  1. New Viewing Page Beta Release

    #1
A lot of experimenting ended up with this.

Will let it speak for itself. But it is beta so here are the notes associated with the current version.

The current header is a random file that is grabbed from a stock photo site. Sometimes they are surprisingly appropriate.

To get to the new page:
Whenever you are viewing any submission, add a "t" to "viewing" in the address bar to make it "/viewingt/" and you will see the current submission in the new format.

One of the major priorities was usefulness on phones/tablets.

    Things that don't work yet:
    -Comments
    -Email this Submission
    -Save to Favorites
-Social media buttons (not sure about these)
-Anything in the footer. Just for looking at.

    Things that do work
-Upvoting comments: should add the xp without issue

    -Search
Check that puppy out. May add Tags to it as well. Search for authors and submissions.

Things worth giving a quick try:

    https://strolen.com/viewingt/5_Room_Dungeon
--This link will show the possibility of a custom header
--Intent is to have default, custom headers for quests and main categories and other identifiable type submission. If an author wants to make their own header, that will be an options as well. Ideas for this are pretty open!

Still in mental anguish about some features and where to show them.

I am about 90% sure I am dumping the Golden votes and will instead use HoH count to develop the Goldens. Maintaining two systems gets to be too much when they serve a basic same purpose. I know they have different intents, but combining those intents for simplicity and a single button goes towards easier usage.

Voting. Wording is up for grabs. Yes, my intent is to go back to 5 levels of voting and dumping the .5s. One reason is to make it easier to slap a vote on it. Just click or tap and you voted. Want to change your vote, tap another one and the vote is updated. Pretty immediate and seamless. Not tagged with your comment or anything. Simple, quick and visual. Many really love the .5s but I have faith that you will be able to figure it out. A 1-5 scale is just simple with a better break between levels of the votes. .5s help pinpoint it but they also muddy it a bit. if you love it, vote a 5. If it is fine, vote a 3. Doesn't need to be an internal belly debate on giving it an extra .5. Debated going 3 but read a bunch of articles on voting and 5 is a happy place. That or a like button...but that is dumb. Who would do that?

Author block. You will all have a place in your Citadel Profile to add a quick little narrative about yourself. Will get rid of some of that statistical profile stuff, but had to put something in there for now.

Not sure I have much more to add at this point. I think I will spend November finishing it up and making it work. If I finish early I will move onto the homepage which is my next large update.

There is more in the works but not ready to let all the cats out of the bag.

Bug Hunt: Right now the obvious is pretty obvious so with this release, more looking for your ideas and thoughts on making features available than actual bugs that I probably already know about. The two gutters dissappear on small screen sizes to need to keep everything useful in the middle. I had a off canvas swipe menu but dumped it. It might find its way back but was trying to figure out how to do it all inline.

    5XP
for every usability bug you notify me of

    10-50XP
    for suggestions that improve usability

    25XP
for finding any feature that doesn't work as it should.

    100XP
for any major bug that causes issues with submissions/submission counts/votes/comments/etc... Basically on all stuff that has major repercussions on the work that authors submit.

    ???XP
Arbitrary awards based on the usefulness of suggestions.

    50XP
For creating a custom header (1900x400) for yourself or whatever.

The idea being pre-expanded and off-center looks odd to me. Expand it on a mouse-over or something :)
Same with the reply editor - both are wide open and makes it harder to scroll all the way to the bottom.

Also, the clip art backgrounds are .. funny. The SF Skyline somewhat jars with the cybernetic skull :P

I don't think I'm that hot about links on both top and bottom of page and different ones as well. I mean, top of the page is standard and fine but bottom of page I dislike cos it requires one to scroll all the way down the page. Might just be me though.

I must say I do like the new interface!

    More nits to pick:

2nd and subsequent Ideas are indented from the first.  https://strolen.com/viewingt/8294

1st # in the list is oddly rendered - the digit 1 is much larger, even though it is fully contained withing a strong tag along with the title and dash:

    1-For warmth
The most simple use for a scarf is what it was made for, to keep warm in cold weather.
2-To lower the risk of snow blindness
By cutting a couple of slits into it and

    Oh, and the irony:

"Unless the author wants an editor sytled review, please... "

lol. I mean this in jest, but it _is_ ironic.  Was it intentional?  :)

I see - it does this for the 1st character of any submission.

Urgh.... I looked and the blockquote looks very messy now (due to problem with font size/indentation) but my other recent sub on Tangrams doesn't seem affected.

I'm with Val on not liking the user-submitted ideas having indentation.

Indent was a fluke. Never saw it before that but I think I fixed it.
    Blockquote changed.
The first letter changing thing was a whim. Will let it sit for a bit but will remove if distracting to more than a couple posts.

Footer is completely experimental and tossed stuff in there to see if it would stick. Not sure I like any of it which is why it is all pretty raw still. I was half thinking that it might be the panel for the submission. All the odd stuff tossed in there somehow. Vote HoH. Email to a friend. Favorites. Add to Region. Edit. Challenge. Etc. Any kind of action you can do to a post besides Voting which will stay up there. Having trouble deciding where to put all that stuff. I had a right hidden menu that would open on swipe on a phone/tablet and by a button or swipe of mouse on a desktop. Wasn't sure I liked that though. Wanted to keep it all inline and simple if I could.....

Open to options of what we can put in there!

Thanks for the input so far! No time tonight but will give some XP for your thoughts and do a little more. Stomach is killing me tonight...probably too much candy. ;)

The image I have for the character is stretched in this format.

    I like the font.

At the bottom, just below the creative commons logo, is a row of broken pictures or something, all with a link to the article. And some further below on the left side.

I find the very bottom a bit busy.

I like the voting seals, and the meanings.

I don't like that you warn people how long my subs are before they even start reading. :P

I'm not big on the "Ideas" and "Comments" section headers going across the whole screen. They break through the established barriers and look out of place, IMO.

Just got back from a short notice trip where the stars at night are big and bright.

Give me a day or so to get resettled and will do some magic. :)

    Thanks for all your thoughts!!!
