skull shuriken

Three shuriken carved from the skull of a dragon, they say they never miss the heart…

40 xp 6,053 views Codex

Codex introduction

A long time ago, a powerful mercenary was hired to dispatch a terrible dragon wich was destroying villages faster than lightning strikes. So, as quick as he was given the gold, he grabed his favorite weapons, shuriken thowing stars, and traveled to the dragons lair. The battle that fallowed was terrible, but the dragon was slain by the brave mercenary. However, he was mortally wounded and had only months to live, so he decided to create something to leave his legacy behind after he died. With his final shuriken, he carved three perfect throwing stars out of the dragon’s skull, than traveled to the nearby village to rest his weary, tattered body. They say he had the shuriken enchanted, than gave them to a fellow mercenary who sold them to get himself through tough times. The shuriken can tear through chain mail in seconds, making armor practically useless. Unfourtunatly, (Or is it fourtunatly?)no-one has any idea where they are now, but if they fell into the wrong hands…

Magical Properties:

The stars can peirce through chain mail like wet paper, and most other metals hardly stand a chance against theses stars when thrown by an expert. The only simple way to take a hit from theese when thrown by an expert is to deflect the stars somehow.

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

Sure kill weapons really don't leave a lot to play with. A weapon that never misses isn't that fun.

I love the background on the creation of them though but the actual weapon itself needs something that makes it more real and fun to use in a campaign.

Instead of always hitting the heart, I would say a more feasible power for them would be the ability to penetrate armor much easier then any other weapon. Perhaps it can go through chain mail like nothing and only is slightly slowed by plate, a minus to the damage. The accuracy should be left to the skill but the power the weapon holds should be more appropriate. The holder could also be protected from the dragon's breathe weapon, or perhaps the weapon itslef has added damage of the breath weapon of the dragon or something.

There's no roleplaying in this item.

It's no fun to roleplay when you can defeat any enemy simply by throwing these shuriken at them.

This is a power gamer's item, plain and simple. I'm sorry.

I don't think exactly agree with CaptainPenguin, but you really should be a little more explanatory like Strolen is suggesting.

Conceptionally a great idea, if I can, I'll put it in my game!

I agree with Strolen and Captian, and I have some of my own observations to point out.

How much of a threat could this dragon be if he can be killed with throwing stars?

How mortally wounded could the mercenary be if he was assumedly far away throwing shuriken?

How can a mercenary in possesion of throwing stars that never miss the heart ever be in such bad times he needs to sell said throwing stars?

How mortally wounded can a guy be when he can still manage to skin and masterfull carve a dragon's skull?

This is an interesting, but illogical and broken item. I do not like it, but I DO like the original thought put into it. A little less munchkin, and a little more thought into character's abilities, and you could make a great item.

    hmm..good points..

and as for the dragon, the mercenary was an awsome fighter, and seriously, who (or what) wouldnt die from a 10 inch star through the eye?

    oh, an P.S.

Shuriken are balanced throwing weapons. They are effectively balanced, round throwing knives. In terms of distance and power, in the real world, they function more like thrown items than missle/ bow weapons. Note:they are much more accurate than most thrown weapons given their aerodynamic profile. You can also 'chuck them' with no accuracy a much farther distance than a normal thrown weapon (knife, axe, bola) kind of like a frisbee.

Gash: Capitalization, Punctuation, and Spell check. Type it in with upper and lower case. At least look over the post before you submit it.

    Where to start?

Flinging a 10 inch star would be a good way of avoiding those nasty mortal injuries.

Shuriken are not 10 inches across, large ones are typically 4 inches wide.

Shuriken cannot be used like daggers, they have no handle of which to hold.

Please try to draw your inspirations from more than Final Fantasy video games. If you come across an idea you like, do some research into it to find out what it's about. Google is your friend.

    Whoa there annie oakly,

first of all the lenght was an exageration, and honestly, i hate capitolas and punctuations, not to renege or anything, but dont expect a lot of that from me.

but, since you are asking for it, i will add punctuations and capitols and stuff, but ONLY in stuff like item posts, ok?

You better. If you never punctuate or capitolize, even if you hate it, you won't get as good ratings, no matter how good the item is.

As far as I can see, a single shuriken is not going to kill most characters. Even if the thing always hits, it still is not a kill item in a normal D&D setting.

(damage = 1d4 average hitpoints for a commoner is 1d8)

Even if the shuriken would ignore all natural, metal, wooden and leather armor, you would need quite a couple of these to kill a decent sized dragon.... (20d12 hitpoints I think)

Hmm...Now if i understood how to calculate damage that way, i might be fallowing you...

Actually, Ylorea, I believe the idea was that the shurikens were magical, though he never actually said that in his background.

Ok. So a guy kills a dragon with little tiny throwing knivesand gets horrible messed up in the process. He then hauls his bleeding ass to the nearest town that just so happens to have a mighty spellcaster in it (How else could they have been enchanted in this way?). How do you live for months when your mortally wounded? How far away was this town if the dragon was detroying towns 'faster than lightning strikes' (and i assume the dragon would attack all nearby tows first)? Why was the dragon attacking? Was is bored? Dragons arent mindless destroyers, they attack for a reason (as far as I know anyway). This item makes little to no sense in a realistic light. If you fixed it it might be better.

P.S. - HOW THE HELL TO YOU CARVE A DRAGONS SKULL WITH A SHURIKEN?

Calm down everyone :-) Many different definitions of different things (even if some are wrong ;-p ).

With a simple adjustment to power these stars could be nice. I like the idea of carving throwing stars out of a dragon skull. Let's work with what we like and ignore what we don't :-)
