Google drive and technical questions
#1I'm a relatively new user of the Google drive and have the following 2 questions:
1. How do I check all the abbreviations for users up on the Google drive (for the purpose of updating the who's who thread here)?
2. How do I make it so that the equivalent of track changes appear on the Google drive? So far I've only seen Axle's changes on mine being track changed. All others are changes that overwrote the original. Fine for typos and grammar changes but less fine for change of wording etc. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#2I made direct changes to text so didnt use "Suggestions' .you would prob have to look at previus versions.I can do them as sugestions in the future,I'm prob the one that made it unclear -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#3I see changes in google docs - especially if you use the Comment and the Suggest modes.

Re: Google drive and technical questions
#4Oh, so it's the different modes, saw them but didn't know what they are for. All right, now I know. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#5Can't move V2 Faith to poetry Flolder, I think my Chrome book is not quite right(but you think it would be)
Tried EVERY combination of 'right clik" cant get damn thing to move! -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#6Axle moved it for you. I use Chrome too but I just left-click and drag like I do on my PC when moving stuff around. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#7Not an urgent question but just out of curiousiy: what does the commenting allow one to do on the Google drive that one can not do under the other 2 modes? I mean, you can insert comments in the editing and suggesting modes too but what makes the commenting mode not a redundant function? -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#8Think of it as added ability, not different ability.
Viewers can read.
Commentors can read and leave comments.
Editors can read, comment and edit. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#9Ah, thanks for explanation. I keep thinking of them as different abilities because they are called "modes" which suggests to me that each is a sort of standalone option so I thought each must have some sort of unique value to be labelled as a separate mode. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#10There ARE a few options which are independent of those modes, which I believe the owner sets. Like the owner can set it so readers and invite other reader, or set it so they can't, and so that people can make copies for their own use, or not make copies. -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#11You know what, Longspeak? I just realised that in effect I had asked a stupid question cos the 3 modes were actually viewing, suggesting and editing but somehow when I asked my question, I thought that commenting is a mode rather than just a function from the drop-down. Anyhow, that's why despite having done an Information Systems degree and doing coding on a daily basis as part of my job, I still suck at IT related stuff (consistent with my expectations, I only ever got H3 or credit for my IS degree anyway, which was also what I had aimed to get cos I was head over heels in love with Economics as a uni study. It turned out to be an infatuation but ah well.) -
Re: Google drive and technical questions
#12On the G drive, I've noticed that for some of us, opening up a doc for the first time creates an additional copy of said doc in the same location. Usually what happens is that the copy opens up a G doc version of the original by default whereas the original doc is stuck in a 'read-only' mode that does not use G doc by default. I've noticed that it happened with Fan once on sth I uploaded and now I have this problem with Maggot's story. Also, another thing I've noticed is that the copy is somehow accessible only to myself and I have to share it with everyone else on G drive again rather than it being a default option if I uploaded a new doc to G drive. Anyone can enlighten me as to what's going on?
