Citadelian Leveling System
#1The leveling system we use today annoys me greatly.
To level up you have to write a gazillion subs, and so on and so forth and have that much xp and BLAH BLAH BLAH!
I propose what I perceive to be a better way:
Comment XP and Submission XP.
Leveling up as 2 different Classes.
Example of use:
ShadowPatrick has been an active Strolenite for 4 months. He has commented on over 100 submissions, but has yet to create one himself.
ShadowPatrick has 205 comment XP, and 0 submission XP.
ShadowPatrick is a level 4 Spectator.
Example of use:
LizardDude is an active Strolenite. He has been around for 15 months. He almost only comments on his own subs (no XP), and has written 12 Submissions.
LizardDude has 3 comment XP, and 120 submission XP.
LizardDude is a level 1 Spectator and a level 3 Creator
Just throwing this out there as I perceive the leveling system as extremely flawed.
Hope you guys agree, and come up with some of your awesome ideas. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#2Am I alone in this?
Strolen?
I believe the levels work, I just think they are broken right now. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#3I'm indifferent. I've been sitting on enough XP to get me up a couple more levels , but i should sub more :)
-
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#4I don't give a rats ass about my own XP.
But through the years, newbie after newbie has come along, wondering about the XP system, worrying about their next level.
The current XP system is in place to gratify even posters such as Scrasamax, but my wager is that none of us old ones give a fuck.
The young ones... The young ones care a lot.
So give them XP as commentators or creators.
Make them happy.
Make them go the extra mile. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#5I kind of agree with you AG. Make the leveling system something that induces and compels one to visit often and "do stuff". I don't know why but I'm thinking of Trivia Crack...compete with your friends, level up, have percentages, various shiny do-dads, etc. there's a reason they named it "crack". -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#6It should prompt user activity, not limit it.
The levels are way more important the lower you are. After breaking the Citadel when I maxed it out at twenty, levels and xp really are a non issue for me. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#7Scras did break the levels. I should have scrapped them at that point.
I based the leveling system on http://everything2.com/node/superdoc/The+Everything2+Voting%252FExperience+System?originalTitle=Voting%2FExperience%20System so you can blame them.
I am fine with whatever you all decide. But if you decide to change it, I expect a detailed explanation that I can implement in code vs. "Hey Strolen, you should fix it" type thing. Talking charts, levels etc. A blueprint of your chosen leveling system.
I simply have too many other higher priority things that I need to fix so would welcome the help and input on it. You will get my opinion, but if you all want this...it is *our* site so go for it.
I hold executive veto power though. :)

Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#8Easiest o would think would be to go by xp only, and boost sub xp awards. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#9Draft 0.1alpha
All users are monk-scribes of the Strolenati, and start with:
10 votes / day (we want them to vote, don't we?)
0 HoH
0 Golden (They don't really know what a golden sub is, do they?)
There are two career paths for the Strolenati, which are:
Way of the Exploding Commentary
Comment on your own sub +1 XP
Comment on other sub +5 XP
Vote on other sub +5 XP
In addition you get XP if others upvote your comments.
Commentators can comment and vote, more and more as their level progresses.
Path of the Enlightened Creator
Create sub +100 XP (big numbers for big deeds)
Plus whatever XP you get from HoH, votes, Golden, etc.
Jah or nah?

Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#10Nah, unless dual classing is allowed. I'll post a more cpmplete response after the morning school rush -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#11Okay, I'm not sure we need multiple classes, but we could add secondary titles which are appended to your base title.
So, you gain levels from XP like I mentioned before. If you achieve various totals of submissions, comments, forum entries, ideas, etc, you gain additional titles
eg. Thane Adept(6th level) ,Lord of Commentary (voted on 100 subs) , Adept Scribe of Lore (Submitted 10 submissions).
Parenthetic text not actually visible.

Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#12Hmmm... Keeping it as simple as we can, while rewarding our users... Not a bad idea, val. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#13Scras and Moonhunter could get titles that scroll of the page, like a monarch with an inferiority complex :)
Emperor of Submissions, Protector of Lands and Peoples, Prince-Bishop of Items and Plots, Sultan of Commentry, Grand Admiral of Freetext, King of the Forum,Ideas and chatbox, and the Defender of the Cult of Done.

Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#14You will also need a new, baldness leveling system. If you go to your profile and click on the level button you will see the current breakdown and permissions granted. Will need to rewrite that in your vision.
Then do we convert current xp to this system. Do we start from scratch? Do we do permissions and reset every 3 months?
I had the idea of diminishing xp through lack of activity. Lose xp when you don't visit our participate or something? -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#15I'm never really liked penalizing folks. What benefit is there to dropping people's levels/xp if their not active. I don't see the upside to that.
Forget the stick, just use the carrot, or you are kind of going against the whole 'friendly' part. Life happens, and someone who did care about their levels comes back and sees they've been demoted? ... That will end well.
I'd say specialized titles like moderator, or guild leaders, or such, where active participation is really needed should be dropped when someone is out for extended period though.
My suggestion would mean keeping the current level system with the submission requirement scrapped in favor of pure XP. Titles would be unlocked - really they are a rehash of badges - based on your activities.
Hmm. Maybe earning badges are what get you bonus votes, HOH's and other features. No levels at all? :)
So, Emperor of Submissions comes with 5 votes, 1 HOH, 1 Golden and a nice Crib page.
Want more votes? Earn more titles.
-
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#16Agree with val on the demoting part.
The stick will backfire in a bad way, I promise you. I tried that shit before, and people went batshit crazy.
Other than that...
Why would we want people of "low levels" to have few votes?
Votes is all we want. So let people give them out. Giiiive them ooout! -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#17Random thoughts here:
I agree on votes, but we need something to unlock. At the very least, HOHs, Goldens.
People like to put an exclamation point on their votes sometimes and want to use HOH's to do this.
Add Commendation when you vote? Acts like an HOH, but can be applied at the time of voting. Your common votes are free, but Commendations are limited.
What can we unlock? People go nuts for unlocks.
Steal from reddit - Flair. Get a custom icon, text, etc, whenever you comment on submission and maybe on your forum.
Custom backgrounds for your submissions different from the default?
also, so I don't lose it:
Articles: {Scribe, Head Scribe, Sage, Grand Sage, Most Highest Sage } of Articles
Dungeons: {Aspirant/ Keeper of Dungeons
Items: {Apprentice/Journeyman/Master/Guild Master/ Grand Master } Artificer
Lifeforms: {Tender,Lesser Warden,Greater Warden, High Warden, Sheriff } of Beasts
Location {Aspirant,....} Cartographer
NPC:
Plot:
Society:
System: Wizard
Comments:
Forum Comments:
Aaand, maybe we can merge the Guild concept we had going using forums.
-
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#18Agreed on the unlocks.
Also agreed on the badges / icons / whatever.
What about this:
"The Citadel is not only the name of the site. It is also a virtual organization. As people comment and submit, they move up in the ranks of the Citadel."
For instance:
1 Serf of the Citadel
Can comment and vote, 4 Hit Points
2 Freeman of the Citadel
Can comment and vote, 9 Hit Points
3 Swordman of the Citadel
Can comment and vote, 15 Hit Points
4 Pikeman of the Citadel
Can comment and vote, 25 Hit Points
5 Gatekeeper of the Citadel
Can comment and vote, and 1 HoH per day, 25 Hit Points
6 Armory Sergeant of the Citadel
Can comment and vote and 2 HoH per day, 40 Hit Points
7 Warden of the Moon Tower Outpost
Can comment and vote and 2 HoH per day, 1 Golden, 50 Hit Points
8 Warden of the Sun Tower Outpost
Can comment and vote and 3 HoH per day, 1 Golden, 55 Hit Points
9 Adept Strolenati Scribe
Can comment and vote and 4 HoH per day, 1 Golden, 55 Hit Points
10 Knight of the Citadel
Can comment and vote and 5 HoH per day, 2 Golden, 75 Hit Points
11 Knight-Commander of the Citadel
Can comment and vote and 5 HoH per day, 2 Golden, 100 Hit Points
12 Llama of the Strolenati
Can comment and vote and 5 HoH per day, 2 Golden, 125 Hit Points
13 High Llama of the Strolenati
Can comment and vote and 5 HoH per day, 2 Golden, 300 Hit Points
Then, Strolen willing, we add a mini-game where you get an "attack" button under other Strolenites names. Each attack does a certain amount of damage, and if the person "dies" he cannot comment any more that day.
But fear not, for each morning the warriors rise anew in Valhalla. To fight once more!
That would provide a useful method for venting anger between Strolenites, and remove said anger from the forum and comments.
It would also be a fun mini-game, and we could even have guild wars. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#19I second the not penalizing people for not being active, this is a creative site, not a freemium game dependent on daily log ins.
Unless you want to add some sort of daily log in bonus, which would more of a big deal for newer members.
As for the guild wars stuff, that's good. But how much coding would it take? Could you have equipment, stuff generated off of what you write. You write items, you have equipment, you write NPCs you have followers, and it could be based off of the XP of said contributions. Just throwing that out there, no idea how complex it would be to pull off.
We want people to be active, to want to level up. There has to be a reward suitable, without there being a penalty for not, because I don't people discouraged.

Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#20Guild wars could be a bolt on once we have a core XP system in place.
I do intend on doing Guilds and remove them from the forum. Something most anybody can create (if they have that right) and then have it tracked automatically with updates and such. That is after the initial core update that will happen this fall though. So, yes, think it, but we need the base XP system and how we want that to work before we get that far in the weeds.
I think val's idea with the main categories is probably doable without a ton of work too, fairly simple query and another leveling table probably.
-
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#21Yeah, keep it as simple as possible, without making it too simple. Because then it loses its allure.
Naive request #1:
Could you create a "Strolenati Class" field on the main site Author page?
Then people could choose Warrior, Thief, Cleric, Paladin, and so on?
Then we base levels and class on that, and get HP and attack power accordingly...
Yes, I will do the heavy lifting and design the system.
Yes, it will be simple and probably only require a tinsy bit of coding and a couple of tables in the db.
Naive request #2:
Can we do the same for guilds?
Then the Guild master approves or rejects initiates, etc.
An Idea could be the Strolenati vs. The Great Khan of the Barbarian horde, and then we get guild wars, etc.
Fun fun fun -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#22Seems to me all of that could be done under the same guild system but then have official guilds designated or something... -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#23Pardon me for asking, but what consequences would that have? What end result does your answer imply? -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#24Instead of having one set of rules and code for paladin etc and another one for guilds. Just do guilds and define paladin through the guild feature. Then in that singular guild feature we can then define some as official Citadel types with a flag which would show up as you want. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#25Ah, one class per guild. I see. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#26Well, the class would be a guild. I wouldn't have a class as a separate thing. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#27That works -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#28I see you guys got guilds already... You probably wanna run with that, amirite?
With that tool... Morningstar... We saw a level of disdain for us ancient Strolenites. He was actively dissing us, calling us names.
That is the equivalent of the disdain many feel for the established. Whether we like it or not, we are the established elite in this place, we are....
The Old Strolenati
The Current Strolenati text is lame. Let us make them more appealing, and appalling.
The Old Strolenati is the established elite; haughty, withered men playing their endless schemes and games. These parched husks do not want change and leech the life from those of the younger guilds. They thrive in the shadows of the buildings they once erected, and only a handful of them are active at any one time.
The Old Strolenati are powerful liches, and should you meet one - beware. For they are incredibly strong in their own right, and their magics has been known to repel more than one intruder.
SUMMING IT UP:
Old Strolenati are liches
Old Strolenati are us, the admins that have been here forever
Am I onto sumthin, or is this crap? -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#29Maybe. But we are also the only solution.
Can a liche be redeemed? I think so. Takes some powerful magic and the power of the gods.
I have a lot of work ahead of me rewriting the personality of the website. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#30That sounds a tad overly dramatic and gloomy Ole :P -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#31Just mean all the intro text and new tutorials and such. Trying to make it all more natural and fun. -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#32Give me epic dramas, or give me death! -
Re: Citadelian Leveling System
#33Leveling system however you come up with but how about this twist. We track XP and such by the month. End of the month we tally up big winners and save them on a leader board type thing that holds maybe a running 12 months. Top 5 every month is saved. All that XP goes to the overall XP total which drives the actual levels. But then it is reset to zero for the monthly tally.
That way even the newest newbie has a chance to beat anybody if they are active vs. now with Scrasamax king of everything all the time. He will still be king of everything (that is indisputable) but anybody has the chance to come out on top of the XP leaderboards each month.
Easy enough to track comment upvotes, Submission xp, bonus xp for quests and such. I don't know, whatever. Stats, man, stats!
