Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#1Alright. I want a thread of my own!!! :aar:
I started reading all the others, but there was so much text, I started feeling sick.
This here is where I communicate with the lords of the citadel concerning work I intend to do.
Not work you others intend to do.
Work I intend to do.
This is my ego corner.
****
Right now I am into Android development and serverside development. I want to continue down that path.
1.
The Generators are awesome, but Chaosmark and I are not on the same page when it comes to coding. We use different platforms, different tools, different everything.
Still, I'd like to think I might possibly help with those. I was planning to create an uber-generic generator platform that could be used by admins and users to create whatever generator they'd wish. I haven't read what Chaosmark has written, I just thought he had that base covered and wandered off to do other stuff.
Still, if Chaosmark's Generators wind up being targetted at a specific type (i.e. City Generators, Car Generator, Encounter Generator, Dungeon Generator, Plot Generator or whatever), do contact me Strolen, and I can start working on some of my own.
Would an android based Generator be cool?
Like insta-roleplay, in the GM's pocket.
2.
PbP GM and Player tool
PbP is so effing asynchronous!!!!!
I want Strolen's to be a kickass PbP site.
I want the roleplaying hungry players and GMs of the world to come crawling to the Citadel for their roleplaying fix!
I want an APP.
This app, an android app to begin with, is connected to the PbP section of the Citadel (which I will also create).
PbP Tool Wishlist:
The option to create a PbP group, and designate which citadel users are players, what they are currently playing and who the GM is.
Inside the tool, the players appear as their PC, not as themselves, when they are stating something IC
The possibility to create targeted dice rolls, meaning that the players roll a certain set of dice, and tag them with what they are for. The GM is then made aware of that throw
App Wishlist:
The app notifies the GM (and players) what players have done in the PbP tool of the citadel
The app enables instant communication between players and the GM, also when not on the site. This to speed up the game.
The app also has a dice roller

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#2Point the First: It didn't necessarily start out that way, but at this point it's definitely shaping up to be what you were wanting. We build the basic generator types, then let the userbase run wild with their own datasets/generators.
Point the First, subsection "app": Would it be feasible to have said app talk with the Citadel through an API to get generator results, or were you thinking more that it has the generators that it can run locally?
Point the Second: WANT.
Also, would the PbP allow online organization/display of campaign content (maps, overheard rumors, deep IC background, etc.), or is that outside the bounds of what you're aiming for? -

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#4Reminded me about the subaccounts mod.
(by the way, I read the post 3 times...drooled...chased my tail, caught it, realized I don't have a tale and then came back and realized I had the subaccounts mod loaded at one point. Did research, it is old but still works, will load it now.)
Anyway..
Not sure how to cross the OS bridge but as long as we can get you into the database, we can figure out the rest and I am sure you have thoughts floating around already anyway.
Just tell me what you need!!
(installing subaccount mod now) -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#5if you have some sort of web service api, preferably returning json objects... well, that would be sweet and dandy! -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#6That is easy enough. :) -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#7will use my own data structure in dev and test.
I'll come back to you when I am ready for trial number one. -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#8SWEET! -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#9Ok.
I will put pressure on myself.
I will send the first PM to you on the 10th of December, 2013, detailing my work and how close I am to 100% done.
My aim is to be at 100% on the 10th, though that is a stretch.
Might as well start applying pressure. -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#10PM nothing. Post the link to the download in the android store so we can grab it on the 10th!
:) -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#11So exciting this! I titillate!

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#12Everyone seems to have a birthday around here, and that meant sat-sunday without proper coding.
Tomorrow is difficult too, so I'd have to say ETA + 2.5 days = December 12.5th -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution <-- Strolen. Notice this thread.
#13Finally got some traction on this one.
The dice buttons are about finished.
Strolen:
I plan on saving the results with the following database fields:
StrolenatiID = ID at the citadel, mine is 1148
PbpID = Unique ID for the forum game. NOTE: Another table holds who plays in the game, and who is the GM.
DiceRoll = What kind of dice was thrown. 2d20, 1d10, 1d20, 1d100, etc. Nullable.
DiceResult = What the dice amounted to. 23, 4, 14, 54, etc. Nullable.
Comment = A comment attached to the roll, or standalone. Nullable.
Can you make a table for these, and a JSON web service for pushing the values from my server to yours?
The app works this way:
1. Open app
2. Roll dice
3. App contacts REST service on my server
4. My server A) Returns result to APP, B) Push result to Strolen's Citadel PbP Web Service
This way we can easily integrate app results into Strolen.com.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#14I can set that up to get something working. Will tr and knock it out tonight. I have a late night at work but I should be able to get to this.
Once we get this working then, is the intent to get it into the forum?
Can the DM set up a dice roll required perhaps?
So we are in a thread and we require some rolls. If the GM could set up what rolls are required with the comments and each person has to go make the rolls with his prompt, then the GM can assign that post message as the ID for the rolls to associate them not only with the game, but with the specific forum message roll requirement.
Then they use the app and do the rolls and the GM could call the message ID that was his in forum prompt using some bbcode which will drag in all the rolls he requested. He could call my roll ID and user ID as well to isolate the values if needed too. Or just another app interface where he can see the rolls to base his next post on.
Then you can use the webapp or the app you are making to make those rolls as well as the GM to review them.
GM: You are attacked. Everybody needs to roll initiative attack and damage.
Game ID is 45678 and message ID is 34567 and he puts those in bbcode that creates a link to the app and/or webapp. Each player uses the app, rolls get saved to database. GM pulls up rolls from message ID 34567 and has all the roll of each player in the post for his review. He can imbed them in the forum post if he wants or just review them to base his actions on.
? Just thoughts.
I kinda see this too.
Roll + comment
The player can roll, see his result and then comment.
So if I am rolling to hit. I roll a 2, then I can add a comment that describes my miss.
The baddy hits, describes his damage.
Not sure how useful that is but if you have battle sequence and it is roll heavy (and people can possible roll a bunch of rolls at once and they are brought in as needed by the GM) then with the rolls and comments you can bring all that in as a sequence of events almost by calling IDs in initiative order in bbcode too. Not explaining well as I am off to work, but just throwing some random thoughts out there)

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#15It would be nice if the pbp and app could work together in a seamless manner - forgive me if this is already clear, or perhaps asking much.
A new Tag - named specifically to work with AG's app, but also acts as a spoiler tag for normal rendering. So it would be possible for a GM to work with the system without having the app, while the players could.
[Roll player=playername die=diespec/]
This puts a pending die roll in the system
Ideally, all of the logic available in the app could also be invoked within the PBP posts.
[Register GM=GMname/]
Upon submitting this post, it would create a new PBP game in the database registered to the GM cited.
Post name BackToTheFront
[Register GM=valadaar/]
[Register Player=someperson/]
[Register Player=someotherperson/]
GMs could place requests for actions
[Dieroll Player=valadaar Die=1d6/]
[Response Player=valadaar Question="Do you open the fucking door?"]
Players could respond to the pending die roll requests with
[DieRoll Die=1d6 Result=4/]
either by putting this in a post, or by using the app which would create the post - I assume by prompting the user for the text of their post as well.
Inventory on PBP can be a pain. Add inventory management?
[Additem player="valadaar" text="A Broken Broadsword" number="1"]
[DeleteItem player="valadaar" text="A Broken Broadsword" number="1"]
[DisplayInventory player="valadaar"/] Just list inventory
[SetStatistic player="valadaar" name="Goldplating" value="120"/]
[RemoveStatistic player="valadaar" name="Goldplating" value="120"/]
AGMagic blocks would only be parsed/processed on the first post - updates to the post would not be reinterpreted.
Perhaps add some PBP post helpers that create standardized boiler-plate posts like rule sets and the like :)

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#16WOW! I love this! You guys have so many brilliant ideas!
Strolen:
An integration with the forum would be sweet. Your tag based approach is alright, as long as you populate a data table that my services can poll regularly to check for updates.
This is the architecture I have in mind:
APP / Client layer:
***************
A) Android App
or
B) Web Client (Forum based tags and/or chat client)
not full clients, but reminder type functionality:
C) Email alerts
or (future)
D) SMS alerts (In the future I am gonna use a SMS vendor for my company, so might as well enable SMS alerts for this app then.)
---------------------
Middleware (AG controlled server code)
1. Push and pull based json web server queries
2. Business layer (dice management, communication between GM and players)
---------------------
Server (Strolen controlled server code)
1. Datalayer (persistence, pbp forum integration)
2. Pull based JSON web server queries (delivers data on demand to the middleware)
The middleware will poll Strolen's web service very often, perhaps every 30th second. It will check for new messages, and forward it to the proper persons (based on which gameID the message has).
The middleware will also push new dice rolls and comments from the chat client into Strolen's database using Strolen's JSON API.
The middleware also has an API that Strolen can use when creating the forum integration.
*********
valadaar:
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!
Strolen, there must be something we can do with inventory?
Hmmmm...
Could we come up with a Strolen's CHAR sheet thingie?
We could even go above and beyond PBP's with the char sheet.
We could become a universal host for character sheets of all kinds!!!
Keep track of XP, Fate Points, hit points, equipment, etc, etc, etc for the roleplayers on the planet!
It does seem like a step on our path to world domination.
Or we could just do a simple inventory list?
The middleware layer also has a database, but keeping the data on Strolen's would be a cleaner approach.

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#17I think some of this stuff would do better as a pop-up of some kind with buttons and actions you can do to fill in blanks and set dice rolls more through a UI than a complex set of bbcode. Once you do it all, perhaps the submit will give you an ID of the event you did to call what parts you need back into the forum?
Not sure. We need to keep it as simple as possible, the UI anyway, and try and put dumb buttons in place.
I like the thoughts, but it needs to be easy to manage without exhaustive tutorials. I like the direction...how do we harness it for ease of use on the webpage and in the app?
I authorized the custom profile fields, but that is a universal solution for every person. But you can add whatever stats and such you want and then call them into the profile section of the post. When people have a RP subaccount, they can build a character sheet using custom profiles. But custom profiles are one size fits all for the forum.
Character sheets are cool too as a future thought. World domination and all that! -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#18Your thoughts regarding the UI are valid and sound.
The UX must be complete, as close to Apple standards as we can get.
The APP UI is coming together. There are two text areas. One for writing, one where all messages and dice rolls are shown. Also I have created a button for each type of dice, and... Wow... It is already complex to describe.
I will create v1.0 alpha, and post some pictures of it very soon.
Then we can discuss what to change from there.

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#19Also, what about this idea:
The PbP tool (whether APP or Web Client), posts into the forum game as a Citadel user of its own.
We could call the PbP tool something fancy, and posts made by it could be hidden until a mouse over. Of course, if the entire post made by the PBP tool had another color theme, like a white rectangle or some other fancy CSS stuff to make it stand apart... Well that would be nice.
Then we could just work from the PBP Tool, and then publish to the forum thread. -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#20Regarding character sheet domination, I suspect there is a careful dance to dance to avoid any copyright issues. We would have to be sure to be generic and not provide any built-in text that was not completely open.
Mind you, I am certainly on board with it - only we need to be careful :)
Also, could spoilers be made to be user specific? That way what normally would be included in a PM could exist in-line in the post, removing the need to exit the forum to get an update.
Perhaps this would be something this MasterOfTheCitadel (MOTC) could do. -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#21Almost like PMs that are inline with the submissions maybe?
The person lists who he wants to see the subs and then it is only viewable to them? -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#22Excellent! -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#23Exactly.
Not the sub, but sections within. The GM can tailor the description so that only specific players can see parts it, and this should be kept to a minimum to preserve the story.
It could also be used to post asides NPCs tell them, etc. Pure meta-discussion that played no part in the 'story' probably should remain in pm due to the next option:
Perhaps a flag could later be set to make all hidden tags public at the end of the campaign.

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#24Nothing of importance to add here, except that I'm absolutely loving this. Keep it up gents! -
Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#25Sorry. Last night sucked. Will get that json thing working so we can punch that part in the face and move on!! I should be less saturated tonight so this is my only goal. -

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#27url: readpostplay.com/agapp
required additional post field "action" which can be "select" or "insert"
select will require "gameID" (right now there is a 4, 5, 1, 123)
and will return
[{"ID":"1","userID":"2","gmID":"3","gameID":"4","DiceRoll":"2d6","DiceResult":"6","Comment":"This is userID 2, gmID 3, gameID 4 rolling a 2d6 for a roll of 6"}]
insert will require all the above except "ID" as that is autoincremented
It will return a json dump of what you just inputted to include the new ID for it for troubleshooting or whatever.
[{"ID":"4","userID":"123","gmID":"123","gameID":"123","DiceRoll":"123d123","DiceResult":"123","Comment":"all numbers are 123"}]
So, with that, I think there is a basic start.
I tested it a few times with the chrome extension Postman and it seemed to work as advertised

Re: Ancient Gamer's Corner of Contribution
#28Not sick anymore. Still feeling a bit tired, but I will manage. So from this moment I... go to bed. But tomorrow is a grand new day, and I plan on spending that day coding, like a boss.
When I got sick I was stuck on that effing layout model Android uses. Gonna do a layout tutorial or two, then go back to the app with renewed strength.

#29Started a new project.
Chose the modern way of doing things in Android.
Life is good again.
