  1. Citadel Quiz #3

    #1
As the winner of Round 2, I pick up the challenge to host Quiz #3

    (applause, waving, gracious smile)

Question 1, and remember, no Google, no cheating.

In the 1993 movie Jurassic Park, the terrified survivors were harassed and murdered by a pack of 'velociraptors'. Shortly after the movie was released, paleontologists discovered a dromaeosaur that matched the 'velociraptors' from the movie. What was the name given to this new predatory dinosaur?

Fun fact, here is the information representing a velociraptor accurately. Dig them feathers, yo!

No takers? No dino-nerds here? I am disappoint.

The answer is Utahraptor. The first fossils were discovered in 75, but weren't completely identified as belonging to a raptor until 91. There was an attempt to name the predator Utahraptor Spielbergi due to his financial support of paleontology but as numbers could be never be decided on, it was eventually named Utahraptor ostrommaysorum, in 1993.

    Question #2

What was the name of the black doctor in charge of development in Terminator 2? (the character, not the actor)

In Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, what is the significance of that temperature? Bonus half point if you know why that answer is wrong.

Books/paper catch fire. Why it's wrong I'm not sure. I guess it's -not- the right temperature? :)

Correct on both, according to the book, that is the temperature when paper will ignite. This isn't true, as paper A. isn't prone to spontaneous combustion, and B. that's not the temperature of burning paper (a cigarette typically is 'smoldering' at 500 degrees)

I was abducted by aliens and they stole my brains, and only just returned them. Aramax picks up the win, and the answer to the bonus question was Arnette Texas, not to be confused with Arlen Texas of King of the Hill fame.

For being "robots in disguise," that is not very subtle.
  24. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #24
Barricade is a police cruiser, but I would like the manufacturer and model.
  25. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #25
I want to say Ford impala, but not really sure.
  26. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #26
In Transformers, Barricade is a Ford Mustang police cruiser. This is significant as one of the big sponsors of the movie was GM, and the fight between Bumblebee and Barricade is symbolic between the fight between the Camaro and the Mustang, which started back in 1966. (Bumblebee was actually rolled out as part of the relaunch of the Camaro line, and as such the car in the movie is NOT a Camaro, but a mock up Camaro shell on an Impala chassis.)

What kind of pistols does Kate Beckinsdale carry in Underworld?
  27. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #27
I googled this because not only don't I know, but I don't recall anyone in the movie ever making a point of it. Like, I can tell you what Riggs and Murtaugh both use in Lethal Weapon because they actually discuss it. And everyone knows what Dirty Harry uses. Hell he makes a speech about it. Twice. In the same movie.

But in this movie? They never discuss it and I'm too busy looking at Kate to notice the guns, even if I were able to ID most guns on sight. :)

The Deathdealer carried a pair of Beretta 93R automatic pistols, and she has the honor of being the female holder of rhe most bullets fired in one movie.

    Who was Kaizer Soze?
  29. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #29
A mysterious slavic(?) crime leader possibly portrayed by Kevin Spacey.

  30. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #30
This is more opinion, But Keyser Soze was a legend created by Spacey's character, IIRC named Verbal Kint or something, a boogie man he could use as the public "face" of his own criminal organization. Either way, we was a ruthless badass crime boss.

Is that some sort of game on bookface or facewall or whatever?
  34. Re: Citadel Quiz #3

    #34
    Nay, tis much worse.

I am breaking sod and turning soil to plant a garden in my backyard. I have boxes ready, and boxes to build to house root vegetable that don't like my heavy clay rich soil, like carrots and potatoes. I've been landscaping, mulching, cutting bushes, and hauling away yard debris.

I need to get on these things, my corn seedlings are closing on being a foot tall, and they are still in a seedling tray on a table in my kitchen.

I am growing a yard full of heirloom, rare, and other unusual crops.

My potatoes are purple, my carrots come in five different colors, I have four varieties of corn, ranging from black, to Aztec/Olmec green, to glass gem. It's all weird, rare stuff that you can't go buy at the grocery story.

I got green cauliflower (not broccoli) from Lithuania.

    Ghost peppers from Malaysia

    It's bonkers, it's freaking bonkers.

It's kicking my ass and I go to sleep worn out, but I can't wait to get up and start again, and I get mad when I have to stop and go to real work and make socks. I have work to do, real work, to do. I am doing this by hand, I don't have a tractor, or a tiller. This is all shovel and hoe, and all that.

It pleases me. It soothes me.

And I am jealous. I still have so much snow on the ground I expect it to be June before I mow my lawn again. Or do anything remotely agricultural. On the bright side, I plan to put in deer fencing for part of my lot at least, so there is a chance I could plant something edible.

Sounds like quite the charrie sheet. Sock maker class and farmer build. Hope the obligatory fallout shelter is doing dandy?  :P

I've got a ...quiz? Question? Riddle? Thingie? Actually, so uh. Hope it's okay if I chip in here.

Seriously? Granted I'm reading a translated version, but I haven't found the series to be in any way bad. This is my third time re-reading them in fact. For one thing, they are a veritable font of fantasy sounding names. He seems to have a penchant with name-dropping like 10 new people for every other chapter or so. But noooo, that was not what I was going for.

The answer was Mat Cauthon, by Queen Tylin of Ebou Dar. And it was played for laughs.
