HELP! Need to create forum rules.
#1Ok, my wife Kitara, who is an avid bulletin board user, made an observation about the forum that bothered me. She probably represents a first time visitor very well since she is not really interested in roleplaying and just does a quick run through the board to see if anything interesting is going on.
What she observed and was turned off by all the bashing that she came upon. Now, she may of hit a few that we know about but relooking I see a few that bash and then go off topic and an answer never gets answered.
I want this to stop immediately and I think you will agree with me.
I think the admins do a good job being constructive but I believe there are too many posts that bash without helping.
I think we have too much quality here to be drowned out by babble and arguing. Too many other RP forums have deteriorated into one huge kiddy chat room and I have no intentions of letting that happen here. We have too many intelligent, and mature, people here to let the kiddies take it over.
Because of this I want to draft a good set of forum rules that will let everyone know exactly what we expect. I also don't want to be rule heavy because too many rules will create too much of a weight on newbies.
So here is my attempt. Once these are finalized I think I should put them at the top of every topic oriented forum. I still could care less what they do in those two chat room forum parts, but the rest of the site should remain as pure as possible.
Once these get finalized then I will start going through and pruning the fluff. -
Forum Rules
#2
[*] Keeping threads on topic
The contents (i.e. the individual posts) of any thread should always be relevant to its title. For example a thread called "Inventing Languages" should not include a discussion about someone's hair color, whether another user is an idiot, the weather, etc! Please keep every thread relevant to its title.
[*] Users 'fighting' (aka flaming) in threads
Users should not use the forum to settle petty disputes amongst each other. The purpose of this forum is for people who enjoy roleplaying, fantasy adventures, etc. to chat and help each other - it's not a virtual boxing ring or a school yard. The site's terms of use make it clear that abusive behaviour is not welcomed or allowed on this site. If you want to have a 1-to-1 chat or heated argument then find another place to do it - or better still take a breath and relax, life is too short!
[*] Swearing and 'Masked' Swearing
The majority of swear words are not allowed on Strolen's Citadel. If you do accidentally swear then the forum software has an auto-censor which should replace your swearing with a number of *'s. Please respect the auto-censor and do not attempt to bypass it by inserting spaces or any other characters in to your swear words.
[*] Topic Titles Be descriptive!
Don't just post a title called "Help" or "Very funny" - it's annoying for everyone and no-one likes an attention seeker. Give users an idea of what your post is about. If someone wants to read your post they will, so please don't try and trick them in to reading it.
[*] Respect the minimum character limit
Each post you make on the forum should be at least 15 characters long. This is a forum NOT a chat room. All the posts you make in topic oriented threads of Strolen's Citadel should contribute something of value.

Ummm.
#3You know of course, that our two most recent problem members are the primary offenders in this... Though we have had others, their annoyances have all been purged.
Should we just purge their every entry? Do we give them a chance to prove themselves, or should we just nuke them right from the begining?
Elfkin is turning around. If we had slammed him away for being annoying we would of never seen the better posts. Of course there are those that never turned around... but do we want to eliminate the marginals that may get better on the chance they may not?
Should we purge their posts out of the greetings and piccuyne? (which I have not been doing, as those are more open). What about in roleplaying?
I admit we are not helping so much when we respond to them in a less than respectful and caring way We have occasionally fanned the flames. *cough*capt*cough* All of us have done this from time to time and we are mostly pretty good about not doing it. -
HELP! Need to create forum rules.
#4I suppose you are right to a point, but with no written *law* then when it happens then we have reinvent the rules in a PM or rag on them in chat (or in threads which I want to stop doing) and there is nothing to say they can't do any of it in the first place except common sense and courtesy.
Without a written rules then the "why are my posts being deleted" thing can come into play and we have to go through a speel on why.
The rules on every page might be a little much, but having them somewhere that we can just say, "Hey, read and heed" would be much easier then trying to form a PM everytime we get a new one or trying to explain why posts get deleted....and we got another new one today that spammed all over.
Ria has control over the roleplaying and I think a little chat in there is inevitable. I still suggest an OOC thread to compliment it for heavier talk but in thread OOC has to happen to. It is a matter of balance in there so the players are the best judge of what they accept or don't accept so I am hesitant to delete things there.
When we get newbies that start getting out of control I think we just delete everything innappropriate without question. Then send them a PM with a link to the rules that says we have deleted some of your pots. Please be so kind as to read the rules of the forum and --explain what they did wrong a little bit--
Right now I have been just deleting because it is a pain to draft up a PM. And that is what I am hoping some appropriate forum behaviour guidance will do, make our life easier so I don't have to explain myself to every noob that goes crazy.
I know we haven't had much trouble but a handful, but I think it will continue to happen in trickles and it is easier to be proactive and prepared. -

[*] Chatspeak and H4x0r $p34k
We prefer full sentences and use of Emoticons to Chatspeak. For instance instead of using LOL use  etc. but the accidental usage of Chatspeak should not be flamed.

[*] No Commercial Advertising
No commercial advertising whatsoever. End of story. If you have a nonprofit webpage then feel free to let us know about it. Don't abuse this privilege though. Think about what you are doing and ask yourself, "Would you want somebody doing that on your site?"
[*] Signatures
Please keep your signature to a suitable length and keep in mind the advertising rules. You may absolutely link to your personal site in your signature. Your signature may be edited or deleted at our descretion if it is deemed inappropriate.
[*] Respect the administrators and moderators decissions.
Moderating a forum can be hard work, and to make things easier and better for everyone else, we would greatly appreciate it if you do your best to make these forums a pleasant place. If a thread gets locked, or a post gets deleted or some other thing happens. Please do not go and make another post or thread about it, as that is not wanted and will be promptly locked or deleted. If you have a problem, send a personal message to an administrator or moderator.
[*] We reserve the right to amend these rules without warning and at our discretion.
It is up to you as a forum member to keep up to date with these rules.

HELP! Need to create forum rules.
#7I think this is a good idea. I put up a rules thread in Roleplaying, and it seems to have helped some. I try to be involved in the threads, although I know I could do a better job of it. I'll see what should be done about an OOC thread/forum. I'll also keep a better eye on what goes on in there. Pretty much, I don't mind it if it's relevant, non-rude and/or insulting, and doesn't offend the other players.
... That reminds me. I should probably update those, scan all of the active threads, and trim some of the dead ones. When I get the time to do so; that is in short supply. -

#8These rules all look good to me. I heartily approve and will actually look into the threads and see what's going on. As it is, I hardly read any. I'll work on that  -

#9When registering to become a member, the forum displays a few guidelines for member behaviour. It could be easily expanded to contain all the things we consider most important, plus the link/description on how/where to find all rules, who to ask, etc.
Of course, many people ignore this outright when registering. But, it WILL be there, and we can bash them with this fact too. If necessary.
(one for the critique)
"I don't like it!"
That happens. If you DO say that, always say why. Explain your attitude. Offer possible improvements, but keep in mind what the author wanted to achieve. Above all, we respect constructive criticism. If you can't respond with anything useful, stay silent.
