The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#1What the hell? Seriously.
:)
This is a more private forum. Only the Strolenati can get into this "The Book" area. Twenty something of the regulars that we can discuss freely among.
I need help. No illusions about the thought that I can do this on my own.
Not the, hey I got an idea or here is some links type help but some "NO SHIT, I GOT THIS SON" type of help.
We had a lot of talk with the RPT merge that is on hold. And that is an indefinite hold. Johnn is a great motivator with ideas he is willing to take action on. We have the vision. We know what we want and where we want to go. Let's do it our damn selves! If we can do this right and take it serious, I mean seriously, then we can own this ourselves without any other assistance. We have some brilliant writers, awesome coders and others with that and other great talents. If you want to help do this, we have the talent. We just have to get serious about it.
WTF? Ya know. We have been talking ebook for YEARS. Shouldn't take an outsider to kick us into gear with our own content!?
Do we want to publish some Citadel goodness and get it out there? FUCK YES!
Do we want to get some new blood in here and boost the participation? CHA!
Do we want to use the base that we have here and publish some shit that we can sell? FREELANCE SoB's!
So let's do this our damn selves!
We are done with ideas and talk, all the ideas we could ever need are in this forum and inside the google doc.
I need somebody to OWN this and corral us cats into a timeline.
Whoever is willing to run it, and we all agree, then it is their project and we are the peasant workers paying our taxes to our liege.
Get out the whip and keep us moving
1) Putting together the ebook. I like the idea here: http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,6655.0.html
2) Decide on the uniformity of it. Read this http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,5800.0.html
3) Do we need a descriptor system that translates to stats? See this: http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,5812.0.html
We did the talk, now lets walk it!
Use the ideas or not, let's get something in final form!
THIS IS THE PHILOSHOPY OF THE EBOOK! We are in the DO IT phase. Enough thinking, worrying and stalling. Let's put something together and make it so!
The Cult of Done Manifesto
There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
There is no editing stage.
Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it.
Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
Once you're done you can throw it away.
Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.
People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
Destruction is a variant of done.
If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
Done is the engine of more.
Once we have it in a state that it is ready to publish, then I can transport it to our kickass ebook design in the final phase.
I pledge that I will help along the way and drop everything I am doing when it is ready to put into final form.
I simply don't trust my moods to get me through the creation phase. I got as far as I could with the google doc. There is a semblance of a start there but I don't care if it is abandoned. Whatever we need to to do to get it done, let's do it.
I will also pledge monetary support if we decide we need art.
Do you know an artist or have somebody on deviant that you like their stuff. I will be willing to pay for quality art on a non-exclusive basis. I just want to be able to use it.
I am dead serious about doing this. But I need somebody to take ownership of it. I know me and I won't get it done. I will be an awesome assistant, but I can't drive this train.
ARE YOU IN? -

Ebook start link. Doesn't have to be used but I did a bit of formatting on some of the submissions. Just a thought though. I am open to most anything at this point. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#3I so would like to put up my hand for this, though going into the Christmas season, it would be very easy for real-life to detail it.
With that Caveat, I raise my hand. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#4excuses for me: Time, Motivation, Real Life, Stress, Too much Work, Blah Blah Blah Excuses Excuses!!
HOWEVER!!!!!
I was thinking today that if you all wanted; Fields of Flesh is pretty much a fully complete, in-depth and thorough Horror themed plotline which reaches in excess of thirty pages. It has a major plotline, with combat, mystery, a twist, npc interaction and rewards for playing smart. It's high fantasy and deals with angels and devils. It could probably be turned into an Ebook of its own right with some tweaks. I'd add a bestiary with plant and animal life as an appendix, and if we could get an artist to draw up a couple of gruesome fleshy trees and/or warped animal life, it would look pretty sweet.
You have my permission, if you want, to use it in any way you see fit as a stand alone Ebook to debut the Strolen's Citadel Ebook thingy. I'll look at adding some content to it on Wednesday if i find free time. Heck, if i can figure out how to make the ebook i might try and do it myself on Wednesday (minus the pictures.)

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#5Although I am going to be doing more in depth planning tonight - no author can do wrong by going over their subs frontwards and backwards to clear up typos, spelling, continuity or the like.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#6Not sure about visibility, going to keep using this thread for notes.
Typical size for magazines on DrivethruRPG and other locations tends to be about ~60 pages. Quotes for text-heavy magazines indicate 750-800 words/page being typical.
So, we need 48k words, roughly the size of a NaNAIMO novel. Piece of cake :) As of this writing, I about 20% to the target word/page count.
Tonight I'm taking stock of our current start list of subs, plus my own favourite list of horror subs. Feel free to chime in with any suggestions, along with why you are recommending its inclusion.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#7SE. That is an awesome idea for a standalone regardless. Do you think there is added ability for additional sub tie ins? Maybe keep this one all your subs and have it an SE edition. If we put together a product then it could be one of the first sets of ebooks available. If you have a product that is ready to go final, my offer to assist with art and making the final pdf are open to any and all ebook creations as long as the citadel deems them worthy!!
Sounds awesome Val!! I am getting excited we are moving forward again! -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#8Initial Selection Provisionally Complete
Up to 40 'sections' covering ~ 60k words and 307 pages of text.
I plan to condense this down significantly. Once I have that done, I'll be looking for help for proof-reading /copy editing the ‘surviving’ submissions.
If there are major ‘holes’ in what is offered after the current list is culled, I will be happy to entertain additional submissions. I am in fact open for new submission suggestions through the entire process.
1. Substantive Editing and Rewriting
Basically dealing with major flaws in the submission, often structural. The main issue that will be tackled is self-sufficiency of the submission. Direct linkage is good, but not when a submission is linked only by co-existing in a codex.
I would like to retain the original voice of the Author and so stylistic choices, including such things as run-on-sentences, will be left mostly untouched. Only Egregious examples need correction.
Submissions that require major work in this area will be deferred for future use.
2. Proofread/Copy-edit Stage
Spellcheck handles much, but not everything. This step will involve reading every sentence, looking out for wrong words (ie. spellcheck did something odd) and grammar.
Non-standard spellings for things will be corrected.
Ideally different people will perform 1 & 2 on a particular article.
3. Formatting
This step will reintroduce the formatting. Graphics and tables will be added/enhanced at this stage.

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#9I'm willing to remove my silly-hat, don my serious-hat, and devote time to this during the upcoming holiday season by volunteering for 1 and/or 2.
well said btw,I would like to retain the original voice of the Author and so stylistic choices, including such things as run-on-sentences, will be left mostly untouched. Only Egregious examples need correction.

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#10Also, this may be the best time to indicate if you _don't_ want submissions of yours included. PM me if privacy is preferred.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#11I don't want any Ouzquin Dremorix related material used at this stage - my (probably forever unrealized) dream is to one day make a novel in that world.
All of my other material is good to go. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#12If multiple hands are needed for editing and proof-reading, I am also game. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#13This is still moving apace - well at a pace. Perhaps not a breakneck one, but it is moving.

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#15I haven't read through the body yet but any reason that the text are justified the way they are? Very weird it seems to me but then I'm the one who always likes fully justified paragraphs that are available in Word but seldom with HTML.
Update: somehow this particular style of justification grew on me as I started reading SE's Corpsemaker so maybe not an issue after all.
There are some rough edges like forgotten capitalisation and extra commas. I'm at work today but wil do a thorough proof-reading over Friday and the weekends. Also, it might be a good idea to showcase AG, Manfred etc. and some of the others who are not main authors (I would add another page dedicated to them after the author page that contains the same short author descriptions about their style of writing/achievement at the Citadel with the additional note put that in this particular ebook, they are not the main authors but just contributed etc.) but contributed directly to the subs included (just scrolled to your 30 Walking Dead scroll and saw that you have them listed as contributors). -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#16K, working on the justification. It was supposed to be fully justified but got lost along the way.
I'm really only concerned with egregious errors - I kept the 'style' of the authors, which means some may use various quirks such as many commas (Oxford, anyone?), long sentences, etc.
I may be able to squeeze a couple more blurbs up front - putting pages in now is fairly complex but not impossible.
Thank you, btw.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#17The forgotten capitalisation and extras commas I spotted was for the Foreword and Authors sections. I haven't gone through the submissions themselves yet and as you said, I don't think we should heavily edit the original work except for obvious spelling errors. Anyway, I might just go through the whole thing at the end of this week. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#18Most of the extra commas in the Authors section appear to be for emphasis. Can you be more specific?
For example:
One cold, dark, February day, Murometz joined the Citadel thinking this website was something entirely different from what it was.
Those commas are pauses.
As for capitalization, could you also be specific? I didn't see any missing.

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#19Bringing over comments from the other thread to here.
fantomx11:
Also, since I've dabbled in layout, there are a few things that jumped out at me from a quick scroll through:
There is no baseline grid. That isn't a necessary thing, but can be one of the small differences that separates a polished layout from the others.
I would use justified text because it looks cleaner.
There are a few orphans, this is usually taken care of through editing the text or use of frames and images (less commonly, and definitely less polished looking is changing font size or spacing).
It seems like there should be a little more space between the footer and the page text.
There are a few places where the main text overlaps the sidebars/frames.
Some of the text in the frames has too short of a line height.
I love the original art, it seems to really support the mood of the book One thing (and since this is an epub, it's not that big of a deal) it is too low resolution for print. I would probably take some of the page graphics (like the solid gray piece next to the page number and the one that is under the chapter headings) and redraw them as vector based graphics so that they are resolution independent. Just out of curiosity, some of the art is attributed to Jack Holliday. Where did the rest of it come from?
Edit: Here is a link where I received much of the same critiques on a book I was working on at one time (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?728200-Need-comments-on-my-first-book). The book was a dieselpunk version of my Steam Mice setting that I have posted here.
2nd Edit: One other thing...the fonts you are using, you do have the license to use them commercially, right? If not, I would go to dafont.com, then in whatever category you choose, click on the "more options", select "100% free", and click "submit". This will limit the list of fonts to ones that can be used without purchasing a commercial license. There are several in the Gothic->Various section that have a similar feel to your header font (I'd post a link, but the url includes square brackets that mess with the BBCode).
There are many paragraphs scattered throughout where there is only one word on the last line. This is technically an orphan, but not something I would personally be too worried about given the font size compared to the line length.
More noticeable are the following:
page 15 ends with an orphan.
page 16 second column begins with a widow
page 24 has a weird one that I would call a widow even though it's in the middle of the column because there is a paragraph that is divided by a frame. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#20Not all of these have been addressed yet. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#21Val, here's the specifics for Foreword up to the Authors section:
Foreword
Typo: Foreword spelled as “forward”
1st column, 2nd line: “Strolen” not capitalised
1st column, 2nd paragraph, 6th line: extra full stop after the word “thousands”
1st column, 3rd paragraph: I think that it would improve clarity if you say “Jack Holiday… the pieces titled Oldu (here there’s a typo, Oldu spelled as Olde) Corpses…”. Also, it accidentally ends with a comma rather than a full stop.
Table of Contents
Foreword typo also here
10th submission (yours) actually starts on p. 27 rather than 28 as written here
The Authors
Forgotten capitalisation for your own name, Val.

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#22Except in titles, valadaar is intentionally lowercase. I'm special :)
Next version will cover all of these. Thanks!

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#23Corpsemaker
p.1, Blockquote/excerpt, 3rd paragraph:
Original- “It’s existence expunged holy thoughts of sanctuary and left me drifting, soul-dead ‘long a hellish ocean. Betwixt it’s human maw a fresh corpse lay, its weeping face a testament to its posthumous fate.”
Moonlake’s edit- “Its existence expunged holy thoughts of sanctuary and left me drifting, soul-dead ‘long a hellish ocean. Betwixt its human maw a fresh corpse lay, its weeping face a testament to its posthumous fate.”
p.1, last paragraph:
Original- “A combination of its mouth and its powerful hands are used to dig beneath the ground.”
Moonlake’s edit- “A combination of its mouth and its powerful hands is used to dig beneath the ground.”
Oldu Corpses
General comment: MJS had added another blockquote to the start of this sub onsite in an update that isn’t in the ebook. It brought the chilling element more whereas without it I was just carried along by the lore (but that’s just my personal opinion).
p.4: two-liner above pic: In the original sub by MJS, the first punctuation is a full stop but it’s a / on the e-book. Also seems to be extra spacing between Death and Cometh on the last sentence.
p.4-5: This might have been covered by Fan already but the blockquote in the middle of the page is edging too close to the columned text. It really looks like the blockquote is “crowding” the main text Then, there’s lines of text crowding each other in a vertical sense i.e. top lines covering part of the protruding parts of the line below- a feature of the font chosen?
p.4, 2nd column, 1st paragraph:
Original- “Their means of locomotion will varies - some may walk upright, others on all four as horses or dogs.”
Moonlake’s edit- “Their means of locomotion vary - some may walk upright, others on all fours or ride on horses or dogs.” Or “Their means of locomotion vary - some may walk upright, others on all fours like horses or dogs.” I’m not 100% sure what MJS meant exactly with the original sentence but to me, it is very odd in terms of clarity.
p.5, 1st column, 2nd paragraph, 10th line: “with it’s many towers” should be “with its many towers”
p.5, 1st column, 3rd paragraph, end of 3rd line: typo at the end, on should be “one”
p.5, 2nd column, 1st paragraph, third last line: “thousand” should be in plural form
p.5, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph, last 2 lines: cut out the words “to the city”
p.5, 2nd column, 3rd paragraph, third last line: typo, should be “he was hit by lightning that flash blinded the citizens”
p.6, 1st column, 1st line: typo, “through” typed as trough
p.6, 1st column, 3rd paragraph, third last line: forgotten a word, “they are injured”
p.6, 1st column, 3rd paragraph, last line: “a way” stuck together as “away”
p.6, 1st column, 4th paragraph, start of last sentence: I think the correct word would be “whether” rather than “if”
p.6, Secret/Twist, 4th line: I think it should be “except for the ring”
p.6, Hooks section: should be the PCs rather than PC’s.
Silenced Ones
p.7, 1st column, last paragraph:
Original- “Where once were ears, only rusted metal, bound to the bones in their heads through divine grace.” It seems to me that a verb needs to be in the middle phrase but can’t think of any verb besides “there’re” to fit with the prose.
p.7, 2nd column, 1st paragraph, 2nd line, it seems to me that “after that all” should be “after all of that”
p.7, 2nd column, last paragraph: wounds should be “received” not “taken”
p.8, 1st column, 3rd paragraph: lacking a verb in there- “make many, many attempts”
p.8, 1st column, 4th paragraph: body should be in plural form. Same problem occur with the very first sentence of the very last paragraph of this sub.
That's all for today, will have more tmr and over the weekends. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#24Again, great stuff. Agreed with 95% of these. If/Whether and Taken/Received I vote to keep as is.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#25okay, not too fussed abt one or two minor things like those. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#26The Awakened
p.9, paragraph under the blockquote, 3rd line: missing a word, “better off not knowing”
p.11, 2nd column, 2nd last paragraph, 2nd sentence: typo, “one instance” typed as “once instance”
p.12, 1st colum, 1st paragraph- there seems to be extra space equal to 2 whole lines
Note: Skipped the longer subs in between
The One-Eyed, Red-Eyed Crow
A lot of mistakes seems like a case of apostrophes being swallowed up by the site at one point during transfer from v2 to v3/v3 to v4? (I can’t remember which but I distinctly remember such a thing happening)
p.19, blockquote, left column, line 6: missing apostrophe in “devil’s “
p.21, 1st column, 3rd paragraph, 2nd last line: missing apostrophe in “swamp’s “
p.21, 1st column, 4th paragraph, end of 2nd line: missing apostrophe in “the Crow’s “
p.21, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph, start of 3rd line: missing apostrophe in “the victim’s “
p.21, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph, start of 3rd last line: typo, “caws” typed as craws
General comments for the e-book:
I see a few blank pages scattered throughout the e-book: there’s one in between the coloured and black&white cover and about 3 blank pages after the last sub.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#27Going back through the other associated threads of the ebook yesterday, it looks like a lot of content was trimmed down so can this e-book be renamed volume 1 (to accommodate future possibility of more e-books of the same them)? -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#28At some point there was a Volume 1 element on the title. When we're done I can get a volume added to the title. We might change the title for that matter.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#29fyi - will be largely away from a computer next week. Vay Cay time.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#30Ullhyr T’Lar-Yin
p. 22, opening blockquote: is there a way to remove the extra grey space from it so that it doesn’t look like it’s the first paragraph of the other blockquote and somehow aligned in the centre while the other one only occupies the left column?
p. 22, 2nd blockquote, 4th line: typo, “his stomach” rather than “him stomach”
p. 22, 2nd blockquote, 7th line: remove redundant dash
p. 22, 2nd blockquote, 8th line: any way to make the word “extracted” not stretch across 2 lines with only the last letter going over?
p. 22, 2nd blockquote, 4th last line: extra space before the word “sickening”
p.22, 3rd paragraph of A Dream Macabre, 3rd line: “its white…” rather than “it’s white”
p.23, 3rd last line of 1st column, “reduces inhibitions” to go with the tense of the parts following it
p.23, last paragraph of the Old Mine, last line: typo, bush typed as “brush”
p.24, end of first paragraph of Black Magic: seems to be missing a word on the 2nd last line
p.24: the 2 blockquotes are cutting across texts, one cutting across a paragraph and the other crowding into the last line of a paragraph. And can be the lone section header go to the next page?
p.24, Black magic, end of 2nd paragraph: asked what Scras meant by “a well hole in the floor” because not clear what it meant and Scras clarified that he was referring to a circular hole within a building that might be the opening to a well but wasn’t sure of the technical term to call it. I asked whether he wanted me to leave it or change it to “a circular hole in the floor” for better clarity but no response yet
p.25- Can the name of the tools be made in a smaller font size to the other big headings? Same thing for the individual items under the Section Door Traps starting on this page too.
p.25, blockquote, 1st word of 6th line mistyped:“were” should be “where”, and last word of 5th last line should be “saw” not “say”
p.25, the Unworthy section, extra space on the 2nd line. And forgotten capitalisation of the second sentence of the second paragraph
p.26, The Collector’s Treasury, 6th line: “were” should be “was”
p.26, 3rd last line of the Keeper section: “its use” rather than “it’s use”. Same deal with 3rd last line of the last section titled Combating the Keeper.
The 30 Walking Dead
p.27, last line of The Boramir: an apostrophe left out of “warrior’s wrath”
p.28- missing apostrophe from title of entry #7
p.28- typo for entry #10 The Roadkill, 3rd line- than spelled as “then”
p.28- entry #10 The Roadkill, 2nd last line- first word should be “moves” rather than “move”
p.28- start of entry #11 The Stretch: “This poor fool” rather than “Some his poor fool”
p.28- entry #12 The Ham: extra space after the opening bracket and forgot to add in a closing bracket, also a typo where “smell” typed as “spell”
p.28, entry #13 The Shrapnel, start of 3rd last line: “its flesh” rather than “it’s flesh”
p.29, entry #19, unnecessary dash inserted at the start
p.29, entry #20, 3rd line: “chests of his victims” rather than “chest’s…”
p.29, entry #21, 2nd line: “its body” rather than “it’s body”
p.29, entry #22, last line: “attend” somehow mistyped as two separate words
p.29, entry #23, 3rd line: “its pores” rather than “it’s pores”
p.30, entry #25, 2nd last line: “its charcoal…” rather than “it’s charcoal…”
p.30, entry #29, 4th line, “attention to details” instead of just detail. Also, seems to be extra space b/w the second last word and the last word.
And this leaves only the Cutsman to be proofed tmr and then I'm done! -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#31Heh - great proof that spellcheck ~= proofreading :)
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#32Awesome stuff. Thanks for jumping in Moonlake! -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#33Blank pages are used to keep it page count where it would 'fold' properly. Also, the backside of the titles are expected to be blank.
-
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#34Okay, if blank pages have their purposes, I'm not too fussed. I'm not sure where the backside of titles remark comes from. I also just got the idea that maybe we could insert more ad after your sub cos being a scroll, it referred back to some other Strolen subs not covered within the ebook itself (in this way making the ebook not self-contained if you take my meaning). So we could insert a more ad after your sub saying sth like "Curious about some of the things alluded here but not explicitly described in this ebook, join the Strolen's Citadel to open the Pandora box muwahaha"
@Strolen: I'm not jumping in so much as just clearing a 'debt' promised. I did volunteer myself for the proof-reading like 2 years ago or sth in one of the earlier ebook threads. Even my recent posting 'frenzy' originates from debt clearing *sigh* -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#35The Cutsman
p.14, 1st column, 2nd line: extra space after the word “dark” and before the comma
p.14, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph, 4th line: “Its face”instead of “it’s face”
p.14, 2nd column, 3rd paragraph, 2nd line: the words “who have” typed twice for the same sentence
p.15, 1st colum, 2nd paragraph. 2nd line: typo, “once” should “one”
p.15, 2nd colum, 3rd last paragraph, 5th line: extra comma before the words “describe the Masster-Abbot”
p.15, 2nd colum, 2nd last paragraph, 5th last line: I believe otherworld should be “otherworldly”
p.16, 2nd column, end of 2nd last line: “its armor” instead of “it’s armor”
p.17, 1st column, 3rd line: extra “it” before the words “the interstices”
p.17, 1st column, 3rd last paragraph, 3rd line: letter n missing from the word “within”
p.18, 1st column, 1st word of last paragraph: “animal” should be in plural form
p.18, 2nd column, 1st paragraph: there seems to be an extra space in both the 2nd last line and the very last line
Proof-reading all done, hurray!

#36should have another revision up tomorrow night. I am guilty of being blind to it's and its. -
Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#37Okay, lied before, and don't have a new one available yet. Turned on the baseline grid, and its necessitating a lot of adjustment. Its very much for the better though. -

Re: The backyard of [horror] ebook fury....
#40OK.
I am throwing down the Gauntlet. I have a metric shit ton of things going on but I will sacrifice my soul to make this work.
THIS HORROR EBOOK WILL BE RELEASED ON OCTOBER 31, 2015.
No if ands or buttockeseseses about it.
Val.
What do you need me to do?
Direct me with what you still need.
I don't care if it is still screwed up in a couple places. IT WILL BE RELEASED. Even if I have to hack your home box and steal the raw file.
