm interested in participating.

I don't have much experience in futuristic RP, so I'm down with any sort of style. The more techy cyberrun or shadowrun peak my interest, but I love a good mecha too.
  4. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #4
So at this point there is 2/3rd of the required interest, and I am also more interested in a shadowrun style game through the Cosmic Era and not so much a stompy robots shooting each other game.

That doesn't mean there won't be mecha, they just wont be the focus.
  5. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #5
I am also interested in a cosmic era RP. I'm fine with any style, though shadow run does peak my interest more. I haven't done any futuristic stuff either, like Dozus.
  6. Re: Cosmic Era Game

Sounds cool, though I have no knowledge of any Sci fi type gaming, so I will opt for reading along with the rp enthusiastically.
  7. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #7
So that's 4/3rds of the people I need to run the game. And I feel like there is enough interest in doing basically a shadowrun style game.

Some character concepts just to toss out. We are now brainstorming

    Bounty Hunter
    Parapsychic Mentalist (Firestarter)
    Special Forces/Military and Paramilitary
    Surrogate Operator/Droner
    Soldier or Mercenary
    Liaison or attache/Face
Gun Fighter (as per Equilibrium the Christian Bale movie)
    Hacker
    Arcanotech/Parapsychic Investigator
    Smuggler
    Gang Member/Career Criminal
    Street Samurai/Cyborg
    Weapon Specialist
Parapsychic Martial Artist (Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat)
    Scientist/Engineer/Technician
    Other Profession

    Races:
    Human
    Augmen (genetically modified human)
    Clone
Neo-Ethnic Race (technically augmen, but elves and shizznit)
    Seibertronian

    A few caveats:
Seibertronians cannot be cyborgs, nor can they use parapsychic abilities.
    Clones are second class citizens
Neo-Ethnic races are subject to their own forms of discrimination (if you are a 'night elf' expect to be treated like a sexual vending machine)

After reading your Nipponism post, I'm kicking around the idea of a Brazilian parapsychic street samurai. Someone from a hellish favela of Nueva Sao Paolo, who survived the streets by learning martial arts and honing latent parapsychic abilities. He got work with an illegal zaibatsu outpost in Brazil, got cybernetic implants, started security and paramilitary jobs. When the USSA shut down the zaibatsu, he went back to the streets to pick up whatever work he could get.

I like the character concept, but I would ask that you either pursue either the parapsychic avenue or the cybernetic augmentation. Both would work with the initial concept. You can go with a street samurai who has emerging and somewhat uncontrolled parapsychic abilities, or a parapsychic martial artist who is just starting the path to becoming a cyborg.

That's agreeable. I like the former idea best: a warrior steeped in Nipponese samurai culture who's discovering his own natural parapsychic talents.

So, lets discuss what sort of cybernetic modifications your favela dweller will have, and also what sort of parapsychic ability he will be manifesting.

Cybernetic enhancements use power, so he will have to have some sort of power access system, relative to his mods, plus mods. You can mod in weapons, but these are pretty much highly illegal (but obtainable) and the rest we can hammer out

Parapsychic abilities are broken down into Somatic, environmental, and manipulative. Somatic are enhancements to physical abilities, hyperstrength, hyperagility, hyperendurance. Environmental are pyro, cryo, telekinesis, etc and physically manifest and affect things beyond the user. Manipulative are things like telepathy, mind control, and that sort of thing.

Some basic things to get people thinking about their respective characters

You are all going to going to the Republic of Alaska on a covert mission. Each character will be contacted through basic means by a Fixer who will hire them/acquire their services, and will meet en route to a predetermined location.

    Expect action.

    Expect injury.

Expect that at least one of your characters will die.

    Expect fluid gameplay.

I'm going to get everything started with Dozus and when someone is ready to jump in, c'mon
  13. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #13
For the parapsychic, I'm thinking environmental, probably telekinesis.

Might need some direction on the cybernetic enhancements. Certainly some military-grade stuff, maybe some enhanced vision and speed. Don't know about power sources.

    Bionic limb replacement (with specialization)
    cybernetic eyes
    myomer muscle replacement (boosted strength)
    reinforced skeleton (boosted durability)
    cranial computer
    Nerve Tracing (boosted agility)

If you can find any Shadowrun books, they are good for lists of cyborg parts.
  15. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #15
Cool, getting some ideas looking at the 4e Shadowrun book.

I'm thinking of putting more into João's cybergear than other things. Cyberlimbs, arms with enhanced agility and some enhanced strength. Probably cybernetic eyes, nerve tracing, reaction enhancers. Dermal plating in the torso. Maybe some bonelacing? Don't let me get carried away, it's my first time looking at shiny Shadowrun stuff.  :P

Aside from that, probably real basic stuff: a katana, a medium pistol or two, and a ride.

Dozus, we could write our character's back story such that we already now each other.  Either in a positive or negative fashion, but I think that may give us more RP material to bat around.
  17. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    I'm game. What's your story?

Yeah, we should all have related backgrounds.

Anyways, my guy. I'm thinking a augmen hacker, who does criminal work mostly, but occasionally is hired by the government for mercenary work. Maybe me and Dozus were enemies at some point? Like I was part of a team that was trying to assassinate some guy Dozus was protecting? We could then have some quips relating to that job during the game, which would add some nice flavor. Or we could have done a job together at some point, if Dozus/scrasmax/axelerowe's prefers that.

Anyway, summed up, augmen criminal hacker.
  19. Re: Cosmic Era Game

Former Revolutionary with a Conservationist  pro-Government group that wanted to stand against the rise of private interests (the corps) as the controlling force law and order.  Maybe I was part of NACA see below.  But for  20 or 40 years I have been in prison or hiding or what have you…still practicing my paraphysic physical super martial arts, but off the grid.  Or at least not a grid anyone cared about. Know I am looking to get back in the game, any game, make so money so at least selling out would be option and perhaps more than anything my old boy wants to leave his mark or go swinging rather than dying on his yoga mat.

Hey Scars if your okay I will submit a version of this as a cosmic era post.

“North American Congressional Army (NACA –NAY-SAY):  In my old life I was a student of history and always thought it ironic that one group would want to over through a king just to put another king on the throne.  I would say the problem likely lied in the idea of absolute sovereign.  And by putting a king on a throne you are giving your defacto support for the idea of a king.  By my logic, that means if you believe in royalty as institution, than you shouldn’t try and over throw it.  The NACA was such as rebel group. They were an alliance of 19 local cells from around the continent, mostly young people, almost all with some level of mystical talent and all unaffiliated with the corporate machine.
By the time the Boxer Rebellion Remake (BRR) was underway, the media labeled NACA as bunch of street gangs and listless youth that proported to be defenders of democracy but that that affection was really ruse to hide there true motivation. Almost all media analysts said the group was really up in arms because they didn’t want to give up government benefits or work for corporate influences.  And while the NACA that actually took up arms, was a youth movement it wasn’t a grass roots movement. A group of dissatisfied academics quit there jobs and went out into urban areas to recruit unemployed kids to their political movements.  There were 19 founding members of the movement, all PhDs, all middle class, funded by government grants and practitioners of the magical arts.  Their manifesto had two stated goals. 1) To disseminate the information about the exploitation and utilization of mystical powers before this newfound resource could be monopolized by the corporations.  2) To save democracy from corporate influences.  The problem was, and they were well aware of this, was the government was in bed with the corporations.  It was impossible to tease were one started and the other ended.
So the NACA wanted to overthrow the government in order completely to restore it. In my opinion that goal is why they fell apart. In the field they were a crack unit they over powered trained and well-equipped troops with absurd “mystical weapons” and glamour spells. It was no surprise when they took over government buildings in Seattle WA, Washington DC, Indianapolis IN, and besieged Norfolk VA. However, the world responded with a clear shrug of indifference.  The NACA really didn’t know what to do, because the corps didn’t get involved. Did the Corps really care if there was a government at this point, as long their contracts were honored.  And the NACA purposely didn’t demand a change in government services. They thought they would fight the government contract battle after they got a corp free government, a government for the people.
But most of the people worked for the corps and those that didn’t were so disenfranchised that they didn’t give a shit. There was no one for the NACA to negotiate with except the government they wanted to overthrow.  The government agreed to make some changes and pass a resolution supporting a high corporate court.  But nothing really happened, the 19 got amnesty, but not too surprisingly they were all either killed or arrested for other chares in the months following the BRR.  Less than a year after the dramatic seizure of government facilities the NACA was disbanded. Some of its wings, such as Project Hope, The Green Mountain Boys and the United Workers Front went down swinging, but in they end the government was only weaker.  The lasting effect of the BRR was not a direct curbing of corporate poor, but wave of mystically trained youth without any corporate attachments suddenly on the streets.  This could have been a potential threat for the corps, but in the end most of the NACA vets ended up working for the corps freelance.

any the old guy could be one of your relatives a father or father-in-law.  He is looking to reconnect with the world, but showing at your door with snow globe and baseball mitt is not going to make for absent fatherhood. So he finds away to engineer it that he can be on this mission.    He would have to have some former NACA contacts that are straight up underworld types now.  This way we can role-play all kinds of shit about your character's backstory, cause this guy will really be interested in hearing it.  It will also make the adventure more about your character personal exploration than the loot or the heist.  Plus, with one character likely to die, hate the old man or love him we got melodrama x10

    Option 2

    A corporate orphan

So this character is one of the ugly neo-ethnic minorities and he was born into a culture that really hates neo-ethnics.  By 17 years old he was massive, hugely physical creature, wandering around an archeology. He was recruited and augmented by the corps for really dangerous work, say underwater demolitions.  Survival rate for his group was really low, but he made it. The corps did the math and decided it wasn’t worth it to keep him.  So they let him go, augmens and everything still intact but they aren’t paying him or feeding him any more.  The corps don’t care what happened to him and thanks to the universal non-compete clause that is hard wired to DNA now, no other corp can hire him.

So character-wise he is naïve kid, that has a very specific and narrow skill set, demolitions and underwater work (but we can change that to some other skill technical peripheral to combat), and no social skills to speak of. Then one of your character takes him under your wing or seek him out to exploit him, either way.  But RP wise this guy won’t know anything so all this cosmic era stuff will have to be explained to him as he goes along.  This will mean that a lot of the information dumps that would have to happen OCC (cause I assume your characters are up to speed) could be done in game.

    Option Three:

    The Hardened White Collar Criminal:

This guy is minority of some sort, seibertronian, neo-ethnic, what ever, and he is from a blue collar wage slave family. Against the odds he climbs the corporate ladder, gets to position of power and wealth, but he is evil, greedy and self serving.  Thus he makes enemies and while at the top he develops some project or product that is without a doubt unsafe untested and poorly thought out.  But he puts into action, with the companies approval of course and millions die and worse rival corps loose trillions. The corp council of 12 or whatever send him up the river and he is put away, racism plays a role. (they don't kill him cause, kiling back exec would be bad in the long run).  Prison provides him with a new skill set,  but somehow escapes or is let go.  Now he a fugitive, world famous, but thankfully a minority. Even the face scanners ignore (orcs or goblins or what ever). He lives on the fringers, looking to make one big score and move away, maybe off planet.  He still has  a vast knowledge of corp culture, he has a lot of chutzpah and is quick witted.  He is little tougher than the average guy the street but really non-combat character.  This guy could be planning the job, he nows the target he knows you guys from his past life, and he kind of posing as a Mr. Johnson.

how about a siebertronian that is hunter/sniper, tracker, survivalist type....so he was designed/raised to be custom guide for a wealthy hunting type. He would travel to the terrain ahead of his boss's hunting party, learn the lay of the land, assess hazards, coordinate with the security detail and then guide the expedition.  Recently he has developed a condition, his brain is developing a limit,  soon he will be entirely unable to make new memories..like a full usb stick.  This character concept takes on two conceits, one the AIs have not fully mastered human vision.  Humans actually take in very little information with our sense but our imagination and more importantly our memories fill in the process to allow us "see" the detail we are use percieving. This character will soon be unable to see new things, he will see the person in front of him, but he will see a remembered person.  This is extreme example of when everything reminds you of the one that broke your heart.  The second conceit is that there is underground or limited access/elities only siebertronian creation guild.  They make, raise, indoctrinate and train siebertronians to be servants.  "All the loyality of a dog, the imagintation of man and the reliability of a Toyota" (or some other brand).
  24. Re: Cosmic Era Game

My character (pending Scrasified approval, of course):

    João "Obutsu" Matos

João Matos was born in the burnt-out favelas of Novo São Paulo, depopulated during the wars of the Petroleum Era and rebuilt as desperately impoverished as ever. A moreno of mostly African descent, Matos and his family struggled to survive in the shadow of Novo São Paulo's massive arcos. When most of his friends were recruited into the various gangs that skirmish in the favelas, João was approached by a Japanese-Brazilian McDojo operator named Thiago Watanabe. Watanabe was an idealist reformer, trying to get kids out of gangs by teaching them Bushido discipline and self-defense. He convinced João to join, and the young man took an instant interest. He trained in the native Capoeira as well as Karate, Kenjutsu, and whatever else Watanabe offered. Within a few years, Watanabe promoted him to sensei and had him open another McDojo franchise studio.

The high-minded ideals of Watanabe shaped João, and he soon found himself attracted to other pieces of Nipponese culture. He began to style himself as a samurai, wearing hakama and a sword in the streets, driving the dishonorable biker gangs who bullied his streets. This drew unwanted attention from the favela's crime lords, who increased their raids and eventually put a hit on Matos. They burnt down his dojo, killing Thiago Watanabe for having the misfortune of being there at the wrong time. Devastated at the disaster he'd brought down on his own, João fled the favela for Greater Rio.

In Rio, João started taking odd jobs, mostly security work. He made a bit of a name for himself locally with his seemingly unbreakable honor and warrior ethos. João fell in with a zaitbatsu outfit, Tsurogi Industries - a small outpost group since the USSA had officially banned Nipponese imports. The outfit mostly hired natives as grunts, saving the higher rankings for its own. His Nipponese commanders thought João a bit of a bad joke, a mockery of true Bushido. They got to calling him "Obutsu", garbage, saying it's where he came from and where he belonged. Matos nonetheless continued his meditation and samurai sensibilities. His break came when the USSA launched a sting on the outfit and João personally saved the life of a Tsurogi executive, the mononymous Mr. Ken. Ken had João put onto his own personal squadron, a special operations team that did body guard work and whatever else needed done. Ken had João outfitted with the latest cybergear, turning the fighter into an even deadlier weapon. Though he mostly earned the respect of his Nipponese comrades, he couldn't shake the name Obutsu.

The silent war between the USSA and the zaibatsus raged on, eventually driving Tsurogi Industries' outpost out of Greater Rio. The crackdown came down quick and hard, as Tsurogi Industries was a small and easy-to-hit target. Mr. Ken and his executives were arrested in a raid, and his team was dispersed. Matos got out of Rio, heading back to Novo São Paulo where he could find refuge and maybe revenge. After settling in back home and reestablishing his dojo, João began working again, providing security and spec ops to various parties around the São Paolo arcos and beyond. He also began concentrating on parapsychic ability - something that had revealed itself in meditation, though João suspected something of it since his youth.

Perhaps this character could work a mentor to my corporate orphan type, what if that corporate orphan guy was born in Japan and is Japanese, but because his a neo-ethnic he is not wanted in Japan and is now legally denied return home. He was abandoned in south america, perhaps your character would take him in, mentor him some.

I like this idea the best out of all the ideas you've posted. Mixing with some of the other ideas you posted: He can have an interest in the NACA and BRR, ties to political groups that want to restore America (cough cough COBRA!!!! cough) There is no reason a sentient machine wouldn't have associations. He could see the ideal of 'murica where everyone was free and all men were created equal, and there was no discrimination just because someone was the wrong skin color, had the wrong reproductive bits, or just happened to have a reinforced polycarbonate skeleton overlaid with a neosilicone hydrostatic gel based skin.

The bits about maxing out his memory capacity is awesome. I would put in his case completely untrue but that's the fun thing about mental illness. He thinks his memory is almost maxed out (Futurama I believe had an episode like this, Farnsworth only had something like 7 inventions left in his mind so he time traveled back to caveman times to avoid depleting his brain) but it isn't. PM me and we can discuss details.

Finally, the abduction, reprogramming and abuse of Seibertronians is something that I will have to investigate because that is just too awesome a premise to not do something with.

I'd like your character to be a hardware hacker (someone has to bypass those semi-intelligent door locks and retrieve mission data) rather than Matrix style VR hacking. What sort of augmentation are you wanting to have? Cosmetic or something else?

For the siebertronian I would like to drop the political stuff from his personality/behavioral pallet (unless that is essential to the plot than I will joyfully roll with it) .  I would like to play him prior to his becoming strongly political.    I will pm you stuff about the mental disorder I have in mind, and for appearance I was thinking he could either be humanoid (though not human looking) to aid with dealing with people in his role as a servant/guide.  Or I was think he would be a smaller creature 60-80 lbs, spider like, designed to move through the wilderness is a manner similar to his prey.

A built in rifle, nothing fancy, a hunter's model (could drop this if I can't afford it)

    Low light and thermographic vision

    a sensitive artificial nose

a rigger type remote up link so he can communicate with his client's stereo tactic smart rifle, help his client make a shot

    mapping software

a built in set of carbon blades for cleaning animals

    Skill areas

    Cartography

    cooking

    etiquette training

    Fire Arms

    First aid

    Tracking

    Stealth

    Survival

    Knowledge Skills

Animal Lore/Hunting Lore he has hunting stories to tell

    Conservation Law

    Veterinary medicine

    Ecology

Okay. So I'll be the lock-pick of the group. Fine with me. Anyway, my augmen. Could I have a computer attached to my left arm? If not, maybe something that allows me to hack faster- like improved dexterity in my fingers, and faster speed with those fingers. That is, if keyboards still exist in the cosmic era.

We have failed to draw up any connections between our characters.  Perhaps I could ditch this siebertronian and play ceasar's mech pilot younger brother.
  32. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #32
Me having a younger brother... that could work. How would you want to do it? Do you want to have a negative relationship or positive? I could see the potential for both. We could have some dead parent, and we blame each other for the death of that parent, or we could do jobs together, or something.  I like the idea of having a negative, hate-hate relationship, and have Dozus be a sort of intermediary between us (and of course have the scene where one of us realizes he loves the other and sacrifices himself to save the other). I could take on the role of protective older brother. What were you thinking on all of this?
  33. Re: Cosmic Era Game

    #33
what does the GM think about this?

    #34

I like the idea of having a negative, hate-hate relationship, and have Dozus be a sort of intermediary between us (and of course have the scene where one of us realizes he loves the other and sacrifices himself to save the other)

    Do what now?

    Here's my thoughts:

    a) Seibertronian operative of NACA met Obutsu at a conference between NACA leaders and Tsurogi Industries. Tsurogi was trying to secure a contract arming NACA, Seibertronian was there as a rep and Obutsu as security. Someone either doublecrossed the other and Obutsu had to guard Tsurogi reps from armed NACA assassins (making Seibertronian & Obutsu on not so friendly terms, or a crackdown on NACA dragged Seibertronian & Obutsu into a firefight (in which case they're on the same side). Perhaps Hacker also worked for NACA at one point cracking data.

    b) I don't think all knowing one another is essential, per se. Two characters might know each other and have one stranger, or one knows the other two separately (A knows B and C, but B doesn't know C). Or they've all been hired by the same outfit for whatever reason and have no history yet. No need to create convoluted backstories for convoluted backstories' sake. If we all play engaging, interesting characters, they'll interact in engaging, interesting ways, regardless of prior interactions.

    Ecology

I am seeing (and I know you said humanoid but not human) Muldoon, the big game hunter from Jurassic Park. Your original chassis purpose would have been in maintaining an ecological creche, one running to produce game to hunt. Unlike the other 'bots assigned to the station, you woke up one day and realized that you had a greater purpose than checking machinery (basic skill) and riding along as a bodyguard for fat rich people interested in riding out in an *gasp* automobile to shoot a live animal.

As for everyone knowing each other or having history is fine, but not necessary.

I don't know about the rest of that back story, not I will take the name Muldoon.

The two biggest factors to playing a Seibertronian are what your original purpose was. Seibertronians aren't intentionally built, they just sort of happen in production runs of sufficiently advanced androids, gynoids, and mechanoids. The second is raison d'etre, what is your seibertronian's central axis of existence? (you don't have to post it, but it is something that defines the machine life just as eating and mating define organic life.

Also, it's fine if the team doesn't fit well together. It could be more fun if it doesnt. You are going to be the first team that a newbie fixer will have put together, and it will have been on short notice

Is there a free spot for a rogue Echo?
    I'd fill that spot nicely!
