Mailing List Coming soon
#1All the cool kids are doing it!
And it makes sense. Some may not want to register and forget to come back. I think there is a huge opportunity to offer weekly or bi-weekly emails with various updates. Those that don't register but still have interest can throw in their email address and get site updates that way and move on without the commitment. And we grow the list and the interest.
It is happening, don't fight it...roll with it.
Ok..
HEY, I said roll with it. I already installed the damn software and it was a pain in the ass (http://sendy.co) so suck it.
Ok, once again, here we go. Ideas on what to put into it. For most of this I will create a page that autocreates most of the content with the format so it just has to be copied and pasted with some small updates. But what would be useful to newbies or occasional readers without boring them or pissing them off? How much of the content do we show them? Summaries?
New submissions
HoH or Goldens for the week
Fan Favorite spotlight type thing
oddity of the week (we have some whacked out submissions that are fun)
Freetext of the week
quest results and/or action
Forum games starting/looking for players
Site news/updates
ebook progress and/or offers
site of the week?
I am sort of a minimalist and love the simple format of the hacker newsletter which just has links and minimal fluff. So I can rip through it and click on stuff I want to see, ignore the rest and not be annoyed by a huge email full of text. Our strength is the website and we want them to come here, not just depend on the newsletter for everything...right? http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=faa8eb4ef3a111cef92c4f3d4&id=e132d35775 -
Re: Mailing List Coming soon
#2I'v over thinking this perhaps, but:
1. Should be nearly 100% automated - perhaps except for an editorial once-over including manual additions.
2. Submissions/etc/ should be tracked to prevent duplication.
3. New Goldens, HOHs, and new submissions with greater then 3 voted and score 4+
4. Picks from selected Favourite lists built as content sources for the newsletter.
5. Quest winners, 2nd place and 3rd place.
Regarding forum based content, this would be hard given my suggested requirement #1
Site of the Week
I think we should create a new submission type for Links - this would also for easy automation. Instead of normal sub content, it contains a link. Summary would be critical on this one.
Site News/Updates
Perhaps also adding Admin/Announcement type submissions. Same reason as Site of the Week. Leverage existing codebase/formatting and infrastructure.

#4Forum. If there was a specific announcement thread we can pull forum subs just as easy as main site content, but I catch your drift.
Yes, 90%+ automated it must be. Otherwise I will never do it. But if I make it a weekend task and maybe start it as a bi-weekly newsletter than I can keep up with it and not overload folks with small updates.
I likey!
