  1. 30 unusual punishments

    #1
I'm planning ones that are different from the normal fines, imprisonments and executions. Some could be sadistic, others could be light ones, or not be seen as a punishment by most people but are a great source of shame by those affected. :twocents:

    So far...

1-Having to act the role of the other gender-often male to female, but in amazon tribes or drow cities, it could be the other way around.
2-Being sent into the fields-Mao had this done to many of China's educated people in real life.
3-Not allowed to carry weapons. If the punished one has the right to bear arms, losing this right is going to be pretty shameful. In real life many of the samurai revolted when told they were no longer allowed to carry swords.
4-Name Change-Having one's name and appearance changed and being sent somewhere else and forbidden to say who he/she was on pain of a far worse punishment. Can be used with punishment number 1 but not always.
5-Horrid Job. Such as cleaning out the sewers.
6-Sitting on one's cloak. Amongst the real life Templar Knights, it was seen as a sign of shame to have to sit on one's cloak when eating. Perhaps another order of knights has this rule.
7-The Songpit (created earlier as a submission)
8-Made to fight one or more bouts as a gladiator
9-Made to work as an undertaker for X amount of time.
    10-Banned from using magic

    Does anyone have other ideas?

11, Forced to entertain one or more minor nobles/influential people as a jester or bard for several hours. (if that acts not amusing it could lead to an even worse fate.)

    12. Assigned to the role of taste tester for the nobility. (If assassination attempts are common or the kings favorite foods  especially foul, 1.e pickled pigs feet, the job would certainly qualify as punishment.

    13. Grave digging/execution platform clean up.

    14. Assist the tax collector on his weekly/monthly rounds.

    15. The "quarry" for a "live hunt" by the city guardsman to practice less than lethal prisoner apprehension. (Better hope those nets don't wrap around your neck somehow!)

    16. Assignment to duty aboard a sailing vessel until such time as it returns to port. (Depending on the vessel this could be weeks to months or even years.)

    17. Conscription in the military ranging from a few years to life.

    18.  Revocation of their family crest and its replacement with a chicken, pig, or other "weak" creature.

    19. A bard hired to compose one or more embarrassing (but true?) sonnets about the individual to be presented at the next royal feast for all to hear. (And the wages for said bard coming from the punished individuals coffers)

    20. Granting of a land holding in a distant and hostile region of the kingdom, with expectations of profit and prosperity by the assigned knight/noble before three years have passed.

21-Made to look after small bratty children for X amount of time.
22-Having to wear the scold's bridal for a day
23-Made to wear bells around one's ankles
24-Made to punish your best friend with a whip
25-Given a drug that reacts badly with alcohol and lasts for a week.
26-Having one's weapon broken-can go together with 3 but not always.
27-Treated like a 9 year old child for a week-can go with 1 but not always.
28-Made to work as a coin thrall for a week
29-Made to wear a hair shirt for a week
30-busted down to prospect if in a guild/gang, has to do all the small/annoying tasks.

Expect a new 30 soon. Thank you Silveressa. :)

You left off one of the worst and most memorable punishments for Dwarves!

#31. Having their beard shaved in front of the entire dwarven clan.

#32. Being forbidden to grow a new beard for X number of days/weeks/years. (Often added to punishment #31 but not always.)

That reminds me of a punishment inflicted upon an elf in an old fantasy game I played in. The elf she had professed her love for a human, even over the objections of her family and the council of elders (yes, very LOTORish of her,  ) Was sentenced to have her ears cut to a rounded shape that resembled a humans, with the councils decree of "If you choose to love a human and forsake our kind they so shall you look as they do!"

The resulting fight by her beloved to spare her the mutilation resulted in a full on fight to the death and daring escape by the party, and later sparked an entire war with the elven nation and  human kingdom of Athasaria; mostly because her beloved was a royal knight of Athasaria and during the rescue the group lead by him, happened to kill a few of the high elven council when our negotiation attempt imploded, ("Elves do not treat with honorless round ears!") but they also claimed we kidnapped our rescued elven companion.

Ten lashes on a bared back and forced to work in the salt mines.

("Oh, rip the shirt! How cliche'!")
