Stone Lizards

Hall of Honour

1 mark from 1 Strolenati

Bestowed by readers who would defend this scroll.

Large lizards about 5 feet long, nothing about them seems to stand out. As drab and colorless as the parched brown stone of the desert, these things come across as your average (admitedly huge) reptile residents. But what most wouldn't know is that these scaly things are virtually unkillable, thanks to a unique gift that they possess.

When a stone lizard finds itself under attack by a predator,it does what comes naturally to it. It turns into stone, quite literally, leaving the attacking predator finding itself grappling with a statue of a lizard. This transformation from flesh to stone also occurs when the lizard finds itself weakening from a lack of food and water. This keeps the lizard safe until it feels ready to come out again. After all, lizards who are stone don't need food or water.

To the lizard, this process is hardly unsettling and is merely a state of hibernation and safety that it escapes too until some part of it's mind tells it that it is ready to revert back to a living animal again.

Hall of Honour

for Stone Lizards

The Hall of Honour is your mark on a submission you believe is frick’n awesome — so good you would jump in front of a dragon’s breath to protect the scroll it is written on.

Bestowing HoH also highlights it on the front of the Citadel for about a day, so others see the recognition it earned.

You may bestow HoH on the same submission up to your level (with a short wait between strikes). Five distinct HoH voters raise a work to Golden.

    - Tourists pick up a stone lizard and take it home thinking it a cunning tribal statue. A week or so later, sensing more water, the lizard turns back into meat and goes wandering around, frightening the house help, eating plants and such. Not so much a menace, but certainly worth a few laughs

    - Finding an area full of these stone lizards gives rise to rabid rumormongering of a basilisk, or medusa in the area. Pranksters drop off a stone statue of a person, and reap the rewards later when they return with the 'head' of the monster. What happens when a real basilisk comes into the area?

    - Do they taste like chicken?

    - Painting the stone lizards while they are stone, just for fun.

Now there are some interesting ideas for the Stone Lizards. :)

And yes, they are good to eat. If you can manage to slay them before they can turn into stone.

I like it! The stone ability is indeed that spice that lifts this submission above the normal, solid post. For it to have rated higher, I would have expected it to be more fleshed out with habitat, food preferences, whether it was a nocturnal creature and so on. For a full 5 it would need to be exciting as well as have plot ideas and so on

It's a good post, and a nice idea. But, if you had mentioned what Scrasamax did in his comment I would have given you a 4 or 4.5 I think. This creature has some good potential for fun.
