Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#2I can never pull of NaNa in November, too many distractions that I cannot get out of, frequent overtime, family obligations at Thanksgiving, and other things of that nature. -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#3I've got a story idea, at least. I'm willing to give it a shot, even if I don't make the 50,000 mark.
I'll commit if someone else commits! -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#4I was having trouble figuring out just what kind of tale to tell. But, thankfully, Muro got bored in chat and began spouting out random words (I love it when he does that). Here's a snippet of the convo for reference (mainly mine):
(18:23:23) MysticMoon: I was so set on doing NaNoWriMo this year. Let's see how coherent I am come the 1st
(18:23:32) Murometz: do it!
(18:23:40) Murometz: writing makes a writer
(18:24:01) Murometz: (im better at giving advice than recieving or practicing it :P)
(18:24:25) MysticMoon: That's ok, though. Sometimes that bit of cheerleading is enough to push me over the edge
(18:25:21) Murometz: Salacious Centaurs....go!!!
(18:25:32) Murometz: and Mimas
(18:25:38) Murometz: also, Fruit Fly
(18:25:47) MysticMoon: You giving me random words to use?
(18:25:53) Murometz: sort of lol
(18:26:02) Murometz: i mean, yes
(18:26:06) MysticMoon: Salacious Centaurs on Mimas?
(18:26:11) Murometz: and fruit flies
(18:26:13) MysticMoon: That could actually be kinda fun
(18:26:27) MysticMoon: Old school space opera pulp / b-movie goodness
(18:26:41) Murometz: "cheese rind" must *somehow* appear in the sub, *somewhere*
(18:26:49) MysticMoon: Evil fruit fly race that's holding the moon hostage
(18:26:56) MysticMoon: THeir scientists are mad geniuses
(18:27:08) Murometz: what the hell kinda fruit are they eating, man? lol
(18:27:16) Murometz: i want some
(18:27:18) MysticMoon: It was a cheese rind dipped in atomics that changed them
(18:27:26) Murometz: hmmm
(18:27:57) MysticMoon: Salacious Centaurs is the name of the merc company come to take the moon back
(18:28:16) Murometz: now you're cooking with gas!!
(18:28:28) Murometz: its a go
(18:28:53) Murometz: cheese-rind needs re-work :P
(18:29:25) Murometz: one more word...Lagubrious
(18:29:29) MysticMoon: You don't like the atomic cheese rind?
(18:29:48) Murometz: and lastly, Aeromancy
(18:30:01) Murometz: im not loving it lol
(18:30:23) MysticMoon: The fruit flies have made the moon rather lugubrious. They prefer things all dark and dismal
(18:30:25) MysticMoon: Hmm
(18:30:38) Murometz: right, i meant how you spelled it :)
(18:30:49) MysticMoon: Thank ninjawords :P
(18:30:57) MysticMoon: http://ninjawords.com/Lagubrious
(18:31:17) Murometz: LOL
(18:31:42) Murometz: cant wait to use it in rp
(18:31:49) MysticMoon: Aero Nancy is the buxom head of the Salacious Centaurs
(18:32:01) Murometz: go on
(18:32:31) MysticMoon: She got curves and brains. Don't mistake her name for someone air headed
(18:32:48) MysticMoon: Even if she likes it when people underestimate her
(18:33:05) Murometz: needs a twist then we bank her
(18:33:28) MysticMoon: The lead evil fruit fly doctor killed her lover
(18:33:35) MysticMoon: In a bombing attack
(18:33:37) Murometz: does she have a peculiar speaking voice? Does she have tourettes? Is she heartbroken secretly?
(18:33:48) MysticMoon: She's out for blood
(18:34:16) MysticMoon: Peculiar speaking voice. I like that
(18:34:29) MysticMoon: Like Jennifer Tilly
(18:34:31) Murometz: wait, back up a sec...whats salacious mean again? something raunchy right?
(18:34:37) MysticMoon: Yeah
(18:34:38) Murometz: :P
(18:34:45) Murometz: ok
(18:34:57) MysticMoon: Mercs get lusty, don't they?

(18:35:52) Murometz: in awe
(18:36:44) Murometz: of Jennifer Tilly sub
(18:36:54) MysticMoon: Who wouldn't be?
(18:37:04) Murometz: i recommend "Bound" for all those poor saps who *havent* seen it
(18:37:17) MysticMoon: I'm a sap who has seen it ;)
(18:40:19) MysticMoon: Assault on Mimas
(18:40:45) Murometz: Assault on Mimas is fucking perfect!!!!
(18:43:44) Murometz: Mark Chaos is a great name for a some-kinda-rp hero
(18:44:20) Murometz: better than Indiana Jones
(18:44:43) Murometz: or Rhode Island Smith
(18:44:49) MysticMoon: Heh
(18:45:41) MysticMoon: Sounds like a chicken :P
(18:45:52) Murometz: :P
(18:46:26) Murometz: South Carolina Johnson?
(18:47:10) MysticMoon: Illinois DuBois
(18:47:19) Murometz: is DuBois common?
(18:47:24) MysticMoon: No idea
(18:47:30) Murometz: me neither
(18:47:43) Murometz: its definitely a go-to in rp french name circles :)

(18:48:40) MysticMoon: "It's pronounced Illi-nwa, ma'am"
(18:49:19) Murometz: he says as he adjusts his revolvers and watches Herr Kohler ascend in his private plane
(18:49:38) MysticMoon: I can see it all so clearly
(18:49:53) MysticMoon: Red sky of dusk painted on the clouds
(18:49:58) Murometz: KALIMAAAAAAAAH!!!!
(18:50:17) MysticMoon: You have betrayed Shiva :P
(18:50:29) Murometz: lol
(18:50:51) Murometz: everything with Shia LeBoeuf in it, sucks.
(18:51:00) Murometz: just sayin
(18:51:12) MysticMoon: I take that as a given
I'll make something more coherent out of this later. Just wanted to get the basics down.
Add to that some good ol' Golden Oldie Rock 'N Roll, some Psychobilly, the mush floating around in my brain from reading '45 Psychobilly Retropocoalypse, thoughts of old fashioned diners, prop planes that turn into rocket ships, beer and burgers, and whatever other randomness decides to visit my brain, and I think I got enough to get started come Saturday. -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#5Excellent! Shall we use this thread for daily status updates then? -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#6Oh, most certainly. As soon as I figure out a where, I intend to post my daily work and link to it from here. I'm thinking maybe some Wordpress blog. Whatever it is, I'll need to get it ready today. -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#7Nanowrimo.. it always calls to me. I didn't have things ready when the bell rang. I am already 2000 words behind. I will let you know if I get it. -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#8Here at the stew more than a few of us are fans of Scrivener, not just as a writing tool but also as a gaming prep tool. In particular, I’m a big fan of its innovative corkboard and ability to free form ideas–“Scrivenings”–into any order you’d like on the fly. The ability to customize the sections to hold custom information, such as character or location data, is also a big draw. As is normally the case this time of year, Literature & Latte are having a sale on Scrivener to go hand-in-hand with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). You can save 50% by completing your book in October (honor system!) or take an attractive 20% off. In addition, a special trial edition of Scrivener is available that is feature complete through December 7th.
Got this off the Gnome Stew newsletter. I have Scrivener and LOVE it. Look up some reviews and see if it is worth it to you. If you write in Word or some other monster text editor...you should give this a look and see how this can totally change your organization and flow...in a good way. -
Re: NaNoWriMo 2014
#9I've played with the trial version of Scrivener before and it is pretty cool. Also, that is a pretty sweet deal. I'll give it some thought between now and when I (hopefully) finish. My only real hesitation is that I have my own system of text files in a DVCS (allowing me to keep a copy of the repo on all the various machines I use) using Markdown format that I can easily convert to whatever format I need.
In any case, I only made about 740 out of my 2000 word goal yesterday. Well, technically, I wrote over 2000 words, it's just that most of them went toward my Ghost sub (that I had to get out of my head before I could start the novel).
So... first words written for this year's NaNoWriMo are posted at https://alfkin.net/campfire/assault-on-mimas-01/. With any luck, I'll be able to crank out 2000 words much earlier in the day today, rather than waiting until the last minute like I did yesterday.
