  1. [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

    #1
We now have a few people working on readpostplay.com as our test site. Some didn't want to work on a live site. Something about breaking or deleting data or some such nonsense.  :ahh:
That will be our test bed. We will play and fix and once it is working, only then will it make its way to strolen.com.

I guess that makes sense in some twisted way.

    Always something going on. :)

The newest beauty of this is people that actually know how to code will be reviewing some of the site so it might actually work per some established methods vs. my hacking.

The big thing with this update is that it should play nicer with phones and tablets. I finally broke down and got a tablet but I mostly use it for email and ebooks but at least now I can check it.

Will use this to track the path to the upgrades and such and maybe keep us developers out of each other's sandbox. There will be plenty of cat poop to go around.

    [$] = large update
    [-] = small update
    [?] = bug fix

    [$] Upgrade to Bootstrap 3.0
    [$] Regions
    [$] "I Am" pages revamp
[$] Create a weekly newsletter type thing with list of submissions that have been inputted. Other things?
[$] Develop another flag on submission to 1) Ask for a revote 2) ask for a Critical Critique 3) other ideas
[$] Better establish automatic award/badges system
[$] contract out for some badges
[$] Remove two page submission path, allow choice of primary category on initial submission and ajax update subcategories

[-] Ability to see all your permissions in your profile - a simple list vs trying to translate the table chart
[-] Better 404 type error pages. For instance, if somebody changes a post to private and there is a link to it, it will tell you that. And for missing or whatever. Not just the grue comment.
[-] Linking to unwritten submissions will prompt you to write a submission with that name. So you can add a link to something you intend to write but haven't yet.

    Sounds incredible!

Please Quintuple-backup the subs :D

    Let the feature creep begin.

I have a list on paper that I will move over to here today.

OK. Brace yourselves for this first toy.

Think of this as a landing page. I am looking at redoing the navigation though. Limit the choices and instead make some control panel type pages to get you to the other content that is currently linked. There is so much that most users don't understand, if we simplify the main menu and then have a page that better describes what the hell is going on, maybe people can use the site better.

Yes, I will want users to be able to choose what their landing page is once (if) we do this for real. So if you want to default to the submission listing page you will be instantly redirected there. (But just wait till you see the new version I have in store for that!!) Anyway...

If you don't like it, leave and look at it again later. :)

This is a ROUGH draft. I spent only enough time on it to get something together that looks like something.

(No, most links don't work. It is just for playing around to see if this is feasible. Yes, I like it with some more work. Easy to show off quests properly too with another section.)

    That is awesome!!

It looks pretty cool, certainly keeping with the times. But I hope all that fancy animated stuff won't show up once you've logged in, seems like a waste of compu resources.
  8. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

    Hence, "Choice of landing page".

    A few observations:
How are we doing page editing? We have a number of static pages, do we just modify them in the DB directly atm?
The layout seems a smidge long. Perhaps if we used something like jQueryUI's tab interface, we could shorten up the sections into individual bits. Or a slideshow, that would work too. Just something to reduce the page length, and organize the sections into easily-consumable chunks.

As a complete aside, I've been mulling over the idea of a mobile app of some sort for the Citadel. Thoughts? If we're doing major redesign, no reason we can't add an app to the mix. Mobile submission browsing/saving, etc. Support for minichat and AJAX Chat might be nice too, though I'm thinking more the former than the latter.

I like the new setup... however I would like to say this. I realize the need to keep up with the times and continue to revamp the site but instead of keep changing the way the site looks... can we just make the site more solid and stop breaking it?
  10. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

    #10
Mourn: Part of the new version is a setup where we have a test site, so that we can do changes without breaking the main site. Strolen pretty well learned his lesson after The Event.
  11. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

    #11
    In a word Mourn: no.

There is too much that needs to be fixed. The current site is ok, but it is not new user friendly and it could use a lot more help showing off the features so folks can understand what they can actually do here.

I am game for everything to include an app. That would be pretty awesome. Would an app be better than a better responsive form?

The database thought might be a good one. It might be time to make parts editable like the author homepage, just click and update it for admins or something. For now, will continue to work on this for a little bit. I will continue to make it longer and longer to create bits and pieces we can reuse. Once we have some stuff we like, overall, we can start separating it. For now, it is my playground for formatting and style. The menu still needs some work too and not sure if I am satisfied with those choices. When it goes phone mobile size the drop down is way too long. Have to get that under control.

But I like it overall. Decent place to start. I think I will play with the browsing page today. Have a fun idea for that which might turn out pretty cool and want thoughts on that as it may change the the header a bit.

Ok, another demo that is super super rough. But not going to spend a lot of time on it if the general idea is not liked.

This is browsing a particular author. To change the author, just replace "Strolen" with your username or anybody else's. Warning, if you use Scras's then it is a beast. There are no filters on it, it sucks every single post in. Future we can ajax it or pagination, whatever.

You can see where it is going.

I'm not sure I like the specific layout of the page overall, but that listing of subs? Hells yes. I will fire you off in a cannon to keep you going in that direction.
  16. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

It was only set up to test the sub listing. Everything else was gravy just to get a feel.

Glad you like it because I will need your skills to ajaxify the list and the content as well as infinite scroll it somehow.  :)

Wondering if the isotope plugin would be better since it will align the subs like pinterest. Using mixitup right now and that only sorts, doesn't do the alignment.

I like pinterest and I use it, so making the Citadel a bit more Pinterestish is good in my book

    http://strolen.com/freetext

Finally have a good solution for the freetext mayhem.

If you have more sort ideas, let me know. And they are a little finnicky as they do act on the current content sort. So if it gets weird, click on All and Reset and you should be back to normal.

I don't know enough javascript with this library to show the selected choices...yet.
  19. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

I think you need to start with something in the whitespace on the http://readpostplay.com/browse_author5 page.  Either their most recent submissions, or their best submissions.
  20. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

I was thinking it could be their homepage they build or something more profiley "meet the author" type thing.

That can be debated as we move forward on that, easy enough to change and play with.

Author name should allow for a custom image in addition or in its place.
    Levelled option to do this.
    Graphic subject to Strolenatii approval.

    http://readpostplay.com/core5

Another iteration. A lot cleaner and smaller. Still some work to do with the responsiveness but it is far enough that I am going to work on the actual links and site code that supports it and get it working 100%.

Again, this is a new landing page for newbies. Once in place, it will be one quick click and you will go to the current homepage. But there are a lot of support pages that have to be finished before it goes live. I will figure out something for you old timers but I am looking to entice some registrations. So, with that in mind, any suggestions on wording and such is very welcome.

I'm liking it. I bet there's a bit more we could rearrange in there to make it perfect, but the content and style is great!
  25. Re: [readpostplay.com] The coming of 5.0

I can definately agree with the layout and add that it looks like it'll work ALOT better on tablets/phone than the current main page does.

A few weeks ago I decided to skip Version 5 and go straight to version 6. Not only is 6 a better number because you can flip it upside down and instantly add 3, but it is also the most feared number when you have 3 of them together.

Anyway, I may be somewhat silent around for a couple more weeks as all my free time goes towards this next version. Once May hits, I should be able to get away with less than 12 hours a day at work for a little, it will be like I quit a second job....normal duty hours, a dream.

And if anybody does find it, they must keep it a secret. If I find out you know that I know that you found the place I know you know and know where it is...I will move it.

I am gunning for StrolenCon to do the Lockmor V6.0 reveal and I want my secret to stay hidden.

Strolen, not sure how far you have gone with v6 and whether v6 follows the same updates as you mentioned at the start of this thread. But I thought if you are really implementing an aura thing to indicate people's tendencies as a commenter, then I think an idea by Val in reponse to an old thread in the forums (http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,5512.0.html) might be useful too. The basic idea is to give auras to particular submissions to distinguish both the level and the stringentness of comments wanted by the author on a particular sub. I'm not sure that I necessarily agree with Val's suggestion to rejig sub types but I like the underlying idea of providing authors to signal what types of comments they want on a particular sub and whether they want comments and votes at all on a sub.

Below is the actual quote from Val:

Hmm, there seems to be 3 populations of submitters - which varies as the same person could be at different modes at different times, or even concurrently.

    1. Idea Sharer
Just wants to put a cool idea out there, not so concerned about presentation apart from avoiding total crap.

    2. Golden Standard
Wants to put out ideas and writing, as Moonhunter puts it, good enough to be in a published fantasy novel (or other publication) and wants to be held to the standard.

    3. Wants to put out quality ideas and writing, but also does not want to participate in the messy business of review, etc.

So how to accommodate all these varied interests? All are valid under the Strolen Tent.

    1. Closed Submissions

A Closed submission is not soliciting advice but is offered up as-is to the audience.  Closed submissions still receive feedback through comments, and have the 'I used this' and HOH options open to them, as well as promotion to Golden.  Voting would not be open on these.  As a result, admins would be responsible for dealing with submissions of dubious value or very poor quality.  There are no level restrictions on using this type of submission.

    2. Open Submissions

Strolen's Default - Its offered up for use, but feedback is actively solicited.  Voting is accepted and once the author feels it is ready, they can  moving it to Closed if desired -  there is no requirement for this and no xp awarded for the transition. Open subs get "I used This", HOH and Golden options as well.

    3. Workshop Submissions

This are the current in-work, but as prominent as the other three or in a section Strolen's Workshop. Here submissions are open for commentary, but not voting. They still can be marked as "I used this' and HOH'd for bumpage, and can be moved to either Closed or Open submissions. # inwork submission level limitation should be dropped.

Of the three, the closed submission is the new one, and would probably fill the bill for what RG was looking for. It could also be used by new submitters who just want to share an idea without the drama of voting.

So really, this is simply a rework of the suggestion of disabling voting on a sub-by-sub basis.  However, by being a separate submission type, perhaps in its own list/area, the assumption on those is that critique is not solicited and this may work better.

    http://strolen.com/commentrules/

Based off a Facebook post by Scras. A rough draft I threw together because I wanted to play with parallax for a second, but the breakdown I was thinking.

It wouldn't be a post type, necessarily, but an expected/requested level of comments that would be show somewhere by the comment box. I really, really, really, really, really want to get away from the unrequested critical critiques. Most of us just don't give a crap if spelling and punctuation...if it is a problem or if there are some odd sentences. What about the *idea*.  (I didn't read the other post to refresh my memory so I may have missed something). The second level is perfectly acceptable too if there are some glaring deficiencies. I am wanting and gunning for creative responses....not critical. Things that will improve instead of just point out flaws.

The default would be the "Respect the Idea" type comment. Just comment on the idea. What am I am missing. If I want a copy editor review, I can flag it as such. But otherwise, drop the hyper critical comments.

Anyway, YES to what you are saying!

And I am moving along fairly well in my secret lab in the caverns of the Citadel. When it is ready (probably a demo of what I have at StrolenCon) it will be released for comment and critique!

Oh, no disabling of voting though. If you submit it to the world, you get the votes you get. But Votes are getting a revamp as well so hopefully the expectations for each vote will be MUCH clearer.

All good stuff. Keep the ideas flowing. I love hearing them all!!

Right, glad to know that voting stays intact. I know a lot of people don't like it but I always maintain that it is useful as it is pending mental adjustment by people aka cast aside your egos.

Made some huge strides this weekend.

I may be a lot more quiet than I have in the past, but you can feel the vibrations through the citadel as a new city is formed.

Good good, definitely looking forward to v6. btw, I think I mentioned it a few odd times already but can we get a little more visibility for the Wikis than currently is? Now we cannot even search for Wikis, have to know the title/sub id of particular wikis or save it in fav folder. Eg. Val has put out a couple of good utility Wikis and if I don't tag them in my fav folder, I have to trek thru Val's author profile to find them.

Kinda bringing this up from the ashes. Not sure my priorities are the same but this forum is ripe with great ideas.
