Any quick idea or thought that you have that you think is cool, interesting, or maybe somthing we might like to do.

No commenting on ideas. Post the idea and move on.

If there is any debate, make a new thread with the idea in the title. An admin will link the idea to the thread.

If you have an example of your idea, please do link to it or attach an image!

A file of art and photographs that might inspire or inform games:  Pictures of armor, weird weapons, portraits from long ago, architectural drawings of castles, temples, and other places.

Developing characters from game rules:  Start with the pure stats and come up with different ways they could be interpreted to make a cool/logical character from the stat "skeleton".

"Adventure in a box" generator.  Randomly select one item from each category.  Might jumpstart some adventure/campaign ideas and get older subs some more attention.

More random generators, ones of widespread utility, such as a "Random Antagonist Generator" that produces a variety of random goals, personalities, modus operandi, and other characteristics.

Global history page, where everything that recently happened is displayed, with all the history. So combined Newest  Comments / Submissions / Updated(those with comment), for standard as for Advice Requested and Stub submissions (plus a few others for admin-y purposes), Quests and Idea Seeds. One page to see what's new; the more detailed pages would go into a separate menu or tab or something.

A wiki-type of open submission that any member can add to and modify. Included in this idea is some sort of rollback system to allow for fixing damage that idiots or computer malfunctions happen to cause.

Props to Scras for the original idea, specific as it might have been.

    I second this motion!

When the design will be rebuilt, somehow change the format of replies to comments. Sadly have no idea on how... they are fine for chatting purposes, but if they are to be used as a part of the submission, they get ugly.

Search Functions that automatically search title and summary and subject.
Search function that does that for a specific region.

Autosave the submission you are currently working on every 15 seconds or so. (in the background - ajax to the rescue again)

    HELLS YES!!  Please!

Autosave is an incredible idea, I have no idea how many times I have lost original material this way.

A lot of replies to comments stand unanswered for a few years, a system that shows new replies to your comments and new comments on your subs would be nice. Youtube has a similair system once logged in.

I'd like to wish for a clean forum design without any design to speak of, much like the original SMF theme.

Currently I am using the minimalist main site design along with the SMF forum design.

This makes it safe for me to browse from work, but unfortunately it also destroys much of the site functionality, like linking back from the forum to the main site, the forum shoutbox and such.

What I am trying to say is this:
Could you modify the SMF basic design so that it includes links back to the main site, as well as the shoutbox and other neat features?
  16. Persons age on their profile?

    #16
This would allow users to see at a glance how old a particular Strolenite is, making it easier to accurately judge their submissions based on their age rather then immediate content. (I would hope we would be more gentle and supportive of a 12 year olds shortcomings/spelling errors when posting adventures and concepts then we would a college student gamer, perhaps being less eager to harshly judge the piece and provide advice/point out errors before giving it a vote of 1-2 and tearing it apart.)

Granted they could lie about their age easily enough, but there's not much point to the deception when honestly will get one treated more fairly)

  17. Re: Brainless Brainstorming

    #17
I would think that would have to be something the person in question would choose to or not to reveal.
For reference, there is a Strolenite character sheet forum thread where people have voluntarily put up this info, though I can't find it right now. Will post it when I find it.

True, but having the option there woudl be helpful for those that chose to. (Or just an age range maybe? 14 or  under, 16-18, 19-25, 26+ etc..
  19. Re: Brainless Brainstorming

There are two problems that I can see with this idea. Firstly, for reasons of privacy (the internet can be a frightening place), some people would not want to put their ages on their profiles. I don't know how many would take this view, but it could be enough that it would make the whole thing pretty much useless.
Secondly, and more importantly, if the author of a post is twelve and has grammar and spelling appropriate to that age, then yes, it may be nice to be able to mollycoddle them some. However, we shouldn't need to see what age someone is to give them only constructive criticism and a grace period (such as I had, and needed, when I first joined). The way that the system is set up is that everything is rated based on how good it is, not on how good it is compared to the age of the person writing it. If this were the case, then any twelve year old who wrote as well or had as good ideas as a twenty something year old, would have much higher ratings. The system is not infallible, but it is what we have.

NEW IDEA: Can we please have more than 1 Advice Requested? Eg. I have a Codex and a bunch of Scrolls that I want ppl to add to but I also have a sub that I want feedback on before releasing it into a normal sub. Currently, I can only put the Codex into Advice Requested and all the Scrolls sit in In Work(public) and also all my future standalone subs will have to go straight out if I don't want to displace the Codex.

Also seconding some of the other ideas proposed here: 1) notification system on new comments to your subs; 2) combined Newest Comments / Submissions / Updated page and 3) Wiki type of open sub that can be used as a collaborative output of all Stronelites (thinking of my Posting Advice Codex (http://www.strolen.com/content.php?node=5685))

Aside: Should be for brainstorming, not debating. Post your ideas and debate them elsewhere.

No idea is a bad idea!!! We may not use it but it will cause thought and perhaps change something else.

Maybe a link to the I, Strolenite thread on the forums?

Hey, since we have done away with sword (which I don't understand, since Strolen loved them so much he used subliminal messaging to get us all to agree with him. LONG LIVE THE FLAMES OF THE CITADEL. Hey... Can we go back to flame? That would be old-school fresh) Oh right, my original idea was this: Different quality shield icons for higher or lower average votes. Like, a sub with a 1.5 vote would have a a shield icon in very rough shape, possibly burn and missing pieces. While a solid 5 might have a shining golden shield with sparkles and glitter. Get what I'm saying? (OR WE CAN GO BACK TO FLAMES!) Just a thought.

It will be odd for me to say, but I think the main page needs some graphics to spice it up.  Traffic to me seems rather slow as of late.

I have plenty of pictures of llamas! If you can find artists you like on elfwood or elsewhere, ask them if we can show there stuff and I will set it up. I am graphically challenged which is why I don't even try.

Idea: A small icon at the upper corner of subs that will turn red if the user has been inactive for 6+ months (as in not visited the site) and green if they've been around within the last 6 months or less? (or change their name from the normal color to Red if they've been inactive?)

I thought of this the other day after commenting on a sub with several paragraphs of feedback and ideas on how to expand and improve it, only to later find the creator hasn't visited Strolens in over 3 years.  :?

Being able to at a glance see if a sub I'm reading is authored by someone likely to read my comment would help me better shape my commentary to either target the creator with direct feedback on how the sub could be further improved, or target the the general audience my insight on how the sub could work in campaigns, plot hook concepts etc..

In short, it'd save me the time of leaving a lot of constructive criticism on sub that the author is never likely to even take note of. I'd rather put that constructive criticism effort into a sub where the author will see it, and perhaps benefit from the feedback. For subs I find comment worthy with an inactive author I'd put more general comments fellow Strolenites would benefit from.

I figure others would find this helpful as well for much the same reason.

Aye indeed, and honestly I'd suggest cutting out the barbarian hordes ability to comment all together. From what I've seen 99% of the horde comments are either spam, attempts to start flame wars, or meaningless drivel. If they want to contribute let'm make an account like everyone else I say..

I will second val, love the active/inactive user designation idea!!

Very excellent idea. Hoping to get the email notification upon comments to posts so perhaps we can lure some long time gone folk back with a notification of a comment or two.

This idea is very simple to put together and is on the list!

I gotta confess, the forum theme is not good. The main site theme is A-OK, but the forum theme kinda fails. It is the dark brown thingie to the right and left. It gnaws at my soul, tears down all that is good, leaving only darkness behind.

Cold, cold darkness. Where is global warming when you need it, I say? Not to the left and right of this textarea at least.
  33. Re: Brainless Brainstorming

Yeah . . . I agree with AG on that one.  It's been grating at me since the changeover, but I didn't want to sound like I was whining.  Perhaps if the brown was cropped up a bit higher -- say, just behind the header or no lower than the topic bar -- it could work.
  34. Re: Brainless Brainstorming

    #34
Forum is a victim of no desktop and lack of better themes to easily customize. Picked this one because it was one of the few where I could slap the header on and only had minimum changes need to the rest to have close colors to the rest. It was forced when I had to upgrade the site when the "darkness" fell upon us.

Will update whenever I get a chance though now that I know we have issues with it.

Added the thingy to show login activity for the member.

You can see the last login in their profile but now there is a red for over 6 months and a green for under in the submission left sidebar.

For those that are logged in only.

Don't think I ever saw the background look like that until now. Very odd. I think I made it the full background to save our souls till the next upgrade.

Did a flame in the forum. If you find a different flame that would be better, would be happy to replace it.

The status should say that, along with the color - I needed to dig here to know that.
