    He's such an ass

But he can't stay away, can he? This time, its somewhat disturbing. He randomly appears again for no reason other than some make believe gripe on some ancient comment. Or something.

Got up on the wrong side of the bed, and figured, let me go fuck around on Strolens again...have they acknowledged how fucking awesome I am yet? No? Bah! I'll just have to be a pompous dick again!

He just wants to be told that he's awesome over and over again. Its a cry for attention really, like the guy on the roof who just won't jump.

Yep, getting old. Would be nice if he would get over his insecurities but it seems like he needs validation....but only the validation he expects and anything less is unacceptable. Lucky for us, in his own mind, he isn't immature or petty.

I think I sunk the battleship with RGTraynor. Maybe I was a bit blunt with him but he was an ass. Good riddance. Here is is final reply.

Scras had a great reply of only a few lines that made the point. But you know how I tend to go on sometimes. Here is the last of RG.

    Mike -

I don't regret taking down all my submissions, nor the opinion I have for the way things apparently haven't changed in the year since I've attempted a serious check in - as long as Kassy gets to pull retaliatory voting and then to snarl "Prick" on the shoutbox when called on it - but I know the Law Of The Hammer was intended to prevent discussion of voting.  I see my comment on Kassy' 30 Hammers submission was pulled, just as I went there to pull it myself; I rather wish her own snark at my voting had been pulled as well.

Be that as it may, that wasn't the spot for a personal attack on voting, and I should not have made one.

    ~ bob

Bob, thanks for the note. I am going to be brutally honest with you here. I don't play games so if you ask, or I see, I give you my straight opinion and so here it is.

I understand that is the way you feel, but there haven't been any real issues for awhile. If you would have came in with a better attitude and just started over, we probably could have made a new beginning without any drama. I guarantee we would have moved on with open arms like nothing happened before. Unfortunately, you came back with the assumption that you will be wronged again, forced a bad situation and comment, then then looked for things to be offended at.

The comment you pointed out from Kassy was from back in June. So you carried all the old baggage and negative attitudes and started right back up from where you left off without even giving us a chance. You spent, what, maybe a couple hours, maybe a day, on the site, found some old wounds to reopen and posted a rude comment. What exactly did you expect from all that? Kassy is more than willing to move on and her "prick" comment (that I didn't see) was probably in response to your latest jab that really came out of nowhere. What attitude to you expect her to have towards you?

And yes, we have discussed the situation with Kassy as well because we were all upset that you left. You are an awesome addition to the community and we would love to keep you. However, when you are so easily offended, this place might not be a good fit unfortunately. With few exceptions (and I will think you will agree despite your experience with Kassy) that we will give you honest feedback from our personal POVs. This may not always match with your expectations but they are our opinions for what they are worth. Assign as much value as you wish to each of them (and that can be a challenge to many, you don't have to agree with opinions but you do have to accept them), as most of us know that not all our stuff will be great in everybody's eyes.

I know you think you have been wronged by this site, but if you honestly look at the situation I think you may find that you are more than responsible for the latest reaction to your reappearance. We can only control ourselves, not other users. Issues happen and people have disagreements, but I am personally offended that you lump the entire site into a negative interaction you have with one person. I think we treated you quite fairly through everything.

I appreciate the apology for the comment you made. Despite that, right now, you are being viewed as the disruptive one based on your latest return. Everybody on this site has the ability to move on and forget, very quickly, but it takes a bigger person to start fresh and ignore some wrongs in the past.

I think we have a lot to offer you on the site and I think you have a TON to offer us. If you don't think you can handle some criticism, then so be it. I absolutely wish you the best in your creative writings and truly hope you find a community that you can share your great ideas with!

Ahem.  I didn't find any "old wounds to reopen."  I came back, started poking my head around, and one of the very first things I ran into was Kassy complaining about me not giving her the high votes she wanted, about me writing a less-than-praisefilled note about a sub of hers, and from the timestamps, immediately going over to my two highest-vote subs and slapping a "1" vote on them.  Her comment, the alleged "Law of the Hammer" notwithstanding, went up months ago, and until this weekend, it was still there.  If objecting to something you proclaimed to be against site rules or to her throwing obscenities at me on the shoutbox is "forcing a bad situation," sorry: that's blame-the-victim bullshit.

What attitude did I expect her to have towards me?  A mature one.  Don't you think?  One that doesn't lead to retaliatory voting, one that doesn't break site rules in snarking about voting, and one that doesn't lead to hurling obscenities on the shoutbox.  Don't you think?

(Should maybe I have dealt with this in June?  Well, as it happens, I wasn't here to notice it.  How do you figure I should have?)

As far as being "thin-skinned" goes, I'll be just as blunt: are you fucking kidding me?  This didn't start because I went into a tizzy fit over someone's negative comments on my subs; this garbage started because, in separate incidents, Silveressa and Kassy went into tizzy fits over MY comments on THEIR subs.  They both promptly launched into retaliatory voting, as you well know, and I had - and have - a problem with that.  No one had any comments about their "immaturity."

My last thought ... you're upset and offended that I've dissed the site?  Errr ... didn't you just tell me that the ability to take negative feedback is part of the deal here?  That thin-skinned isn't a good fit for the site?  That honest feedback from personal POVs is okay, whether or not they match our expectations?  Did you truly mean that?

There's no need to reply; I won't be reading it.

Very stubborn he is. Oh well. So be it. The Citadel carries on. I don't think your pm was too blunt or harsh at all. His "last thought" doesn't even make sense.

    PM'ed Strolen this.

On a completely unrelated note, has anyone else noticed that we have lost ALL of our European members? Strolen is currently the lone European Strolenite :)

There's an occasional Moonlake appearence, but she's from Asia.

    "whats up with that?!"

manfred, AG, Echo, MJS, dark_dragon and ummm, other Europeans must return. I will attempt to send out a mass pm summon them all  to return to the Citadel. I mean, Halloween is almost here for chrissakes. PRIME-TIME STROLEN.COM TIME!!!

    And where is MoonHunter?

    "whats up with that?!"

Well, I got picked up for the USMC Leadership course. Semper Fi. However, the class I got put in starts on Tuesday...in Okinawa....so to get there in time I have to leave tomorrow. I love when a great plan comes together! (sarcasm)

So I had 8 hours at work to do everything necessary to make myself fully eligible for the class and get tickets. Was a huge pain in the ass and I missed the annual 12K run to the Tower of Pisa race which pissed me off even more!!

Not sure how internet will be but will let you know what I get there. Will be there till December 14th.

    Laters!!

    Congrats! Semper Fi indeed!!

Mmmm, Okinawa, birthplace of Karate and some amazing Japanese food.

    Good luck and good hunting!!

FYI. Finishing up this Marine crap. Graduate the class next Wednesday then flying home and then promotion test on 19 December. So I am in hyper stress mode for a bit and not online much even though I tend to leave my computer open whenever I am around. Studying and keeping busy. So if I miss something I should be seeing, PM me, facebook me or email me to get my attention.

I used to have a kids joke book that had a question that was something like "What kind of insect scares people?" and the answer was "A Boo Bee" Great kids riddle book. Made me think of that when Muro had his very inappropriate outburst that totally offended me.

Strolen, I can't find your EuroStrolenConPaloozaFest thread, but...

AG will be in Amsterdam mid-March for a Black Hat Hacker's Convention (? I think that's what he called it). So we got to chatting about a possible StrolenMeet there during that week. Thoughts?
  18. Re: Admin Chatter

    #1138
Hmmm. I will need to know the dates. I have something that I can't miss from 8-about the 15 March for work. Unfortunately, it is a trial for one of my folks so if the trial goes long I would be doubly screwed as I would be stuck there regardless of any personal plans.

Too scary for me to commit to unless it was late March.
  19. Re: Admin Chatter

    #1139
I believe it was "mid" March...12-15th or 13th-18th or something....So i guess that doesn't work. I'll find out the exact dates

Sorry I haven't been around for the past couple weeks. Got a bad case of stomach flu and has been kicking my ass for 2 weeks now. After work, all I want to do is collapse. I have watched all of season 1 of Legend of the Seeker though and it isn't horrible at all. A little better than Hercules and Xena I think. The fact that I really enjoyed the books helps too.

Before I disappeared I had been working on the updated site css and didn't get really far, but had a start.

http://strolen.com/main4 is the in work main page
http://strolen.com/viewing4/Bizzare_Life-Forms_Challenge  is the in work viewing page. Wanted to fix the codex/scroll but didn't quite get that far yet.
http://strolen.com/viewing4/Flawed_Potions is a decent example of "suggested subs" and playing with how to list those

(if you notice, just add a "4" after "viewing" to see the alternate rendering.

Left side is more or less redone. Not sure about putting the author status on the right though (skull and activity status) as the left column goes pretty far and messes with shorter posts. But just playing and I like the setup much better.

Main change is the menu, it is pure bootstrap now instead of adding all the extra CSS to render it separate. Might be better for mobile crap too. When you shrink the screen it collapses and is click to extend. Still a lot of work to do.

Just tossing this out there as some activity from me.

Still trying to polish my location subs from SE's thread to post but I just don't have the patience/energy for it.

Also have to go on a short trip through the weekend so will be out of it till next week sometime at the earliest.

  33. Re: Admin Chatter

Apparently there are some authors who have been completely deleted but there are still submissions that tie into them.

    eg: Raven.
  34. Re: Admin Chatter

    #1154
That is no bueno. Have no idea how that would have happened....

If you know the id of the author or the submission that is missing the author, I could probably eventually find the data to replace it...
  35. Re: Admin Chatter

    #1155
There are gaps in the author records in the database. For example of rave, the author id in the content is 518, which does not exist in the members tables.

If we had a 'dead author' author entry, I would just map these orphan subs as I find them.

I found the sub via random unvoted and got eaten by a grue when I followed the link. Checking the DB for that submission showed a link to a missing author.

Well, I went to a backup just over two years old and I didn't find raven. Did one of those unmatched queries for users with more than 0 XP and found 48 others in similar circumstances.

Whipping through some of the more recent ones to see if it was an early purge of some sort that went wrong.

As I have time, I will dig up the older archives and see if I can find them. I don't like not having them. Otherwise, just log them in as Barbarian Horde, -1

(for reference so I don't have to redo the query)

TOP SECRET, BUT GIVE ME YOUR PRIVATE THOUGHTS!!!

From Johnn at roleplayingtips.com. We have been going back and forth the last couple days on forums and some other technical stuff on how we work the Citadel. This is the latest that still has me gasping for air.

Read it once, then read it again. Then read it one more time and let me know your thoughts.

    I have two forum needs.

First is for Gamer-Lifestyle. The WordPress-based forum is a bit mickey mouse. I will look at SMF base install as a potential solution.

How is the admin side of SMF? Are updates easy? Is security good or have you had to create a bunch of custom scripts to stop new hacks?

The  second need is for Roleplaying Tips. I'm starting a paid monthly subscription service called GMMastery. Subscribers will get a new ebook each month, their own newsletter, contests, and I was hoping, their own forum with quests and events and interaction with me. Issue #1 should debut in October.

    a) Would you be interested in spinning off a forum for me? What would you charge?

    b) Or maybe instead, there could be a level-up power-combo if Roleplaying Tips partnered with Strolen's somehow.

Here are some thoughts on that. Warning, I'm trying to grow a business here, so many of my interests are commercial.

We've each got a thriving community. I'd make Strolen's-RPT my official community and drive traffic and members ongoing to the site.

I'd want to do regular quests and turn those into commercial ebooks. There'd need to be some legal stuff so participants would know and agree to the content rights (non-exclusive, non-expiring, worldwide, print and digital). But they could be listed as contributors and get pro writing credits, plus a discount on the book they contributed to.

I already have a process for this, and with the forums we could make it even more efficient.

I have a partner for the GMMastery ebooks subscription, and I'd want to bring him in on this. A three way split between you, me and him.

My vision is to replicate the Paizo subscription service. Keep growing a base of monthly paid subscribers, and have three or so subscription options:

Game content  - NPCs, items, maps, traps, etc.
GM content - tips, how-to tutorials, hooks, etc.
Adventure paths - five room dungeons (I'll explain later)
World - hexcrawl (I'll explain later)
All - maybe an uber subscription with the full buffet

A lot of the content will come from community members, and I feel they'll be happy to participate because quests are fun, they get their names in the credits and we'll give them a discount. Plus, we are taking on the costs for art, editing, assembly and layout, and publishing, etc.

I could see producing one 15 page (~5000 word) PDF a week. At four a month, a $10 subscription is reasonable.

I'd also like to open a store on Strolen's. We'd get paid from small commissions and private commission deals. And we'd hand-pick stuff so it would be just great items in there, not a catalog of junk or only new releases of random stuff.

And I'd like a place to run regular events. Some might be quests, but other fun community stuff too. I've exceeded my capacity to run stuff for Roleplaying Tips through email. I just get too much and don't have enough time to answer it all. So I'm being held back on running more community events. But forums would alleviate that and open up time again to do events.

So my top two requirements right now are being able to turn user generated content into commercial books with proper permissions and legal in place, and being able to run events ongoing to make my/our community a rocking happy fun place.

If you are interested, I know you'll need to harmonize this with your community, and I'd be very sensitive to the existing culture. I'm not interested in turning Strolen's into a money-grabbing site. The community would stay at the forefront.

I'd use the Roleplaying Tips newsletter to drive subscription sales mostly, taking the heat off your site for doing all the sales pitches. Roleplaying Tips just hit 10,000 subscribers last week. I'm getting 10 new subscribers a week. It's the perfect marketing vehicle for us.

Strolen's would just need to be the host and the tech for paid memberships. And a place where you get cool badges and awards, make friends, and live and breath RPG.

I'm open to ideas, feedback, counter-proposals on this.

Let me know what you think.

    Very interesting...

Not sure what i think other than that yet.  Ill read it a few more times.
  40. Re: Admin Chatter

    I should be in bed.

My thoughts have been running this way. First, how can we say no? And I do say "we" because this is as much your site, and every author's, as it is mine. But Johnn has always been on the forefront of doing things for the community and his comments make me feel that we can maintain the integrity of the site and what we have accomplished. The commercialization seems very focused and leaves what we have intact. Authors would have to specifically choose their license, as they do now, so they are still in full control of their content. And there is really no second part.

We have all discussed at one time or another how great it would be to grow this community. I can't think of a better match for us than those subscribed to his mailing list.

So, I am wanting to travel down this road of discussion and see where it takes us. However, if there is some major discomfort with this from you all, then I will reevaluate. I didn't give him an answer yet, obviously, I told him I would need to talk to you all and get your thoughts, but I am going to continue the conversation and see what more comes up.

The elephant in the room: money.

Johnn is good about excellent prizes and such when he runs contests. If the Citadel is going to take a hand it in, I would feel obligated to return much of it. There would be added costs for better offsite backups, time involved in coding and such, but the kicker is the content and we are nothing without it. So we will have serious conversations on where the income will go...at least the Citadel's share. There are lots of options. But that will come down the line and there are A LOT of maybes. But don't think for a moment that I don't have all our best interests in mind! For me, if you aren't involved in the decisions then there are no decisions. It has always been like that and always will be.

So anyway, that is my initial thought.
