  1. BETA TESTERS REQUESTED (Oops...too late)

Made the command decision to go for it. If I wait till I am done then we will never transition so in about 4 weeks (depending on when my baby is born) I am going to do the move to V2.0.

Things missing in V2.0 that will probably not be done by transition day.

    -Worlds
    -Links
-(*)Emailing Updates (possibly though, not a huge deal to do)
-(*)Some Misc Admin functions that would make life easier
-(*)Ability for user to change their theme
    -(*)Idea category editor
-(**)Some Categories not fully fleshed out.
    -(***)Definitions

(*) Things that I will probably finish but if I don't it won't hurt anything.
(**) Stuff that just needs to be worked on and can be changed before or after the moveover without affecting anything except forcing us to reorganize some things.
(***) Not working yet and not sure about the implementation of it yet. Do it or don't do it basically...not sure.

That might be just about it. Everything that is necessary for the site to run is already working at the moment, as far as I can tell. It already surpasses what we have now big time anyway.

So, if you would, can you go to www.rpgcitadel.com , login and start posting and voting and clicking on stuff to your heart's content. TRY and break stuff, and when you do, let me know what you did. There is nothing you can do that I can't fix so click on everything and type in anything everywhere to see what happens.

The formatting will get better as the week progresses, ignore formatting for the most part for now.

I would appreciate any help you can give me!!!!

    Thanks.

Okay I tested for a 30 minute period or so. The new version seems shockingly stable, but I did uncover some dirt:
    a) There is no limit on how many times I vote! (MoonHunter's "The Twisting of the Land")
I voted 2 times and each time counted
    b) There is no time limit between my posts... I can spam as much as I (dis)like!

That was all I uncovered so far.

Not being a tech person, I dont knowe if this was Me or the RPGCitadel. I couldn't log in. I'd type in my name and password and I would revert to the same entry screen.

Yeah, the login was troublesome for me too. In any case: You shouldn't have to be a tech person to log in. A double log in was demanded, but after that I was good to go. My real problem was that I depend on Opera's magic wand function too much and I had forgotten my password! :o

    Anyway: da** tricky login routine

Sweet. Not sure where the vote bug came from since that is pretty important and I swear I checked that at some point, but put in another layer of checks and that should be swatted.

I don't limit between posts, all I do is a double post check in case of a refresh. I suppose if it becomes an issue I will change that but right now not sure we need a time limit.

The one thing I am going to do is put that simple Turing test on Horde comments to stop the automated spammers, but beyond that, nothing at the moment.

    Thanks!!

No, there should be no secret to it.

I am not sure what to do about it though especially since AG had the same issue it seems. I have tried with Opera, IE, a fresh install of Mozilla and even tried IE on my wife's computer (that I have never logged on to V2.0 with) and I logged on with no problem the first time everytime.

So, basically, I can't duplicate it and since I can't duplicate it I can't troubleshoot it. Not sure what to do honestly.

Oh, maybe. Scras, have you disabled cookies? The login is suppose to work without them but I haven't really delved into that side of it so as of now the site pretty much requires cookies to store you session. You should make it through one login though and then kick you out on the next pageload so that doesn't fit all the evidence either but might be something wierd. Shucks...especially since AG has a similiar issue with the dual login required.

Will have to visit the old man on the mountain for this one....

I made Scras and AG admins on V2.0 so you can look at a few more things.

You can mess with most everything in the admin panel. You can view the "Edit Category" link but you should probably not mess with the categories at this point. I backed up the database just in case. ;)

Admin should give you some extra options. When you edit other people's submissions, that is where you can delete them and hide them and stuff.

Anyway, thats all I have the time for tonight. If anybody else wants to go check it out I can give admin rights to you as well.

OK, so a few minor things:

Couldn't login through the main page, but succeded through the forum. (Using Firefox, btw.)

Tried this and that, added even a lousy NPC for you to play with. (Hey, why couldn't I challenge my own submission? :) )

The "Add Submission" link is weirdly placed, couldn't find it at first.

I have challenged a submission (Ravenman); how do I get to a list of those? There are links to HoH and Golden submissions in the side menu, but not to challenged ones.

    Ugly characters in this.

That damn login. I can login from here at work as well, no problem. I will see about updating something somewhere though, gotta be something making that happen.

Add Submission Link - Noted. Will figure that out.

Ugly characters, yes, happens during the transition when I ensure that the content is 'safe' to post so might have to be a manual edit as we catch them. Will try a couple things then next time I transition the data to see if I can fix that.

If you can challenge, there should be a list on the frontpage that lists it automatically. I can probably put a link to it on the right menu for those that can do that as well, but I hesitate to do that. Might make it an option in the profile with some other things of that sort. It is already set up for that http://www.rpgcitadel.com/view.php?node=challenge just need to put the link somewhere for you. :)

Thanks for looking, will make you an admin when I get home.

    Notes to self
Header goes off page to right in IE
Rearrange Challange on Frontpage to be under HoH
Add recent additions to main page of each section instead of just random
*maybe recent according to the person browsing?

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: db_query() in /home/strolen/public_html/guild/smf_api.php on line 811

I did as stupid things as I could and the error is probably inconsequential, but still... the error arrived:

I tried to break your score system on submissions by using the browser back button and submitting the score over and over again. After about four tries the error above was born.

When I wrote the ingenious NPC, "Lil' Clara" http://www.rpgcitadel.com/content.php?node=1097 , the phpspeller wouldn't load properly (Opera 8.5)

Edit: This happened when I wrote the brilliant "hands of evil" organization too

The encoding isn't always up to the task and my "dream nectar" post contains some pretty weird diamond shaped thingies.

I was about to post a reply containg that when the error message; "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: db_query() in /home/strolen/public_html/guild/smf_api.php on line 811" reappeared. (This time when I was submitting the comment text)

Edit: The Simple Machines Forum seems stable so I devote my primary testing to the main site. Manfred is right though; some of those buttons are mighty ugly.
  14. BETA TESTERS REQUESTED (3 DAY countdown)

That smf_api is the link between the forum and the main site. Therein lies the login problem as well as that database call, obviously. I have had that error only a couple times but I see that it continues to be a problem.

I will run over the smf_api and see if anything needs to be modified with the newest version of the board, the same update that wiped out the themes may have some effect on the backed portion as well.

Will double check the encoding as well, I must have missed something and I am sure it is connected to the transition as well. Didn't notice it happened with new posts as well, could go a long way to fixing it.

Still at work so will get to it all later.

I resequenced the login script and confirmed the logged in variables through the script to try a new angle. I can still log in fine so would like to see what happens on your side.

This one should hopefully be fixed now....either that or it will become much worse. :)

In case you don't read the last message, let me know about the login problem again, I made some changes.

OK, successfully logged in the first time from the main page.

Not a bug, but seeing the Hall of Honor, why not name it Hall of Honour? Looks better IMO (sorry for American English ;) ). If it becomes widely used we could make it even "Halls".

AG has reported my post in the forum to a moderator - that was me :) , and I have recieved his e-mail address as a part of the "From". The reporter's username would be more fitting, put the e-mail into the body. Also, a link to the user's profile would be useful so we can easily learn more about him or her.

All moderators and administrators got that mail if I am not mistaken ;) And it is just a "spam mail" address, sorry Strolen's but I had no guarantee you guys were honest when I first joined ;)

The new system is awesome and slightly overwhelming at first. Lets hope the usability is good enough to not scare people away with the sheer complexity.

    1) could not log into main page, but could log into forum
    2) Forum buttons are the tacky blue, please fix.
    3) Admin Tool for changing who wrote the post, so we can transfer things from the forums to here (since the forums will need to change drastically, when we transfer out most of the threads in the ideas sections and worlds section).
    4) I will try some more soon.....

Pesky bug. Thought I had it licked!!! Try it again if you would. I made another change. Thanks.

    2) Forum buttons are the tacky blue, please fix.

This will be a fix of opportunity. If I get 'in the mood' to do I will probably knock it all out in a few hours. I have quite a few coding problems to work through before that have a priority. They are a little annoying to me too.

    3) Admin Tool for changing who wrote the post, so we can transfer things from the forums to here (since the forums will need to change drastically, when we transfer out most of the threads in the ideas sections and worlds section).

The way I am going to implement this is easiest for me since it requires the least amount of coding to make it work so I am not hacking more into the main scripts...especially since once it is done we shouldn't need it again and I will remove it. This makes it easy to add submissions, comments, ideas, etc etc as a different user without me having to hack every single form and piece of logic behind it.

So, I am going to let every admin temperarily change who they appear as through their profile. When you go to your V2.0 profile (not the forum) click on change preferences, there will be a box to put in the user's ID that you will be imputting posts for. Enter and then the main heading should show that user as the one that is logged on.
  27. BETA TESTERS REQUESTED (3 DAY countdown)

Seems to work fine. I abused Moonhunter a little bit.

Only annoyance is that when you try to go to your own profile, even though it says your name still in the header, it takes you to whoever you are temp changed to. You have to type your name in the search and get to your profile that way. The name will stay on top till a refresh as well once you change back to yourself. Too much trouble to make that happen immediately, so just refresh and it should be gone.

Any thoughts, suggestions, additions to the submission page to make it more user friendly would be appreciated. I tried to fix it up a little bit but since I am so close to the code and how the site works, what might be obvious to me might not make any sense to Joe New User.

    Thanks!

By the way, on a new submission the preview doesn't work. On my list...well, it works sort of, just not correctly and doesn't let you input a submission, it dissappears when you click "Update" after the preview. For testing, press back and submit it. :)

    Login was fine:
Looked at the top line: Dungeon category?

Tried to add things to the Idea Scroll.
    * Those entries come out more as ideas, rather than full entries. When you try and link another entry into the scroll it comes up as an aside (if you liked this thread, you might like.... or you need these things to make this work).

*Things in a scroll should expand out into real entries, instead of just being summary pieces.

*What do the + - do on the scroll entry posts?

*ditto for the ( # ) Ratings? Scroll votes?

    * Can't link out. That may be feature rather than a bug. Perhaps people of a certain rank or above can do it?

*You can not search by item number. In fact, I put in specific numbers from posts and they did not come up.

*There is no search by category, so I want all the items with the word swamp.

*Can we control the number of listings per page?

*Ratings from votes should have only two or three significant digits. 4.22222222222222 is kind of strange. This can just be a limit on how far things print out, rather than messing with the formula.

*I miss the squack box. I know it was a nightmare. Just a comment.

*The left side does not have a place for other categories. We have two society entries, but they do not show up on the sidebar.

    *Moonhunter the Weevil? Oh Please!

*encounters are what exactly? Should these not be plots? Or Should they not be ideas? Do ideas get to have categories? This is a good idea, but sigh... more manual shifting. Make go away please or allow us to categorize other ideas. Note: we have a thread for cool places for a fight. That could go here.

    *Tips coming up

*How do we unsubscribe favorites? Lets say I get bored of the book thread for a while?

*I am not sure I like having my IP number show up on my profile. In fact. I really don't.

    *karma explain

    * My email is clicked not to be visable to the world... yet there it is.

*Is it just an admin thing or can anyone edit their number of posts and origin date?

    Login was fine:
Looked at the top line: Dungeon category?

Forgot that one, will add that tonight. Will need subcategories for that as well as Articles.

I use the term loosely and because of that it has become ambiguous. My fault entirely on this one. The Idea Scroll you are thinking of and the one that is currently implemented are completely separate beasts. There is little to no similarity between them.
I need to change the name of the current incarnation somehow.

The nature and purpose of the current list in its current form.
My intention was for the currently, wrongly named 'Idea Scroll' to be used the way I used the "books" submission I just put in Items. It was intended to allow a place for small tidbits, that won't make a full submission, to be inputted. There are many topical things in the Idea Scroll Forum that fit here, books being one and I am sure you can point out others. Some of the Establishments or whatever would fit into this too, they are small enough to be comfortable in a list of other similar places but might be out of place as their own entity as a submission. We need a place for these smaller posts to go. If they all go to main submissions we will quickly have many half-ass unfleshed out submissions. They are good ideas and great thoughts, but many probably don't need to be full submissions. So, the current, wrongly named 'Idea Scroll' was my answer to this.

    The real IDEA SCROLL
Is what you are thinking of, and rightly so. This has not been created yet as the principle of this and the World's section is pretty much identical. This IDEA SCROLL will actually suck full submissions in that are similar or that somebody wants to structure together. This will be done in a variety of ways with different options and such, many of which we have spoken of already. So, when you see 'Idea Scroll' in the current site, it is misrepresented and I will come up with a name for it today and make the corrections.

*What do the + - do on the scroll entry posts?

*ditto for the ( # ) Ratings? Scroll votes?

The FAQ, once I get there, will go into some of these. The + and - are the ability to vote on that specific comment. The number is the current votes. The + and - will continue to show up after you vote but will only count one vote per comment per user so you can't just jack it up. Just wasn't going to add another query per comment just to make them disappear.

    * Can't link out. That may be feature rather than a bug. Perhaps people of a certain rank or above can do it?

Should be an all or nothing thing. What do you think? Is it useful? Not sure if it will be needed except for linking to the forum perhaps? I was just trying to keep it clean, but this can change on a whim.

*You can not search by item number. In fact, I put in specific numbers from posts and they did not come up.

    Bug, need to fix that.

*There is no search by category, so I want all the items with the word swamp.

This is true, didn't think of it. Will confine the search to the page you are currently browsing. Will have an advanced search as well before V2.0 goes live…I hop.

*Can we control the number of listings per page?

Yes, on your profile page, click on "Edit Profile" next to your name in the heading. That is where the option for changing the amount is. 1-99 is the limit. This is also where you flag users and now it holds the option to take over another person's profile. You will be able to change your theme here too once we have more than one.

*Ratings from votes should have only two or three significant digits. 4.22222222222222 is kind of strange. This can just be a limit on how far things print out, rather than messing with the formula.

This was requested actually, but I can narrow it down to maybe 4.

*I miss the squack box. I know it was a nightmare. Just a comment.

Yes, the chat.. .. .. .. .. .. .. Will have to figure out something for this. The shoutbox will be an add-on but it is definitely doable. I liked it a lot too, just the one I had was a ugly hack and didn't flow over to a real chat program.

*The left side does not have a place for other categories. We have two society entries, but they do not show up on the sidebar.

Are you talking about the Index page? That will be slightly reorganized and all the categories will have their 5 recent submission list. On the society main page they are there.

    Focus ( 2 )
    -Agricultural (1)
    -Travelers (1)
    Influence ( 2 )
    -World Wide (2)

    *Moonhunter the Weevil? Oh Please!

What? You wrote it. It has your name as author?!?

*encounters are what exactly? Should these not be plots? Or Should they not be ideas? Do ideas get to have categories? This is a good idea, but sigh... more manual shifting. Make go away please or allow us to categorize other ideas. Note: we have a thread for cool places for a fight. That could go here.

Encounters are leftovers. Have no idea what to do with them. Ideas will have at least a single category, the crappy default cats to the left will be changed, just put them there so there was something. Haven't added the ability to edit/add/change them yet. I was thinking the organization of those would fall under our major categories. Items, NPCs, Plots, Lifeforms, etc and just use those. Most of them are too random or too small to need much more than that.

    *Tips coming up

*How do we unsubscribe favorites? Lets say I get bored of the book thread for a while?

Another bug with the theme transfer. Good one. When you browse a submission that is already on your favorite list, the "Add to Favorites" links should read "Remove from Favorites" if you click on it, it will remove that favorite. It currently works like that, just that the label is incorrect.

    --------FORUM STUFF-------

Just to let you know, I don't have much control over the forum software. I can make it look like I want and can do some stuff, but other things are just not fixable. If I did mess with them then the next upgrade (which are feature and security updates that I won't pass up) it would all get ruined anyway. So most of this will just remain that way.

*I am not sure I like having my IP number show up on my profile. In fact. I really don't.

This is an admin feature only. We are the only ones that can see the IPs.

    *karma explain

No, that will be disabled. I think it is an option in the admin panel to turn it off. I just turned it on to see what it did. Just votes for your post.

    * My email is clicked not to be visable to the world... yet there it is.

That is *Evil* but I am hoping it is an admin feature. Just checked, looks like that is the case. Login with test6 test6 who is a normal user and see what he can see.

*Is it just an admin thing or can anyone edit their number of posts and origin date?

Admin thing I am sure. You can do you Karma too :)

*PMs should cause a pop-up when you get them or when you first log in as the default.

PM notification should happen when you are making posts, rather than when you are on the forum. In the new configuration, you really don't have to go to the forum to be a really useful member.

This is one of the things I have no control over.

Profile: Can I find all the posts by others?

Now, there are two profiles. On the V2.0 profile page the link to all submissions is in the top right. On the forum profile page there is a link at the bottom that shows "last posts" or something like that.

Rem: We are going to have to update all the items and entries by hand. They will not automatically select the correct categories.

    True

Rem: When we bring posts from the forums over, how are we going to give them ratings, votes, and so on? Or do they go to "first posts"?

Well, probably be better to make them first posts. I can't think of a fair way to give out ratings and votes. They will just get the normal XP for the submission.

REM: ??? When the big day occurs, you will be transfering over the entire bit of the first site, correct? I would hate to loose all this stuff from the last few weeks.

The entire V2.0 database will be overwritten by the V1.0 data the day I decide to move everything over. I will transfer the domain and move all the data over. I will then automatically redirect strolen.com to rpgcitadel.com until the domain transfer goes through and it truly becomes strolen.com again. So once I do it, the data will be moved and I will redirect everybody to the new site so that nothing new gets inputted on the V1.0.

    Enough for now. Nite

Thanks! You gave me a lot to work on tonight. Will do as much as I can. (At work now, sneaking in the response now so I can work right when I get home)

    1. Search by number seemed to work fine for me. Went to about a dozen different submissions and typed in their number and they came back up. Also did some random number pecking of which a few didn't show up since they weren't there. Sure you were looking at the submission ID?

    2. The search is now dependent on what category you are browsing. It will be site wide from anywhere except viewing category lists, either the front page or one of the sort options.

    3. Ratings are now limited to 4 sig digits.

    4. Added Dungeons to the top but needs categories like the articles.

    5. Index page, added last five submission boxes to left for what was left.

I got a bit done tonight! Now I am going to double post into my rebuild blog. :)

That covered most of the easily solved problems right? Oh, the outside link thing. That is tabled for further discussion. Am glad the login worked too, that freaked me out when I saw there was yet more trouble with it.

With the fear that I am spamming this thread....I put the shoutbox back up for the time being. Figured that might make some sense since there is currently no real chatroom available.

The field to post to the chat appears when you login.

Updated your categories Moon. Thanks. Did post that question about "Why" the dungeon is there. Always an interesting one to try and explain but not sure if it bleeds over into the realm of settings. Could make the argument either way.

I made it so comments can have links (as long as they are the full link with the http and everything, and also now allow b, em, i, strong, and u so you can bold, italicize and underline in whatever format you are used to.

Should give a little more control to the posters. Gave it to all comments and Idea Lists for now.

"Idea Lists" is what I call the current incarnation. "Idea Scrolls" will be the big daddy. Still not enough separation between the two titles I don't think. Too easy to confuse. Haven't come up with anything else to call them though....

*How do we unsubscribe favorites? Lets say I get bored of the book thread for a while?

Finally fixed that one. Missed a global in the database check.

Also added recent 5 posts to the main page and each section.

Not a bug, but seeing the Hall of Honor, why not name it Hall of Honour? Looks better IMO (sorry for American English ;) ). If it becomes widely used we could make it even "Halls".

    Updated. Sure, why not? :)

Wasn't sure about the plural though.

    1) Spell check? I know it might not be possible, but if anyone can do it.....

    2) As for "Scrolls". The replies (not comments) should be similar to normal posts. That way we can just goto the scroll post and begin to make related items. If we don't you will have two qualities of posts in such threads: The first being full write ups, the second being shorter crapier posts.

Take the examples of the Societies thread, Given our vesion 2 structure of the scrolls. The first few posts would be of the second type. The later ones with actual descriptions of the groups, their motivations, and such, would be actual items. If the comment threads were in the same format as "real posts", we could improve the general quality of the scrolls by minimizing the number of scruff posts.

The Summary section would appear, unless you clicked on it... kind of like what the front page does. Maybe borrowing the code from that?

Besides, if you start on building this structure, you will make Settings easier. Just a thought.

    3) We could have a direction function. Somewhere it would say, "Today, we would like to see (randomly generated type, and one of the categories)". For example, "Today we would like to see, Items -Books". This direction would change every 24 hours. Thus people who don't have direction as to what they might want to post, now have one.

We could make it a mini contest. Post something of the correct type on the given day, and score the highest rank by the next day, earn more points.

It does not have to be 24 hours, we could make it a week. But I would like the faster turn around.

The "winner" posts can be in a Hall of their own.

There is on the main submissions. Think it has Opera problems but works fine in IE. Not sure about doing it on the comments. I will put it on my list, can't hurt right?

All right, I can work this and it probably makes more sense to me since I just split the submission format off so it is actually a pretty simple thing to do now.

So, if I take your meaning (and if not then this is my tangent) we have the main king submission. This is the List/Scroll starter. Societies for instance. It might contain a society, but the purpose for this initial post is to describe what this List/Scroll will hold.

Now we have other Full Submissions (FS) that fit nicely in this List/Scroll that are already inputted or that will be inputted. So, in the cae of Idea List/Scroll, the "Suggested Submissions" turn into Idea Scroll submissions and the entire post, to include stats, is pulled into the List/Scroll one after another. They will have a link in them that will allow you to visit the actual submission and comment on that specific submission.

After these full submissions, there will still be the ability to do what we are doing now with the Idea List, smaller non-submission worthy ideas and descriptions.

After these are the normal comments/votes.

To add a main submission to the group, you still use the suggest submissions button on the bottom and it will be added.

Is that more or less what you are thinking?

    3) We could have a direction function. Somewhere it would say, "Today, we would like to see (randomly generated type, and one of the categories)". If Quests doesn't take care of it, I will need more explanation on this one.

Currently we have Quests. If you login, go to the admin panel and on the bottom of the left menu is add quest and/or view quest. View the quests and click on any of them and you can edit them to make them active again, change them, whatever. Or make your own to see what happens.

Take a look at that and see if that fills the bill. Basically you can assign an entire category or only a subcategory to gain extra XP points for the length of the quest. As soon as you put in a quest it appears on the front page announcing it.

You set the following in the quest.
    -Name
-Dates from and to (can set one to start in the future if you want)
-Bonus XP amount (pretty much anything, I didn't put limits on it...oops)
-Category of quest (any main or subcategory - list is of id's is under form)
-Description (have to build it up and tell them what category it is in)

They aren't completely done yet, but you can add a quest and people get the XP for it.

    On my list as Need:
-Need to remove quest XP if submission is deleted
    -Track submissions with quest
--Associate the submission with a quest. So if I inputted X for a quest, when I veiw X I can see the quest is was submitted for with a link to the quest and all others that were under that quest as well.
--basically be able to view all the old quests and see what submissions were created during those quests. Just another way to browse for stuff really.

    Okay a couple of things

    1) Large Articles need to be Scrolls, so everything is automatically linked. Just a warning.

    2) But the FORMATTING from the old site does not immediately transfer to the new site. "[""']" vs "". This is not bad for new posts (annoying but not bad), but it will destroy the formatting of the transfer posts.

    3) Table or somesuch HTML possible? Or a tab equivalent that will stick?

    4) Block quote should be boxed. Not that important, but graphically very useful. :)

So you can break them up in sections, yet can still have them all together?

    2) But the FORMATTING from the old site does not immediately transfer to the new site. "[""']" vs "". This is not bad for new posts (annoying but not bad), but it will destroy the formatting of the transfer posts.

Before we start moving them I will add the script that fixes that to the submission form. It is not currently in there. When we start moving you will be able to copy and paste and it will fix the formatting and links.

    3) Table or somesuch HTML possible? Or a tab equivalent that will stick?

I can make tables available. Using the tags will retain any tab/space formatting.

    4) Block quote should be boxed. Not that important, but graphically very useful. :)

I can buy that. Perhaps block quote could be formatting for the text to wrap around it like some sites and most magazines have. That stand outish eye catching boxed, formatted quote taken out of the current article/post.
