V2.1+ Want List
#2I would like to be able to check postings in the forum based on a time period, like the submissions can be checked fir the last six hours, 24 hours, last week, etc. I have a stupid computer and I really like being able to click the button and look at what has been added since my last visit. Sometimes, my computer decides that my last visit was 1-2 minutes earlier.
thanks -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#3I love the Idea Seeds need some love idea! As of now, they serve little to no aesthetic purpose -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#4They are quite happily randomly inhabiting the bottom of every page. That was the original intention of them, everything else we manage to do with them will be a bonus. :) Whatever that will end up being. ;) -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#5Linkomania
Firstly, we could need an easier way to link stuff between the forums and the Main Citadel, in both directions.
Second, there is quite a chaos surrounding the already existing links...
- there are links to stuff from the old Citadel
- there are links to the newer system of submissions (a single ID for all posts)
- there are links with the rpgcitadel.com domain
- there are links with the IP of the last move (or are there more?)
- and then there are the new links
Most of them were hard-coded, most of them are not visible/used anymore... but it is not rare that we can't find an older linked resource. I don't ask for a quick and immediate solution :) - it may not be even possible to code everything, there is really no high priority on this. It is more of a warning to the future if we change the linking system again (which I doubt), or there is again some swapping in the domain name (more likely, for many reasons). -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#6Actually, all those links should work still too. :) If not, let me know.
That is why I created the [linking way] so the site can make the link and not the user. Just have to slowly convert them as we see them. Same with most of those damn special characters that I can't get a reliable way to script them away. I have tried a few things and there is nothing I trust running on every single submission yet. :(
The original links in the v1.0 format should shoot you to the new one. I made autoforwarding pages to accept the old links in case anybody offsite still linked to a submission the old way.
Links are also too variable in how they are written to get a solid script to rip through them and do the conversions. Probably still possible, but..... -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#7Well, throwing this back out again:
The 'Personal pride' type list for the profile - A way to say, "I'm really pleased with the awy this one came out." -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#8Ahhh, personal favorites of your own submissions....I like it!!!!!!
Somewhat quick and easy to implement as well. Good one!
On hold, see discussion Author's Own Favorites in this board. -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#9The Ultron Device
I think it might be kind of cool to have some sort of tally/score associated with our names like the swords, but a reflection of our combined post scores.
Somthing like
FantasyGuy
yadda yadda, level stuff, level swords
x/y
x = average of all submission votes/scores
y = number of submissions
Mine would be something like 4.2/211
-
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#10Spellcheck for the whole submission.
For the lazy asses among us, that don't want to push another button and preview another text after each post and each update, there could be a way to spellcheck the WHOLE submission - so including scroll comments - on one click. Of course, it is enough if it's a passive feature (no on-line correcting), but you would be able to see all the typos or strange words in your whole submission at a glance. Hint: if there's too much of typoes, rewrite it. -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#11A way to get random #'s in chat, so that we can do stuff like roll a d3 for kicks and giggles. To my knowledge there isn't anyway, but I know it can be done. -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#12Add a link to Unvoted by Me (or similar) so we can see what link's we have not voted on yet.
If there is one, sorry :) -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#13That is a good one, valadaar, that I agree with!
Been debating about the die rolls. Probably not flashchat, but perhaps in main Citadel chat. Super simple, just need the minutes to do it. :) -
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#14It would also be nice to link to sections within a sub, though Stubs could be used to similar effect.
-
Re: V2.1+ Want List (in work)
#15We can't get around the missing submission dates on scrolls, and scroll replies. Finding a new reply in long scrolls is tedious at best.
*sigh* We need the date again. Changed colour is not enough (and after another login or visit of the forums you don't get even that). -

Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#17The Shoutbox Archive starts you out on page 1. While it isn't much of a hassle to click onto page 690 something, I'm lazy and don't like having to do that when I try and find out what others talked about in my absence. It'd be really awesome if it popped you onto the last page automatically. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#18OOP:
-Advantages: Safe coding practices, reusability, abstracting your code away from the source (classes that talk with background services, classes, classes, classes! Classes and objects are all you ever see, because that XML parser is hidden within a class that you use and that SQL query seems like a class and, darn it, that is just what the socket connection does too!)
-Disadvantages: Speed, forgetting where other reusable objects lie, so you make a new implementation (code bloat... I work in a program with 350.000 to 400.000 lines of code, it is fairly common in such big programs). -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#19Fonts in subs? I personally hate big blocs of italizied text, but would lie other ways to set text apart.
-
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#20Good thought. Only thing currently is tt for typewriter text which doesn't do a whole lot for any mood trying to be developed. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#21Well, for those robots and AIs it sets the mood pretty well. :)
Yay for a more available fonts! -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#22One thing I'd like to see is "Comments on Author's submissions". I don't tend to get very many comments except right after I release something, but I'd love to see the most recent comments on my work. I'm sure others would like that capability as well.
(I'm seeing how you could impliment it too..) -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#23Don't hid your implementation thoughts. How/where do you want it to happen? -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#24
Spellcheck for the whole submission.
Use Firefox or get the Google tool bar. They both correct spelling as you type. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#25Nahh, I meant a spellcheck for the whole thing. Too often I don't bother with spellchecking a sub (not to speak of the older ones we had before spellchecking was built in, or all the comments and scroll comments). So I just thought it could be nice to check a whole page at once... but I guess there's tool for that, too. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#26Strolen: I'm just seeing a rough way that it might be implimented using generic function calls. I've got no experience with php or java, so I can't give much more than a rough idea.
Basically what I'm thinking is that you can have a private button on the profile page that searches through all of your submissions and checks to see which ones have the last 'X' comments. 'X' could possibly be user-supplied, or we could go with the last 20 comments on your submissions (since 20 seems to be the number of choice around here).
Alternatively, we could avoid needless complexity and flag every new comment unread until an author reads it, then just bring up a list of unread comments. This might get excessive, but since it would be limited to an author's submissions only, it would only reach triple digits with people like Moon and CP, who have more submissions than a lake has water.
Make sense, or does it seem needlessly complex? -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#27Don't know about generic function calls...
Twenty is the number of subs displayed on listing pages, and you can edit it in your profile.
Given that, we could simply add into the profile a link like 'Comments on My Submissions' or something with all comments to your subs, sorted by time - and so you would be able to go into any depth desired, twenty or twohundred.
How about that? -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#28I think that 20 is hardcoded in that list.
But you might try, under "User Links" the New Since Last Visit.
I haven't used it and don't know how well it works. But that, in theory, should show you all the posts/comments you may have missed.
If not, it would be easy enough to put together though. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#29I read the following article and it is extremely convincing.
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html
Looking at my own code and the thoughts I had about it paralleled much of what he said. We have spent a lot of time bug tracking and fixing and everytime you all find something, the site becomes that much more polished. Starting from scratch would most likely induce a whole new era in bugs.
My code is nowhere near as complex as the larger systems out there and while there are sections that will take me a little bit to 'remember' I am certain it isn't all that bad. It will just involve some careful rewrites to the new style that I want while keeping all the functionality that is available.
I think, overall, it will speed up everything as well. By adopting this philosophy I can start on things immediately. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#30Hey, it does sound really convincng!
Keep up the bugfixing, do a couple of changes if it makes the job easier, but it is true: do not start from scratch.
P.S. I was stuck on that website for over an hour. Darn. Good reading. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#31Join his newsletter so you get updates, then read a couple articles each time you visit. He writes well and I find him spewing a lot of solid reasoning about software and its developement. Probably the only "blog" type thing I read. Know any others? -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#32Couple, but none on software stuff really. :( -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#33Very good article! I emailed it to the Chief Technical Officer of my firm. I agree too. As for software blogs: There are tons and tons of them. Most of them include lots of code in the article though and are more in the format "How to access metadata in Microsoft Office Sharepoint Services 2007" and "Three things you didn't know about Browser Helper Objects" 0_o
Joel (on Software) is skilled but the bastard made COM which is what I languish with on a daily basis, so he should probably be shot. :p
Typical other blogs:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ - Blogs by Microsoft developers. Not your poison I take it but useful for me in my job. Of these blogs http://blogs.msdn.com/tomarcher/ is very useful for nascent Vista developers.
Oh and by the way: I liked that data type... FuckedString!
FuckedString fsValue = new FuckedString("Hahaha");
*Ahem* -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#34Thank light we have fancy new languages that cover up most of those issues from us. Except when "the plumbing sticks up through the floor."
Yeah, I've got 2 out of his 3 books, and I love his work. You can get them in a bundle set on Amazon for something like $30. Great deal. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#35I am going to be concentrating on the links page over the next couple days.
http://www.strolen.com/links.php
I say that publicly so I don't find an excuse not to get to it.
Goal is to get it usable by Wednesday! -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#36Ok, so what. I didn't get it done.
I did fix a lot of the admin portion and have prettied up the code so I could understand it. Now I will dime and quarter it for the rest of the week. It is moving along at a strolen's pace, which is slower than your average turtle but much faster than any rabbit. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#37well, the links seem to be working ok as of today: 03-april-07
What could be great (might have been suggested before, unclear as to the exact intent) is a way to organise/categorise the favorites. For example, have favorite locations, npcs, systems, etc...
edit:Other thread takes care of the above request...must wear glasses when reading threads...
I also agree with the roadmap on 2.4 for RSS integration. that would be a real boon, and would help us keep track of the post that we want to watch while they grow, rather than rely on e-mail update! -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#38Is there any way to fix it so that there's some sort of notification when you update a sub? Bump them up on the comments list, have a section for updates in addition to most recent comments and new subs, maybe? Also, I am fully in support of creating a sort of "bookmarks" list of favorite subs (can't remember who suggested it). -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#39There is no specific notification, but there is a quick link to the last 20 updated. -
Re: V2.2+ Want List (in work)
#40RSS in work. See other thread! http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,4031.0.html
