Contemplation Time
#1Things that have been tossing around my head for awhile. The continuance of 3.0 has made me realize that I don't need more to concentrate on than mastering this site and mastering it well. There is still a TON to do on it and once it is done, it will require more so I will always be busy and it will remain my priority. I just have too much damn fun building.
On that note I have the following domains available:
HOSTINGCITADEL.COM
READPOSTPLAY.COM
RPGCITADEL.COM
MUROMETZ.COM :) Yes, I do
These are domains I got long ago and still keep. My point?
I want to do something with them!
What to do with them is what I want your help with.
The main idea I have swirling around them is that I want something that I don't have to spend hours and hours coding. strolen.com is my baby and I want to keep it that way. So that, in my mind, limits those sites to some preestablished software that can run itself. But we want them to also compliment The Citadel or at least be useable by us in a different way. Or not I suppose, but I still want them aimed at RPing I think. The domain names call for that anyway.
So my couple thoughts are:
Link Farm: Been talking about that for a long time now.
http://www.pligg.com/about.php
It started as a digg.com open source php clone and looks like it has a lot of stuff for overkill. Was just looking at a place people (including us) could "digg" our stuff in maybe. As we find articles over the web, throw them in there.
http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/demo/
http://www.cn-software.com/en/cncat/
For just a more simple link directory.
We could have a wiki, a blog site for anybody's use, etc....
Or we could do nothing of course which is just as well. Just tossing some thoughts out there as I didn't have enough time or concentration to code but had internet. The pligg thing really interests me though. Article listing and even links I would guess. Have to look more at the software and maybe install it just to see what it does. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#2Well... we did want to have a link farm at some point. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#3Actually, Strolen did something to this effect: check http://rpgcitadel.com/ and find the small, experimental link farm.
If anyone wants to try their hand at it, feel free (we can make you user accounts if you want). What would be really useful are a couple (dozen) of links posted here and there, to allow us to see how that thing actually performs. This might be THE link farm, or it might not. Can't know without trying.
Strolen: would it be meaningful and/or easily doable to connect Citadel user accounts to that place? We could allow all our users to go there and add links as they see fit. That could create some actual growth. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#4In this case it is very experimental and with the forums still in beta and pligg just going 1.0. There are a couple scripts that others wrote that make it workable, but they aren't 100%.
For now, need to treat it as an entirely different site. I still can't even find another theme of that version so I can change the layout. Just haven't had time to mess with a custom theme. Citadel still takes any spare time I get for that kind of stuff.
We shall see, it is growing on me a little. Added screenshots of the webpage the other day pretty easily and the templates are fairly easy to customize. It uses smarty, which I hate, but at least it is themeable easy enough. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#5Actually, it is becoming popular, since it has attracted the first spammers posting links to dvd and converter tools and cheap hotels! Woohoo!
I've deleted the links and disabled the users. Sorry, jfjj007 and raunak. Had to be.
Also see now, that there is a bit more material. Now I wonder - what if we'd just threw the link out to our community and looked what happens? If it's meant to be big and separate from us, then I guess a separate userbase is alright. If someone feels up to it, we can let them administrate it.
Opinions? -
Re: Contemplation Time
#6That would work for me. They can help decide if we are going to keep it as well.
Wish I had time to at least change the colors or something though. ;) Plain and ugly right now. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#7Okay then, if there are no objections, I'll announce it in a day or so. -
RPGCitadel link farm
#8Found a better theme for now so it isn't so plain and ugly.
Much nicer than the old one I must say! -
Re: Contemplation Time
#9A mixed blessing, I must say. The dark top is better, but the yellow-blue voting boxes look broken and shrill. The menu is alright, the links under it look just thrown in. Gotta keep looking, but this is ultra-low priority for now.
Posting the message, let's see what our folks have to say. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#10I just had to get rid of the plainess of the default. Looks better in ubuntu. -
Re: Contemplation Time
#11I think I'll use a 10-in-10 sort of challenge to add at least a few links into it. Anyone willing to try? -
Re: Contemplation Time
#12I tried to start with Moon's list. Amazing how many links are already dead. Are we such a short lived hobby?
I will start tomorrow on mine. There is enough to try a 10 links every day for 10 days. :)
