It has become a "hot topic" right now. You might as well be able to separate fact from fantasy/ hype.

Once again, Flu is making the news. Being medically inclined, I bring this thread to the fore.

Stay warm. Get a good deal of sleep. Eat well. Occasionally exercise (with or without a partner). Really that will do a great deal towards NOT GETTING ANY DISEASE.

The Bird Flu is approaching us european Strolenites. The more hysteric elements of society predicts a scourge worse than the black death and those newspapers' predicted bodycount has already reached five digits.

I will try NOT TO GET THAT DISEASE! Hehe ;)

Rosie and me have been taking 5000 I.U of Vitamin D3 every day for over 5 years now, we haven't had the flu in roughly the same amount of time. (and no we don't bother with the flu vaccine, unlike other vaccines the flu virus mutates too quick for it to be of any worthwhile effect.)

YMMV, but eh, no harm in giving it a go?

Edit: This video was one of the main reasons we gave it a try.

There is nothing to be said about the flu front that hasn't been panicked about in the news.  People just have to remember that the Flu does kill people... a good number in every state... so it is nothing to ignore.  Don't believe me... check it out on the web.

The flu vaccine does not protect against an individual strain, but a group of related strains (and given some years, a combination of several groups of related strains).  So it will give you protection (full or partial) from any bug in the same family.  It does not stop every bug .  If a new one comes from somewhere else (visitor, line jumper, or just a minor non-included strain that breaks from the pack and surges ahead) hope you have immunity from its ancestor's previous visits.  (Hence the reason why cross species jumps are so scary)

Also remember that the vaccine helps build herd immunity.  Bugs do not pass around much if they do not have ready hosts.  Enough people immuoized keeps the numbers down.  The better the herd immunity, the smaller chance of transmission and mutation.

After all... are your measles shots up to date?  How many people whent "on the cheap" and didn't immunize their kids.  They saved themselves the 30 bucks for the shot.  Then their kid gets measles or worse yet acted as a carrier.    Measles kill 400 people a day around the world... in populations that don't have immunizations.  Sure, you are unlikely to die in the first world... but notice I said Unlikely.

Flu... pretty much the same way.

The average person will get the flu once every 4 years (though the number 7 is often thrown around).  The darn things cycle fast enough.  Your immune system should handle it if you stop, rest, eat well, and drink fluids.  If you don't... then be prepared for weeks of torture and possibly an involuntary visit to the MD via ambulance.

Just a note:  Silveressa's high acid (vit c) defense works in small/ low contact areas.  If you are in a high traffic/ high population areas, even adding zinc, it will not protect/ immuproof you from the ever shifting germ sea.

That is all I know for now...  AT least this year does not have a plague possible flu like two or three years back.

It is worth noting that getting an accurate count of influenza related deaths is difficult because very few people actually die because of influenza, and the vast majority either develop complications, or the disease aggravates an existing condition. It is also worth noting that the overwhelming majority of influenza deaths in the US are 65 and older, which is a damning black spot on our national level care for senior citizens and the elderly.

I think I caught all strains plus the flu that I caught from getting the flu shot. And probably some food poisoning and a small dose of pneumonia and a sinus infection. And I am still recovering from it. I think some of it was a minor itch of the plague but I can't be sure. We burned all our clothes and mattresses though just to be safe.

I can still barely make it 14 hours of the day without starting to zone out...except 12 of that is at work. So, yeah, you can take your flu and &^%$ %^&##@!
