I think I am going to have to disable comments for unregistered users.

    Problems:
Well, fixed the blank post problem. That can't happen.
But all somebody would have to do is type a letter and it could be submitted.
Also, if we want the function that the comments be mailed, it is probably not a good idea to allow anybody to put anything in there. Who knows what an anonymous poster could do.

At least with a registered user I have some options.
Have their name email to ban if needs be.
If people start joining just to spam I can turn on some features of the forum to help stop it. Email confirmation before becoming registered. Admin approval required before registered. Drastic but doable.

I don't see anything really bad happening, but are by concerns founded? Or should I not worry about it till it happens?

I think it's a good idea that users should register before adding comments, because that way they're easier to track down and block (though you would have a record of their ISP, wouldn't you?). But I think vetting before they actually do anything wrong is a little unnecessary: I liked the fact that when I joined I could post things straight away without having to wait for approval. It might be better to employ an "innocent until proven guilty" methodology here. Unless something really goes wrong and some spammer or script kiddie starts acting up, in which case initial approval of registered users would become an issue. But I don't think it's necessary yet.

In short, I think the benefit in being open and egalitarian gives a welcoming feeling which outweighs the need for a pre-emptive strike.

Is there any way that someone could get rid of comments that don't add to a post, or are unreadable? (Or maybe just annoying.)
Also, and semi-unrelated: Is 'bitchen' even a word?

Bitchen? That would be my friend, Erik. I believe that it is actually Bitching or bitchin' if you prefer. But enough pretty talk. Yarr! Ye landlubbers be makin' me thirsty! MORE GROG!

I think anonymous posts have there place. If you drop the ability for unregistered uses to post can you add a "make this post anonymous" option to the posting menu? Is it a built in forum option? I won't hold my breath since I have never seem anyone have it available.

Sounds like it is almost time to reveal

The moderator function of The Citadel.

Special people that I like and that are nice to me and buy me presents will soon have the opportunity to edit and/or delete comments and submissions as described above. Still working on the "yours was a poor submission so we put it into the needs improvement database for refining and then you can resubmit it" database.

I already built this feature in, and I should be doing this, but it would be nice to have some help because obviously I am falling behind the power curve.

I have decided that DrPhluid will be given these rights as soon as I reteach myself how I implemented them. I am pretty sure all it will take is assigning the person to a group.

Drphluid, I hereby Dark Knight you in the name of (DVD-R) Strolen's Citadel. You are (FLAP PANEL MONITOR) hereby inducted into the (120GB HARD DRIVE) elite avant guard post haste in lieu therefore hereinto and forever forth.

May your judgement be unclouded, voice unhindered, and enter key unstuck. Carry forth and point and click.

    Sniff

I accept this nomination with all due humility

I want to thank all the little people who I have stepped on to get to this point… Um Thanks

I really don't think that making anonymous comments impossible is really necessary. So far, I haven't seen any misuse concerning that.

I am going to leave it. There was the one that dissappeared as soon as it was brought to my attention, and with others that can review them, any problems can be nipped earlier. I want to keep it.

I think that you a making a good choice. With moderators unleashed it should not be too hard to fix things that are inappropriate.
