Voting -- Again
#1I have a couple things in my notes and I will be redoing the submission page this week so have a couple thoughts. All pretty easy to do at any time so I am not rushing this by any means.
Voting. We are in a decade plus on it so we are sort of sticking with that. We all HATE voting but it is kind of a necessary evil. So not going to really debate that.
However, what we use it for is always up for discussion.
Browsing submissions. Do we still want the votes showing when we browse by category or searching for an idea? Do you use the votes as discriminators? Even if you do, would it piss you off if you had to take the title and summary on its own merit and decide to just visit it by that?
I am hiding the vote value by default on the new viewing submissions. I like concentrating on the content for now and cleaning up all the data that is scattered everywhere right now. Attention is pulled left and right vs. to reading the sub.
But here is a few thoughts that I reread in my "to do" lists.
1) A button that basically says "I used this" Nothing else, just that. We all are curious and that is a better indicator of value in some case.
2) But thinking that, why not put "I would use this" as a button instead. Then you have those that vote a 3 maybe but click they would use it. Others may vote a 5 but not use it. So it is different and maybe a better indicator of value than the vote? But what do you do with the thousands of older subs that won't get highlighted on the frontpage.
So don't know about that. I like the idea and maybe we just do it and deal with the circumstances.
Then I was thinking. What if we dumped the vote for a simple "Like". Then subs will only have a + for how many likes
Long ago decided we will NOT have downvotes...evaaaar. That sucked!
But then I think too much change and if we don't like it we are back in a deficit compared to the old subs that did have the opportunity of voting...
By the end of my thought process I am back to not changing anything except hiding votes in some cases.
Any thoughts on all that? -
Re: Voting -- Again
#2Anybody know the rotten tomatoes site's rating? They seem to have something a little different with two ways to put value on a movie. Haven't looked to hard at it...
(Noticed that when the stupid chat had me figuring out what Wongo was? WTF? Women of Wongo? People still watch that kind of stuff? LOL) -

That's Wild Woman of Wongo, yes. MysticMoon and I enjoy doing our own version of MST3K in chat, with cheesy movies we find. Dude, you liked Robin Hood the series. How can you criticize anything? -

Interesting, the only question I have the concern that this will push some submissions with few reviews down (possibly ensuring that they don't get any more views (I've got a few that have only one comment/vote, and some that have none) and that its going to take subs that generate a lot of traffic and push them to the top, like that SIEGE goat thing that's hot right now.
I guess I'm saying I'm concerned its going to reward subs that generate buzz rather than quality, because nothing brings out the commenters like a bad sub, or a stupid sub.
I do like the idea of the 'I used this' button option. Would that be something that we would let the BH have access to? I also like the idea of the submissions also having a 'Like' button, which again, I could see the BH using. There are lots of people coming here, they are looking at stuff, but they aren't registering, because maybe they aren't writers, and they don't want to critique other writers, they just want RPG swag and ideas.
So I am floating the idea of giving the horde access to Liking and an I used this button so that the writers can see when people like their stuff but aren't interested in becoming Citadellians. -
Re: Voting -- Again
#6I do not think we should hide the votes.
When browsing for subs -such as epub content, I do use the rate as a metric. If I don't have it, than that will make things a LOT harder.
It has its warts, but it is useful. The votes, once there are more then a couple, tend to be right IMHO.

What about some sort of a compromise, until X number of votes are garnered (say 3?) the votes are obscured, but after that it goes into open viewing. -
Re: Voting -- Again
#8I would be good with that. -
Re: Voting -- Again
#9Make it 5...and retroactive.
New list to force votes to view votes. A whole new era of user manipulation to comment and vote!

#10Force votes to view votes.
Wow, I think that can work! Would be an awesome psychological experiment as well! :cthulhu: -

Split the difference with 4, and make it so.
And I like the Making it Retroactive idea. -
